I’m learning my third language right now and the more I work on it, the more I’m glad that English is my native tongue because oh my god how does anyone learn the rules of this miserable cobbled-together nonsense that constantly has exceptions to its own rules and then exceptions to the exceptions
How has anyone learned to pronounce //a n y t h i n g// in English
All of you who learned English as a second language deserve an award and our apologies.

Mild-spoiler review: can confirm, though Dark Phoenix was not the most amazing X-Men film, it was far from the suckfest critics made out to be.
THE GOOD
* WAY better than Apocalypse. The story was lean and concise, not convoluted like XMA. It also didn’t rely on OOC moments from characters to get the story rolling. Every choice the characters made in DP made sense for them at that moment.
* The final action sequence on the train (actually all of the actual sequences) was off the hook amazing, much better than most MCU films. One thing I like about the X-Men films, is they always get really creative with their action sequences and cater them to the power sets the character have.
* We got a comic-accurate version of Charles Xavier (aka douchebag undertones galore). I like that the film was not afraid to go to dark places with him and gave him some layers, beyond him simply being a saintly father figure to Jean.
* Erik was finally not the bad guy!
* I was happy to see Hank and Raven finally happy together, even if the happiness didn’t last very long.
* Hank finally got something to do! He has a character arc! Huzzah!
* All of the X-Men were given a cool action sequence moment where they used their powers well - Nightcrawler’s, Beast’s, and Storm’s were especially good. Magneto had many great ones, as usual.
* I thought Sophie was going to be really bad and she wasn’t. James, Michael, and Nick were amazing, as always.
* Jean’s backstory was tragic and interesting, and we get a good twist later on in the movie that kind of put her on a bad path. It’s different from The Last Stand, and works better IMO.
* Storm looked incredible.
* If you’re a Cherik fan (which I am), you will get fed at the end of the film. Let the fanfiction begin!
THE BAD
* Villains were weak, even Jessica Chastain couldn’t breathe life into her character. The set up felt rushed, the aliens’ motivation was very broad strokes and impersonal. Maybe show us a flashback of what happened to them? Also, they didn’t fully explain the aliens’ power set or how they worked.
* They jumped into the Phoenix story right away - I think the Phoenix entered Jean five minutes into the movie. Ten years have passed, they should’ve given us some time to catch up with the gang, explain the new normal before they wrecked it.
* Some hand-waving when it came to plot points—for example) Why on Earth would the USA give international murderer and attempted President-killer, Erik Lehnsherr, and entire island to start a mutant colony? Also, Hank says the jet isn’t equipped to fly into space and Mystique is just like, ‘we’re doing this!’ And he shrugs and goes along with it? How were they able to breathe?
* Events do not make sense with the future timeline (but if you watch X-Men movies, it’s par for the course, I guess), particularly details about the school.
* Major gaff: Wasn’t Jean already the Phoenix in Apocalypse? Not sure why they’d have her display Phoenix powers in XMA and then pretend like it never happened. They must’ve known by the time they filmed Apocalypse which story they were shooting next?
* Scott was…meh. Like, the actor did why he could, but I’ve come to the conclusion Kinberg just does not know how to write Cyclops. Scott has zero personality.
* What was the purpose of setting this in the 90’s when they completely ignored the time period completely? It was so lazy! In the past X-Men films, they really had fun with the period details. We didn’t even get grunge rock soundtrack, old tech, or shitty haircuts, like in Captain Marvel.
* Where the FUCK was Peter? We got no mind-blowing Quicksilver action sequence. None. He was barely in the movie. So, yeah, the Dadneto scenes we expected never happened, despite them teasing it for two films. Erik still has no idea Peter is his son 😒
* They wrapped things up so quickly that we didn’t get the resolution with some things I wanted (like, Charles and Hank reconciling), but I’m guessing it’s because they did not expect this to be the final film in the series?

are we not going to talk about how different erik was? don’t get me wrong, it was the most beautiful character development i’ve ever seen. he was trying to do good for good reasons. he protected other mutants. he helped other mutants. he learned that killing will not bring peace (unless it was a threat like the phoenix but that’s extreme measure). he tried to save those solders’ lives. he tried to save everybody’s lives. he had a change of heart. just like charles slowly realized everything was not all good, erik understood everything was not bad either. it took them cuba, it took them paris, it took them the apocalypse, but they learned that together.
thank you for coming to my ted talk about erik being one of the greatest characters.
oh, just a friendly reminder, cherik is canon.
