Kevin?
Elroy thought to himself in shock. They hadnât crossed paths often but when they were they had been polite enough. He, unlike most of the other Elders, had never grown to be close enough to his own mission companion. There was always that barrier between them. It was for each otherâs safety. His future depending on making a fresh start.
âBreatheâ he told himself.
âIf you can get past Elder Price, the self proclaimed perfect Mormon, you can survive anything.â A word of advice to himself, hoping itâd calm him down just a little.
âWell, weâre going to need to look into housing provisions in case we canât all stay in the mission hut for one reason or another. Hopefully the two of you can find something that can fit all of us thatâs still in the village. How does that sound?â McKinley chirped, eyeing the two elders for a reaction.
He was very stressed but doing the best to cope with it. The boys needed a leader and he was their leader still. He could not afford to have a hang up, but if he had to straighten things out, he would.Â
The former District Nine of the LSD Church was now on it's own. Fallen from grace and persevering through willpower, the Elders were a different set of busy than what they had been used to. They were gathered around, waiting for Elder McKinley to give them their daily chores. "Alright, Elders, let's get to the point. We need to get this place up and running before the supplies from the Church run out. We're doing good for now, but I want to be prepared before then." (a mission in uganda)

â
THE COFFEE IN HIS HAND WAS WARM, BUT NOT NEARLY AS HOT AS STUPID AFRICA.Â
Standing there under the sun, Kevin wondered if they would ever manage to get the place âUP and RUNNINGâ to the point of putting UP a RUNNING Air Conditioner. He was as tired as he was exasperated, and a positive outlook seemed OUT OF HIS REACH when his BEST FRIEND wasnât even there. Taking a sip of his drink, he listened to Elder McKinley ( were they still even considered âEldersâ ? ) halfheartedly, pressing his lips together as he waited for his assignment.Â
He would play his part in helping make Uganda a better placeâ
But he sure as HELL wasnât doing it before he finished his cup of coffee.Â

Had he been to obvious? Elroy thought to himself disdainfully. Heâd been trying to be subtle but then again nothing really got past Elder McKinley. No, he was too sharp witted for that.
âOh, well, I was thinking, none of us are really free from sin.â Elroy started, scrambling for a way to mask at least part of himself. This sin of his.
âIâve been thinking...about things. Old...things. Back home.â
The other Elders were minding their own business, but Elroy knew better. People always listen, people always talk.
âElder McKinley, could we talk in private?âÂ
Elder Church reluctantly stood in the living room/dining room hybrid, watching the other Elders do their chores. There was a surrealness to it, how calm and 'normal' they all were. Elroy found himself feeling more like an outsider with every passing day he spent here. None of them probably carried the same weight and guilt of his past, how could he ever have thought he'd fit in?
Connor noticed when one of the others seemed off, or if the were acting strangely. Usually, something was bothering them, or thwy were feeling left out or our of place. Therefore it was his job to step in and see what was up. This situation was no different from that. He took note of hoe Elder Church tended to stand away from the group, so he decided he needed to check in with him. âGood morning.â

âElder Cunningham is busy doing work with the Villagers this week and Elder Davis is sick. Luckily, this means we still have an even number of Elders to pair up.â Elder McKinley glanced around the room, quickly giving it some thought.Â
âElder Price, youâll be working with Elder Church for the time being.â He announced. It was a deliberate move. He knew Elder Church had decent upper body strength, and Kevin could reach things Church could not.Â
There was another reason to that, one on a more personal level.
âNow everyone, here are your assignments for today. Elder Thomas and I will be making phone calls and writing letters to contacts we know who might be able to help with funding. Elder Zelder and Elder Michaels will go into town to see what they can find out from the Officials to see what resources we could possibly utilize.Â
Elder Neeley and Elder Schrader will be looking into what food and supplies we have available so we know how to manage it.
Elder Price? Youâre going to be paired up with Elder Church for the time being. I hope that isnât going to be a problem?â He asked, not really asking but rather telling.

âIâm sure I can handle this much, Connor. Itâs my job to help you get yours done.â Even if it wasnât, he certainly wasnât about to let his Mission Companion be swamped with even more work.Â
âElder Michaels, Elder Zelder, if I may speak to you both?â Elder Thomas asked with his big bright eyes. He knew his small size and youthful face could undermine his efforts to be taken seriously. He had his methods to this, however.
Elder Zelders looked up from what he was doing previously.
âOf course, Elder Thomas. What can we do for you?â Elder Zelder pushed his glasses back where they belonged. In the Ugandan heat they had a tendency to slide down from the sweat now and again.
âElder McKinley and I will be going out to town to buy supplies to fix things around the mission hut. Iâm asking the two of you if you happen to have a list of what we need? Also has Elder Michaels fixed the sink yet, Elder Zelder?â Mathias inquired in his most âprofessionalâ yet friendly voice.Â
âGregâs fixing the sink as we speak, or heâs trying to. I can think of at least 3 things off the top of my head. Schrader and Neeley probably have an idea as well.âÂ
âIâd like to have a list to give to Elder McKinley before noon. I donât believe it should take that long, should it?âÂ
âNot at all, Elder Thomas.â
The shortest of all the Elders knocked on the door to Elder McKinleyâs office, list in hand.Â
âIâve done what youâve asked for, Connor. Itâs here, the whole list. Michaels has partially fixed the sink. Itâs not leaking as much this time.âÂ
Elder Thomas knew the routine Elder McKinley liked to keep the rest of the mission hut to. How could he not? All things considered, Elder Thomas prided himself on being his companion, a role he sought to uphold with dignity. "Good Morning, Elder McKinley. It's a new day, after all." (a-mission-in-uganda)
âA new day of the same old thing,â he pointed out with a huff. Elder McKinley always made sure he was the first missionary up and the first one to be ready. It was his duty as district leader to be there for his mission brothers after all. But the early mornings were beginning to take their toll as he tried his best to rub the bags beneath his eyes away. âNever mind, good morning to you too,â he turned from where he stood by his dresser, at this point he was already dressed. âAnything you need to get done today?â

Elder Church figured thatâs what Elder McKinley would have said-was he really going to expect him to say otherwise? It would certainly go against the belief wouldnât it?
He felt silly for asking.
âThereâs got to be a line drawn somewhere, right? Like- like people who steal or cheat...or are alcoholics.â He added in that last line tentatively. He could have said âpeople who beat their wivesâ but decided Elder McKinley might get too concerned about him.
And if he dug too deep heâd find out how horrible one of the Elders under his care really was and Elder Church wasnât ready to be outcast yet again. Not here where he had no where to go. Not now when he was trying so hard to turn over a new leaf.Â
Elder Church reluctantly stood in the living room/dining room hybrid, watching the other Elders do their chores. There was a surrealness to it, how calm and 'normal' they all were. âYouâre a very stressed man, Connor.â Mathias reminded him. âItâs not unusual for people to forget. On top of your paperwork, youâve already much to do.â Poptarts wouldnât want to take his place and deal with it all, but he should at least share the pain. He was supposed to be his companion, there to help him in his neediest times. And if those times were all the time, then so be it.
Heâd made the commitment and he was here to see it through.
âOf course, Elder McKinley. Iâd do anything for you.â Mathiasâs voice dropped, changing tone from one of professionalism to one of informality.
âI mean anything, Connor. Whether it be work or ..or something personal. I want to help you.â He meant it sincerely, with every fiber of his being.Â
âNothingâs too much for me, Iâll have it ready for you by noon.âÂ

Elroy kept that smile plastered on his face, small signs of the facade beginning the crack. It was almost sickeningly sweet how Elder McKinely was treating him.
If only they knew what he was really like. Who he used to be.
Who you still are. Came a thought in the back of his mind.
âElder Mckinley, can I ask you a question?â Elroy proposed, looking around. Hopefully no one would find his question suspicious.
âDo you really think anyone can change? No matter how bad they were?â

"I hope I'm fitting in alright, Elder McKinley" Elroy smiled widely. There was something lacking in that smile, a genuineness. It was still a smile. Nonthreatening. Normal. "Upset?" Elroy's voice jumped higher than he'd hoped. Quickly fighting to regain his composure he once again donned that Good Mormon boy (tm) persona. "It's just...very different, here in Uganda." That it was. Yet he felt not as out of place here as he'd thought he would. He hadn't had much growing up and certainly not the best of things. He supposed he could be accostumed to these sorts of living conditions.

"Elder Mckinley, good mormon- I mean good Morning." Elder Church quickly answered, attempting to at least look the part of a good mormon boy. "I apologize for slacking off while the other Elders are just so very busy, it's very lively here." He said, trying his best to keep himself coherent. He had to fit in, this was supposed to be his new start, right?

âJust the usual mormon duties, my District Leader.â Elder Thomas responded, a pleasant smile crossing his face.Â
âThe real question, if you need me to do anything for you. After all, I know youâve got much on your plate.â Mathias chirped cheerfully. He took great pride in helping Elder McKinley any way he could. It showed that he was special, that his duties were different from the others. He was more than capable of stepping up to the duties and responsibilities that came, as a by product of his companionâs role.Â
Not everyone could say that they were partners with the district leader.
âI know that weâve still got a few things to fix around the mission hut from the past week. Elder Zelder still hasnât fixed that one pipe in the bathroom sink and Elder Michaels insists he can still fix it.â He began, rattling off the list of things that still needed to be done aside from their usual duties as mormons.Â
Elder Thomas knew the routine Elder McKinley liked to keep the rest of the mission hut to. How could he not?
