Sadly, I couldn't participate in the Fence Challenge last month, so I decided I would post some of the prompts I liked a lot now
Technically it's not the challenge anymore but eyyy - fanart is fanart regardless
Prompt day 1 was 'Swap' - and I thought swapping personalities instead of just the positions would be fun too so here you go

This AU gave me an idea for matching covers and I made the mistake of bookbinding 250k for my first attempt. 🫣 I will redo both of these to look better at some point, but both first prints were conveniently finished before the AU prompt day and that was too good of a coincidence not to post. I am still looking for some funny fake reviews to slap on the back of cherished things so if you read these fics, please share! Thank you @internetbanality for the first blurb
(I might need some bonus content as well since the fic is kind of short. AO3 comments / the progress sketches / author commentary / memes??)

Coalition Lance AU (con't)
When it comes time for the new ships to be tested, Sam finds Lance where he's set up in the cafeteria, computer and notes spread across the table. He asks that the young paladin be present for when they bring out one of the ships for the various officers and cadets to preview.
Lance happily accepts the invite.
He stays on the edges of the gathered group, not having found a place among them since his return. His legs are restless as he takes in Sam's ship from afar. Part of him yearns to get closer, to jump straight into the pilot's seat and test it out himself.
Sam stands before the crowd and begins his presentation of the ship he designed. While his attention is more directed at the five most promising pilots of Lance's old class, his eyes dart to Lance every so often as if the information is just as much for him as it is for the ones that have been assigned to fly.
At the end, he asks, "are we ready for the demonstration?"
Sanda and Iverson give the okay for Sam to show them just what his ship can do. Rather than head for the pilot's seat, the scientist turns to Lance and holds out a helmet.
Butterflies fill his gut at the prospect of flying once more. It's been months since he last got to fly and he finds himself missing the rush of being up in the air and beyond the reach of gravity. He misses Red.
Before he can accept the offer, Iverson intercepts.
"We can't have our cadets piloting your ship, yet. They don't even have a simulation to practice on and you expect them to fly this thing?" The commander pointedly gestures to the five pilots he handpicked when he says "cadets" and Lance tries to ignore the familiar pang in his chest when he's reminded how little faith the Garrison has in him as a pilot. They've been able to reluctantly accept him in a diplomatic role, but nothing more.
"You're right. Your cadets will need more training before they can take over any of these newer ships," Sam says. "But Lance already knows how to fly ships like this. The Lions of Voltron are far more advanced than anything we have on Earth, plus my designs are derived from Altean and Galran ships, which Lance is plenty familiar with."
"He couldn't complete a simulator of our own designs, how are we going to trust him to fly these? You can do the demonstration, Lieutenant Holt."
Sam refuses yet again.
"I can pilot a ship when needed, but these are going into battle. We need someone with battle experience to test these."
The looks on the officers' faces say they don't believe for a second that Lance has seen battle.
Sam takes a different approach.
"Lance, Voltron helped planets advance their technology, correct?"
"Uh, yeah..." He's not sure where the change in subject is coming from.
"Tell us what that looked like - what role did each paladin take up in that process?"
Lance shuffles under the eyes of the crowd. "Well... Princess Allura, Coran, and Shiro would handle most of the diplomatic stuff. Pidge and Hunk would work on the technology - the weapons and ships and all that." It suddenly clicks. He knows what Sam is after. "Keith and I would find other stuff to help with. Sometimes that was patrolling or sometimes we were helping with rebuilding efforts. But once Pidge and Hunk had the upgraded ships ready, we would help out with the test flights."
"Right! And those weren't ships you got to study first."
"Right."
"And they weren't always the same."
"Yeah, some planets had really advanced stuff going on already and just needed little upgrades, but other planets were barely as advanced as Earth. The controls and ship designs were all over the place. Keith and I would get a crash course in how to pilot them, take a few minutes to calibrate ourselves to them, then run through battle drills to see how well they'd hold up against the Galra ships."
"Yes! This is exactly what we need right now." Sam addresses the officers. "Lance has been through this whole process before, multiple times, and is the only one here that can give me feedback that will be useful to our mission."
They argue back and forth for a while longer. Sam refuses to take the ship into the air himself and it becomes clear that letting Lance pilot is the only way they'll see that ship take flight anytime soon.
It makes it all the more satisfying when Lance lifts himself into the pilot's seat, helmet securely on his head, and Sam giving him the crash course. He can feel Iverson's glare and those of all the pilots and cadets that were looked over in favor of their once-classmate that was notorious for flunking the simulator. Hunk and Pidge are going to love hearing about this moment.
When it powers up, he can feel the touch of Altean technology thrumming through the machine. It's just a hint, but enough that the ship reacts to him in a way typical Earth ships wouldn't.
Getting used to the controls doesn't take long. Like Sam said, he based the designs on something familiar to what Lance has been flying for the last couple years. Allura made a point to make sure the paladins were well versed in every type of ship the Castle has in its arsenal just in case they needed them.
Flying again is thrilling.
Lance could cry at the beauty of it - of Earth from so high up, at the familiar blue sky speeding by, of the canyons he maneuvers through, of being in the pilot's seat once more. By the stars, he missed it so much more than he thought. It makes him long for Red and her sheer speed and fire.
As he runs through the drills he memorized long ago, he makes comments into the mic for Sam to take notes: loses too much speed in this maneuver, felt the drag in this turn, need to adjust reaction time on this control. Anything that would hinder them in a fight against a Galran ship, Lance makes a comment about it. Normally, he would have his partner in the air with him, one acting as the cat and the other as the mouse as they chased one another through the air.
Though he likes the spotlight he's been granted, Lance hopes the other pilots will be able to join him in the test flights soon. He can do all the drills he wants, but without someone on his tail he'll never know what the ship's weak spots are.
Upon his return to the ground, Sam instructs Lance to give a report of his feedback so those watching can understand what will be expected of them when they get their chance to fly. He says it will also help them grasp just how much they need to improve. These ships he's designed are already far more advanced than Earth's top ships, yet there's so much that needs to be improved if they want to stand a chance against the Galra.
Lance gladly offers his comments to the group, reveling in the way their glares have turned to astonishment. He knows he doesn't fly in any way they were trained at the Garrison and that he pulled off the type of stunts only expected of someone as advanced as Shiro or as naturally talented as Keith.
He thinks, he hopes, that maybe now his peers won't keep him so much at arm's length now that they see what he's capable of. Maybe now he can finally begin building relationships with them so that when his alien allies arrive, it will be easier to warm the humans up to them.

Remember that one time in Fence Rise where Nicholas basically confessed his eternal devotion to Seiji in front of the whole team? Because I do.
