Hard to beat Orkney for old stuff. And the Broch of Gurness is a fine example. It’s an Iron Age (meaning “only” two thousand years old) round tower house. Extra cool because you can see all the dwellings that grew up around it, giving you the sense of village life in Orkney at the time. In the background is the island of Rousay which has more Brochs along the shore and a bunch of tombs you can crawl into as well. Orkney is rich in these sorts of dwellings because there were so few trees, hence everyday people were forced to build with stone. @natgeo @natgeocreative @nessofbrodgar #scotland #orkney #ironage #history #ancient https://ift.tt/2yZWU9Y
