said this on twitter but media analysis that divorces characters from their genre is inherently flawed and stupid. also, media analysis that treats characters as separate from fiction is inherently flawed and stupid. nothing makes me roll my eyes harder than the phrase “in real life” when reading someone’s ship or character post.

we need to stop seeing characters or their relationships as distinct from fiction. they are fictional, and therefore, do not follow the rules of ~real life.~ if an author wants to make a ship of two sixteen year olds endgame soulmates, then your commentary about high school relationships not working long term does not apply. characters are vehicles with which to tell a broader story. if you divorce them from that context, your analysis falls apart.
