He watched me silently, his jaw clenched as if he had to physically keep himself from saying anything. He had shed his jacket, vest, and boots, leaving him in just his loose white shirt and dark gray trousers. His hair was messy, as if he had run his hands through it several times. His gorgeous hazel eyes were wary. I looked away and smoothed the skirt of my nightgown against my legs, suddenly understanding why he chose to admit to everything from the other side of a door. I did not know how to say what needed saying.

I bit the inside of my lip, praying the desperate hope and desire in my chest was not visible on my face. I smoothed an imaginary wrinkle from my gown. My voice was nothing more than a whisper. “We could start with a kiss?”

“I do not recall hearing you had many suitors before your betrothal,” Lillianna commented. She ignored Nik’s glare, her cold hazel eyes fixed on me. “Your parents kept you quite isolated.”

“My parents gave me to my aunt and uncle to raise,” I said cooly, my patience slipping. It would not do to lose my temper with the queen, but I could only handle so many of the polite barbs she and the king appeared determined to aim at Nikolas and me. For a fleeting moment I imagined throwing my fork directly at Lillianna’s face. “They preferred to remain at home at Gildore most years rather than make the journey to court.”
