I always have the fear of being annoying for sniffling in class. Then I would just sweat uncontrollably and think that I am interrupting the class. It only gets worse when it’s reading time.

Feylin: An Essay on Sexism In and Surrounding the SJM Fandom

I’ve been seeing some disturbing commentary going on regarding the announcement of SJM’s new adult fantasy series, Crescent City. Specifically, I’ve seen a lot of people - antis and fans alike - saying they wonder if SJM can actually write a new character or if she’s just going to transplant Feylin (yes, I wrote Feylin) into this third series. I say Feylin because the somewhat disturbing commentary I’ve been seeing recently is that Feyre and Aelin are basically the same character. This disturbs me because in a fandom that’s supposed to be pretty feminist (and coming from a lot of antis who claim their feminism is why they hate the fandom), that statement is in itself sexist.

Aelin and Feyre are not the same person.

They have different backgrounds.

Feyre comes from extreme poverty, a neglectful father, abusive or neglectful sisters, no familial support, illiterate, merchant-class before falling into poverty. No one had ever tried to actively harm/torture her until the events Under the Mountain (except for that quick brush with the monsters in the woods and at Calumnai).

Aelin comes from extreme wealth, a pair of loving parents, no siblings, a wonderful cousin who always had her back, loved books and was highly educated, literal royalty, descended from an actual god. Was abused emotionally and physically from the time she was 8 until she was 17, then essentially kidnapped and tortured for a year, driving her to the point of attempted suicide, BEFORE the book even STARTS. A near-victim of targeted racial genocide by fantasy/demon-Hitler.

Feyre and Aelin have different hobbies.

Aelin loves to read, loves to play music, loves dancing, loves fancy-schmancy feminine things, and loves fighting and weapons. She has a lot of things she loves.

Feyre loves painting and going to parties with friends and shopping sometimes and admiring artistic things, but her big passion is painting. She has one HUGE passion.

Feyre and Aelin have different fighting skills.

Aelin can fight in a variety of hand-to-hand styles, and with different kinds of swords, and with knives. She tends not to fight magically, and when she does, she’s not so much fighting as just unreservedly unleashing her power on shit.

Feyre can shoot a bow and knows the Illyrian hand-to-hand style, sort of. She can also fight magically.

They have different goals and emotional journeys.

Feyre’s goal in ACOTAR was to first protect and care for her family, then to protect the man she loved. Then in ACOMAF, her goals became first being “enough” for Tamlin and then recovering herself and her mental health, and helping protect her new home. In ACOWAR, her goals were to protect Prythian, ALL of Prythian, and the human world.

Aelin’s goal, from Throne of Glass until the end of Heir of Fire, is to protect herself and, occasionally, the people she loves if it comes up (which it usually didn’t). In Queen of Shadows, her goal became saving her cousin and reclaiming her birthright, her throne, and getting her kingdom back, and that’s where she’s at right now. She’s kind of worried about Erawan, but for Terrasen’s sake, not any other kingdom.

They have different love interests.

Rowan is fae, yes, but he’s a disenfranchised low-tier warrior prince from an illustrious family, no sexual trauma, blond, who basically worked as a member of a queen’s private brute squad after his wife’s death. Fights with bow & arrow as well as swords and knives, uses wind and ice magic, can shapeshift into a bird because of hereditary shapeshifting magic. Tattooed his life story about losing his first wife and child on his body, doesn’t really have anyone he loves without reserve, loves Aelin’s family even when they screw up.

Rhysand is a king, half-fae and half-something else, son of a murderer and a common-born woman, uses shadows and mind magic, can shapeshift into a giant black monster which can only also be done by his magical opposite, history of sexual trauma, never been in love before, has a strong family life and best friends he loves without question, never had a child before, daddy issues, lost his family when his best friend and bestie’s fam murdered them, black hair, wings, fights with talons and magic more than weapons. Hates or barely tolerates Feyre’s family and friends.

Aelin and Feyre even have different personalities.

Aelin doesn’t accept disrespect as her due from people she cares about. She has a strong belief in her own self-worth, beauty, and skills both artistically and with weapons. She doesn’t tolerate bullshit or let people wallow in their own pain.

Feyre’s self-esteem is shit from book one. She doesn’t consider herself to be good looking, she doesn’t have much of an ego, and she lets people put her off if something is wrong and they don’t want to talk about it. When she gets criticized, she gets defensive instead of going on the offensive as Aelin does.

These woman are very different. They’re not even the same age (TOG, Aelin is 18, and now she’s 19; Feyre went from 19 to 21). The only things they have in common are:

Both have pointy ears

Both overcame hardships

Both are female

Both can fight (in different ways)

Both have magic (of different kinds and strengths and used for different purposes)

Both are married to magical creatures

These women are not the same. Unless, of course, all complex and at least mostly fully fleshed female characters are the same regardless of background, interests, life goals, and personality, in which case we only need one of them, I guess, and no more anymore again.

Except I know that’s not true. And the idea that these two very different women are essentially the same character with different hair is ridiculous and sexist. There are reasons to dislike these characters, but THAT isn’t one of them.

Deanna is able to convert Aelin’s magic to Moon-Fire, a fire that is so cold that it burns. It could burn throught anti-magic properties. Deanna had burned through the iron encasing on Aelin’s hand.

And everyone knows that Aelin can use wyrdmarks.

But think about it. If Aelin could somehow get control of Deanna’s magic and use Moon-Fire, she could get out of the iron coffin. Or use the wyrdmarks since wyrdmarks work on iron too. Aelin can get out in these two ways. She will get out, guys. One way or another.

Ahhh finally someone that can explain and express their opinion that I share with.

I'M ABOUT TO GO ON A SUPER LONG RANT ABOUT THESE ANTI-SARAH ASSHOLES AND I'D LIKE YOU TO READ

There are so many toxic people who are anti-SJM or anti-so-and-so-character in this fandom. It’s definitely good to take a critical look at something you love to see if it’s unhealthy or problematic. Sarah isn’t perfect. She writes a lot of white characters, a lot of her characters are hetero; but she’s genuinely trying to get better. When we started complaining about all the white characters she wrote the Illyrians, she wrote the Summer Court. A lot of this fandom views Manon as East Asian. Could there be more? Definitely. When we pointed out that there were a lot of hetero relationships she wrote Morrigan, a lesbian, she wrote Aedion as bi, I personally think Manon is also bi. She also wrote a gay couple in Heir of Fire. She slips these in so subtly and doesn’t make a big deal out of it, so people forget. The only complaint brought up by y'all that is complete bullshit is that she’s romanticizing abusive relationships. If y'all want to know why I think I have the right to call bullshit on that you can talk to me personally. She’s one of the very few authors that truly listens to her audience and tries to improve herself. She’s worked so hard since she first wrote Throne of Glass. She’s always writing new material for us, traveling to meet us, and executing all of the technicalities to give us new material! And y'all have the gall to call her lazy, when her dad has just had a heart attack and she has her own health issues?!? SARAH ISN’T HERE TO SERVE US. SHE’S A FUCKING HUMAN WITH HER OWN LIFE. It’s healthy to take a critical look at a fandom or something you love. But picking apart literally everything she does is fucking awful and extremely unhealthy. Trying to stamp out the joy that other people get from Sarah’s work is vile. I cried when I read how well Sarah had written Aelin’s crippling depression, because she had put what I was going through into words so well and I felt a so much less alone. There are so many people who connect with Sarah’s writing and being an asshole and telling people that it’s problematic when it’s really not is atrocious. No one is going to be perfect and I truly feel sorry for the people who feel like they have to trumpet their hate out to the world. Sarah isn’t perfect but neither are you, and holding her to an impossible standard is unhealthy for you and for her. I don’t like Cassandra Clare and I think she’s problematic, but do I shit on everyone else’s love for her books? No, because I’m not an asshole. I really can’t summon up any emotion for these people except for disgust.
