102. Book - The Portable Henry Rollins
Author - Henry Rollins Year - 1997 Rating - 2/10
What it is.
A collection of Rollins’ essays, poems and short stories.
What rates it.
My partner and I joke that Rollins’ is the original incel and the writing collected in this book does not lead me away from that conclusion. Angry, violent, misogynistic and racist - I only stuck through the book because I know what he is like today. On a positive note, I guess people are capable of change.

101. Book - Theroux The Keyhole
Author - Louis Theroux Year - 2021 Rating - 4/10
What it is.
Theroux’s diary during the COVID lockdowns on 2020.
What rates it.
Theroux’s spectrum-esque obliviousness of what is happening around him, and to him, and the impact that its has on others is astounding. Throughout the book I felt like he was ungrateful toward his wife, and found it challenging because the man I see in documentaries is usually trying to find the empathy in his subjects.

100. Film - Eastern Promises
Year - 2007 Director - David Cronenberg Cast - Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel Cinematographer - Peter Suschitzky Rating - 9/10 For fans of - A History of Violence, No Country For Old Men, The Godfather
What it is.
A teenager who dies during childbirth leaves clues in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.
What rates it.
Cronenberg’s plot twists, even though consistent throughout his catalogue, still come as a surprise. The storytelling has you so enthralled in what is happening in the moment, you don’t get time to notice what’s happening beneath. Genius work.

99. Film - Good Time
Year - 2017 Director - Benny and Josh Sadfie Cast - Robert Pattinson, Benny Sadfie, Jennifer Jason Leigh Cinematographer - Sean Price Williams Rating - 10/10 For fans of - Heaven Knows What, Uncut Gems, Panic In Needle Park
What it is.
Two brothers botch a bank robbery where one of them ends up in prison. Hoping to break his brother out, Connie Nikas relentlessly explores the grit of New York hoping that any path will lead him back to his brother.
What rates it.
Raw and real - it’s the New York you never see in films but the New York you feel as soon as you get there. Intense, nauseating, fearful, adrenaline rushed and hustling. The lighting, the camera shots, the music and the acting pull you in tightly to the characters. You feel part of it and you feel like all of them - wanting to get out but you just can’t.

98. Film - Norwegian Wood
Year - 2010 Director - Anh Hung Tran Cast - Ken'ichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara Cinematographer - Mark Lee Ping-bing Rating - 1/10 For fans of - Lost In Translation, Normal People, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
What it is.
Another story of a boring guy with two women that are too good for him pining for him.
What rates it.
Nothing. I hated this film and wish it ended sooner. The cinematography was brilliant, but I wish the talent was used elsewhere.

93. Film - It’s Only The End Of The World (Juste la fin du monde)
Year - 2016 Director - Xavier Dolan Cast - Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux Cinematographer - André Turpin Rating - 3/10 For fans of - Tom At The Farm, I Killed My Mother
What it is.
A terminally ill writer has an emotional reunion with his estranged family, navigating the complex dynamics and lingering regrets in their final moments together
What rates it.
I found this movie boring since the predictable family dynamics didn't surprise me. Although Cassel's performance in the final argument scene was strong, it might have been impressive to me because I love when he plays an unhinged brute.

92. Film - A History Of Violence
Year - 2005 Director - David Cronenberg Cast - Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello Cinematographer - Peter Suschitzky Rating - 5/10 For fans of - Momemto, The Machinist
What it is.
The life of a seemingly ordinary man has a violent past resurfaced, forcing him to confront the consequences of his actions and the fragility of his identity
What rates it.
Like all Cronenberg films, the film unravels in a way where you aren’t sure of anyone’s true identity, and then the bigger solve - if it even matters.

90. Film - Videodrome
Year - 1983 Director - David Cronenberg Cast - James Woods, Debbie Harry Cinematographer - Mark Irwin Rating - 5/10 For fans of - Scanners, Network, American Psycho
What it is.
A programmer at a TV station that specialises in adult entertainment searches for the producers of a dangerous and bizarre broadcast.
What rates it.
The film's commentary on media's role in shaping society, particularly regarding the once-taboo snuff film, prompts the question: Has its prophecy about our eternal craving for sex and violence come true with the widespread availability of such content online?

89. Book - Feminasty
Author - Erin Gibson Year - 2018 Rating - 1/10
What it is.
Comedic personal essays about the plight of being a woman.
What rates it.
This book is terrible. At times I found the jokes funny but then when I thought about the subject matter that she was making jokes about, I realised that the writer is a white feminist. In moments when women were clearly discriminated because of their race and being a female, she would label it as the sexism that she experienced herself. It was just stupid, immature and does nothing for the cause.

88. Book - How To Think More Effectively
Author - The School of Life Year - 2020 Rating - 5/10
What it is.
A guide to optimising seemingly primitive brain behaviours to turn them into insightful outputs.
What rates it.
The book covers a wide spectrum of brain behaviours and has exercises to help train new muscles in the brain. The prompts make you dig deeper into your own thoughts, and gives you the courage to dissect them more.
