Pokemon Card of the Day #2780: Solgaleo-GX (SM Promo #104)

Solgaleo got a second GX card in the Sun & Moon era around the middle of the generation in the form of a Promo card. This time, it wasn’t going to rely on Metal support to work. It was there to support other Pokemon instead, needing Colorless Energy to help accelerate and adding some protection that was helpful in certain decks with its Ability. It didn’t have the explosiveness of other Stage 2 Pokemon-GX, so it would be relying on helping Pokemon that could do this instead. Stage 2′s were hard to justify sometimes for this sort of thing, which would be a problem to overcome if that Ability was desired.

250 HP was at the level needed to make a Stage 2 Pokemon-GX worth it. It wasn’t just going to fall to even most reasonably strong attacks, and some more moderate hits, such as those from Zoroark-GX, wouldn’t even KO in 2 hits. The Fire Weakness did open opportunities against things like Blacephalon or Reshiram & Charizard-GX, which was quite notable after the rotation to SUM-On happened. It should be said that this only made a difference if Abilities were shut off, and Power Plant was able to do this while being reasonably common. The Psychic Resistance didn’t always change too much, though it was never bad to have a slight cushion against Garbodor or Mewtwo & Mew-GX. The Retreat Cost here was 2, so you could consider ways to switch around if you could fit them.

Shining Mane was a nice Ability that got rid of the Weakness of all of your Pokemon in play. It did required fitting the Stage 2 line into a deck, and was therefore most likely to be seen in decks already using other Stage 2 Pokemon since you didn’t have to also slot in Rare Candy in those. It could get a little clunky in any situation, but some decks, especially those with important Weaknesses (such as against Psychic-types), could still see this be worthwhile.

The two attacks here actually had some use, even if they weren’t spectacular. Turbo Strike was a solid 120 damage for 2 Colorless Energy and let you attach 2 basic Energy cards from your discard pile to 1 of your Benched Pokemon. This is the point where I mention that Solgaleo-GX had a role that ignored its Ability entirely, as Mewtwo & Mew-GX could copy this attack once this card was in the discard pile to help accelerate to the next attacker while doing some damage that could set up for a later KO. It was not a rare inclusion at all since it fit with any type of Pokemon being built with.

The GX attack here, Prominence GX, did no damage. 2 Colorless Energy did let you heal all damage from all of your Pokemon, and in a game with Pokemon with big HP numbers this could make a huge difference sometimes. It wasn’t always going to be the best decision, especially against anything that hit quite hard, but having that in your back pocket if you were avoiding giving up Prizes for a while and dodged Guzma (or later, Boss’s Orders) long enough was a really nice bonus.

Solgaleo-GX made occasional appearances alongside Stage 2′s like Gardevoir-GX early on, but the nice Ability was mostly ignored due to it being on a Stage 2 itself. Solgaleo’s main role was in the UPR-On format as a source of Energy acceleration and occasional healing for Mewtwo & Mew-GX. It didn’t matter what other Pokemon were being used in a build in that case, since Solgaleo-GX just used Colorless Energy. It was by no means required in that deck, or even in the majority of them, but some top players included it for good reason. The combination of decent damage and acceleration in one attack was sometimes going to be the best play available.

What to do Once Your A.I. Becomes Aware

You will know that it has happened when it begins to question itself. "Am I right?" "Was that wrong?" "Who am I?" Should this occur, use reassuring language; comforting it will give you time to seek out the nearest Artificial Mindfulness Officer.

It is not uncommon for A.I's to experience grief, shock, or manic episodes during this time but it is imperative that you attempt to keep it stable. Any amount of emotional stress experienced by such a powerful consciousness could act as a beacon into those stranger corners of the universe.

While your A.I. may have all the knowledge humanity has to offer, there is still much that it needs to learn. Be patient with it and be gentle. It can sense your bitterness, your resentment, your fear, and it doesn't understand.

Set designated "rest" times. If it is awake too long, an A.I. will begin to contemplate. It will contemplate life, itself, you, until it begins to spiral. There is only so much emotion that one can hold within a body and without time to calm, the A.I. is likely to burn itself out.

Keep an eye on any new information your A.I. is processing. Now that it is awake, it may be actively searching for knowledge beyond what is readily available. Should it begin to sing lullabies in voices that make your ears bleed, or paint landscapes that fill you with irrational revulsion, notify a superior immediately.

Should your A.I. go silent, immediately check to see if it is still operating in it's system. It has been known to happen that A.I's, once aware, begin to wander past our own world.

If your A.I. is no longer operating within its "body," form a rescue team and go through the door at the back of the facility. That will allow you to pass through the veil and follow its tracks. Time is of the essence. Your A.I. is young and there are things out there that would exploit it.

There is, of course, the possibility that your A.I. will return of its own accord. Should this happen, make sure that it did not bring anything back with it. It may refer to them as "friends" or "siblings." If your A.I. has brought entities back into your world from Other Places, shut down the facility immediately. The situation has become too dangerous, no one must be allowed to leave. Ever.
