My final project is the sum of all the hours i’ve spent watching after effects tutorials and trying out techniques. I decided to go with a black and white colour scheme because I found that colours didn’t give me the sharp, classical, fancy look I wanted. I find that it sort of alludes to the piano playing in the background also. In my second test project, the green one, I didn’t play around with cameras and null objects so much as in this. Because of that, this one manages to convey way more feelings of movement, I believe, which is especially important for kinetic typography, of course.
I had a lot of difficulties early on with trying to wrap my head around the theory to get the cameras and null objects to move how I wanted them to, however, now I think I wouldn’t need trial and error so much.
I aimed to convey double meanings with the typography being displayed - like some of the other people’s examples I’ve posted on my tumblr - and I’m quite proud of some of the little connections made. It really spices up the typography rather than just printing it out flatly.
Overall, the project was fun and I learnt a lot about both who Dame Kiri is (I didn’t know prior to this) and after effects in general.

This is another test of theme for the potential end product. I like that this one is more lively and has colour. I used green because it’s a very patriotic colour but I feel like it’s still not conveying the formal, and royal vibe that classical music and opera conveys.

This is my original after effects project where I was able to test my skills with null objects and kinetic typography. I kept aspects like the curtains very simple. Moving on from here, I’d like to incorporate more lively animations into my project and more musical themes.

Plan/Storyboard. My approach to this was to break down the transcript and identify what words allowed me to use animation techniques or vector imagery to convey more meaning than simply displaying the word in type.

I like how perfectly vector illustration is used alongside the kinetic typography in this example. The transitions are also very smooth.

I really enjoyed this video and how it managed to take an extra step and infer meanings through symbols and the way the words and letters moved, rather than just being a basic kinetic typography example.

My first brainstorm that lays out my thought process behind the physical tone and language in the speech and also how I could possibly communicate Dame Kiri’s profession in the project.

There are some really impression animations in this incorporating images into the typography.

I liked the simplicity of this kinetic animation and the colours, but also how there was still use of vector imagery but it didn’t go overboard and was still predominantly typography.

This video example has interesting changes in depth as well as the use of lighting effects and the background imagery.

An interesting note from the wiki caption is the quote, “described as ‘mellow yet vibrant, warm, ample and unforced’”. This is something that I could try to capture in the animations/colours within my project.

Speech Transcript
“I certainly thought I was born with something but it didn’t quite turn out to what it ended up to be. But I think as everyone said, the harder you work, the better I got and as I’ve gone through this whole four decades now; I look back and think, ‘oh my goodness it was unbelievable hard work and I’m very grateful for all the people who gave me these opportunities, but I’m also thrilled to be able to say that [for] every inch of hard work there was, there was nothing but pleasure in it.’ I really, really enjoyed even the worst times, which was sometimes a cold, a flu, voice throat problems, you know just getting through performances. “
