i hate the way people (his own stans) discuss late spn sam and dismiss all his storylines and ways he actually took on a leader position with dean stepping aside, apprenticed under the most powerful witch alive and learned to accept himself and find his own purpose in their world. the idea that being less loud, less arrogant, more visibly traumatized and carrying on (couldn't resist) equates to being so pathetic and beaten down and lacking agency (because they don't like his choices or him making choices at all even though he does that plenty) and then celebrating those traits as a case of battered housewife syndrome is such a complete misreading of canon. why would you be so unkind to a character you like?

supernatural is what it is because it dared to say that family is hell but family is also heaven and everything that matters in the whole world. acknowledging and portraying dysfunction, then embracing said dysfunction and refusing to separate it from the love is compelling and haunting and one of the reasons the supernatural fandom is so divisive. no one is wrong for wanting sam and dean to find identity outside of the family but they are wrong for expecting it. both brothers perpetuate this cycle. neither is the other’s victim. they take turns playing each other, keeping each other human, making each other monstrous. rebelling against your family then choosing the comfort of your family anyway because nothing else has ever loved you as completely as that is a brave choice regardless of how well the writing pulls it off.

especially now, a show that consciously tried to tell a story about extreme codependency and parental abuse would take the easy way out because it’d be too concerned about the message it would have to send and the backlash it would receive on social media. supernatural, despite its problems, is a better and not worse story for not conforming to those expectations.

i will never understand the current obsession with prey animal sam because what i've always found interesting about sam winchester is that he's by nature and nurture a predator who tries so hard to be gentle

the funny thing about Panic Room Discourse™️is that sam gets smacked behind bars because he was out there...drinking people..like human people who are possessed by demons....like their autonamy has been ripped away but yeah he's allowed to chug chug chug....and when he gets out of the panic room again,,,guys do you know what he does?? he starts...drinking women to death again,,,..

meanwhile s5 dean over in the corner forgotten when he also got thrown into the panic room and it wasn't for hurting other people, it was because sam didn't agree with his decisions,,,almost like sam...didn't respect dean's autonomy and wanted to control his choices...
