Dally was a figment of Ponyboy and Johnny's imagination. When Ponyboy met Johnny he was 4 while Johnny was 7. Johnny already knew Soda and Darry and told Ponyboy he wished he had an older brother. So Ponyboy told him "Why don't I make you one?"

So he grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and started drawing. In an attempt to be funny he gave the drawing bleach blonde hair, an elf-like face, and sharp animal teeth. Before Pony could rip out the paper and say he was joking, Johnny grabbed the paper and hugged it then look Pony in the eyes with a happy smile and said, "I love him! "

They named him Dallas Winston and called Dally for short. The rest on the gang just played along and became friends with "Dally"

They gave him a tough personality which made Johnny think he could protect him like a brother would. When they went to the drive in a guy sitting next to them was harassing two girls. He had brown hair and brown eyes and they thought he acted like Dally a lot so when Johnny said "Leave them alone Dal." And the stranger replied "What did you say to me you little shit" It wasn't because they told him to back off it was cause they called him something that wasn't his name. And when they killed Bob they ran to this old abandoned place that used to be called Bucks Palace and they found a gun and a jacket which in their mind Dallas had given to them along with some money they found.

They found a church and saw the letters K.W and both agreed it was Dallys cousin. When they were driving back a man saw the two scared boys in a church so he picked them up and bought them food. They called him Dal but he didn't care.

When Johnny died Pony thought it was best for Dally to be with Johnny so he imagined Dally killing himself. But he regretted it when he got Johnny's letter telling Dally to watch a sunset and to stay with a kid attitude when he told him to stay gold. When Pony said "It's to late" It was because Dally was gone and he wasn't a kid.
