Ink illustration painted over digitally. Please don't repost or use for A!
2 Corinthian pillars represent Greek influences on the Victorian era.
Societal class divisions: Bottom left woman (unclothed) looks up at the woman in the middle of the drawing, while the other woman looks in her direction with judgment. The unclothed woman’s hair is left undone and she wears simple pieces of jewelry, wishing for the influence and wealth that the woman in the middle has. She wears jewelry to try and feel as if she’s capable of fitting into high society, but fails to follow simple etiquette, like wearing lamb skin gloves, as she cannot afford them.
The woman in the very top is a nod to NYC old money socialites like Caroline Astor, who championed tradition and etiquette in high society.
The snake represents the inherent flaws of Victorian Society and the gilded ages, where wealth was built off the suffering of the lower classes.
The jewelry the woman on the bottom right is wearing reference the theft of Indian jewels during and after the British colonization of India, as well as the cultural appropriation of Indian and other ethnic jewelry by European jewelry houses.
Clock behind woman at the very top represents the passage of time within history
Intricate detail -> how we often see the grandeur and beauty of certain fashions, historical trends and l time periods while ignoring how and why they were able to exist in the first place (unrealistic & toxic societal expectations, colonialism, imperialism, wealth disparity, racism, etc). Basically how beauty and grandiose often make people overlook and ignore the true historical context
Eyes hidden in patterns represent judgement and enforcement of societal expectations
