Entry 8: Working in New Media
Comparing the process of completing a school assignment on Tumblr instead of using paper and ink, Tumblr is definitely easier and fun. What makes Tumblr more fun and easy is the way the posts are online to see. Instead of sharing to your teacher or downloading it and sending it to Google Classroom we can just post on the platform. Psychologically I feel like I use my time better on Tumblr because it feels like I’m not being forced to use this. Knowing that it’s a multi-purpose app makes the experience better when doing something boring like homework.
Information and ideas are communicated very effectively on Tumblr. This because of the use of other media tools such as video clips, images, and etc. There is a much wider variety of tools to express your ideas because reading lines of text do not pop out as much. Having the images especially in your posts make so much of a difference because some things are better explained in a picture compared to a line or words.
There are definitely more advantages than disadvantages. For one, Tumblr is very easy to signup to and is a free app that can be downloaded on your computer or phone. It supports things such as Grammarly which is very beneficial to your writing. It’s very easy to see and keep track of your work once it is posted. Everything is very organized, I was not confused about the function of the app and how to use it. The disadvantages are the use inside of the school. In order to log into Tumblr, you have must have access to a computer or a phone. Depending on the technology problems I could be out of a computer for 30 minutes. Tumblr also requires wifi so if the Wifi is not available I can not work offline like Google Docs.
My work has been shaped in the way that it is more informative, having the links and images makes my work more clear. The content is more fun compared to a normal English essay/ any other essay. The biggest change in my work is that during this project I did a lot for enjoyment. Never have I done my homework and openly wanted to do it. I feel like this platform has put much more meaning into my work and made me much more productive in this assignment.

Entry 7: What Do You Meme?
This is the Saskue meme. It’s a meme that blew up on Twitter from anime fans everywhere. It caught on like wildfire because of the popularity of the anime that it is in called NARUTO. It is a special meme because its format works well with everything.
Example below.
The history of the Sasuke meme comes from a Japanese manga called Naruto which was a huge hit in pop culture and was turned into an anime. This scene is when Sasuke tries to kill his older brother Itachi but sadly is not strong enough and gets caught up in this position instead.
We can deconstruct the meme through the audience. Anime is very popular. Despite it coming from Japan it makes its way across the world. Collectively, publishers, developers, animators, and other creative artists and agencies are responsible for generating close to $16 billion annually. It would make more money but fans have to stream some anime due to it not being available in their country. The anime fanbase has to be some of the most diehard people in history. In my own experiences, I have talked to complete strangers for 30 minutes just because they were talking about anime. Anime brings people together. Its audience ranges from young kids to full grown adults. Why this meme is so popular is because it creates a fun template for anime fans to combine any picture with Sasuke to make it look like they’re choking him. This meme can relate to any anime fan and through the combination of images, it can be funny to anyone.

Entry 6 – Exploring Genre
youtube
The Avengers Endgame trailer is a perfect example of the superhero/ action movie genre.
Focusing on iconography, at the start of the trailer we can see Tony Stark in his Ironman suit in the sand, he’s badly hurt so he must have just been in a fight. It follows with dramatic music which is a key component of every superhero/ action movie. The trailer shows many times Ironman’s mask which is a prop used in every Ironman/ Avengers’ movie. On the super suits, buildings, and vehicles we can see the Avengers’ symbol. As well as this we can see weapons varying from guns to swords in a lot of shots. These genres most typically resolve their problems using violence wielding those weapons. Spaceships also occur in the trailer more than once and they have become recently a big part in the superhero genre becoming their means of transport.
The structure of the trailer is very dramatic and dark. There are two types of superhero/ action movies: light and fun or dark and gritty. This trailer is dark and gritty. The trailer starts off slow then slowly rises with the action with high-intensity scenes and explosions. It starts off slow to introduce the problems that will be seen in the film and to summarize what happened in the last film. It then brings in the audience with the eye candy scenes, why everyone watches these films. The fights with every hero fighting to their death to see who will prevail.
The theme is the most common in almost all superhero/ action movies. They are set on a task to save the world. They will most likely have a big action sequence as it shows scenes in the trailer of different fights. Time and time again this theme is seen such as movies like Superman, Batman, any Avengers movie, Ironman, Wonderwoman, Mission Impossible and etc. This theme has become the heart of all superhero/ action movies.

Entry 4 – Internet Regulation
I believe the Canadian government should create new federal laws of its own to regulate the internet, specifically targeting material that supports terrorism, incites violence, encourages suicide, disinformation, cyberbullying, and inappropriate material that is accessible to children. I believe that some forms of internet regulation would be unnecessary but targeting those specific things on the internet would be beneficial. Stopping these things would only decrease the number of problems that many people have when on the internet. To me, I see no benefit of these things being available to people except for their freedom of searching.
The relationship between technology, freedom of speech, and ethical conduct is that they are all very important when it comes to the internet, not limiting freedom of speech is a big issue when it comes to regulation so we need to make sure not to do that, making sure that there is an ethical conduct to the internet is important because so we can conduct business on the internet with integrity, technology is now becoming more advanced everyday, with this change we need to make sure that the tools we are using are being used right.
I believe it is feasible to try and regulate something as amorphous as the internet because of how many people have access to it in today's society. It’s that 56.1% have access to the internet as of April 2019, that is 3.2 billion people. More than 400,000 searches each month are related to extremist material. In a world where most Candian people have access to the internet wouldn’t it be the safe thing to guard them against cyberbullying which many youths are affected by each year resulting in suicide or self-harm? Freedom of speech is one thing but in a world where you can hide behind a computer and say anything then the consequences become deadly for some. It would only be smart to regulate so we can cause less harm in youth, stop online support for terrorism and stop things that incite violence.

Entry 3 – Analyzing Media Representations

youtube
Soda pop in new media is typically portrayed as this drink that brings families together and creates a feeling of happiness. Many of these Soda companies’ ideologies include quality, responsibility and trust. Coca Cola’s personal ideologies are “To refresh the world...To inspire moments of optimism and happiness...To create value and make a difference”.
youtube
This video challenges Soda’s ideologies because of the environmental impact that these companies make. Pepsi for example uses palm oil in their drinks which is illustrated from the video above, palm oil is not only bad for you health wise but also terrible for the environment in the way we retrieve it. This ad shows people not coming together but instead running away and feeling disgusted. There is no feeling of happiness in this video the moment she opens the can, it shows the true nature of some of the company. This video was very hard to find because it was taken off of YouTube by Pepsi themselves. I believe the way Soda is portrayed in the media will never change. Never will a Soda company illustrate how it’s own Soda is unhealthy for consumption because no one wants to hear that as well as them being too big to fail at this point.

Entry 2 – Assessing McLuhan
“We shape our tools and afterwards, our tools shape us.”
The validity of this probe is very logical. We started to make computers and more advanced technology such as smartphones and etc until the point that we rely heavily on them. Young people especially are shaped by the tools that we have made because of the access of information. No longer do we have to go to other sources of media to get our information. Personally I have not gone to the library since grade five and haven’t picked up a physical newspaper since around the same time. And they way we use these tools affects the way we act and think. So saying that are tools are shaping us is quite accurate.
We can apply this probe to Instagram. Instagram is one of the most popular social media websites and it is addictive. It shapes me because I go on Instagram on average 40 minutes a day. That doesn’t seem like a lot but that is just because of how little you can do on the app except for like and view photos/videos. So 40 minutes is quite a lot and now that takes up time in my day. This generation of people are very social media conscious. Something as getting little likes on a post can make you sad or unpopular. Instagram shapes the way we think and act: no longer can I post a picture on Instagram without expecting some sort of validation. In a way it’s a nice feeling that you can have an instagram with a lot of followers and likes. For people in general who take Instagram more seriously in their everyday lives will post every single day, it becomes a routine for them and in some cases a job. Instagram models and influencers are very popular among young people. Now because of Instagram we can now be influenced even more than in the past because it is a reflection of how you live your life. All of the most followed models on Instagram are shaping young girls to think that they need to be the ideal version of a woman by posting things that make people feel inadequate and does the opposite of body positivity.
Snapchat as well heavily influences us. Snapchat to me is personally a very odd idea and I struggled to understand its importance until. Every part of snapchat is designed to make the person seem like they have to use it. Snap streaks for example are a meaningless number of the amount of days you have snapchatted someone in a row, for some reason you feel sad if you lose one and accomplished when it’s a high number. Snap scores also have the same effect, they are based on how many people you have on snapchat for everyone to publically see. Snapchat as well as other forms of digital media have different types of news outlets as a main feature on the app. There is informative news as well as complete garbage. But what snapchat does is give us the garbage news, the news that isn’t important, doesn’t inform us of actual world events but instead of the celebrity drama happening that day. This shapes people by making our priority when we go on this app to focus on the unimportant stuff and become desensitized to our own awareness of the situation. When people go on the app they don’t go on to become informed but to instead be on the app for the sake of being on the app, mindlessly reading the celebrity news.

I feel like I use new media less than the average high school student. Taking in that this is weekly, my numbers for instagram for example are around 50 minutes on a daily average. Meanwhile I know people that spend hours a day on the app. I believe in 10 years from now that I won’t be using new media to the same extent as I do now. I believe this because most of these apps will probably have a downfall and will stopped being used as we have already seen on FaceBook, Netflix and YouTube will keep going but I plan in my later life to be less attached to new media as it consumes a lot of my time.
