Thoughts on Magic Knight Entrance Exams
I have been thinking on how the Captains really choose their recruits during the Magic Knight Entrance Exams, so instead of studying, I gathered those thoughts here. It also has some thoughts about the Entrance Exam itself in the beginning 😁
(Ch = chapter, Ep = episode)
Entrance exams.
Based on the manga, every year, in March, those that are 15-year old get their grimoires in the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony (Ch:1).
In the manga, the Magic Knights Entrance Exam is after six months from there (Ch:2). This would put it to September. It's unknown whether they recruit every year or if the recruitment is distributed differently, since instead of serving a certain amount of years, it seems to be more of a job than military service. Since lot of the characters seem to have joined Magic Knights as 15-year-olds, it seems to suggest that it is a yearly occurance. (E.g. the wiki says Julius joined Grey Deers' immediately as a 15 year old, meaning he has served ~27 years.)
We are only shown that there are possibly over 165 participants, and considering that the captains handpick those they want, there can't be an immense sum. They neither seem to recruit too many at a time - Black Bulls recruited 1 (since Noelle didn't participate in the actual exam), seemingly Golden Dawn also only took Yuno and as far as we know, Sekke could have been the only Green Mantis recruit. The squad sizes should probably also have an effect (how many more the squad needs to maintain their size), but it's hard to make guesses based on that. It seems like they recruit very few people every year, though. According to the anime (Ep:5), the first participant even chosen is only number 71, meaning 70 first participants didn't become knights.
Captains.
As said before, the Captains make the choices in the entrance exams. The interesting thing is that they don't seem to have their vice-captains to help with the part, but rather...just someone from the squad (Ch:2). While Yami has Finral & Gordon, it looks like William has Siren Tium by his side and Fuegoleon has Leopold. The anime seems to show Nebra by Nozel's side (Ep:4).
Maybe the vice-captains take care of the missions while the captains spend their day choosing recruits, so they pick someone whose judgement they trust?
So how do the captains choose who they want?
As shown by everyone wanting Yuno, they all want someone powerful (possibly due to the four-leaf-grimoire), someone somewhat ambitious - Yuno's calm demeanor could also have an effect. All were willing to look past him being a peasant.
Yami, William and Charlotte are the easiest to make guess for what kind of people they are looking for.
Yami (Black Bulls) wants outcasts and people who interest him. He wants to provide a safe growing place for hooligans and outsiders (Ep: 86). This means he also recruits largely outside of the exams. I'd wager that for him, having some physical strength is also a plus (looking at Asta/Magna).
William (Golden Dawn) recruited those with elves' souls and possibly those with great potential for growth - those who could bring hope to normal people. He is probably likely to take already powerful people.
Charlotte (Blue Rose) most likely looks out for passionate women to give them places in the squad and possibility of defending themselves and others. Interestingly enough, it has been mentioned that she also has men in her squad as "errand boys" (Ch:111), which...has implications I don't quite like. I'm not sure what is Charlotte's criteria for choosing men to the squad and I'm not sure I want to know.
Since Fuegoleon's and Nozel's squads also form the Royal Castle Knights (Ch: 173), they both are likely to lean towards more noble candidates. I trust Fuegoleon to discriminate less than Nozel on this part. Everything here is guesswork, though.
Nozel (Silver Eagles) would most likely recruit dedicated and cool-headed people with good amount of mana. I wouldn't be surprised if he only recruited nobles, but as seen with Yuno, probably also takes those with great magical ability.
Fuegoleon (Crimson Lion Kings) probably recruits passionate people who want to protect the Kingdom...with certain amount of mana. I'd suspect that he likes candidates that show analytical skill and strategical skill.
The absolute unknowns for me are the four rest, mainly because we know so little of their squads.
Gueldre (Purple Orca) seems to have picked rather scoundrelly/underhanded types - people with little empathy and possibly quite a bit of ambition. It can be seen in his vice-captain, Xerx Lugner, who is seen as a saint, but is actually cruel and arrogant. Kaiser (Purple Orca) will hopefully have a different approach as the new captain. According to Fuegoleon, he is an upstanding and humble man (which begs the question - how did he end up in Gueldre's squad?), and it might be a sign that he would concentrate more on recruiting similar people as himself.
Jack (Green Mantis) recruited Sekke, who showed some amount of skill in the battle with his Cannonball (being able to defend&attack), but also seems to be rather accurate and have good control over his magic in the exam (Ch:2). En, another from the squad, doesn't really show the same cunning, but also has a great control over his magic. I don't think Jack recruits based on personality as much as people who (or their magic) interests him, perhaps?
Dorothy (Coral Peacock) and her vice-captain, Kirsch, make a very interesting combo. Cheerful dreams + arrogant beauty gives very imaginative vibes. If we knew any more of the squad, I'd imagine they could recruit people with imaginative ways of using their magic and helping them use that with teams. I have no real clue, however, what would be the criteria Dorothy uses.
Rill (Aqua Deer) probably would go for somewhat artistic types? I'd see it very easily at least. Whether they are delicate or wild with their magic, maybe those with some artistic inclination could find a place with him?

If you have any theories yourself, please tell or add here!! I'd be interested to hear them 🥰

you know, Asta and Yuno’s childhood selves remind me of Katsuki and Izuku respectively, but their ensuing circumstances are kinda backwards. Makes me wonder what those two would’ve been like if the roles were reversed…
anyway, who wants a present day outfit swap?

Just how many times can Yuno give Asta that look per episode. You know the look. The one like they’ve been married 10 years and they’ve settled in but Yuno still thinks he’s the luckiest guy in the world. This look:

BC THEORY: Who spread the rumor of Noelle killing Aciee?
ALTERNATIVELY: SILVA PATRIARCH SLANDERPOST
Okay so it's almost midnight, I just chugged a monster energy and brain is filled with ThoughtsTM
From Nozels flashback, he more less saves what little respect I have for him via showing that someone (not limited to 1 person) within the Silva House started a rumor that Aciers death was because of Noelle's birth
My theory is that it's her husband, the Silva patriarch.
From the very limited amount of information we have on Acier Silva, we know for sure that
1. She was the previous captain of the Silver Eagles and had a much more empathetic way of governing it via not being a nobility only squad and training junior mages.
2. She had insane battle prowess, to the point where she was named the Steel War Princess, likely pointing to the fact she had MANY campaigns, likely against Diamond Kingdom. This fact was given to is from the Silva Patriarch (this is important).
3. She liked children and training said junior mages.
From what we can count through her age and the age of her kids, she had Noelle when she was 32-33, she had Solid a year or two prior (30-31), she had Nebra when she was 22-23 and Nozel when she was either 17-18 (???).
Now, strictly medically speaking, having your first born at such a young age can be difficult and then having 3 more is bound to take a toll on your body, especially if the last two are only a year or two apart. Acuer having a difficult pregnancy with Noelle isn't impossible, which may also showcase why Acuer went into seclusion to rest/recover from post-partum.
I'm assuming this is because Acier was more a lover than a fighter and wanted a large family (assuming that her brother is Mimosa's father). No shame in wanting a family, and, from an outline of her character, she was slowly easing her way out of the Active Captain role to more or less Mentor/Passive Captain to the Silver Eagles. She was, essentially, trying to ease into a peaceful life.
Why am I mentioning all this? Because the person who may have spread the assumption that Noelle killed Acier could have very well been the Silva Patriarch.
Now, from how little we see this motherfucker and how he is the head of the house, mostly because Nozel isn't named head, this guy has a very hands off approach to children. Especially considering this may have been a political marriage.
But, first and foremost, we can see that, the memory Noelle has on him, is... well, this.
I want to emphasise that Silva Patriarch calls her the Steel Warrior Princess and how the last thing she left behind, Noelle, was useless.
I'm going off on a limb to say that the reason why Silva Patriarch was so focused on Acier being a warrior, calling Noelle, his own damn child, useless (likely because of her difficulty with magic control) and so unbothered with taking care of his own kids, is probably because he's probably more war/colonialism focused. Since we know for a fact he had Water magic, he probably had a disadvantage to war, unlike Acier, who was able to stand her ground against Mereoleona, despite having a strength and element disadvantage.
Now I'm not saying that Papa Silva married Acier to project his warmonger fantasies on her but ain't no way this man had nothing nothing to do with it.
With that being said, it's probably not unusual that he'd probably be against Acier having Noelle, which may be why he shows so much... resentment or animosity towards her.
So now, he probably saw that Acier had Noelle and then, consequently, her health declined drastically, essentially ending whatever campaigns he had in mind, man's probably lost his mind in rage and, seeing as how he may have been against Aciers last pregnancy, blamed all of it on Noelle.
It would make sense. No one, NO ONE, with a decent fucking brain would blame a literal child for the death of the head of the house, especially if that child is an infant, the last mementos of the head of said house and was the spitting image of them as well. Especially if they had very little standing in that house.
For the rumor to be spread, believed and accepted, the person who would have had to declare it would be someone who the rest of the house would see as reliable, authoritative and someone who had the context of the situation.
Papa Silva fits the criteria, fits the characterisation and, if my assumptions are correct, has every motive to lash out on Noelle as some petty form of vengeance.
It would also be someone Nozel couldn't refute/go against. Seeing as how Nozel would be next in line as heir, he COULD have dismissed any malicious rumors against Noelle if it were someone not from the direct family branch. Maybe not outright deny rumors because of the curse, but definitely not make it so that its pinning all the blame on the newborn.
The only person who could have the authority to actively make the statement malicious and with the intent to blame Noelle and NOT get his ass whooped by Nozels mentally unstable ass, would be the current head of the household.
TL;DL: Papa Silva was likely a colonial fuckhead that used Acier for his war campaigns and was severely against her being a mother, which she refused to comply to, and when she died due to Megicula's curse, he essentially was the one who kickstarted the cycle of Noelle's abuse.
Tabata, if you start the political/clover rebellion arc after this one, I sincerely ask that you get Nozel to get his ass in gear and unionise the Silva siblings to make this image canon:

I like to think that Julius knows what's going on in Charlotte's head, that's why he is the only one who's not surprised at the end 😂

I just finished Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish after waiting for it to be available after what felt like forever… and the wait was so so worth it.
I RECOMMEND YOU TO WATCH IT
I legit thought it would just be “just another anime film” and will end unhappily (because of the plot of the live action series) but it turned out greater than I expected… (ahem I may have cried buckets on this film which I never thought will happen but look at my puffy as fuck eyes now).
Simplistic yet excellently executed, enough to warm the deepest depths of my heart — seriously, my eyes still hurt from crying over it. I think it is superb as its a simple love story between the main characters without complicated supernatural/sci-fi elements (ahem maybe 80% of romance anime… no shade though as I did enjoy some of them).
The movie was heartbreaking and heartwarming, a real roller coaster ride of emotions.
Even without comparing it to other romantic anime films, Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish is remarkable by itself.
Umm… does anyone know if there’s an English translation of the light novel though?
also Josie is adorable and this chonky black kitty yukichi
