Opinions are like assholes right? Everybody’s got ‘em and a lot of the time they stink, especially when it comes to parenting. 🤔 If you’re anything like me, parenting will occupy your mind a majority of the time. How to get your child to obey? How to not feel overwhelmed by it all? How the hell to make time slow down so you don’t feel so damn old? 👵🏻 Parenting can turn into an obsession, but ya know what, it’s (probably) all going to be ok. Why do I think that? Because in those quiet moments, when I can observe my kids playing and smiling or learning something new, that’s when time slows down, when I don’t feel so overwhelmed, and I’m not worrying about behavior for once. That’s when I know my kids are happy and healthy and loved. ❤️ And those opinions? No! No! NOOOOO! 🤬😏 To be a parent means to nurture. To sometimes nag but with the best intentions. To wonder if what you’re going through is normal (it often is). To try to fill your child’s needs while also tending to your own. To feel like your nerves are shredded and to want nothing more than nighttime to come so you can finally get some peace. 🌜✨ Around every corner is a new challenge. One of the greatest joys in my life has been becoming a mom. I love the memories we make together as a family and seeing my kids achieve milestones (hello kindergarten!). 📝 . Sometimes it’s a mess and mistakes are made (some by me, some by the kids). Sometimes there are meltdowns because hey, they’re kids and they’re not great at sharing (“MINE!” anyone? 😆). . But mostly we manage. How much have you learned since becoming a parent? Did you know you could love someone so incredibly much but also feel like they were driving you absolutely looney?? Did you realize how lonely being a parent could feel sometimes? Or that you would experience loss, whether of yourself or of a physical sort? Did you know this life of yours would go by so quickly and half of it would be spent doing laundry? Or had you experienced the pain of stepping on a Lego? 😖😏 Parenthood threw me for a loop. I wouldn’t change it for the world, but it is a labor of love. From setting limits to getting them to listen, the load never seems to lift, it just...shifts. I try to remember that they’re only little for so long; that I can only lie to them for a little while, letting them believe that superheroes are real and mom and dad can keep the monsters away. And I long for their laughs, because they lift my spirits and light me up. 🥰🌟 I’ve learned so much and still have a long way to go. I don’t know about your kids, but mine are bundles of kinetic energy. My son especially bounds into our room and slams into our bed daily (it’s upholstered). Kapow! 💥 He just punched me in the stomach. Why? Because he wants to play fight...but does he give me a heads up? Nope. 🙄 And boy, are they klutzy! Did my kid just trip and fall for the 1000th time? Yup. Better get used to it. Momma kisses are magical, use that knowledge to your advantage before they grow out of it. 💋 One of the most important things I hope to instill in my children is kindness. Joy. One of the first feelings you get when you become a parent and also one that makes up for a lot of the other not-so-great feelings. 😃😢🤬 Because to be a parent means to juggle. To juggle feelings of joy mixed with feelings of exasperation. To do the job tirelessly and withstand the judgement (whether internal or external) for every choice you make. To sometimes feel like you’re in jail in your own home and that that home is a jungle of toys and laundry and never-ending chores. 🏀👕🧹 Find the joy. Make jokes and laugh - at your kids and yourself and the crazy messed up situations. If you need some help, let me get you started. Irony. Perhaps the best definition of parenthood. That innocent infant you thought you would never give an iPad to grows into a troublesome imp who loves to irritate you until you hand over the screen and submit. The image of the perfect family gets smashed by unexpected illness or feelings of isolation and depression after the baby is born. 😔 Parenthood is anything but ideal. But what I’m still learning is to try and let go of those ideals and embrace the imperfections. To inhale the good shit and exhale the bullshit! Happy Holidays! 🎄☃️🎅🏼🌟 . We all know parenting is hard. And the holidays can make it even more stressful. One way that I cope is with honesty and humor. Or by asking for help when I can’t stand the sight of another handprint. Because tbh there’s times when I hate being a parent, when I’m feeling hormonal and all I want to do is hide. And no amount of hugs can make it better. . But through it all I have hope. Hope that I’m making the right decisions, hope that one day I’ll have (too much) time for myself, hope that tomorrow will be easier. Because without hope, what is there? F has been my favorite letter to illustrate so far. So many defining words of parenthood here. So many teachable moments. 👩🏻‍🏫 Accepting that failure, frustration, and fears are an everyday occurrence in your life now as well as so much FUN. And my son is great at arguing, which causes me a ton of anxiety, and leads to anger (ta-da!).
