The capitalist franchise that is Gundam definitely forgets this root of empathy and just makes it super cool space magic all too often though.

This is partially why I love Mobile Suit Gundam 0096: Gundam Unicorn so much because even with it being the most blatant example of bullshit Newtype magic it NEVER forgets that the root of the Newtype Condition is empathy.

Especially with regards to the relationships between Banagher, Audrey (Mineva), Riddhe, Marida (Ple Twelve), and Frontal.

I know I’m not the biggest Gundam blog, but I figured I’d give an explanation of newtypes for new fans getting into the Universal Century. (Or at least my understanding/ perspective of newtypes.)

To start, as people in the universal century begin to live in space, their “souls are no longer held down by gravity.” Through, this, humans are and will be able to truly understand each other.

A lot of characters in Zeta Gundam talk a lot about sensing each other’s wills, I have always understood this as that understanding that newtypes gain of each other. Since they can understand the will of another person, they can understand their motives and their reasoning.

This makes them better pilots, because once someone tries to kill them, or fire a weapon at them, they can sense the others will, and respond accordingly quicker than a normal person would.

Newtypes are basically the ultimate empaths but then you start getting into Psychoframe and Psycommu (short for Psycho Communicator System) which takes their New Type abilities and ramps them up by several factors to frankly insane levels.

Cause it starts with them just being able to sense the emotions/senses of others, usually their killing intent, and using that to enhance their piloting capabilities to being able to literally control the fabric of reality once Psycommu is introduced with things like the Nu, Neo Zeong, and the three Gundam Unicorns (Unicorn, Banshee, and Phenex).

Then of course there's so much to be said about Cyber-Newtypes, which are baseline or near baseline humans that have been genetically and cybernetically enhanced to gain the abilities of Newtypes but that comes with the added drawback of almost all of them invariably going insane at some point, the exception so far being Marida Cruz (Ple Twelve) who did go insane but then came back to her senses.
