The Consequences of Bibs

Bohrok are cool. Their combiners are not. They don't even have names, look it up.

I was messing around with the Bohrok Kaita builds a bit and noticed something funny with the instructions.

The combination of Lehvak, Gahlok, and Kohrak, the Ice Bohrok, which will be referred to as Kaita A, clearly just uses most of a Lehvak for its head. Its such a reuse that they literally just tell you to go back to earlier in the book and reread those instruction pages, rather than reprint them, as this part of the instructions was in Lehvak's book.

This has the result of the Kaita A instructions being 80% of a bohrok shorter than the other one, so they have more pages left than the other combiner!

They make use of this with 4 pages with lots of nice story renders, 4 per page.

Now the second combiner, composed of Pahrak, Tahnok, and Nuhvok, referred to here as Kaita 1, has a bit of a difference. Much of the build of Kaitas A and 1 is identical, the main differences being in the arms and the upper torso. Kaita 1 also embeds Tahnok's face shield inside of Nuhvok's body.

This means that they can't just reuse parts of the main Bohrok instructions like Kaita A, which leads to the instructions overall being longer. To keep things simple they most likely wanted the instructions for all 6 sets to be the same length, so this led to a reduction in the number of pages devoted to the story renders, having only two.

They're much smaller also, they manage to squeeze 9 per page compared to Kaita A's 4.

But you may notice something odd there. 4x4 is 16, but 9x2 is 18!

That's right, despite having smaller images overall, and less pages, the Kaita 1 instructions actually contain MORE images. The hive cell about to burst and Onua and Whenua meeting at the Amaja Nui are exclusive to these two books.

Yes I said two. For poor Nuhvok, after the first two books cover the legs and head, has to show everything else, and thus only gets a single page of renders.

It shares the same format as the others of Kaita 1, but is super abbreviated.

So on this day let us all take a moment to appreciate little Nuhvok, the Bohrok that had to shoulder the bulk of its Kaita instructions due to the addition of a silly little bib, and as a consequence contained the least story renders of any of them.

Wanna make your own puppets!?

I love puppets! I want to see more puppets and puppeteers in the world!

To that end, here is a link to all the patterns I've collected over the years. It's not many as I make my own but there's plenty here for new makers to start with! Included is a Fraggle pattern and a Sprocket pattern! But new puppeteers should start with Glorified Sock Puppet.

What you'll need for the Glorified Sock Puppet.

Fabric. This could be anything but Fleece is easy to come by, cheap, and very very easy to work with. If you wanna take it a step further Anton Fleece is the fabric they use to make Muppets but there's only a few places that still make it.

Thread

Hot glue

Sewing needle. A sewing machine is much much faster but if you don't have the money or space for one you can hand sew everything. It just takes forever.

Pins

There's various ways to make eyes but I use cut in half ping pong balls. Gotta get the quality ones though. Cheap ones wont work.

Quarter inch foam

Toulan's Elixir

Hard plastic. I cut mine out from a plastic tote. They're very cheap. You will need sand paper to score the surface though or the glue wont stick to it. Scoring the surface is when you rub it with sand paper until it's all scratched up. You can use cardboard or even card paper but it wont last long.

Dowel rods. I buy my arm rods off the internet but I use to just use dowel rods painted black.

12-3pm is work time. You're expected to wear your usual uniform - I'll be inspecting it regularly to make sure standards are high.

3-7pm is dress time. You know we usually have guests, so I want you to look your best. I expect a full length satin ball gown with at least three large petticoats. And don't try to hide wearing flats under the skirt - you know it has to be heels. I'll be checking!

7pm-8am is night-night time. I'll be selecting your satin pyjamas or nightie depending on how good you have been. Don't forget that if you leave your room, you should wear your satin robe and heels. I want to hear where you are.

Two thrift finds: 2 two-record instruction courses for a Sears Tower typewriter and various models of Smith Corona typewriters. Both from 1959 with the same tracklist but different pictures so they may be the same recordings. 😂

The Sears records box curiously also contains the paper ephemera from a General Electric television with built-in record player purchased in Utah, the owner's manual for the Tower typewriter, and the paper disc that goes over the turntable in that record player. Those will be a separate post.

Tag Nomination Instructions

To nominate tags, you need an AO3 account, so request an invite if you haven't done so already! Tag nominations will open May 29, with the Discord server, and will remain open until June 12.

Tag nominations will determine what relationships and fairy tales are included in the exchange. These will be the ONLY ones included, so you want to nominate tags, especially if you have niche taste!

With that said, please:

Only nominate if you want to participate.

Join the Discord server before nominating, and put your AO3 username in your Discord nickname so I know who you are.

Only nominate things you want to offer or request (so don't nominate something just because you think it should be included).

Nominating Relationships

Go the tag set on AO3. Here, you can see what has already been nominated.

Click "Nominate" in the upper right.

If you use pseuds, select the pseud you will be participating in the exchange under. If you don't use pseuds, you can ignore this.

Okay, now you're going to start nominating! I'm going to start by nominating Sophie/Fitz. The slash means that this is the romantic ship between these characters. That's an important distinction!

Next, I'm going to nominate Sophie & Fitz, which is the platonic form of the pairing. I want to offer both dynamics, so I need to nominate both!

Just like that, I'm going to continue down the line, entering all of the relationships I want to nominate.

Until... oops! I've hit a pairing that doesn't have a canon tag. I want to nominate Sophie & Silveny, but it's not an option in the dropdown. So, I'm going to need to make them a tag.

The proper way to do it is:

Characters alphabetical by last name. Silveny doesn't have a last name, so I'll just use "Silveny," but I'll use "Foster" for Sophie. So Sophie Foster will go first!

Using the correct relationship indicator (& or /). In this case, an ampersand (&) for platonic!

And since I'm creating a tag, I need to put the fandom in the second box.

So my nomination will look like this:

Another useful thing to know is that you can nominate tags with more than two characters. If I have an idea that really focuses on Sophie, Edaline, and Grady, I can nominate them as a trio!

You can technically put even more characters than that, but I wouldn't recommend it, since that makes it harder to match with someone.

So with all that knowledge under my belt, I'm going to finish my relationship nominations! I'm going to nominate a full 10, since I have lots of ideas, but you can do fewer than that. My finished relationship nominations look like this:

Nominating Fairy Tales

Time to nominate the fairy tales that will be used for AUs in the event!

For this, we will not be using the dropdown. You are going to enter the name of the fairy tale manually, with "AU" at the end.

If it is an oral tradition or legend, and you don't care which version, you can just put the common name: Cinderella AU

If you are nominating a specific book, include the author name in parenthesis after the title: Ella Enchanted (Gail Carson Levine) AU

If you are nominating a specific movie, include the year in parenthesis after the title: Cinderella (1950) AU

If you are nominating a specific play or musical, include the year it premiered and the type: Cinderella (2013 musical) AU

Remember, though—just like with nominating relationships, if you're too specific, you might not match with anyone. So keep that in mind!
