”A Line, A Circle” Life is a circle. Although it may become beautifully interrupted, it will go on and become better with what you deem as flaws.

Jackson Pollock’s transformation from Benton’s student to most talented artist came to be because he was constantly seeking. He was either seeking a glass full of liquor, seeking the loves of his mother and after pushing her away he was still seeking his wife’s love. He spent his whole life seeking but never finding or accepting. Pollock is only an artist because his older brother, and the brother his parents loved the most, was an artist as well. Through competing with his brother, he found an outlet for all his inner demons which surprisingly retarded his artistic ability. In his sober years he was applauded for creating his best works. Benton was responsible for teaching Pollock how to make art, but it was not until Pollock began studying with Siqueiros that he began to develop his own personal style and find his own way.  Pollock is then introduced to symbolism through his hospitalization for his drinking habits. Although he began to drink again once released from the institution, he continued treatment out interest for Jung’s approach to symbolism. The combination of Siqueiros’ influence along with this exposure to symbolism truly helped mold and fine tune Pollock into a master of the arts. One can only wonder what would have stimulated the next evolution of his practice if his life had not been cut down so soon by his own actions.

Imitation is Flattery
The works of Jusepe de Ribera have been haunting captive audiences since the early 16oo’s. The work “Flaying of marsyas” created by a follower of Ribera has been in the possession of John Ringling since 1936. The piece on show brings forward all which Ribera is known for. Through his works he implemented a tenebrism style, eloquent usage of chiaroscuro, and an overall austere subject matter produced with realism.
Although Ribera painted a separate painting with similar subject matter to the painting on display at the Ringling museum, there are differences in how the Follower decided to portray his subject. The title of this piece, the “Flaying of Marsyas” does explain almost precisely what is seen. In the center of the painting a hoofed demon named Marsyas hangs in a position as if you were to turn a crucifix upside down. His arms fall out to his sides as his face turns to the left he cries out in agony. He cries out because Apollo stands over him to his right and is essentially skinning him alive. Marsyas is receiving this punishment because he challenged Apollo to test his musical ability. Apolo has an eerily serene look as he if he is merely butchering his dinner instead of doling out punishments. Apollo’s calm expression is enhanced as the deep red colored fabric of his clothing guides the viewers vision over his shoulder to two horrified faces looking over the scene unfolding in front of them. This original subject matter inspired by Titian who originally brought this story to life.
Walking through the Ringling museum galleries, I began to see how gay most of these paintings were. Most of these paintings seemed more in line with a Rococo style instead the great story telling presence that I feel baroque paintings should have. As unexplainably difficult this piece was to write about, I am glad it chose me. This painting chose me in a sense that it made me fully realize something about myself that I do need to delve into more. I have always been drawn to the darker side of life. Ribera’s gloomy subject matter does not depress me in the way I have read it does to other viewers. His work intrigues me; his use of dark against darker colors against colors so bright it is most likely bare canvas captivates my eye and illuminates his subject matter. The skin on his subjects'

sags to perfection and looks to have aged on the canvas. His style matches perfectly with his subject matter and he is an artist I have grown very fond of.

Color Scheme
To pick my own color scheme I would most likely go with black. It is a combination of colors and my life is a swirling vortex of everything and anything combining into a mass. A way that color has affected me in my life would be everytime we move. I have moved a lot growing up and the trend continued into adulthood. If you have ever rented a house you know what awaits you. A florida creme beige that 9 times out of 10 has a couple layers of nicotine seeping off of it. Putting up a fresh coat of paint really helps make the place feel like home and signifies a turning of leaves. Changes is here and change is good.

Virtual Sketchbook 1: Assignment #3.) a Written Self Portrait I am a white 26 year old female. I was born in RI and raised here in SWFL. A fun day for me is just getting out of the house and unplugging. A nice run, a trip to an aquarium, or a simple family meal are perfect little get aways for me. I love making my few friends laugh. I keep my circle small but I’d give a stranger the shirt off my back, as long as they were not rude or were not willing to help themselves.I have terrible road rage.

This painting hangs in our living room, just above a couch. It is a Red Fish painted on a map of Charlotte harbor , the medium used is water colors. I do not know the artist but I believe he is local. I think this is a beautiful piece because it simply reminds me of a time were I could go out when ever I wanted and drop a line. That isn’t the case anymore but to be able to visually stay in touch with an old hobby is nice.

Hello everyone ! A little known fact about me is in 6th grade I played soccer for the first time on a coed team. I knew literally nothing about the sport but my larger size and quick sprints gave my coach the great idea of putting me in as Mid-Defense. In the middle of the season , a boy decided to side tackle me and roll my right leg while it was locked in with his. I spent almost 8 months on crutches and 6 months in a wheel chair. About my piece: 1.) Dale Chihuly lives on a Boat house on Union lake in WA. 2.) Took two years to complete this piece; " Fiori Di Como 1998 3.)Chihuly is an American glass sculptor. 4.)Chihuly prefers glass as a medium because it acts like water in a sense that it plays with light and can distort views. 5.) Attended The University of Washington , receiving his B.A. in Interior Design in 1965 My view and feelings towards this piece did not entirely change upon research. I still feel over come with anxiety as I stare deeper into the sculptures mash up of beautiful yet oddly placed colors. I did not realize at first that this piece is made of glass. Now the only thing that has changed in my opinion is that the Belagio would be my first stop in Las Vegas. Being that it is glass, it would look completely different in person
