Poet Taylor Steele captures the problem with appropriating Black slang.
In her poem âAAVEâ (which stands for African-American Vernacular English) Taylor Steele explains why appropriation of Black slang is the worst. African-American culture is being popularized on a daily basis and while Black people are judged and mistreated for using something they came up with ages ago, White people come off as cool and original when they use it.

I feel like such a boring teenager compared to my parents and their friends like they were all out destroying the economy and doing irreversible damage to the environment and all I do is sleep and eat fries

I need a cigarette Or something just as destructive A big dose of lemon haze A freshly sharpened blade A drink or two Maybe even a noose But the problem with Needing these things Is that they will take My anxiety away Theyâll relieve my depression And calm my nerves This is why I need them⌠But if I get them, If I lose these parts of me, I donât know who Iâll be. I am my anxiety Depression Pain I am nothing more than illness Without it Iâll simply Cease to exist And I donât want that, Not now, Because I wonât let you Feel guilty about this.

Beautiful Day
Itâs a nice day outside.
The skies are clear.
Spring is near.
So why do I feel so dead inside?
The sun rays beam down on my skin.
Trying to warm my blood within.
But all I feel is coldness.
This aching in my heart,
Makes no sense.
A steady pounding in my chest.
Letting me know Iâm functioning like all the rest.
But not really,
Numbness in my core.
My new hobby is staring at the floor.
I look and sound just like you.
But maybe if you knew.
How every tear rolling down my face.
Leaves a scar in its place.
You wouldnât be so quick.
To put me in a stereotypical case.
But nonetheless,
Itâs a beautiful day
And who am I to say
That everything wonât be okay.

Our prayers and thoughts are with Lahore, Pakistan - where at least 30 people have been killed in a suicide bombing. We must remember that terror doesnât discriminate; when it affects one of us, it affects all of us.
