Zen is a Prince From Grass

First, we will start with comparisons.

Younger Zen/Hyun (Age 18?):

Younger Jieun/Etinos (Age 16):

Older Jieun/Etinos (Age 19?):

Older Zen/Hyun (Age 23):

... I wanted to get that out of the way first. Zen and Jieun obviously have physical similarities (especially when they were both younger and drawn with thick eyelashes), but let’s go beyond this. After all, Cheritz has a habit of making the love interests in their games have similarities to each other. In every game, you always have 5 love interests and 1 MC pursuing them because of reasons (V and Ray's routes broke this pattern, but the original MM only had 5 routes so...). There are more specific similarities like 707 and Red, Yeonho, and Yoosung, arguably Lance and Jumin, etc. Now, I think this goes deeper in the case of Zen and Jieun.

In another post, I talk about how there is a pattern with Cheritz boys who have red eyes, and it's that they all have powers. It is explicitly stated/heavily hinted they have this power, and I pointed out that Jieun and Zen’s power is basically the same. (There’s gonna be a lot of screenshots as points of evidence/to get my points across).

I don’t have the exact screenshot of Zen saying that his dreams predict the future, but I’m sure he explicitly mentions this at some point in the game. If he didn’t, in my other post I mention 2 examples of him predicting the future. What am I suggesting exactly? Well, I think that Zen is not only royalty but also related to Jieun somehow.

Let’s start with what we know about Jieun’s power:

This is Jieun’s explanation from his route when confronted by Heejung. I have no idea where it is mentioned, but having red eyes is also another sign that you have these powers. (If someone knows where in the game this comes up let me know!). When he sees the future, wind flies everywhere and he uses it on purpose to see Heejung’s future specifically.

This is different from Zen, who only sees the future in dreams, and they come to him randomly. Though, I think Jieun does mention that he had to train his power in order to use it at will. If Zen was gifted this power by the gods, then doesn’t that mean that he is from Grass? And not only that, he has the potential to become king? If that is the case, why is he not there, and living a normal life? 

To answer that question, we have to talk about Jihae/Eddison:

He is key to this theory. He is Jieun’s knight and his duty is to protect him. In Jieun’s route, he talks briefly about their past:

Jieun is talking about his own mother, and how she was a maid, while his father was presumably the king because Jieun still retains his prince status, despite his parents being from different classes.

He was separated from her after he was born, and the only way she can hear about Jieun is through Jihae (Jieun calls him ‘Eddie’ as a nickname).

A lot to unpack here. This dialogue shows how Grass has a strict hierarchy. Aristocrats and commoners shouldn’t have relations. If they do, the child of such an affair is treated badly. Even though one of Jieun’s parents was of low birth, because he can see the future and has white hair, he is left alone. In fact, he’s still eligible to become king despite everything. Jihae was in the same boat, but because his hair was gray he was judged, called ugly, and a bad omen. In the dialogue above we see Jihae call himself filthy, a testament to how people treat him on the daily. Jieun recognizes how beautiful Jihae truly is, and that isn’t an exaggeration! When they come to Earth, Jihae is offered modeling jobs when he’s in Busan and starts a career out of it.

The 2nd screenshot shows him in one of his modeling gigs (Let’s take a second to appreciate him). It’s not that the rabbits in Grass do not see that he is beautiful, but that his social status as a child of a commoner/outsider derides everything else. In fact, his good looks probably garner even more disgust. Heejung also considers Jieun to be beautiful, so it might also be a facet of being noble/royal to be beautiful by Earth's standards.

What does that have to do with Zen? Well: 

1. Has gray hair.

2. Is considered extremely handsome, and is so popular that even Jumin has offered him to model for his company.

3. Has red eyes and can see the future in his dreams. 

4. His healing ability! Magic is a thing in Grass so maybe that has something to do with it?

5. His own ‘family’ have voiced how much Zen doesn’t look like them:

“Why do we look so different?” I wonder why too Zen’s bro.

Poor Zen still gets bothered by people because of his looks. At least it's not as hostile as Jihae’s experience, but it’s upsetting nonetheless.

All of this added up, and you can see where I’m going with this. Zen could be a prince, one parent royal, and the other a commoner/outsider. This gives him gray hair, but he is still born with the power of precognition, making him eligible to become king. Who knows if his power would outweigh his status? It might not, if he ended up on Earth in the end.

Jieun stated that once every 3 generations, a divine child like himself is born. Zen and Jieun are clearly not the same people since their hair color is different.

I believe Zen is either a prince:

1. 3 generations after Jieun.

2. At some point in Grass’ history was a prince, whether in the past or the future.

The reason I say this is because of the timeline. Dandelion and Nameless have very explicit dates for when and where it takes place. Most of the time both take place on Earth in South Korea between the years 2012-2013. But Mystic Messenger is a big question mark. D & N’s years correspond with the year the games were released in. If we follow that pattern, then Mystic Messenger would have happened in 2016. The thing is, that is not confirmed in-game, and is just speculation. So, we can give the timeline some leeway. 

There are 3 possibilities for how Zen got sent to Earth:

1. Zen made a desperate wish to leave Grass: This is the sad option. Based on how we see Jihae be treated, especially if you get deeper into his backstory, Zen could have been neglected/verbally abused/etc. for his hair. The Wizard in Dandelion can grant any wish you desire, as long as that wish is desperate. If Zen arrived on Earth as a child, then the implications of that are even worse. In exchange for a wish, your memories relating to that wish are taken away. Perhaps his memories of Grass was the price and that’s why he doesn’t remember anything. The earliest memory we see in-game was from when he was studying with his older brother as a child when he was 7 years old.

2. Sorcerers from the royal family: They sent him to Earth as a child. I bring this up because, in Dandelion, travel between the planets was seen as impossible. Of course, with the exception of The Wizard and making a desperate wish. He was the one who brought the rabbit and cat boys to Earth, after all. BUT THEN, Jieun came in.

At the end of Jieun’s route, he gets separated from Heejung and has to go back to Grass. 3 years after, Heejung is summoned to Grass by a group of sorcerers Jieun got together (Whether they are actually other wizards is up for debate). Jieun overcame the odds. This is why I suggested that Zen is a prince 3 generations after Jieun. Perhaps this spell was tweaked to send Zen to Earth instead of the other way around. Going back to what I said before, if Zen is a prince 3 generations after Jieun, and got sent to Earth in South Korea specifically, then it can make sense why it happened. 3 generations down the line I think records would remain of a former king (Jieun) summoning a woman (Heejung) from another planet, and maybe Jieun documented his stay in South Korea. A portal dropping Zen in South Korea of all places on the planet could make sense from this angle. Maybe he had some protection spells cast on him (his random fast healing?) and maybe even his human family has been bewitched to believe he is their birth son? Maybe some member of the royal family orchestrated all of this for Zen’s sake, so that he can live a life free of judgment (didn’t quite work out but still). This is mostly conjecture though.

The details of how all of that would happen are up in the air.

3. Zen was unwillingly sent to Earth/MM universe(?) and is now trapped: I think this one needs an entire post by itself. This has to do with Saeyoung being a wizard and April Fool’s DLC stuff. This one is the one I believe in the most.

Nonetheless, I have brought up all the points why I believe Zen could be a prince from Grass. (Also lol Zen hated Jumin for being a trust-fund kid, but he could be a divine child blessed by god and is a bunny prince lmaoooo).

All dolls are magical, all them have mystical powers like being alive even being dolls, they have a soul.

Yuri makes everyone fall for him

Yeonho has sensitive powers, can see spirits, can talk with animals, can see the future with cards and make the women feels very protective around him

Oh my god I only just realised something whilst replaying the 2nd chapter of Red's route: in the scenes where Yeonho is watching tv with Red, he's probably not doing it because he wants to but because he has to. Yeonho sleeps on the couch. If Red wants to watch TV at 11 o'clock at night Yeonho ain't got a choice but to watch it with him cuz he ain't got nowhere else to go and nothing else to do!! He hasn't got any kind of private space all to himself because he just sleeps on the couch.

I made a little thing inspired from Yuri's rain scene in his route, which you may be able to tell is arguably my favourite scene in the whole game. I haven't written anything in at least 5 years so I am out of practise and this is kind of just a rough draft but I wanted to put this out there anyway, especially since the tag is so dead :3 I could've continued it a bit more and I might do but I like the place I left it.

Since its an au from my daydreams tho, the main character is different and there are themes of paranoia/trauma

I haven't titled yet but I guess I'll just call it Rain.

A long day at school meant a well-deserved lazy evening in bed. Faith could be found none other than under the covers, consumed by endless scrolling. Lights off and stomach full, a pause in the music from her headphones led Faith to notice her bedroom window. The curtains open, late September had turned the wind brutal and the skies dull. A thunderous sound accompanied the rioting of the orange leaves. It was raining. How long had she been in bed for exactly?

She sat up simply staring at the window for a moment, thanking no god in particular that she was safely indoors. Her thoughts hurried to the dolls, who were all out there somewhere, so she sent each a text to ask if they all had umbrellas. The thought of any of them being trapped in that havoc turned her stomach.

Before the bottled water could be raised to her lips came Lance's response. He was busy with his duties as the discipline guide and has already checked the weather forecast long in advance so the smartass had taken an umbrella when he left for school that morning. Who knows how many worst case scenarios he's already prepared a thousand solutions for?

Faith wasn't sure if the room had always been this chilly. The next reply came through as her head finally poked through the top of a fluffy white jumper: Tei apologised that he'd be home late from work again today, saying that the manager would lend him an umbrella. Yeonho was also dining at the cafe Tei worked at with some friends who offered to walk him home. Although Faith knew his friends to have overstepped a few boundaries, she trusted Yeonho wasn't so naive as to bring these people right to their doorstep. Maybe.

It was entertaining to mindlessly play with the settings on the bedside lamp. Bright and dim, flashing, fading, in and out. Forwards and backwards through the rainbow. Pink. Purple. Blue. Green. Yellow. Orange.

Red's reply came cheerily, explaining that the drama club members would walk home together, sharing coats and umbrellas and hats. It was cute the way he signed off with an emoji.

The droplets drummed against the glass, creating a methodical pattern of swirls and dots and lines. Fingers painted the transparent canvas with cats, dogs, stick men with top hats. The smiley face drooped and the whole artwork seemed to cry. Was the stick woman aware that her hair and her clothes and her body and her face were all crafted from tears and watery blackness?

The phone kept ringing. Perhaps if she kept ringing Yuri would reply eventually. Ringing and ringing and ringing. To admit, it wasn't strange for Yuri not to reply. He frequently came home late, spoke to strange women and showed off money from an unknown source. Everyone was used to his disappearances by now but Faith just couldn't shake the feeling that this might be the last time he disappears.

Time stood still yet raced ahead fast as light simultaneously. Pushing down those thoughts certainly wasn't an unfamiliar task, nor was it a pleasant one. Those thoughts of all the different ways you could lose everything you've ever loved all in the blink of an eye. Those thoughts of fighting, screaming, pleading, bleeding. Those thoughts of all the worst things happening all over again. Those thoughts of being left alone, all over again. All over again.

She turned the music up.

Escapism was the answer but it never lasted forever. Thoughts disappeared but feelings remained. Faith itched. She couldn't sit still. By the time the next song started, she found herself dressed at the door, armed with two umbrellas and a weapon.

Again, she welcomed the soft feelings of dread and anxiety, a dull ache she felt in her chest every time she went outside.

She turned the music up.

The rain didn't feel totally real, she thought, nestled under the clear round shelter of the umbrella. It was a small thing. Eyes fixed downwards at soaked feet, dodging hurriedly through roadside puddles. In truth, Faith wasn't even sure she could get to her destination if she was only staring downwards but this didn't seem to be a problem as her feet marched on determinedly, fully independent from the rest of her body.

Her world felt tiny, compressing, crushing her deep into herself. Distant from her body, she couldn't move, couldn't stop moving. Autonomous feet. Thoughts. Fear. Rain. Always rain.

She turned the music up.

Faith arrived at school. For a second, her body allowed herself to stop moving. She only noticed now that she was trembling all over. She left a damp trail up the stairs. It wasn't any warmer indoors.

Of all places, Yuri should be here. Pray to no god in particular if you're ever to look for him wherever the hell he goes to after school.

The volume couldn't possibly go up any higher. She turned the music up.

Uncertain of whether it was a good thing or a bad thing, Faith finally stood face to face with the music room door. She took her headphones off. The storm behind her hadn't calmed. She couldn't hear anything.

Is Yuri in that room? Maybe he is. Even if he is, what if he's not ok? Will opening this door welcome the sight of blood and tears and pain? Had Yuri gotten in a car accident on the way home? Was he mugged? Assaulted? Murdered? Kidnapped? All of the above?

This is stupid. That stuff didn't happen. Yuri's probably having the time of his life at a wild party right now. All this because of some rain? Seriously? It's just rain at the end of the day. There's only so much rain can do to you.

But if it's just rain then why isn't he answering? What could he possibly be doing with his phone on without answering the calls? It'd make more sense if he was at a party but considering the time, he couldn't have left school yet. Yuri is unpredictable and unexplainable but he takes his job as a teacher seriously and wouldn't be so irresponsible to run off and play.

He has to be in this room.

Frozen in place. What's beyond that door? Does Faith even want to see it? If she were so weak, she could go home right now, never to face the horrid truth awaiting. She could throw everything away, kill everyone and then herself, just to prevent them from witnessing the bloodbath shielded only by a plank of wood.

But what would be the point of coming? What's the point of thinking these thoughts if never to confirm their stupidity yourself? After all, whatever's beyond the door will still be there whether you witness it yourself or not.

There's no other choice. Gulping down a heaping portion of dread, Faith pushes open the door.

A tidal wave of relief morphs into shame. Warm golden light spills out, illuminating the scene of a man in an elegant black suit playing a grand piano against the rain's dreary dark backdrop. Slender fingers dance across white keys in precision, beautiful face caught in a focused expression, stopping every now and then to edit a page of sheet music. Peace.

An eternity passed by in a single second as Faith took in the view but she shied away from it to kneel off to the side where she couldn't be seen. The grip she holds on her weapon burns her hand. So stupid. Why is she here? She's lived in a much safer world now for so long yet she still isn't used to it.

No matter how much she fights for the present, the past can't change. She lost so much and still can't accept it.

A pause in the piano playing led Yuri to notice the open door. A quiet sound hid itself amongst the thunderous rioting of the rain. Someone was outside. How long had he been playing for exactly?

He turned the music off.

i am! i am enjoying it a lot! I’ve only gone through lance and yeonho’s endings so far and i haven’t really clicked with either of them (lance has my favourite design but he’s just not a character type i enjoy much, i don’t think!) but i am looking forward to doing tei’s route. I think he has some secrets he is keeping from me!!!

Nameless Route Review: Tei - Not the Barista of My Dreams

If you don’t know by now – SPOILERS! Fourth and penultimate in my Nameless route reviews is Tei: the kind, level-headed mother of the group. He stops fights between Red and Lance, encourages Yeonho, and makes even Yuri wary. He was a limited edition doll that, similar to Yeonho, was slightly damaged – and due to being a limited run, couldn’t really be repaired or replaced. I won’t get into too…

Cheritz Boys With Red Eyes Have Powers

Zen, Jieun, Red, and Yeonho all have red eyes. What else do they have in common? All of them have powers.

I went back to play Nameless: The One Thing You Must Recall since it’s been so many years since I first played it. I noticed something in the game that is also present in Dandelion and Mystic Messenger; Cheritz’s other games. This really isn’t a theory, just an observation since it's confirmed in-game that these characters have these powers.

Jieun (Dandelion):

Excuse the weird cropping, I messed up taking the screenshots lol. But Jieun is a prince from another planet called Grass, and he was gifted with the power to see the future at will. In the first screenshot we see him do this, while staring out at the sun. The wind picks up and flies everywhere as he’s seeing Heejung’s future. He can use this ability at will.

Yeonho (Nameless):

I forgot the full extent of his power, so I’m glad I went back to grab screenshots! Yeonho can not only see ghosts but talk to animals too! At the beginning of his route, he chases after a cat because he could hear it speak. Later on, Yeonho joins the fortune-telling club at his academy. He himself can’t see the future, but ghosts apparently can. In the last screenshot, he goes to see a ghost of an old man to show him the future while he is doing fortunes for the school festival.

Red (Nameless):

These screenshots are from the true route of the game. We find out that Red can sense Eri’s thoughts and feelings, and that is how all the doll boys find Eri in the finale when she goes missing.

Zen (Mystic Messenger):

And of course Zen. In the screenshots are 2 different examples of him displaying his ability to see the future in dreams. The first 2 screenshots are from the end of the casual story common route where he believes that the MC wasn’t real, which some would argue is true? I won’t go into that. It's possible to get the common bad ending route after this chat, where Yoosung starts talking about how everyone is a machine. Zen sees this in ending unfold in his dream! Jaehee and Zen find out from Yoosung that they are machines, and all hell breaks loose.

The rest of the screenshots are from Jumin’s route, where we see a VN of Zen. We actually see one of his dreams and he not only sees Elizabeth the 3rd, but Mint Eye’s palace in the mountains. He is confused by all this and then wakes up. There is no way Zen has ever been to Mint Eye in real life before having this dream since their headquarters are hidden in the mountains. Later on, Elizabeth the 3rd actually does go missing and ends up at Mint Eye. This example is the more blatant display of his power. Zen and Jieun’s power is the most similar compared to Red and Yeonho, which is interesting.

I just wanted to compile all of this into one place since I tend to forget how each boy’s power works.
