As someone who speaks Japanese, Switzy did call Austria 'obaka' and 'obaka-san'! This was in the manga as well, IIRC, and I always thought it's pretty significant that this would later become Austria's catchphrase of sorts. The specific tone where Swiss said 'obaka-san' is a bit different from the tone Austria uses (Swiss definitely used -san in a derogatory way, Austria uses it to imply anything from 'you're a moron' derogatory to 'I'm trying to speak politely but I'm that type of sheltered-naive who thinks adding o- and -san to everything makes it polite' which can be pretty ouch if you think about where it came from hard enough lol).

Oh, thank you very much for the insight!! :D I've always thought Austria's 'obaka-san' had a layer of sarcasm (like, derogatory but hidden behind fake politeness that he's aware of), but what do you think? I might be just accidentally 'projecting' some speech form that exists in Italian/English but doesn't necessarily come across the same way in Japanese. Was my interpretation closer to how Switzerland means it instead? I'm really curious!!

It's so wild that "Austria's catchphrase was something he picked up on from Switzerland during childhood" doesn't seem to be a well-known fact in the Western fandom. It truly makes me think of how much we tend to miss out on in translation D: Like all the nuances they probably have in their speech patterns and the terms they use that can be rendered in another language just so much and the rest gets necessarily lost along the way </3

I dont usually think too much abt or draw nyo edelweiss and probably the main fault for that is a very silly personal one. Its that like, nyo switzerland’s canon design looks exactly like my sona and i start tweaking a bit if i gotta draw it. It doesnt help that all my friends draw me wearing swis clothes and agh i end up associating myself w nyo swi which is very silly lets be fr.

So for these real dumb personal reasons that i dont really think id find enjoyment in drawing me and austria, i came up w a wonderful idea rn😍.

tbh i dont think much would change dynamic wise, their friends breakup as kids was already like a girl friendship breakup, i still think nyoswitzerland would be bitter abt it while Austria is like “Vaaat” but then lowkey admiring swi on the downlow and tryna reconnect. I have many toughts abt edelweiss dynamics i never talk abt cuz self indulgency is not my forte.
