I often must warn you as I warn my own students: You are being educated here to put a Black face on white power. You are being educated to make people think that because you have a job, and you eat well, that Black people somehow are entering and moving into a new age and new set of power relationships. Nothing has fundamentally changed. You’re Black slave grandfathers and grandparents were not all field hands. They were not all house servants. The division of Black labor under slavery was much more diverse than that. You had many skilled craftsmen who were slaves, ship builders, iron workers, and carpenters, and millwrights, and others. But they all worked for one fundamental thing. And that is the enrichment and profits of their white masters.
