hey so what do you think cal and andre’s favourite movies are? also i love how you write them so much. they feel so human. their relationship is so gross and so in-between and so subtle and small and sad please keep doing what you do.
OBVIOUSLY star wars for andre. i think he'd have a weakness for the movies he grew up on; things like die hard and princess bride and never ending story and whatever else.
cal'd be a little more niche. loves to rent armfuls of DVDs from the local blockbuster/whatever. i can't prove it but in my heart i know he was an og weeb. saw akira and felt his brain chemistry change in real time.
and yeah :( their relationship is so... the tragedy of it to me is that it is so utterly preventable. they are so repressed and there is so nuch passion between the two of them simmering just below the surface that is never actualised, never able to be processed or acknowledged. cal and andre are "doomed" i guess but that fate is entirely self-imposed

thanks so much for your writing tips and reading recs from the other day! so so super helpful. was wondering if you have any tips for writing smut/erotica specifically? i feel like it’s harder to come by it written well
no problem at all anon :D
i think writing erotica/smut/whatever tends to be a very intuitive process with what feels right. every reader has huge variations on what THEY want in smut. i might write a longer post once im home (writing this on my break LOL) but here’s some hard and fast rules
the terminology u use is so important. some words/euphemisms squick people out a lot and they can really turn u off. If i see the word Manhood im out
PERSONALLY i think the build up is more important than the actual scene. it needs to feel gratifying and for me i need a developed context to Get Into It
AVOID EPITHETS. especially in same sex scenes. “the brunette” “the boy” gets SO confusing so quick
keep track of positions and body parts lol. be clear. sometimes it’s so confusing and hard to figure out the orientation of everyone
avoid porny/cliche dirty talk.. very often feels out of character
DONT BE AFRAID TO GET FREAKY WITH IT!

been binging all your caldre fics lately and waaaaow you’re such an excellent writer! would you perhaps have any tips or reading recommendations? thanks :D
hiii anon thank you so much!!! i think ive answered a similar ask before (ill find and link it) which was a little more comprehensive but i’ll try and give you the rundown of my advice :P i dont want to come across like i think im some huge authority on fic writing and i definitely have a lot to improve on, BUT i have also been fic writing for 10+ years atp so here’s what helped me the most
READ READ READ. i can’t say this enough. i feel like u can tell when u read a fic if the author actually *reads* and u can especially tell if they only read other fic. there’s nothing bad with that ofc, but it gets insular quickly. read different book genres, read different authors from different cultures, read translations and non fiction!
better yet, read with intent. if you didn’t get the point of english class, this is the perfect time to try to revisit all of that. read and pick up on what technical aspects you enjoy. is it the flow of the prose and authorial tone? is it the use of metaphor and imagery? is it the narrative structure (eg. chronological 3-act versus something asynchronous). really try to break down what you’re looking at. understanding the purpose of each of these aspects will help you implement them in your own writing with intent and effect :)
don’t be afraid to cut down. i think a pitfall for a LOT of writers at beginner-intermediate skill levels is going “oh shit! i can write well!” (very very valid) and beginning to toss in every big word and metaphor they can think of. it can quickly become overbearing and hard to follow the main thread of the plot. how many times have you gotten 2-3 paragraphs into a text and gone “i still have no clue what’s going on”? it ends up as “padding” - the fic often doesn’t have enough substance to carry itself, so its made up with a padded word count. learning when to be sparing with description is key. the more sparing you are with it, the more effective it is when you DO use it. have confidence in your own ability to tell a compelling storyline, and forget about the word count :)
avoid cliches/archetypes (sometimes). i think this can especially apply to zero day fics specifically. while its easy when you’re starting out to just mimic the same archetypes you see in fics (eg. cal as the soft submissive one and andre as the dominant mean one or whatever. i’ll get mad about it) the fics that stand out will always be those that aim to flesh out their own characterisation. my general rule is that if you can like. ctrl+f search and replace the characters names with another pairing from some other fandom, you’ve missed the mark.
SORRY THIS ENDED UP BEING LONGER THAN ANTICIPATED. i’ve been sooo bad and not really reading lately but here’s a quick list of some of my favourite books. most of these are Very popular and pretty basic but i love them (if u can’t tell. i love american lit and the beat movement lol)
the catcher in the rye - jd salinger
invisible monsters - chuck palahniuk
sleepers - lorenzo carcaterra
shirley jackson - we have always lived in the castle
east of eden - john steinbeck (any of his works in general!)
on the road - jack kerouac
smoking the bible - chris abani (some of my favourite poems ever)
