It’s been five years. Still no news on the whereabouts of His Supreme Idiocy, who’s either dead, stranded, kidnapped, or doesn’t have enough of a brain to let her know that he’s okay.

I love this, it’s so well written and heart-wrenching. The characterization is spot on too, and the way they write the Astrid/Eret dynamic is delightful. So painful for Astrid to go through, but beautifully written.

[REC] Impressions
Jane Austen AU: Her wit exhilarates him. His lack of propriety astonishes her. All that stands between them is a ballroom, a proposal, and their pride.
Link: FFN Writer: CuriosityRedux Genre: Regency AU / Jane Austen AU / Historical AU Language: English Status: Finished Type: Multi-Chapter Characters: Hiccup, Astrid Relationships: Hiccstrid Warnings: N/A Review:
I am in love with this fic. The way the author writes is absolutely beautiful, and their characterization is phenomenal. The narrative captures the regency era so beautifully that it could almost have been written in the era itself. And they’ve done an absolutely spectacular job adapting the characters to such a vastly different setting to their original one. How the author has managed to keep such a strong characterization all the while having both Astrid and Hiccup so flawlessly fit in with Victorian social standards is incredible and perfectly done. I honestly wish this fic was longer than three chapters so that I could enjoy the beautiful narrative and spectacular dialogue for at least a little longer.

[REC] Something Between
Fishlegs wasn’t sure when things had changed. Was it after the whole Thor Bonecrusher debacle, which he still only remembered vaguely? Was it after he’d asked for Snotlout’s help to handle the beast on Dark Deep? Or was it a combination of everything, of spending so many long days and weeks on Dragon’s Edge with only Snotlout for company?
Link: AO3 Writer: @piratespencil Genre: Dragon Rider AU, Romance Language: English Status: In Progress Type: Multi-Chapter Characters: Fishlegs, Snotlout Relationships: Fishlout Warnings: N/A Review:
aaskjaljlks these two are so precious. I wish I could leave a kudos on every chapter. More than one kudos on every chapter.
The portrayals of both Snotlout and Fishlegs are absolute perfection, and I cannot wait to see more of these two in the future. I’m really looking forward to reading more of this story.
Also, I really like their writing style. The dialogue is fantastic and the narrative voice is wonderfully witty with the perfect ratio of sweetness and humour.
This fic is canon now, and I’m not listening to anyone who says otherwise.

Somehow, Toothless convinces him to give them jobs on the train to protect them from the authorities and keep an eye on them. With their varied pasts all seeming to come together at the same time, Hiccup now has to deal with a quest for a lost lover, a criminal and folk legend on the run from mobs, a demon bear, and his own family issues, in addition to the business and Toothless. What could possibly happen next that doesn’t make it worse?

[REC] Feet Firmly Planted
“When you fall in, I’m not fishing you out,” she says, and she means it. She’ll let him drown, for a laugh.
Jack has always been able to fill any room, any person, with air. Just one of many annoying habits that got under her skin.
[College!au. Hic has asked Rapunzel out to a school party. Left out, Jack asks Merida out to an anti-party, where they blow off the festivities in favor of hanging around like bums.]
Link: AO3 Writer: killFee Genre: Modern AU, College/University AU Language: English Status: Finished Type: Oneshot Characters: Jack, Merida, Hiccup, Rapunzel Relationships: Jarida, background Hiccunzel and implied Merricup Warnings: N/A Review:
This is the fic that officially pulled me into the fandom lol. Merida and Jack’s voices are PERFECT, and i really admire the author’s command of their words. They use some of the most wonderful prose i’ve ever seen in any rotbtd fic; i keep coming back to this story just to read how they describe the kids.
The story plunges you right into the middle of an ongoing scene, and for an AU oneshot, it does a good job of balancing some nods to the canon while also leaving blanks that the readers are free to fill; like how the four characters come together and what Jack’s memory troubles could mean.
The jarida is in more of a pre-relationship stage here, and the other ships mentioned stay in the background. The fic mostly focuses on their friendly dynamics, and it’s adorable! Even if the ship or setting isn’t your cup of tea, the believable friendship still makes this worth the read.
Easily one of my favorite rotbtd fic!!!

[REC] The Coming of Thieves
The fall of the Red Death and the taming of Berk’s dragons seems to have spread ripples across the Northern Sea; ones that Hiccup and the other Vikings most certainly could not have anticipated. Now that winter is over, the warriors of Berk must decide how they—and their dragons—stand in a world of raiders, traders, and conquering kings.
At the same time, in the Highlands, the stories of the Bear Queen of Dun Broch and her fearless daughter have drawn unwanted eyes. Heeding the warnings of the will-o’-the-wisps, Elinor sends Merida north, to her mother’s people, for her own safety. Meanwhile, Merida is having dreams—not of bears or wisps, but of a woman who claims she is magic-touched.
As stories intertwine, an old enemy of both dragons and men emerges, and it’s clear that Highlanders and Berk’s dragonriders must work together to fight against it—or neither may survive.
Link: AO3 Writer: shuofthewind Genre: Historical Fantasy, War Language: English Status: In Progress Type: Multi-Chapter Characters: Merida, Hiccup Relationships: Merida/Hiccup Warnings: author warns of graphic violence, additional warnings as req’d Review:
First of all, I absolutely adore the way they write. The prose flows so beautifully, and keeps a perfect pace. It doesn’t lag or rush - it’s perfect. And the portrayals of all the characters so far are sooooooo good, oh my gosh. Especially the complicated relationship between Astrid and Hiccup - they feel so genuine and actually themselves.
I’m so excited by this story - the worldbuilding is phenomenal, and I’m thrilled by the amount of research the writer has evidently already put into this story. I’m super excited to learn more about their world, as well as to see the characters’ relationships as they develop.
I also love the way they write the bond between Hiccup and Toothless, with Hiccup almost arguing with himself based on Toothless’ body language. I don’t think I’ve seen it done like that before, and I love it.
The way they combine historical accuracy with the lore of this universe has been a delight thus far, and I am super excited to learn more about the way things work in this universe as the story progresses. Can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

[REC] In a Year or Two
“We’re pretty close. Another year or two at the most then we’ll be signing marriage contracts.”
Snotlout wakes Fishlegs one night to have a serious conversation about a past event that has been constantly on both of their minds.
Link: AO3 Writer: MysteriousSunshine Genre: Dragon Riders AU, Romance Language: English Status: Finished Type: Oneshot Characters: Snotlout, Fishlegs Relationships: Snotlout/Fishlegs Warnings: N/A Review:
Ahhhhhh, this story is so good! It’s such a cute piece, with great in-character dialogue and banter, but the ending leaves you on such a bittersweet note.
I really loved the dynamic between Fishlegs and Snotlout in this fic, I think the writer did a great job at capturing their individual voices and attitudes. Their night flight was so sweet and romantic, in spite of Snotlout’s abrasiveness. The writer did a great job at showing Snotlout’s softer side without sacrificing a single aspect of what makes him Snotlout. Really well done!

[REC] Crossing the Horizon
They were pieces on different gaming boards-a queen who refused to play and a knight who played by his own rules. But, succession is never easy, especially when allies are more dangerous than enemies and enemies gather like crows. More than dragons or steel, Merida asks a dangerous request: Hiccup, tell me about the legend in your tribe of the boy and the dragon with one tailfin.
Link: AO3  FFN Writer: Nessalk @moonshotsandarchimedeslevers Genre: Brave & HTTYD Shared Universe Language: English Status: In Progress [Hiatus?] Type: Multi-Chapter Characters: Merida, Hiccup, Astrid, Stoick, Young Lords Relationships: Merida/Hiccup Warnings: N/A Review:
This was so wonderful! I absolutely adore the author’s writing style, the story flows so smoothly and they have such a great balance of dialogue to description. It’s an absolute pleasure to read.
Also the worldbuilding is so good. I love the world they established for this story, with the two societies both on the cusp of war and a massive social shift. And seeing how they fit so poorly in their respective world’s.
I also really love that they presented a number of different political factions. Like, the inclusion of other clans ruled by Clan DunBroch, and the Romans, as well as the inclusion of the other Viking tribes.
And the characterization is just a treat. It’s so spot-on for every character in every chapter, and the way they write everyone in this universe is simply beautiful. How they’ve expanded on the young Lords’ personalities is wonderful, and fits them perfectly. And I love the side of Merida you get to see with her as the narrator. Also, I usually never say this but I loved the OCs they introduced to fill out Merida’s and Hiccup’s worlds, they were really well done, and it was lovely to learn more about them.
And the pacing was really great too - the set-up was really good. Some writers rush into getting Hiccup and Merida together, and thankfully this writer did not. They took their time fleshing out the characters and their world’s before they brought them together, and set the stage beautifully for each action and reaction. And the relationships between characters develop in such an authentic, natural way, it’s beautiful to read.
This is absolutely one of my favourite fics of all time, and I’m not sure if the author still intends to finish the story, but I hope they do someday. But even unfinished, it’s still one of the best Mericcup fics I’ve read to date.
