With Monochromatica and Drag Imitates Art we tackled the first two categories of the All Stars 9 Paint Ball, so it's about time we put together an ensemble for the third and final category - Paint Ball Eleganza! The queens had to construct their outfits in the werkroom so I wasn't sure what direction I was going to take my idea, but then I stumbled on this GORGEOUS painted dress and my mind was set. Some in-game eye makeup added a perfect painterly touch and I topped off the whole look with a hairstyle influenced by an ICON of paint - the one and only Bob Ross.

The second category of the All Stars 9 Paint Ball was 'Drag Imitates Art', which had the queens turn the works of famous artists into fabulous outfits. I was honestly shocked no one made reference to Roy Lichtenshein's ICONIC pop art creations, so of course I had to give it a go myself. Naturally these artworks lend themselves to retro 1950s styling and I kept the colour palette to bold primary hues. How cool is that halftone make up by the way?!

Episode two of Drag Race All Stars 9 is my favourite type of episode - a ball. Specifically, The Paint Ball. I adore that all the queens get to showcase so many looks and the three categories allow for some really creative interpretations of each theme. The first category is Monochromatica and I turned to an icon of the drag scene for inspiration. Yes, that's happening!
I pulled my colour inspo from Juno's famous yellow gloves to create an entire outfit in the sunny shade, which contrasts so nicely with her blue alien skin. I kept accessories kitschy and retro, with a heavy 60s vibe. Stunning!

With the commencement of Rupaul's Drag Race All Stars 9 I'm bringing back the Drag Dolls series! It's my all time favourite show so I couldn't let the opportunity pass, especially for an all stars season.
The runway category for episode one was 'Signature Look, Signature Fragrance'. While the queens actually created custom perfume bottles to co-ordinate with their runway outfits, I decided to pull inspiration from an existing (and VERY iconic) scent - Daisy by Marc Jacobs. Across the Daisy range the packaging has a very 1960s mod vibe to it, so naturally I went in that style direction. I even managed to find a CC bottle of Daisy perfume that you can add to your game!

Lace as a luxury was carried over from the 17th century, used as a status simple for the wealthy to flaunt. From the mid-century on it migrated to the neck in the form of delicate chokers, which were a fashionable alternative to traditional jewelled necklaces. As hairstyles became larger hat styles became smaller until they were discarded altogether for a time, followed by extremely large hats that accommodated the curls, plaits and frizzed hair beneath. The commencement of the 1700s saw women's hair styles stay fairly demure, but it wouldn't take long for them to become much more elaborate. The popularity for wigs in men's styles crossed over to women, and as such hair styling opened up to wider experimentation. The development of heated curling tongs - paired with wool pads and wire supports - helped achieve the voluminous dos synonymous with the era. CC links and reference images under the cut.

As in womenswear, early 17th century menswear styles maintained the basic features of late 16th century dress. However, come the 1610s romantic adornments and embellishments really started to explode in popularity. Rosettes were added to shoes, lace trimmed collars and cuffs, and sashes became a way to signify group membership in an era before military uniforms. While women's fashion became fuller, men's styles slimmed further and further until the silhouette was far removed from the boxy shape of the 1500s.

By the 1600s long hair was well and truly back in fashion for men. Toward the end of the century - when French king Louis XIV began to lose his hair - thick, flowing wigs came into fashion. Beards were less popular than previous centuries, but moustaches were still in vogue. These were styled and kept neat with wax. As hair volume grew facial hair decreased, until it all but went out of fashion by the end of the century. CC links and reference images under the cut.

The Baroque period saw a softening of women's fashion, with the silhouette becoming fuller and higher waisted. Leg-o-mutton and three quarter sleeves added a billowy upper half to dresses. Shimmering soft satins and tonnes of delicate lace trimmings were all the rage. Necklines continued to broaden, eventually even falling off the shoulders in some styles.

Baroque accessories - BONUS EDITION!
A quirky little trend that was popular in the 1600s was the fashionable wearing of masks. These were usually made from pasteboard or leather and covered in black silk or velvet, making them a relatively affordable and highly visible way of wearing fine fabrics without having to purchase the yards of textile required for a full garment. They also provided privacy and an air of mystery to the wearer. CC links and reference images under the cut.

Since my 2k follower CAS background collection was a hit I thought it would be fun to put together some companion collections for my Ultimate Decades Challenge content. Going forward they'll release at the same time as their associated lookbooks and CC collections, but for now I'm retroactively posting backgrounds for the 1300s, 1400s and 1500s. I always like to put a colour palette together before I start working on an historical lookbook to aid with visual consistency, and for the 1300s I pulled the colours directly from pigments used at the time (complete with period-appropriate names).
You can download them here, but be sure to only add one to your mods folder at a time.

In the early part of the 17th century holdovers from the Tudor period continued to be in style, but soon enough the iconic ruff would evolve into delicate soft and standing lace collars. By the 1620s women's fashion - and by extension their accessories - became a lot more simple. Hats kept growing in size from the previous century, both in width and height. Pearls were HUGELY popular as they were a way to display wealth. In fact, it's hard to find a woman's portrait from this period that doesn't feature pearl jewellery. The Baroque period is often an overlooked one, thanks in large part to the fact that the incredibly iconic Tudor and Rococo periods bookend it. However, it still had some standout trends of its own - most notably the unique hairstyles that 1600s women donned. Delicate face-framing curls became all the rage and styles lowered in height, instead moving volume to the sides. CC links and reference images under the cut.
