Lost Languages Discovered in One of the Worldās Oldest Continuously Run Libraries
Saint Catherineās Monastery, a sacred Christian site nestled in the shadow of Mount Sinai, is home to one of the worldās oldest continuously used libraries. Thousands of manuscripts and books are kept thereāsome of which contain hidden treasures.
Now, as Jeff Farrell reports for the Independent, a team of researchers is using new technology to uncover texts that were erased and written over by the monks who lived and worked at the monastery. Many of these original texts were written in languages well known to researchersāLatin, Greek, Arabicābut others were inscribed in long-lost languages that are rarely seen in the historical record.
Manuscripts with multiple layers of writing are known as palimpsests, and there are about 130 of them at St. Catherineās Monastery, according to the website of the Early Manuscript Electronic Library, which has been leading the initiative to uncover the original texts. Read more.

Quote
I saw a life with him. I saw coffee dates and camping trips. I saw us holding hands on winter mornings. I saw goodbye hugs and welcome back kisses. I saw him meeting my parents, meeting my friends, seeing where I grew up and who I grew up with. I saw friday night movie marathons and sunday morning cookie baking. I saw a house with a backyard and puppies, all with him. I saw every sappy thing with him that I always tried convincing everyone I didnāt care for. I saw a future in him. And it isnāt just the death of a relationship that I have to mourn, its the future I saw with him. Iām mourning the death of a love I thought would last a lifetime, but I am mourning the memories we never got to build on too.
