please don't forget valar dohaeris
please don’t forget valar dohaeris
i beg of you
do not.
i know that got uses “valar morghulis” on everything that they touch because it’s a snazzy catchphrase and “all men must die” is badass and reflects their nihilistic mores as a show, but please, please please don’t forget that for every “all men must die” the response is “all men must serve”
please don’t forget that as arya is developing her kill list—a cry for justice, a cry for control—she is forced to serve.  she is a prisoner of war and has to serve as a cupbearer.  please don’t forget that her kill list is not just seeking vengeance, it’s seeking to protect those who might be harmed by those who have already done harm.
please do not forget that after she first hears the phrase “valar morghulis,” arya still doesn’t know what it means.  she doesn’t know that “all men must die” and even when faced with prisoners of war who served in her brother’s army who have done horrible things, she wishes that they receive merciful and just treatment, not just the torturous slow death to which they have been condemned.
even when she is serving in the house of black and white (serving, serving, serving), she explores the city as cat of the canals, providing food to the commons of the city, she begs as blind beth with the lowest of the braavosi, she is kind to whores who are kind to her, not caring about what they are so much as who they are.
in short, arya’s story is about justice, not about vengeance.  it is about living up to the ideals that her father instilled her with—that idea that when you kill a man you must look him in the eye, that a lord’s duty is to protect his people and to serve them not just to profit from them.
arya’s storyline is not a dichotomy of valar-morghulis-valar-dohaeris.  it’s not even a competition between the two.  valar dohaeris underlies every instance of valar morhulis that exists within the text.  valar dohaeris existed first, and valar dohaeris will survive valar morghulis for valar dohaeris is a response to the phrase “all men must die.”  all men must die ("die"—not "be killed") as they are mortal.  all men must serve their fellow man for they are human.

This belongs to Arya of House Stark. All these things belong to her. There is no place for them here.  There is no place for her.  Hers is too proud a name, and we have no room for pride. We are servants here.

Today is Copernicus’s 541th birthday. You may remember Copernicus as the man who said “Hey, what if the Earth went around the sun?” To which the Catholic Church replied “Hey, what if we set you on fire?”
