Manal has arrived safely in Cairo and is awaiting life-saving treatment! As of writing this, the Al Manasra family is $5,250 away from covering Manal's scheduled blood transfusion.

It was just announced that the first phase of the ceasefire is going to take effect on Sunday, January 19. That's three whole days in which Israel will go ballistic and intensify the already intense genocidal camping. I don't know what to think but can only pray and pray and pray.

every kind of system produces its own normalized violence and it produces the dissent to it as well. in egypt during the arab spring, the military carried out medical rape with forced 'virginity tests' on female protestors. this is what an autocratic military regime in a conservative country will lead to. when people decried the egyptian dictatorship, they were correct. when people condemned it, they were correct.

this happened when egyptians were chanting for the downfall of the regime. it was and continues to be an autocratic military regime, and it produced its own popular dissent that tried very hard to dismantle it. and when the people go up against an entrenched military power that received billions in foreign aid every year, this is what you end up with: a military that has institutionalized the rape of female protestors under violently misogynistic pretext through its contracted medical personnel. it is medieval but it is carried out with the slightest veneer of professional pretext that both allows the continued billions in aid to flow, and the understanding that this only happens to those who dissent and not those who toe the line.

nobody told the egyptian regime to investigate itself because it was understood that the system that created this cannot dismantle it, and after some token protestations from the international community in the end nobody held it accountable (actually, if i told you were the officer in charge then who oversaw this policy ended up you might laugh and cry with us.)
