Helena has been treated poorly, for sure, but I doubt she’s ever been told ‘no’ in any way that mattered. That’s why Helly is so fucking stubborn to the point of suicide. Dylan George is a kind man who just wants to be good enough. Dylan G rides every win until he hits the next because his brain is so starved for positive reinforcement. He just wants an attaboy but he’ll never love you any less if you don’t give him one. Irving Bailiff is a loyal man, devoted to his life as a soldier. Until Irving B felt the pull of something stronger, something worth throwing your whole self into. And yet!!! When his unknown lover asks him to please, please, disappear and never come back so I don’t have to be rid of you in a far worse way? He does it. He fucking does it. Because he is nothing if not loyal. He barely knows this man from Adam but he knows what he fucking feels. And then there’s the Marks. Hilarious that his name sounds like a plural when he and his other self would probably be most disgusted by each other (yes, even Helly and Helena, because while they have reason to loathe one another, well, real recognizes real). Mark Scout crumbled when he lost his wife. He retreated. He became a shell of a man. He broke himself into so many little pieces he had to hand one of them over to a cult like mega corporation just to know where to start reassembling himself. And now Mark S exists. But he also feels an instinct to retreat. An instinct he will never be able to follow because he himself is a holofract of a larger, more complete being. And yet. Both want what the other has so badly that they’ve walked right through one another and wound up on the other side. “You are a version of me with so much lived experience. You are the pinnacle of life!” “You have a blank slate, a mind yet to be wooed and wounded by the world. You are the pinnacle of life!” And while Helly and Helena understand tenacity, while Dylan and Dylan understand devotion, while Irving and Irving both understand sacrifice, Mark and Mark will never be able to admit that they share anything in common, because to do so is to admit to the uncanny valley effect in the mirror. They must maintain that barrier in order to function. Everything belongs in neat little boxes. Compartments, if you will. Don’t let that remind you of the titanic. Or ice cube trays. Or waffles.

harmony keeping a close eye on mark feels like it takes on such a different meaning now. imagine your work getting stolen from you but you're still devoting your whole life to the process. you're still invested in the whole entire thing! you are willing to stalk your employee to understand just how far the severance barrier can go you are open to playing with your employee neighbor and his dead wife wellness counselor like dolls in your science experiment because you can't control how your invention is used but you can control your understanding of what it can do. no fucking wonder she said the severed floor was hers to run! girl!!!
