Jiu-Jitsu is the gentle art its the art where a small man is going to prove to you, no matter how strong you are, no matter how mad you get, that you're going to have to accept defeat. That's what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is."
-Saulo Ribeiro
I find this statement about the art of jiu-jitsu to be very true. In my own personal experience, the first time i ever tried jiu jitsu i was getting tapped and choked by smaller individuals than me. My mentality when i first got on the mats to spar was; i can take these guys i wrestled most of my highschool years, im strong im fit, this will be easy i can hold my own. Sure enough i was put against a skinny, scronny, lanky looking guy,who obviously had done jiu-jitsu for many years. Anyways he made me tap out in the first 30 seconds of our sparring session. what really pissed me off was that i was trying really hard using all my strength to control him but it wouldnt work. i could tell by the look of his face, he was all nochalant was literally just waiting for me to get tired. Everything i tried he would counter i noticed he would use my strength against my own. Which ironically thats what jiu jitsu is all about. Its about knowing how to use leverage, timing, using less of your own energy and use your opponents agianst his. That first year of jiu jitsu for me was very humbling the little guys always beat me. eventually i got better but nonetheless, jiu jitsu does give the advantage or opportunity to beat the bigger badder person.
