Lets interrupt the TMNT packaging process posts for a throwback Thurs as I’ve not done one of those in a minute. This was the cover I did to the TMNT universe for IDW. I was in the midst of drawing an issue of G.I.Joe for them and they asked me to do the turtles issue. I of course sad yes not realizing it was a 4 turtles free issue and an issue that involved a lot of drawing of cars, not my strong suit. However the cover needed to be finished before I even started the issue. I also needed to design this new version of that Dreadmon. I remember struggling with getting his size right to look like he made chef the guys on the inside. I like the car perspective a lot. While the front TMNT backing card art was off being approved. I was righting up the back. The @mondonews boys wanted like all the classics action figures in sort of a pizza party hang out. This was a real challenge but a lot of fun. I pulled out all the old action figures and had them hanging all around my desk. Since we’ve got TMNT on the brain let’s throwback to this cover I did for IDW. This was the first thing I ever did for the TMNT on any official capacity. I remember the editor told me to just do something classic. I had been reading the IDW series and was loving and also felt like this might be my only chance to draw the turtles so I threw everything in there! In retrospect I would have done something a little more classic now, but luckily this wasn’t my last chance to draw the turtles. I still like this cover quite a bit, shredders arm is to long but otherwise it’s got some nice things going for it. My favorite Wolfmen. A few years ago I actually did a drawing a day for inktober. All horror characters. Here the wolfmen I did. For these inktober drawings it was sort of the first time I had successfully merged charcoal and ink. I really love the effect and I’ve used it a lot since. At times to great success and other times a sloppy mess haha. It can save some major time to give a nice background effect in a commission!
