Reflection
Overall I feel like this was a more complicated brief than the past as having to incorporate digital, analogue and urban methods. But at the end of this whole brief, I feel that both my final projects included those concepts in a balanced and cohesive project. The research I did was a lot more practical in part B as I felt that the only way I would be able to discover what materials and the methods I needed to get the right final outcome was testing and more testing. I found with my online research that the concept of crinkle concrete was very fresh and new, and it has not been done a lot. I feel happy with the way that I was able to merge photo montages with the plaster and create that extra dimension to a usual flat glossy piece of photography. My main love of experimental surfaces has been able to create different textures and inspire new environments. When I came across the idea of the crinkle concrete, it was exciting and diverse to a lot of the stuff I've done before. When reflecting I'm glad I tried different serval surfaces because it meant if I was ever to do it again, I would have enough knowledge on what works and what doesn't. Auckland is my urban environment, and that is also why I picked those photos to create a montage of also. My danger sign was inspired by the signs we see around Auckland. I'm pleased that I with this piece was also able to combine two different processes and create a cohesive piece of art which in large scale is very interesting and adds a further demotion to the usual street signs we see.
Overall I'm happy with how the work turned out. If I did this brief again, there are lots of other areas I would be interested in researching and experimenting with like collaging on a large scale and so on. I think studying into our urban environment has opened my eyes up into looking at environments differently and the way surfaces digital and analogue can be chased and made better or more enjoyable.

This is my last final mock up of an image. I would think these pieces of art and would be showcased in many different environments contrasting with their backgrounds and possible different environments. They are also interesting ways to display photomontages while adding texture and dimension which layering those on a project can make things look a lot more interesting

These are my final two image tiles which were created using plaster and adding the mixture in the bottom pushing the image in and then pouring more plaster on top which created these images which have a lot of texture and dimension. These relate to the urban environment with the graffiti side of the environment while also combining the idea of building and environment corroding due to natural elements.

This is my idea mocked up on an urban environment. I believe this concept would work on many different areas on an urban environment and also having different words but the textures give it a place of difference and would be best seen on large scale environments.

This is part of my final piece which is a danger sign using a texture to add dimension. This was inspired by different areas in an urban environment such as signs and so on

I decided from the plate that I made witj the metal and was able to peel it back from the plaster. I decided I was inspired by some different types of street sights so I have decided to make my final piece into a a danger sign. I took a photo and then created a stencil ad added blutac so that it wouldn’t lift when I sprayed

I felt like to future my research ill decided to use some spray paint and see the differnt effects I could get using the plaster and the metal I really like the way they blended in together and the different ways they looked

These are just a rough series of different textures which were made with the different equipment I was able to use and shows are great of different testing and results

This is the first piece which I created and this is all the different parts Of the photo montage and plaster idea. I really really am happy with how the two pictures came Out as they have kept the mould which I wanted while also incorporating the digital part to this brief and also relates to the urban environment of graffiti and the journey which surfaces in general go though in the outside elements.
Also the coulouring from the ink on the plaster looks interesting and the differnt way it lifted .

Next I mixed the plaster again and decided I was going to make two seperate pieces one which was going tobe milder by the tin foil to mim if a crinkled texture with no holes so I could pull it out and be able to peel it back probbaly.
The next idea was layering glossy print outs of my photo montages and also some paper pictures to see how the ink would react.
I poured in the plaster and let them set for 36 hours as they took a while to harder

This is so more close up of the sika 212. I also did another block which had paper in the middle and I think this idea could work well in the right space as it looks really heavy against the paper which is soft

These are the outcomes I’ve the plaster with the paper from the intial experiment They actually worked out quite nicely when you were able to pull them apart although some of them had air bubbles which wasn’t ideal. The plaster had dried really flat and smooth which I liked. This lead me to decided to try ahain and make a collage potentially or see how I could incorporate my photo montages

Next I found that the concret I had was definitely not going to give me the right outcome. So my builder gave me the recommendation of buying this stuff called sika 212 which is a concrete that was self leveling and dried flat and smooth as.
This was a lot more heavy duty than the other concrete and plaster so I thought I might try adding foil to see if it held better.
It took about 24 hours to dry probably and then when I tipped it out of the mould the concrete had gone underneath slighting covering the paper.
The foil idea creates a very cool 3D surface which was hard and if you scaled it big it would look very cool huge scale. I was impressed how it came out although I was set on making something more paper looking.
I decided to wait a could of days and then try and smash it so that I could see what it looked like between the paper

The first experiment I did was trialling concret and plaster to try and achieve the crinkle concret look.
The concret was very textured as it was cheap and had lots of stones it in which I felt like wasn’t going to get the right texture I beeeded bjt. Thought I would try.
The out come didn’t work as the consultant ever wasn’t right and when it dried it was very crumbly.
The plaster I didn’t leave sit for long enough and it was quite bubbly.
But I tried to put the paper on the top and then the other one kind of in the middle to see how it would dry and what kind of effect it would make

Steven Holl Architects’ experimental “crinkle concrete” treatment gives walls in the new expansion, known as The Reach, the appearance of crumpled paper. More than an aesthetic development of an ancient material, the cast-in-place concrete diffuses sound and offers additional acoustic support in performance spaces. In a detailed interview with CityLab, Garrick Ambrose, the project architect for the Reach, explains all the benefits of their liquid invention and what they hope its future will be..
