TYRE SERVICES NEW & PART WORN
Top tyre tips Check your pressures
You'll find the recommended pressures inside the drivers' manual. Check the pressure when the tyre is cold, as even a short journey will warm up tyres and raise the pressure. Under-inflation can cause tyre damage, uneven wear, and an increase in fuel consumption. Over inflated tyres give a less comfortable ride and wear out in the centre of the tread. Check the pressure in the spare tyre to ensure it's ready in an emergency.
Check your treads
Worn tyres mean less grip. Abnormal or uneven wear can often be an indication of a mechanical defect on the vehicle. In these circumstances the mechanical parts (steering, wheel alignment, brakes) should be check immediately.
Check for damage Look for cuts, cracks and bulges or any other evidence of damage from violent impact or kerbing. Damaged tyres may be illegal and can be dangerous
Know the tyre law
The legal minimum tread depth for car tyres in the United Kingdom and the European Community is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three quarters of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
Most car type tyres have tread wear indicators, usually at least six small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves, and when the tread surface becomes level with these ribs the tyre is at the legal limit and must be replaced.
One of the features of tyre tread pattern designs is to give good grip in wet conditions. Generally speaking available grip reduces as the tyre wears or as the road surface water depth increases and you should reduce speed in such conditions.
The 1.6mm minimum legal limit applies to:
Cars and passenger vehicles with up to 8 seated passengers - not including the driver Motor vehicles and light trailers (including caravans) up to 3500 kg gross vehicle weigh

GARAGES IN PORTSMOUTH
FULL GARAGE Services we Offer
Brakes GARAGES IN PORTSMOUTH -The rigours of stop/go motoring on today's overcrowded roads can place tremendous demands on brakes. So for maximum safety and peace of mind it makes sense to have your brakes checked regularly. Stop by at A1 AUTOMAC and our fully trained brake specialists will be happy to provide you with a comprehensive brake inspection - completely free of charge!
Are your brakes in working order? Just like exhausts, when your brakes have a problem they will let you know. Common signs of brake problems include:
A squealing or grinding noise when braking Brakes juddering when applied If the vehicle pulls to one side when braking A grinding noise when the brakes are applied A grinding noise when the brakes are off A loss of efficiency during heavy braking or on a long descent A high hard brake pedal Rear wheels locking upon braking
If you are experiencing any of the above brake symptoms don't wait until it's too late. Clutches We supply and fit car clutches to suit all makes and models of cars.
Heres a few tips to prolong the life of car clutches;
Don’t rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving; you will take up the slack between thrust and release bearings and wear them out Don’t leave the car in gear with your foot on the clutch at traffic lights for the same reason Don’t hold the car on a hill by slipping the clutch for longer than absolutely necessary when doing a hill-start. You will wear out the friction surface Release the handbrake gradually with your thumb on the release button as you lift the clutch and press the accelerator Don’t slip clutches deliberately to avoid changing gear Make sure that there is a little free play in the pedal movement before you start to feel the weight; if there is no slack you may need to adjust the cable housing or the clutch rod If you have hydraulic clutch control, make sure the reservoir is as well topped up as that for the brake system. How will I know if my clutch is worn out?
Is your clutch in working order?
The main symptoms of burnt out clutches are as follows:- Difficulty in engaging gear Normally there will be the classic crunching noise Inability to engage gear at all A juddering when pulling away from a stationary position The engine RPM increases when the throttle pedal is depressed, but vehicle speed does not increase as it would normally be expected to do A pronounced burning smell Shock Absorbers We supply and fit a large range of car shock absorbers, all at competitive prices.
Worn shock absorbers not only reduce driver comfort; they can also dramatically affect the handling and safety of your vehicle. Our fully trained technicians will be happy to inspect your shock absorbers - completely free of charge! If necessary they will also offer you replacements from our extensive choice of top brand names - all fitted quickly and professionally!
Defective shock absorbers:
Reduce braking efficiency Reduce road holding Increase wear on tyres and other mechanical parts of your vehicle Aircon Colder weather often brings misty windscreens. Using warm or cold dry air from your Air Conditioning Unit can clear your screen in seconds, but to achieve this your system has to be working fully efficiently.
We will take a temperature reading from your air conditioning system; remove all the old refrigerant gas, oil and dye. They then clean the whole system and remove any moisture within. Once the system has been thoroughly cleansed our technicians will inject new oil, dye and refrigerant gas and take a temperature reading again to ensure that the service has made a difference to the cold air temperature.
This process will ensure that your air conditioning system is working to its full potential.
We also carry out an air conditioning clean service removes all the harmful bacteria that can build up within the air conditioning system. By circulating a special cleaner through all air intakes and venting systems this service removes any unpleasant smells, leaving your car smelling clean and fresh.
It is recommended that this clean is carried out once a year, however if your car has an unpleasant odour then it may worthwhile getting in touch with A1 Automac TODAY to rectify.

WHEEL ALIGNMENT PORTSMOUTH
Hunter Hawkeye 4 Wheel Alignment
Having a four wheel alignment check should be part of any responsible motorists servicing procedure. By having your vehicle checked annually or every 12 – 15,000 miles you can:
Reduce Tyre Wear Mis-alignment is a major cause of unnecessary tyre wear. A properly aligned car can add thousands of miles to tyre life.
Reduce Fuel Consumption Fuel consumption decreases as rolling resistance decreases. A correctly set four wheel alignment along with proper tyre pressures minimises the rolling resistance.
Save Money and the Environment By preventing premature tyre wear (and early tyre disposal) and improving fuel economy/carbon emissions, it not only reduces the cost of motoring, but will help the environment too!
Improve Handling Does your car pull to one side? Do you constantly have to move the steering wheel to keep your car travelling straight ahead?
Many handling problems can be corrected by four wheel alignment. With all the system components aligned properly, road shock is more efficiently absorbed for a smoother ride
Ensure Safer Driving Mis-alignment can affect handling and can make the car unsafe. A suspension system inspection is part of the alignment procedure; this will help highlight any worn or damaged parts before they cause a more costly problem.
What should I expect from a four wheel alignment service? The Hunter imaging wheel alignment system measures 14 primary alignment angles. These include camber, caster, thrust line and set back and of course, toe in or toe out on front and rear wheels. Comparisons are then made against the vehicle manufacturers’ data, for your specific car.
The initial measurement should take no more than 15 – 25 minutes. The alignment technician will then be able to discuss with you, the findings and which adjustments are necessary.
When the alignment adjustments are complete, you will be presented with your personalised printout, showing the ‘before and after’ measurements. This is your guarantee that the work has been carried out to your satisfaction and should be kept with your vehicle servicing records.
CHOOSE A1 Automac TODAY the ideal choice is Alignment in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
