How do you think Jin Yan and Jin Wei first met? What do you think their opinions were on each other then?

Ooh, good question! I’m hoping that Dashing Youth will give some answers on that front, though there’s no guarantee, as I haven’t seen Jin Yan on the cast list yet. Granted, there’s a canonical reason he may be absent or only play a minor role: in the past, he was always spending time with his shifu, Zhuo Xin, while the other eunuchs followed Zhuo Qing. This led to Jin Yan being relatively isolated from them.

There are enough hints to Jin Yan’s past in the novel that I can paint a small picture of what it might have been like. In particular, there are two major pieces of information:

-in his youth, Jin Yan needed to run to survive

-without his shifu, he would have died long ago

That information, along with Jin Yan’s personality, gives me reason to believe that he used to be a thief. The dexterity of his fingers in the live-action certainly adds to that idea. Continuing in the realm of headcanon territory, I think Jin Yan became a eunuch after trying to steal from Zhuo Qing and getting saved by Zhuo Xin. The gold ornament hanging from Zhuo Qing’s belt looks incredibly stealable:

As for Jin Wei, Zhuo Qing saved his life when he was young, so his greatest loyalty is to him. He’s serious, devoted, and stubborn. He’s incredibly different from Jin Yan, and likely wouldn’t get along well with him initially. However, restraint is a major aspect of Jin Wei’s character in the novel and donghua, so he likely bottles up most of the negative emotions he may feel towards him. Meanwhile, just as Jin Yan bickers with Jin Xian, I could definitely imagine him getting immense joy out of annoying Jin Wei as well. There could definitely be a lot of tension between them, later complicated when they share the same goal (I won’t spoil anything, but Jin Wei’s major act of loyalty to Zhuo Qing seems a bit more premeditated in the novel).

thank you, anon :D I hope I'm not too late to this ask meme thing in the FGO fandom, because I will happily gush about Emiya Alter to anyone who asks. that man needs more love.

favorite thing about them just one? all right. Emiya Alter's gone through so much-to the point where it clearly had lasting & damaging effects on him-the nihilism, abysmally poor memory, self-destructive tendencies, etc etc. he's symbolic of the "Hero of Justice" role to its furthest ends, a "weapon" meant to be of service whilst his own identity is pretty much an afterthought. but he also dives for Melt, giving her the second chance he never had. he guides Ritsuka out of his own hellish mindscape, and gives them a tow cable-a lifeline-for a Valentine's gift. he assists Voyager in saving Erice, and there's at least one or two lines where he can relate to her being an agent of death. there's hope for him yet, even though he's reached his own tragic ending. his ideas of "help" can be messed up, obviously, but he's going out of his way to try if nothing else. moreover, he needs some peace of mind after basically going through hell and back.

least favorite thing about them his original JPN design, obviously. the racism surrounding it has become indelible and synonymous with his character. obviously we don't know for sure, but it would not surprise me to learn that the reason he's received little attention in Craft Essence art is because of the controversy surrounding his character.

favorite line "Don't apologize. Good intentions are like sandpaper." I've probably analyzed this line to death, but I believe it summarizes Emiya Alter perfectly: a man whose own charity and constant vigilance for justice has eaten away at him. at the same time, he tries to disregard his own state of being as if it's no big deal; however, since he does not perceive himself as human anymore, the outcome is a lot more distressing than perhaps he might expect.

brOTP maybe Assassin Kiritsugu? I know, I know, Kiritsugu's basically a father to Emiya, but Assassin diverged from his own path in Fate/Zero so I'm sure it's fine here. my other brOTP idea is of him secretly thinking Hijikata's swordmanship is cool, even if he can't understand why Hijikata's so hellbent on upholding the Shinsengumi all the time. I can also see Alter putting up with Tamamo Berserker's outrageous behaviour towards him in a "I can't stand this, but she won't stop and it'd be a waste of energy" kind of way, and it developing into a strange but heartwarming bond later on.

OTP Emiya Alter x Yan Qing. I've only seen one (1) piece of content about it on pixiv, but they've got enough similarities (being Shinjuku villain Servants and having identity issues) and differences (Alter's serious and to the point, forging weapons-while Yan Qing is more flippant in a laid-back manner, using his fists & feet as weapons) that I'd love to write a fic shipping the two of them.

nOTP apparently a few people have shipped Alter with Kiara, of all people. I'm also personally not very fond of the Emiya Alter x Jalter pairing.

unpopular opinion I love his edgelord behaviour. it's incredibly comical how cynical he gets (his brooding over board games in BGA comes too mind), which is part of the reason. but there's something that just hits in how played straight his character usually is, and how genuine the depths of his despair go.

favorite picture of them he doesn't have a lot of FGO art, but I've always loved Emiya Alter's Formal Dress CE. it's sleek, sharp and overall just...so cool-looking. the pinstripe suit brings his self-ascribed mercenary role to a focal point; such suits are typically worn in professional settings, natch. then there's the smaller details, like the gears on his tie and how the tie bar on it has a Chaldean symbol. I also appreciate how his grey polo shirt is strained, emphasizing his muscles and torso.

Can I request some separate headcanons for Yan Qing and Robin who have a female master, master can't sleep and wants a midnight snack so they take her out and break into like an ice cream shop or a cafe or a boba tea shop, you get the idea. And help themselves (aka steal) to a late night treat with their beloved master

It's hot as fuckin' shit. 90° F and it ends up that warm inside my grandmother's house. I survive on ice cream and ice packs. 

Master is having the worst time sleeping on a sweaty summer night. They're uncomfortably toasty and have a mighty need for sustenance. Yan Qing and Robin Hood come to the rescue. (Separately.)

Yan Qing

When Master asks Yan Qing for boba, he stops pacing mid-step. He turns to look at them. A look of confusion stretches across his face. There’s almost something comical about his apparent distress. 

He dramatically recalls a recent game of paintball he played with Billy the Kid and Arash. They went for a snack afterwards. Upon hearing a young woman order "boba," Billy hooked his arms around both men's shoulders and asked if they wanted "boba these nuts." Arash asked what this meant. Yan Qing pretended he didn't know. Billy was mortified.

Yan Qing has a vague idea of what boba tea is. It's far after his time, but he does like when cultural artifacts from his home gain popularity. It gives him a sense of nostalgic pride (and dissonance, because he is conflicted about Taiwan).

Master has to drag Yan Qing out of his riveting conversation with himself and also his other self. He puts up a fuss at first, busy arguing over whether or not "boba deez nuts" was offensive. Master convinces him that he'll have to try said boba before he can decide whether or not Billy's dumb comment was worth kicking his ass over. 

Unseeable, untouchable, he breaches the locally-owned cafe Master likes. Once inside he opens the back door for them to join him. There's a chill and a thrill that passes between Yan Qing and his Master. The satisfaction of doing something bad and getting away with it is overwhelming. 

First they have to do something bad, though. Neither of them is interested in the till or the safe. Stealing goods that are packed as a donation to a food bank would be gross. Taking ingredients back to Master's residence would leave them with armfuls of materials they couldn't effectively use. It seems they have no choice but to make their bubble tea on-site. 

Neither of them know how to make bubble tea. Master makes a face at this realization and Yan Qing cackles wildly at their misfortune. Thankfully they have the power of the internet and mobile data at their disposal. Master reads a few recipes and scans an article and Yan Qing looms over their shoulder as he so quickly catches up to their reading. 

The recipe, he thinks, should be easy enough. It would be easier if he’d ever made anything like it in his life. The tea is easy. Yan Qing can brew tea. He can brew tea with the best of ‘em. But what’s with the tapioca balls? Why are they so squishy? What is he supposed to do with them? He wants to juggle them, or throw them. It’s very distracting.

Master pulls him out of his daze. They instruct him to brew the tea while they take care of everything else. Black tea is the common tea for boba, according to the page Master has pulled up on their phone. Yan Qing is not in the mood for black tea. He also doesn’t think iced coffee is appropriate at this hour. Chai tea, maybe? He likes chai tea lattes with soy milk. Milk isn’t necessary for one’s health, did you know, Master? There’s a conspiracy afoot in big dairy where decades have gone to advertising milk to produce more profits than—

Perhaps Yan Qing should acquire different friends.

Robin Hood

Master hobbles out of their sleeping quarters at about 05:00. Robin Hood is kicked back waiting for the sun to rise. When Master shuffles over to him, he nearly jumps out of his skin. Nobody needs to exist this early. 

It appears Master cannot sleep, for Master has a mighty need that must be met: the need to fuckin' chill. They're hungry and whiny from being stuck unable to sleep all night. The likelihood of agitation in the morrow is too damn high. 

This is not what Robin is contracted with his Master for, but he has a feeling this isn't the weirdest or least convenient thing they're ever going to ask of him. 

Under normal circumstances, Robin would prefer to support a local stand or shop that makes and serves their own ice cream. He likes when the worker is connected to the output of their labor–when they own the means of production, as it were. This in mind, the logical course of action is for Robin to hit up Corporate Ice Cream Chain Location for Master's favorites. 

He must correct himself on that, because Robin doesn't like calling…whatever-it-is Corporate Ice Cream sells "ice cream." It is "frozen dairy dessert" or something like it. It could be neither frozen, nor dairy, nor dessert, and still labeled as ice cream. 

After a quick trip riding Robin's back like a sleepy koala, Master is sat down on the roof of Corporate Ice Cream Chain Location. He props them against the nearest clean-ish looking brick structure. While they listen to birds sing to sunrise (tweet tweet food caw caw sex), Robin condenses himself into spirit form and sprinkles into the building. 

The weak security warrants no effort. He isn't surprised by how little there is. Between his cloak and the incompetence of the camera setup, Robin can say quite comfortably nobody is going to see him on the recordings.

Corporate Ice Cream's backrooms are dismal. They're pitch black save for blinking lights on whirring machines with ominous silhouettes. Robin is definitely not scared, but he is unsettled. It helps that he has Darkvision like any shifty rogue worth his salt. Super Secret Agent Spy music plays in his head. It's a playful tune from a movie he watched with Master. It makes him feel dangerous and sexy. 

The current conditions are not dangerous, and they are also not sexy. It's cold as shit (a pleasant contrast to the outdoors, which are currently hot as shit) and that's about it.

Robin almost feels bad for potentially ruining some minimum wage worker's day. Almost. But he chose this location because it's an act against their employer. It's not his fault they're hostages under the milky boot of corporate ice cream. 

He returns to the roof with four white plastic tubs with frost on the sides. He tries to peek around them and fails. Master takes two of them, and together they escape back to their base of operations.

How would Lancer Cu, Astolfo, Yan Qing, Diarmuid and Rider Medusa react to learning that thier Master LOVES massages and being rubbed, her head specifically is her favorite spot to be rubbed/massaged! I've always had a hc that Cu is super good at giving massages his warm hands also help with that.

Yan Qing is rather considerate when it comes to your feelings. Sure, there are times where it seems like all he cares about is himself and his own interests, yet no one can deny the fact that when it comes down to what makes him happy vs what makes you happy, he’ll always choose your happiness over his. So even if he wasn’t too adjusted to your affections, he quickly got used to it.

In the beginning, he wasn’t sure if you were this affectionate naturally, or simply because you had thought he would like it more if you were more affectionate. He wasn’t sure why you were always so happy to hold his hand, but he was more than happy to comply if it would keep the smile on your face.

Over time, he got used to your affections and often pampered you with his own acts of affection. He knew you liked being back hugged and he’d always surprise you with one after you came back from a mission.

Although when it came to physical affection, you’d never lose. You were always the one to initiate the hand holding, the hugs, and even the quick surprise kisses that would completely catch him off guard and leave him a sputtering mess for a few lingering moments after the fact.

Though the most embarrassing thing for him was probably the first time you offered to spoon feed him. He was so flustered and confused with your actions, but thankfully he was able to get used to it. He doesn’t mind it so much now, but there are times where he does find it a bit embarrassing and would prefer you not to do so, but ultimately, he cannot win against you and has no choice but to let you do as you please.

Alright i have feelings about yby and romance now goddammit

So, in my last meta ask about Bingyun & Shen Wan’er’s relationship, I mentioned that I’m projecting my demiromanticism onto Bingyun because this is fanfiction and canon is my playground. I’ve found I have too many thoughts about it now and they want to be released. (I’m also avoiding breathe au lol)

Alright, so the specific aside from the Shen sibs & yby meta is as follows: 

(I’m going to project a little bit here and say that my Yan Bingyun is on the aromantic spectrum. Demi-aro, more specifically.) 

This is simply being added so that you all don’t have to go dig through the 900+ words of that meta looking for it. The paragraph I slipped it into was mostly about yby & sxj’s friendship before he realized what the hell a romantic feeling was and before she realized he does love her back, actually. (Spoiler, he gets captured before they figure it out.) Also, I mistyped there. I really meant demiromantic. Demi-aro implies that he’s demisexual and aromantic, which is untrue to my Yan Bingyun. My yby is demiromantic and demisexual.

Disclaimers: 

I would like to remind everyone before we start that my portrayal of Yan Bingyun’s demi-romanticism is based very heavily in my own experiences, and those experiences are NOT universal. Other aro/ace-spectrum ppl’s experiences will be different from mine and that is okay.

Future fantasy china is very heteronormative, so I don’t mention the fact that yby could in fact fall in love with a boy as well. If shen wan’er had been a boy, he still would have fallen in love.

Yan Bingyun is not demi-romantic because of the way he was raised. He would have been demi-romantic even if he’d grown up being told that romance is perfectly healthy and is integral to the mission.

The meta itself is under the cut

Yan Bingyun is raised in the Overwatch Council, raised to be the perfect DaQing spymaster to serve the emperor and his successors until he outlives his usefulness.

He is 12 years old and his teachers tell him that outside attachments like romantic interests are bad because they distract from the mission. Okay, Yan Bingyun thinks. I just won’t fall in love. 

He is 14 and he watches as a boy three years older than him is punished for using an outside income in order to buy the freedom of a prostitute he knocked up. Outside attachments are distractions, Yan Bingyun thinks. He had it coming.

He is 16 and he is promoted to a high position in the fourth bureau. He meets Teng Zijing who is only here because he wants to protect his wife and son. Yan Bingyun is told to not let Teng Zijing know anything about his family, so he doesn’t. It’s to strengthen your resolve and increase your loyalty to DaQing, he tells Teng Zijing when pressed. As far as Yan Bingyun is concerned, it works. Teng Zijing never asks Yan Bingyun about his family again.

He is 18 and his father begins to speak of making a politically sound match between Yan Bingyun and a nobleman’s daughter. Is there a specific girl you have in mind? Yan Ruohai asks. Yan Bingyun doesn’t understand why he must love someone to marry. He doesn’t see the point. His match must be advantageous for himself and his father so that he can better serve DaQing. His personal feelings on the subject--that is, if he had any in the first place--don’t matter.

He is 20 and his father tells him not to fall in love with a foreign girl while he is stationed in BeiQi and Bingyun listens intently because that is how he’s been trained. He does not intend to fall in love. He doesn’t think himself capable. He leaves for BeiQi, holds Fan Xian at swordpoint for killing a trusted underling, changes his name to Yun-gongzi, and settles down in the upper ring of Shangjing, ready to spy. Romance is the last thing on his mind.

Then he meets Shen Wan’er.

(Shen Wan’er is proving to be the crux of Bingyun’s downfall isn’t she. I’ve used that phrase twice in as many metas about different topics.)

Yan Bingyun definitely starts out just using Shen Wan’er. He uses her for information, but slowly, Bingyun becomes friends with Shen Wan’er. He gets to know her, and then he starts to fall in love. 

This poor boy has never seen any semblance of a healthy relationship before. He’s got no idea wtf a feeling is. So I hc that when he first realizes that he feels something for her, he has a breakdown in his washroom that night. (Listen, he’s 20 years old, falling in love for the first time with a girl that he is specifically not allowed to have because she is from BeiQi, and he is under a lot of stress, okay? Him not having a breakdown would be weirder than him having one.)

At no point in canon is his relationship with Shen Wan’er healthy. He is always using her in some way before he’s captured, and he is manipulative and abusive towards her after he’s captured. Part of this can be accredited to the fact that it has been drilled into his head since he was young that kindness is weakness is bad, and part of it is that he just fundamentally doesn’t understand what healthy is. What frame of reference would he have to a healthy relationship?

As he is falling in love, his relationship with Shen Wan’er gradually gets healthier, because he isn’t using her as much. He’s starting to genuinely like her. He never forgets his mission; how could he? But he does let himself relax the smallest amount with her. He wears two masks instead of three. And then he’s discovered, and he thinks, this is comeuppance. I fell in love. It’s karma. 

He disregards the fact that this is not how karma works. 

He doesn’t quite have the ability to be in love while he is captured. He doesn’t really have the ability to do much other than hold. Most of his personhood is focused on not giving up the spy network. The other portion is focused on pushing Shen Wan’er away, because if he reveals that he likes her, then he will be compromised. Nevermind the fact that if he truly didn’t love her, he would continue using her.

He’s part of the Overwatch Council, and those of Overwatch don’t have a heart. He can’t love her. He’s unable to do so.

After he’s rescued, he is still mostly in survival mode. He doesn’t have the time to sit down and examine his feelings. So he continues to push Shen Wan’er away, even if it breaks his heart. After the scene where he tells her to kill her brother, his faces are so devastating (xiao zhan, my friends, is a goddamned brilliant actor)

Then we get this heartbreaking exchange that fueled this entire 1000+ word meta.

Yan Bingyun: What’s your point?

I included both just so that I could put in the one I watched first (youtube) because that devastated me even with its horrible grammar, and then I got Viki and watched again and goddamn did I catch feelings.

Anyway, back to Yan Bingyun.

He’s grown up being taught directly and indirectly that feelings are bad, to the point where he wholeheartedly believes it. He really believes that he doesn’t have a heart, or that he can simply excise the small one he’s grown for Shen Wan’er if he tries enough. Obviously, this is not true. We all know this. Points for trying, Bingyun, but you misunderstand feelings.

It’s not your fault. Overwatch really fucked you up. But don’t worry, hon. You’ll get to heal a little bit in fanfiction.

I’m supposed to be heading off to classes but I’ve researched and learned things about Yan Qing that I just wanted to share here. 

So the guy’s a womaniser and prodigy, who’s said to be really good in theatrical arts and... well, in bed. To the point where, in order to get his superior a meeting with the Emperor, he visited a courtesan whom the Emperor was having an affair with. This courtesan, Li Shi Shi, really liked him and tried to seduce him by asking to see his tattoos- but, he refused her advances. In the book, he says, “if a real man forgets his principles because of wine and women, then he is no better than a beast. May I be cut into pieces by ten thousand swords if I had this intention.”

In order to not insult Li Shi Shi, rather than accepting her advances, he asks to become her sworn brother- and from this relationship, he gains a meeting with the Emperor for his Lord.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this, I just wanted to share that this is the kind of guy that Yan Qing is ahaha
