New Fic: A Minor Conflict of Interest

A new fun, quick fic for @aroeddiediaz! Thank you for requesting it and generally being awesome! ❤️❤️❤️

Summary:

Years in the future, Buck and Eddie are both new into their respective careers as fire captains. When a big emergency sees Buck take charge as incident commander, he and Eddie aren't so happy to be working together.

Snippet:

Buck acts completely normally when the 136 arrives on the scene. He tries to act like he hardly notices at all. 

“Captain Diaz,” he greets Eddie with a curt, professional nod. 

Nailed it.

“Captain Buckley,” Eddie replies, in the same manner. “Where do you need us?”

“We’ve got a lot of people on hoses,” Buck explains. “More people on the firebreak will help slow the spread. We’re just trying to contain it until air support arrives.”

“You got it,” Eddie says, then turns without any further discussion to instruct his team. 

Good. That’s probably good.

The less Buck and Eddie speak outside what is strictly necessary for this call, the better. 

“Do you, like, hate that guy or something?” Asks the new probie on Buck’s team.

buck being so smart yet stupid as hell is so important to me. he knows so much stuff. he can’t remember a damn thing. he’s really good with people. he’s never had a successful social interaction in his life. he sucks at being a boyfriend. he’s the biggest wifeguy on earth. he’s the most thoughtful person who has ever lived. he’s unbelievably selfish. he’s desperate and needy. he’s pathologically self sufficient. his zest for life is contagious. he doesn’t care if he lives or dies. he’s involved with everything. he’s consistently out of the loop. he’s debilitated by love. he’s fueled by anger. he’s your favorite guy. he’s on your shit list. he’s bisexual. he’s an ally. he’s dumb as rocks and i like him so much

I haven't abandoned this story. I just put it on the back burner for now. The story is just on a small vacation. It is currently out of office. It can't come to the phone right now. It just fell under my bed to sleep with the monsters. It never left my head. It is everywhere - except on paper.

the worst thing about writing or any kind of craft is having an idea you're really excited to make a reality but then you sit down and realize how much work it's going to take to get to that point and suddenly you feel like those two little gay guys in the mountain in the lord of the rings

man, when I'm writing I'm like giggling and dancing about and thinking this is the greatest shit ever. and then when I'm reading it over and editing it's like......someone should drown me in a lake for this. this is so embarrassing. I can't believe I wrote 'The shadows were dispersing' instead of 'The shadows dispersed', someone should hunt me down and kill me for this.

buddie proposal where eddie proposes by accident and then. takes it back. because it's not how he Meant to do it. but buck was just being so. Buck. god. and he couldn't. he couldn't keep it in. like, it happens during the most mundane moment. like, it's early morning. and eddie's huffy because buck's not there (he went out for a run) and also there's none of his favourite cereal left. and then buck gets back from his run, and he's like, i stopped off at the store. you were running low on. idk whatever the fuck eddie's favourite cereal is. and eddie just, feels warm all over. god. he loves him. so much. and he says, marry me. and buck freezes. hand halfway to a bowl. says, what? and eddie feels like he might explode. says, marry me. and buck's like, because i bought you cereal? and eddie's like, no. well, yeah. but. fuck. wait, no. i take it back. and buck abandons the bowl completely now like, you take it back? you—no. what? you can't take it back. what do you mean you take it back? and his eyes are big and wide and confused and. hurt. maybe. and eddie's like, no. i don't—fuck. i'm messing it all up. i had a plan. and buck's expression softens. and he stares. like a puppy. says, you had a plan? to— and eddie breathes out, a long sigh. yeah, buck. to propose. i had a plan. then you. you bought me cereal. and buck frowns like, it's just cereal. and eddie laughs, a little choked. says, it's not, it's. no one's ever loved me the way you love me. and the way i love you is. god, buck. sometimes it feels like my chest is. like it’s not even big enough to hold it. and buck swallows, lump in his throat, cereal abandoned. says, eddie, soft and breathless. and eddie says, so i take it back. but only because i couldn't hold it. i have a Plan. and buck's like, tears in his eyes, okay. but for the record, it's a yes. now and. whenever. however. and eddie's like, i know. reaches, grabs buck's hand and pulls, tips their foreheads together, and buck meets him halfway in a kiss, slow, lingering. pulls away and says, so, cereal? and eddie laughs, says, yeah.
