Hi! I recently started following your account and I love it! I know almost nothing about death witchcraft but I'm interested in learning, especially about spirit work/communication with the dead. I was wondering if you had some pointers/posts you could direct me to. I've done a bit of searching but it all seems overwhelming and there's a lot of terms that I don't understand. Thanks! (Sorry this is long).
I’m so glad you love it! That makes my day!
Here are a couple of my basic death witchcraft and spirit work 101 type posts:
Beginner Death Witchcraft
Unusual Death Witchcraft
A Spirit Work 101 Lesson
Communication with Ghosts
Energy Directives (calling specific spirits to you)
Also feel free to type in “death witchcraft” or “spirit work” into my tag search bar and you’ll find many other posts- my own and reblogs, that’ll be helpful! Don’t forget about protection and warding when you start interacting with spirits and ghosts! I wish you all the best!

Death Witch Rituals - My Basic List
Death witchcraft can be used and interpreted in many different ways. But what one does with it is often very personal, different, and unique. Here are some rituals, spells, etc. that I have done or am planning on doing that fit into my definition of Death Witchcraft.
Scrying with spirits - you may have seen my post about this a while ago, which I recommend reading if you’re interested. I touch lightly on human spirits their, but I do enjoy a session with human spirits, or even animals. I definitely ritualize scrying, though I am not sure why. It feels special to me, and always has…
Divining the future with the dead - similar to the last ritual, I divine with the dead to try and get answers, predictions, etc from them. I have a post on that too, which I wrote more recently. I really like to do this, as it gives both the spirit involved and me a hand in helping others, or even ourselves.
Grief spells and rituals - grief can be heart wrenching, lead to depression, and extreme bouts of loneliness. With consent, I sometimes do these rituals and spells to help loved ones feel more at peace. I wrote a funeral bouquet post about what I would send if asked to, and why each flower was a potent piece of healing. This is a minor form of these types of rituals.
Passing spells and rituals - helping spirits pass on, or get “unstuck” when reliving their past is a very rewarding thing. I like these because it prevents pain and suffering from life crossing over into death. Another aspect of the funeral bouquet post is for this, too.
Curses - death does not always mean bringing mortality to a living, breathing thing. I use it to smother success, disenchant happiness, etc. It seems cold, but I rarely use this in curses anymore. I have no need, at least not recently. My past curses have served me well, and my emotional response to evil people has matured.
Rebirth spells and rituals - I know the power of death, and of the rebirthing process that follows it. I am going to conduct a formal ritual regarding this and my recent recovery from depression. I want a moment of reflection where I can release the past entirely.
Communing with the dead - meditation can lead to eye opening encounters with the spirits of those who died before you. They have voices, and they will speak, even if you will not listen.
Cleaning up, respecting the dead - burying bones or carcasses of animals is one way to respect and honour the dead (if they want you to, that is). So is picking up litter near a cemetery, or helping the grief stricken friends and family of someone you know who has passed. Learn what to say, and what not to, and read up on death, and its overwhelming history.

I’ve been dabbling in the other end of Gaia’s natural power. Death is just as important and normal as life and should be respected as much. As someone dealing with my own darkness, death magic allows me to not be so afraid and to respect the unknown.
💀Unusual Death Witchcraft💀
Visiting natural history and art museum. Not only for the spirit work (museums are surprisingly rife with spirits) but also the reflection on the objects themselves that are imbued with death energy due to their age.
Kitchen witchcraft with fermentation. I’m talking both home starters/yeasts and drink based fermenting! The process of encouraging fermentation is literally a controlled necromancy if you think about it! Also your own fermented product will be excellent to use in spellwork!
Upcycle crafting! The process of reusing items in a new way that you already had or seeking out items to use instead of letting them become trash is also working with death energy!
Playing death related games or watching movies with friends and family. Death witchcraft tasks and energy work doesn’t have to look witchy! If you have a weekly or monthly hangout where you play tabletops like Betrayal at House on the Hill or even online games. Or watch documentaries or movies with loved ones that related that totally counts! Especially as a lower spoon option.
Drawing or photographing abandoned buildings/architecture. So often people forgot that the decay of manmade objects and places do hold death energy and weight. Tapping into this side of death witchcraft can be an interesting experience.
Visiting a 24 hour store or restaurant in the middle of the night. This is a personal experience of mine but that quiet low level liminal space energy is such a similar transitional energy as to help you grow your experience and sensing of death energy. Also walking through a store at 3am is a good time to practice a walking meditation or some simple spirit communication without too much trouble. Just have your headphones in for an excuse!
Learning to maintain your own compost! I’m hopeless with the green thumb side of things myself but I still have composting I do for my yard in general. My wildflowers and natural growth is lovely because of it! The cycle of your kitchen supplies life and decay is such a simple and deep way to access that death energy and maybe even work your way up to having that green thumb! Also using this compost in spellwork will pack a punch!
What are some unusual ways you experience death witchcraft and energy?

basic ass witch tips 🔮
on some kind of medication, including but not limited to hormonal birth control, heart medication, and anti-depressants? you better double check with your doctor before you drink that new tea you just bought.
always, always, always tell your doctor before trying any kind of herbal supplement, whether it’s something you made yourself or something you bought at the store.
have sensitive skin? dilute your essential oils before putting them anywhere near your skin or in your bathtub.
have a diagnosed medical condition? talk. to. your. doctor. before ingesting anything or putting anything on your body that you aren’t familiar with.
don’t. drink. essential. oils. essential oils are not consumable!!!!!
don’t put citrus oil on your skin and then go out into the sun unless you want a badass chemical burn.
don’t put any kind of damn essential oil on your skin without diluting it with a carrier oil. almond oil? olive oil? coconut oil? i don’t care. dilute your essential oils.
don’t put essential oils on your animals, diluted or not, point blank.
oh, and don’t put fucking crystals in their water bowls to “cleanse their chakras” or whatever the fuck.
speaking? of crystals? don’t put crystals in your bodily orifices. don’t put crystals in your own damn water. just don’t.
thinking about burning some kind of random herb in your house? you better make sure it’s not gonna release noxious fumes and murder your family.
speaking of random herbs - got the urge to forage for some herbs out in the wild? wear. fucking. gloves.
don’t burn incense or herbs around your pets. they have tiny, fragile respiratory systems and are super sensitive to that kinda shit.
gotta burn a candle down completely for a spell? you better not leave that shit unattended unless you want a house fire.
always. practice. fire. safety. that means, don’t go burning shit outside during a burn ban.
gods help me - if you wanna harvest your own blood via finger stick, stay away from dirty safety pins and needles and invest in some lancets.
drinking dirty water from outside can literally give you worms. boil your damn water.
oh yeah. moon water. everyone loves to make moon water. you know what happens when you leave a jar of water at room temperature? it grows bacteria. refrigerate that shit.
fresh herbs or other things of that nature left at room temperature can also grow super harmful bacteria, for example, raw garlic at room temperature is a breeding ground for botulism and mold.

About Abolone Shells
Strange thing happened a few nights ago and I’m only getting around to putting it on here now. I’ll keep it short and sweet because I could honestly write an essay on how wild this dream was and how much emotion was involved.
The other night Gaia came to me in a dream. It sounds crazy, but she did. Never have I ever had an experience of being contacted directly by a deity and honestly, I am so humbled to have been.
Anyway, in my dream she was crying. I couldn’t figure out why she was so upset and I just kind of observed as she literally was wailing hysterically. Then, although I never asked her what was causing so much pain, I just got this overwhelming feeling that she wanted me to tell people to stop using Abolone Shells. She made me feel the agony of the shell being ripped from the Abolone Snail and how hypocritical it was to do Earth Worship and purchase Abolone Shells from a store that mass produces them. It was just a wild rush of all these emotions and how she told me to tell as many people as I could to stop hurting her children.
Now, I don’t know many people who use Abolone Shells. I don’t even use them out of preference, but I have purchased them in the past as gifts. I can’t possibly think of one good reason why Gaia would give me this message, especially because I am so unfamiliar with the Abolone. So I guess I am going to use my very teeny tiny platform here on Tumblr to just tell people what Gaia told me.
To be fair, I am 100% positive that there is a religious practice somewhere out there that uses Abolone Shells very seriously(ex: smudging). My personal practices will never be the same as someone else’s, so you just keep doing your thing if Abolone is a requirement for your practice. I am only putting this on here because Gaia really wants me to tell the world. So please, unless Abolone Shells are a staple in your practice, please find an alternative... maybe... for Gaia...?
(Also wanted to add that certain species of Abolone are endangered. Here’s a link with more info: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/expeditions/southern-california-and-endangered-abalone-populations/ )

I am happy to present my own Wamily’s version of finding your signifier card using a Tarot deck.  (Wamily, just in case you don’t know, is a witch family.)
Please keep in mind that this is a practice passed down and developed by a handful of witches related to me, and isn’t the process that every cartomancer uses.  I hope this helps you on your witchcraft journey!
My own signifier card was found when I was a wee little witch.  I chose the Chariot (which, if you know me personally, is Salt through and through.)  My strengths and limitations are very much found in this card and I am drawn to its imagery indefinitely.
Comment with your signifier card once you find it!  I am excited to see what you receive.

Respecting the Gods
Don’t… treat them as tools. Deities aren’t obligated to help you, even if you do everything “correctly” to ask. They’re not vending machines, or a list of correspondences that only gets value from how they best serve you. They’re gods! Instead… treat them like people. (Really high-status people.) Build a relationship before asking big favors. Compensate them for their time. Respect they have their own autonomy. Respect that your will is not the center of their universe.
Don’t… reduce them into archetypes. Putting Frejya or Aphrodite into just “love goddess” takes out so much of their depth. (Example, both of these goddesses also have warlike aspects.) Putting them into narrow categories and treating all deities that fit as the same can be reductive at best and insensitive to the root cultures at worst.  Instead… address who you’re really talking to. Do your research. See how a god either lines up with or defies your assumptions. See what makes them different from a deity with a similar domain. If you wish to speak to the Horned God, speak to the Horned God, and if you want to speak to Cernunnos or Pan, call them Cernunnos or Pan.  Don’t… ignore the lore. UPG Can certainly exist and add depth, but the lore has survived and is what all these gods are largely founded on. It’s important for us to recognize it and know who we’re approaching.  Instead… do your research beforehand. Did you know Aphrodite is widely considered to HATE pigs and be offended with offerings of pork or images of pigs on the altar? Might be a good thing to know before you accidentally offer some fresh bacon. (But if you recognize the lore and find a way to spin it so it works, more power to you~) Don’t… insult other people’s gods. If those gods don’t resonate with you, they have a lot of meaning for other good people. I’m tempted to say don’t insult your own, either. Playful banter is one thing, but there’s a line between affectionate jabs and straight up disrespect. Find where that line is for you. Instead… talk to other people. If something about a god you don’t worship feels problematic, talk to their followers and devotees and see what they have to say about it. They probably have an approach you haven’t been exposed to. Analyze your own relationships with deities. And if the way you speak about a deity makes someone else uncomfortable or upset, respect their right to feel that way, apologize, and learn from it. Remember that each deity has changed someone’s life for the better.

Ostara Oomancy
Oomancy, the art of egg divination, is a perfect activity for Ostara (the Spring Equinox) because of the strong association between the egg, the world, and new life.
You Will Need
Two bowls
Boiled (still hot) water
An egg
One white and one black candle (in safe holders)
Moon water (optional)
Preparation
If it is part of your practice, cast a circle. As you sit with your ingredients before you, centre yourself. Ground yourself in the present moment by focusing on your breath, the sensations of your body, and your connection to the earth.
Casting
Boil a pot of moon water and carefully pour it into one bowl.
Set the bowls between the the black and white candles (black on your left and white on your right). Place the egg between the bowls and yourself.
Light the black candle and say:
Sister moon, shine your wisdom on this reading.
Light the white candle and say:
Brother sun, infuse your energy in this reading.
Cup the egg in your hands and hold it over the empty bowl and recite the following:
Sister and brother in equal time
Guide this vision and make it mine.
Crack the egg and, using the shell and empty bowl, seperate the white from the yolk. Drop the white into the hot water and read the patterns it creates as you would tea leaves.
Notes
Egg: symbolises the world and rebirth
White and Black Candles: represent the equality of night and day on the Ostara.

Moon Magic
We are all well aware of the power and allure of the Moon. Every single one of us is attuned to it’s cycles. After all, in the most basic explanation- The moon controls the Earth’s tides and gravitational pull, and being that humans are roughly 70% water wouldn’t it make sense? Ultimately each lunar phase is powerful and emits its own frequency of energy and are suited to help one achieve a specific goal.
Waxing Moon (Crescent/Gibbous) Theses are the phases when the Moon appears to be growing, divided into the first and second quarter it lasts for about 14 days. The moon is becoming more and more illuminated, so this is a good time to focus on growth - such as bringing something new into your life or improving yourself somehow, for drawing things towards you. Good spells to do at this time include spells for motivation or dedication, fertility, making new habits, and improving relationships or communication.
New Moon This is when the Moon is just a sliver in the sky, nearly invisible to the naked eye. From this point it would take the Moon nearly 14 days to reach full (first quarter). Now that the moon is hidden from the earth, this is a good time to do work related to secrecy and “invisibility”. Since the new moon is followed by the moon becoming more visible, this is also a good time to “plant seeds” of a spell that you want to grow in power over time. Good spells to do at this time would be spells for keeping something hidden, privacy, protecting objects from prying eyes, as well as spells of reinvention, starting new, and growth.
Full Moon The full Moon is considered the most powerful, due to it shining at it’s full brightness. This is often times commemorated with a ritual, or Esbat.  Ultimately being the predominantly used lunar phase for spell work. This is a good time to reflect and focus on illuminating areas of your life. It’s time to reap the rewards of your growth over the last month and find understanding within yourself to work further towards prosperity and success. Good spells to work on at this time include, but are not limited to spells for understanding, prosperity, success, magical powers, cleansing and protecting.
Waning Moon (Crescent/Gibbous) This is when the Moon seems to be disappearing, being divided into the third and fourth quarters, including the Dark Moon. Taking about 14 days to complete its cycle. The Moon is becoming less visible, making it a perfect time to “shrink” or push out other areas of your life. This is good for shrinking other people’s power over you, breaking spells or curses, breaking bad habits, and protection and healing, banishing, and cleansing.
Blue Moon When there are two full moons in one month, the second full moon is referred to as a blue moon. Considered the more powerful of the two, the blue moon is thought to be a time of extra luck and magic. Occurring approximately once every two and a half years, this rare occasion is a wonderful time to meditate on your goals and accomplishments. A perfect time for spells of luck, abundance, and prosperity.
Lunar Eclipse This rare event occurs when the Earth is in direct alignment between the sun and the moon and passes into the Earth’s shadow. A lunar eclipse can be total, meaning that the moon is in front of the Earth and completely blocks the sun or partial, where the moon is further away than the Earth and casts a solar ring around it. This is a time of change and transformation.
Esbats
Esbats are the celebration of the 13 Full Moons within a year. Sometimes there are more within a year, due to Blue Moons. These Esbats being:
The Wolf Moon. A time for heightened awareness. It is the first full moon of the year. Representing determination and focused energy, it is a good time to charge crystals.
Snow Moon. A time of Protection and cherishing what you hold sacred.
Crow Moon (or Worm Moon). Time for new inspirational ideas, energy, invigoration, and excitement. It’s time to purge what no longer serves and focus on new beginnings.
Pink Moon. A time of motivation, being hopeful, positive, and optimistic.
Flower Moon. It’s time to find your flow and work with lighthearted ease. Perfect for refreshing.
Strawberry Moon. A time of mindfulness and appreciating what you have.
Thunder Moon. A time of increased creativity and intensified emotions.
Sturgeon Moon. Time to ignite your inner flame. For being passionate and wild.
Full Corn Moon (or Harvest Moon). A time for preparation and Tying up loose ends.
Harvest Moon (or Hunters Moon). A time of Magic. To be restful, peaceful.
Beaver Moon. This time is Soothing and peaceful. Meant for relaxation and reflection. To release impurities.
Cold Moon. A time of sincerity and honesty. To see clearly what you want/who you want to be.
