Absolutely obsessed at the moment thinking about the missing Death Note rivalry. About the two characters whose potential for conflict was never addressed in the manga or anime, who rarely if ever get brought up in the context of each other.

Thinking about... L and Ryuk. And how everything L in his obsession wanted from Kira - everything he resorted to mindgames and stalking and cameras and chains to try and force Light to yield up to him - was already and always Ryuk's the whole time. Ryuk knows how Kira kills, reads every name over Kira's shoulder and sees how all of Kira's tricks are done (and indeed is occasionally holding up the other end of them). Ryuk lounges unrebuked in Light's personal space, on Light's very own bed, and probably sits there at night too and watches Light sleep. Ryuk stares at Light and never blinks and follows him everywhere he goes, and Light's response is to stand fearless in Ryuk's shadow and hide nothing from his eyes. Ryuk gets fed his favourite treats from Light's own hand when his withdrawal symptoms are tying him up in knots, and you can't tell me L wouldn't mentally implode at the thought of licking cake frosting from Kira's fingertips.

And Light asked - Light trusted! - Ryuk to help rip out his memories and hide them so L wouldn't be able to touch them.

Basically I'm saying I think L would've been even more upset about the idea of shinigami if he knew that one of them in particular was getting more from Light/Kira, freely and thoughtlessly bestowed, than L ever managed to take by force or threat or enticement or all the power at his command. And this is self-indulgent of me I know but I really would've loved to see Ryuk get to pop up somewhere along the line, get in L's face, and tell him as much.
