Mostly mash, but sometimes other, vaguely adjacent things. You can call me Syd if you like! I’m 19 and any pronouns are fine with me. My main is @loooiiee

me: so basically what i’m saying is that hawkeye and margaret’s relationship is a self-aware performance of compulsory heterosexuality. they’re both completely aware of their own queerness, as well as each other’s, but they also have this unspoken agreement that allows them to act out a fantasy where they can be this straight ideal that’s unattainable for both of them. even within this fantasy, though, the gender roles are reversed, with hawk falling into the housewife stereotype and margaret into the breadwinner, so despite the fact that they’re performing straightness it’s still a safe space for them to express themselves comfortably. their final kiss in “goodbye, farewell, and amen” is the perfect goodbye for them, because not only are they ending this performance they’ve been engaging in since “comrades in arms,” they’re also leaving the 4077, a space where queerness was comparatively normalized, and returning to the real world where they’ll once again have to be completely closeted. the fact that it comes after margaret has given up a career in the army (which can be read to an extent as her giving up on comphet), and after hawkeye has accepted that he’s never going to live out his domestic fantasies about BJ, also plays into the kiss. they’re not only giving up the performance; in a lot of ways they’re giving up performing, period, but they know that it won’t be sustainable once they reenter a society that’s about to enter the lavender scare era.
my professor: please i just need to know if your bibliography’s done
