Github - Trirong
Only a little bit more info on Trirong.
I actually found this a few weeks back already but forgot to post it.
While it does’ not share any more info on the typeface itself, it does showcase its features quite nicely.
“Thai alphabet, round head, simple, formal style covering all applications “
“The symbol of the tricolor, which defines the meaning of the tricolor flag that red means blood sacrificed to the nation, white means purity of Buddhism and Dharma, blue means the royal color of the King.“

Rationale & Reflection
I adjusted the original design to be different for the reflection. This way they look like they are the same designer and project but with different designs. The colours and positioning have been switched and flipped.
Text might be adjusted as it hasn’t been proofread yet.

Final Changes - Gifs & Vid
Final Video Animation
This video animation has a new intro. I also changed the transition between background colours to an opacity edit, it used to slide up and change opacity, but now they just fade into each other. For the new intro I tried to apply the knowledge about momentum and weight onto the text by making it slow down after it hits each edge. It also shrinks like it is deflating, or moving further away with each bounce.
I have prepared all my PSD files and organised the layers so it will be easier for others to understand.
The other video animation has also been organised better and correctly named. The only animation change was the signboard transition has been made a lot smoother.
Final Gifs
The first gif has a new caption “ designed by” for more clarity on why it says Cadson Demak. The background image has been colour adjusted to match the red better and the layers have been organised much better, because I had a lot of extra vectors that I was testing before which were unnamed.
(Below)This gif has added a background for the first half and the layers have been organised and named. I also added my name in bottom corner to every animation.

Everything works as it should and looks good.
The intro will be changed tho.

Animation basics: The art of timing and spacing - TED-Ed
Animation is not the art of drawings that move, but the art of movements that are drawn - what happens between each frame is more important than what appears on each frame.
Timing & Spacing:
Speed/tempo, The more frames the slower the action will be, and less frames the faster the action will be.
Consider momentum and gravity in the animations. Do you want the text to appear heavy, soft or light for example? The momentum will change depending on the objects weight. To make text look heavy, I could add a bounce but have it a very low bounce and only 1 or 2 because it is heavy, however for a lighter object I could bounce it a lot higher, and many more times to appear lighter.
I could potentially use this idea as a new intro for video animation 1, which just has the square bouncing around the screen, which is very basic and rather boring. It also says nothing about the font.

Video Animation 3 - V.3
1080x1080, RGB, 24fps, 17 seconds, 417 frames.
Updated again. The signboards and text have been made larger to be more legible. Trirong in the last frame has been centred and the parallel lines fade away to leave Trirong alone for emphasis and impact. I also added different weight fonts for the glyphs to show the range of weights. The Bangkok scaled up stays on screen for longer to be more legible and able to appreciate the font. The Bangkok signboard has a jittery movement when it scales up and needs to be refined. I also need to add my name at the bottom very little to match my other animations.
This will most likely be one of the final 2 video animations uploaded into canvas next week.

Video Animation 3 - V.2
Changes to the video are: The black background is now blue. The “Serif & Looped Thai” fade from blue and back into blue instead of black. The glyphs that are pulled up from the bottom are no longer overlapping. The added frames of the signboard and text growing, and then turning into the end frame with the caption “This is Trirong”.
The overlapping glyphs update does make the first 5 glyphs look uneven, but it creates a better layout for the second set of glyphs. To fix this I could select a different glyph for the top row, but I feel it will still overlap like before because the bottom middle glyph has to hang to the left or right to swing. I think the Bangkok frame needs to stay longer to be able to appreciate the font and read it better without being rushed. I like the transition from that scene into the final layout though, it zooms in on the font features and creates parallel lines that my last text can sit on. I could also use more contrasting thickness of letters throughout the animation, at the moment only semi-bold and heavier weights are being used.

Video Animation 3 - New
I created another animation because I don’t feel quite happy with my first 2. This was looks a lot smoother and already more professional than before. The effects are simple but more interesting than my others, and less distracting to view. I got the idea to drag the letters up hanging on each other while viewing the Thai glyphs. many of them have little hooks or hanging pieces that made the movement possible. I selected glyphs I found unique and had the necessary parts. An issue that needs resolving is the middle Thai glyph and the “r’ glyph are overlapping and covering each other while being brought up. I think to resolve this I should shift the middle 2 glyphs further to the left, but this will uncentre them. The signboards was inspired by an image I was contemplating using as a animation background but was too busy. It was a photo of a city centre with many billboards and signage visible. While Trirong was probably not used for wayfinding, it was probably used for shop branding or product branding. This is hard to confirm because there is not a lot of information on the font, and since the company is Thai, its quite hard for me to understand the information on the site.

Week 11 - Refined Video Animation 2 & Gifs
Reworked the animations based on feedback and some of my changes to transition and colour. Anatomy circles are lighter shade. All reds and blues match across the animations. The Anatomy labels don’t slide into the frame but rather appear now.

Week 11 - Refined Video Animation 1
Working from the feedback received in class I reworked the Type Animation Video. I also adjusted my transitions to be smoother and less distracting than before, now that I know how to. The white text feels a lot more calming even with the busy movements than the black did. They stand out better as well. I have also adjusted the colour shades so that every animation will be the same shade.

Type Specimen Booklet - Feedback
Incorrectly stapled - The inner folds of the staple should have been on the inside of the book.
Page 1 Introduction - needed to remove the extra bracket in my reference, and add the reference to the last line.
Page 7 Anatomy Glossary - The spacing between the columns should be increased.
Page 8 & 9 Anatomy - The circles indicating the labels should be the same size circle.

Illustrator Asset Pages
I created majority of the text and glyphs from my animations in illustrator and copied them across to photoshop. It was easier to use the glyphs panel in Illustrator than Photoshop. Because Trirong has many different glyph characters that are not found in the standard alphabet, it was the smarter choice to use AI. I also created a simple 9x9 grid that i copied into Photoshop when making the animation, so that I could place my objects in the 3rds of the frame, or centred. This also helped keep the transitions and movements on a steady line. A Few of my designs I copied across from my type specimen booklet. When copying those designs into photoshop I didn’t have much freedom to change and create movement within them, so I used Illustrator to recreate and adjust them to my liking. Most simple shapes I created within Photoshop, and many text animations were also created within Photoshop.

Rationale - in progress
A rationale describing my skills and issues during part 2 of GRAD504 Materials & Media II. I decided to design my rationale and reflection this time because for project one I didn’t, and it was pointed out that everything should be designed. The envelopes, the rationales/reflections, and any other outputs from the designer that normally a client would receive. I took that to heart and agree with it. I used the T from Trirong as a background object, and Trirong as my header fonts, but found it was better with a sans font as the body copy to make it more legible.

Technical Issues Resolved
I figured out what was causing my previous canvas issues in my animation.
Even though I did everything the same in class and at home, somehow my preset that I used in class had changed and was now using artboards (see red circle on screenshot). When I unticked it and created another video it did not auto adjust the canvas size, like before when I placed objects outside the frame. Its odd because I had used this preset in the class tutorial beforehand (and moved objects outside the frame), but when I tried at home it was causing the issue, even though I hadn’t changed anything. I am glad to have figured out what was causing the issue though. Now any future animations I will be able to solve and avoid this issue much quicker, if it occurs.
