Limang Libo by Ice Idanan (Codes, Mis En Scene, and Question and Answers) 12 - 14 - 16
The narrative film “Limang Libo” by Ice Idanan was a 14 min and 48 second video wherein it shows the life of two people, a woman named Susan who had troubles living alone and working as a midwife and a man named Manuel who was kind yet was forced to commit a crime for the sake of his wife and their baby.
To relate the set of parts or scenes to the film codes, we should consider what is technical, symbolic, or written. Here is what I have found.
There was a set of camera techniques that were used in the film like Medium Shot (0:13 – 0:49) where the Susan was crying, Close up (0:51 – 0:57) was used when Susan was trying to call Manuel. Long shots were also used when Manuel was beginning to snatch the phone of Susan’s son(6:40 – 6:45).Lighting was also used wherein the phone (3:40 – 3:45 & 4:21 – 4:40) was emphasized due to the Key light technique, as well as the letters in Susan’s table (4:10 – 4:20). All of these were the Technical codes.
Symbolic codes of the film consisted a telephone, a cutter and a cellphone. All of these were the main reasons to why the story escalated to that sad ending. The telephone was for calling Manuel, the cutter was for murdering Susan’s son, and the phone was the cause of the death of Susan’s son.
The written code was basically the title for the title itself was the reason why Manuel decided to snatch and kill.
And finally, the “Mis En Scene” of the story was the dark background of the film because it shows the dark and sad plot of the story, and the props used like the letters that shows the bills, and the bowl which was used for Manuel’s wife.
Answers for pages 131 - 136 (book: From Cave to Cloud: Media and Information Literacy for Today)
1.Why is Susan crying? ---She was crying because her financial problems were stressing her out. 2.The viewers will meet Susan and Manuel for the first time in this way. Do they know each other? ---No they do not know each other. They only met by the time Manuel was begging Susan to aide in the birth of Manuel’s child. 3. Manuel is a scavenger. What is the tool he uses for his work? ---In the film, Manuel was using a cutter while working. 4. Describe Susan’s setting, who is she expecting to come early in the morning? ---She was expecting her son to come home. 5. How much does Manuel earn for what he does? What does he do with the coins of the blind guitarist? ---He probably earns 50 pesos or less. As for the coins, he placed them in the can that the guitarist owns. 6. What does Manuel witness while enjoying the song of the blind guitarist? ---He witnessed an exchange between between two guys, one was holding a phone while the other one was holding money. 7. Who is knocking on Susan’s door? Where is her son, and at what diegetic time of day do the viewers meet him for the first time? --- The one knocking at her door was the mailman that carried Susan’s bills. The son was shown by the time it was dusk in the story. 8. What kind of relationship does Susan have with her son, according to her son’s friends? What does the cellphone indicate about this relationship between Susan and her son? In what way does the cellphone also function as a symbolic element in the narrative? ---The son was stated as a “Mama’s boy” by his friends in the story. As stated, it shows that her relationship with her son was intimate.  The cellphone basically symbolizes her relationship and love towards her son. 9. While Susan’s son is drinking out with his friends, where are Manuel and Susan? Why is Susan so Anxious? What is she reading and fussing about? What does her anxiety have to do with her son’s new cellphone? --- Manuel was together with his wife in their house while Susan was in their house’s dining area. She was anxious due to the number of bills she has to pay which is what she was reading and fussing about. The cellphone she gave her son was probably supposed to be used for those payments she had to fulfill. 10. How do Susan’s and Manuel’s lives cross? Other than crossing paths, in what other way are their lives paralleling each other? How do their parallel lives correspond to the parallel editing used by the film? ---Their lives crossed because of Manuel’s wife as they were seeking for help for giving birth to his child. 11. Why does Manuel have blood on his shirt in this scene? What was Susan thinking when she turned her head away from Manuel? What did she look at before asking for P5,000.00 from Manuel? ---Manuel had blood because his wife was letting out blood as he carried her. She was thinking about her bills which is why she asked for money so she could pay them. 12. How does the editing connect the spaces of Susan and her son, through the gesture of Susan’s turning her head? How does editing manipulate time, so that Susan ends up like she is turning to look at both her son and Manuel with her son? ---It is by connecting them accordingly to the position and and the scene that they were portraying. 13. How do these scenes parallel each other? How does the death of Manuel’s son ironically parallel the death of Susan’s son? ---They were parallel due to the situation and problem they faced, the time and place setting of both characters. As Susan was trying to solve her problems with money, she asked for payment from Manuel which was also troubled about money and ended up snatching and killing Susan’s son and then karma hit him and concluded with his newborn son to be dead. 14. How does editing connect images that are graphically similar or connected? ---It connects them based on the situation, problem or plot that was assigned to each character. 15. Do they know each other? Why is there blood on Manuel’s shirt? Why is Susan crying? --- They do not know each other. There was blood on his shirt because of his wife’s situation being pregnant which came from her. Susan was crying due to her required payments or bills. 16. What are the social issues brought fourth by the filmmaker on both sides of the hyperlinked story? --- The social issues introduced were poverty, underemployment and crime. 17. What is the overall effect of dramatic irony, or the fact that the viewers know more than the characters, on the social issues brought forward? ---It gave more emotional impact on the viewers, thinking that such scenes were too sad, sympathetic, or pitiable. 18. How does the film manipulate time and space to show intricacy of how people’s lives are intertwined? ---The film used camera techniques and different settings to show the complexity of the plot of the story or film. 19. How do these little details and gestures in the film not add up only to tell a story but to communicate the themes? --- They show the similarities between the people in the film and the people everywhere that make these kinds of details in reality. 20. Why is the film structured like a circle, ending it where it opened? --- To show the main point of the story and to promote curiosity and interest to the viewers in finding out the reason why the story ended that way.

The Sixth Sense Movie
To put my perspective into words, it was definitely, unexpectedly, incredibly amazing. It had the horror genre mixed in it but the heartwarming scenes were topnotch. Looking back at Marshall McLuhan’s Quote, “The Medium is The Message.” can be related to what the movie presented like in the situation wherein the little boy named “Cole” was arguing with his teacher because of a topic (he says that there were people hanged in their school in the past, and by the time he was with Dr. Crowe, three hanged people were shown.) that the teacher denied which he tried to defend to be true, unlike with the main character named Dr. Crowe, he believed . The Medium that was considered a message there was Cole’s position as a kid and student to the teacher, then as a patient to Crowe. As the quote indicates, the medium influences the message. Therefore, Cole’s position as a student and a child seemed to blocked the teacher’s understanding of the message while in Crowe’s perspective as a psychologist and considering Cole as his patient, he believed him and proved that the message Cole wanted to give was delivered and received. I would like to watch a movie similar to “The Sixth Sense” again in the future.
