>>AARON TYLER EVANSWhen I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.

Aaron set her down with care, curious as to the suddenness, but just wanting her to be comfortable. All his goal was for to keep her smile up for as long as he could that day.
His smile grew at the light kiss, warmth spreading over his features. The blonde boy let her find purchase on the rocks for a moment, before slipping his hand into hers. It was soft and small in his much bigger hands. He didn’t think too much of it, assuming she just wanted a brace if she slipped. And he was all to happy to make sure she was safe.

Juliette paused, unsure if he would understand her. Thankfully, he seemed to somewhat get her, and she nodded vigorously. Aaron confirmed that he was fine, and was suddenly concerned with her wanting to be put down. At some point, she would have to get back on her own two feet, but for now, she just laughed, shaking her head at him.
His gaze stuck on hers, though, and her smile faded, less from laughter, easing into a more natural, warm expression that seemed to spread through her like a warm drink on a cold day. The sun was warm and she was far too happy.
Julie.
Only Jesse called her that. Well, up until now. Those bright blue eyes got big, and despite herself, her cheeks flushed. Every irritating ‘let your facial expressions express how you’re feeling instead of your words’ lesson that was drilled into her when learning ASL was backfiring on her, because as much as she tried to keep her inner workings hidden, she was an open book. Juliette let out a squeak, then effectively hid her face against Aaron’s chest.
What he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him, right?
There were a lot of things that he didn’t know that would make him hate her. Juliette drew back, seeking for an answer in his eyes and only finding a sweet, earnest boy. Damnit, he didn’t need to be involved in this. Juliette’s smile faltered a little, and she squirmed slightly, indicating for him to put her down. She knew he would. There was never a lapse in trust between them.
Slowly, carefully, her bare feet met the rocks. Juliette got on her toes, pressing her hands to Aaron’s chest. She quickly kissed his cheek, then turned away, walking carefully on the rocks back towards the beach. Her hand was trailing behind her, an offer to him that he could either accept or reject.
He could stay, he could go. He could take that hand, or he could brush her off. Juliette wasn’t sure what she wanted at this point.

Aaron was so comfortably enjoying the moment that he almost didn’t see her questioning, his eyes surprised as he looked at her, picking up some of her message.
“Am I, O.K.?” He asked, furrowing his eyebrows with a warm smile.“Yes, sweetheart, why wouldn’t I be?”
He followed her gaze down, finding a slight understanding. “With walking? Or you? Or both?” Aaron squeezed her lightly to display his ease. “I’m perfect, Julie. But if you’d like to be put down, just let me know, alright?”
Aaron searched her eyes, a gentle concern in his. He wanted her to be comfortable and to have as good of a day as possible. She was someone who seemed, even in the few moments they’d spent together, to understand him. And he didn’t take that lightly.

She was happy. Maybe Juliette was easily pleased, or maybe she was just trying to find what little good there was in life. Either way, she was watching as he carried her across the rocks, giggling the whole way, her laughter cracked and breathy. The air out by the ocean was her favorite, now especially since she was much higher than she usually was.
Spoiled. Well, she hadn’t been spoiled with affection as a child after her siblings were born, so maybe she craved it. Juliette would deny it, but she seemed to really enjoy it, and it usually showed up when she clung to Jesse.
For now, she was clutched in Aaron’s arms, and she worried that he may tire. It was now she really noticed her smaller whiteboard was way off at the beach, and Julie let out a small sigh. She pouted, resting her forehead against Aaron’s shoulder for a moment before she looked at him.
With what broad, easily understood sign language she hoped he would get, using exaggerated hand motions and very slow finger spelling, she asked him what worried her.
“You okay?”
She wanted to say he was welcome to put her down, but she was fine there, but it was hard to articulate that when he didn’t know sign, and her speaking to him was absolutely out of the question. Glancing down, she also worried about him being forced to balance both their weight.

Aaron felt sweetness at how light Juliette was in his arms, her little sounds and laughs making his chest swell. He watched her carefully, ready to set her down whenever she gave the sign. But she seemed comfortable, for now.
He followed her line of sight to the rocks, grinning at the sight. “There? Alright, here we go.”
Aaron made sure he had her securely and closed the distance between them and the rocks.
He didn’t even notice the lack of the whiteboard.
His feet found purchase easily on the rocks, making sure, more than usual that he was balanced with the additional (even if small) weight of Juliette.

Juliette’s laughter was sweet but breathy, filled with little squeaks that ran through the open air. This was home. This was everything she loved back before her innocence was shredded and handed to her on a piece of paper in a hospital room. She ran towards the water, letting out a shriek as she was grabbed.
Instinct made her pause for a few seconds, ready to fight, ready to wriggle away, but then she was scooped up, and Juliette heard Aaron’s voice in her ear. The anxiety washed away, and the mute girl just giggled, realizing she’d dropped her whiteboard in the sand somewhere.
For lack of better words, she just laughed some more, wrapping her arms around Aaron’s neck and clinging onto him. The tiny girl laughed into the space between his neck and his shoulder, her fingers making signs against his back that wouldn’t even make sense if he was looking at them.
Just don’t let Jesse see, dear lord.
At some point, she was going to have to communicate, but instead, Juliette just laughed, then finally lifted her head and grinned at Aaron. She paused, then pointed towards a long stream of rocks that once helped support a pier. Too many days had she run off to walk on those rocks.
Maybe she should get her whiteboard.
…
No, she enjoyed being up there. The world was a much bigger place when she wasn’t so damn close to the ground.

Aaron grinned as he watched her run off, feeling unquestionably pleased with the day. He gave her a moment before he rushed off after her.
His longer legs and athletics made it completely possible for him to catch up with her in a second, but he slowed himself down a bit, making it more of a chase.
It still didn’t take him long to catch up, reaching out his arms and scooping her up, haphazardly making sure they didn’t tumble into the water. “Gotcha.” He said, teasing in his voice.

Juliette grinned. Despite her quiet nature and the way she had been raised, there was still a glimmer of the girl who wanted to be a princess left in her. A child version of her would spend days at the beach, convinced she would become a mermaid.
Today, she just wanted to feel normal. With a quick scribble on her whiteboard, she went to try and communicate her excitement, but found that in her hurry, she’d smudged the entire thing.
Damnit.
Juliette shook her head, then tried again.
“Life is so much more than four walls. Now, if you’ll come with me, I’ll show you a part of my childhood.” Julie grinned, then held up her board again.
“Look at you, all capable and adult-y. Let’s see how your training holds up to my short legs and years of being chased by a painfully taller than me little brother.”
She stuck out her tongue, and then ran, clearly expecting him to chase her, taking off with a laugh that was almost normal.
