What was the effect of Dungeons & Dragons on society?

            When people think about the table-top game Dungeons & Dragons, many things might come to mind. Some may think about their favorite D&D podcast or recorded campaigns, while others may just imagine it as that nerdy game from Stranger Things. Either way, Dungeons & Dragons has become a topic of the public’s interest over the years. The game is renowned for its ability to bring people together through the process of world building and imagination. According to Denis Storey from Psychiatrist.Com, “The game’s collaborative and creative nature fosters a sense of control and emotional connection, helping players deal with real-life feelings of powerlessness” (par. 1). The platform of the game gives a reason for people to meet, and keep meeting, for hours on end and bond over their collaborative stories. That kind of human connection over shared creativity is difficult to emulate elsewhere.

            Although D&D started as a niche hobby, confined to people’s basements, it gradually started to take off in the table-top community. “Within its first decade, D&D sales soared to more than $16 million a year” (Smithsonian Magazine, par. 5). The game was spreading through game tables and comic stores with a cult-like following. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the game and has acquired around 12 variants, with more likely on the way. With all this success, Dungeons & Dragons went on to breach the medium of paper and pencil, inspiring many different forms of media.

For most, the fact that it got its own movie alone would be enough to solidify its standing in the public consciousness, but its reach extends far past that. The “Baldur’s Gate” series is a video game franchise based on the lore of the most common setting of D&D, the “Forgotten Realms”. In the past few years, the franchise has gone on to partner with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro (the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons domain) and create their third installment, a game aptly titled “Baldur’s Gate 3”. This game uses most of the mechanics of 5th edition D&D and follows the lore of the forgotten realms and expands on it in a way that rivals the game itself, with hundreds of different story paths and unique options. All of this to say, this game is highly derived from Dungeons & Dragons, which makes it even more influential that in 2023, “Baldur’s Gate 3” was the first to be named Game of the Year in all five major video game award shows. D&D’s impact on the way we interact with, and view media and role-playing games (RPGs) as a whole is far greater than it seems from the surface.

Step 4: Reflection

I realized far too late that my writing about the video game Baldur’s Gate 3 was getting far longer than my first paragraph, so I had to split the second paragraph in two (I really like that game). I also really like Dungeons & Dragons and feel that translated very transparently in my writing. The language I used was formal enough to be recognizable as an intellectual source, while still being familiar enough to be welcoming to my target audience (people who like video/table-top games and want to know more about them). I apologize profusely if the paragraphs are longwinded and all-over-the-place, this topic is extremely interesting to me and is very close to my heart. :D

Today President Joe Biden pardoned more than 2000 former military personnel who had been convicted of engaging in consensual sex under a gay sex ban in the military that has since been repealed. People covered under the pardon can apply to have their military discharges corrected and to recover the pay and benefits the convictions cost them. “[M]aintaining the finest fighting force in the world…means making sure that every member of our military feels safe and respected,” Biden said in a statement. 

Biden said he was “righting an historic wrong.” “This is about dignity, decency, and ensuring the culture of our Armed Forces reflect the values that make us an exceptional nation,” he said.

On this date in 2015, the Supreme Court handed down the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which said that states must license and recognize same-sex marriage because of the Fourteenth Amendment’s requirement that citizens must have the equal protection of the laws and cannot be deprived of rights without due process of the laws.  

In the New York Times today, Kate Zernike explained how the public conversations about abortion have shifted in the two years since the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized the constitutional right to abortion. The state bans that went into place have illustrated that abortion is indeed healthcare, as people suffering miscarriages have been unable to obtain the imperative medical care they need. 

Zernike quoted pollster Tresa Undem, who estimated that before the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturned Roe, less than 15% of Americans thought that abortion was relevant to them personally. Now, though, Undem said, “it’s about pregnancy, and everybody knows someone who had a baby or wants to have a baby or might get pregnant. It’s profoundly personal to a majority of the public.”

In the three weeks since Biden announced restrictions on asylum applications for undocumented immigrants, the number of people trying to cross the border has dropped more than 40% to its lowest level since he took office. This information will likely come up in tomorrow’s scheduled debate between the president and presumptive Republican nominee Trump, who has made it clear he intends to accuse the president of promoting immigration policies that bring criminals into the United States.

Former representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a military veteran who joined the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol and who has fiercely criticized Trump, today endorsed Biden for president. 

In a video, Kinzinger said: “[W]hile I certainly don’t agree with President Biden on everything, and I never thought I’d be endorsing a Democrat for president, I know that he will always protect the very thing that makes America the best country in the world: our democracy. Donald Trump poses a direct threat to every fundamental American value. He doesn’t care about our country. He doesn’t care about you. He only cares about himself. And he’ll hurt anyone or anything in pursuit of power.” 

On CNN tonight, Georgia governor Brian Kemp told Kaitlan Collins he did not vote for Trump in his state’s Republican primary, although he said he would “support the ticket” in November so that Georgia would remain in Republican hands. It was an interesting statement, since he could easily have deflected the question or simply said he voted for Trump if he cared about avoiding Trump’s wrath. But he appeared not to care, suggesting that Trump’s power even with prominent Republicans is slipping. 

Two Republican voters from Pennsylvania told MSNBC tonight that they are voting for Biden. When asked whether they think there is “a silent Biden voter out there,” one said, “I do. I know there is…. We don’t want to talk about it, but we’re all going to vote for Joe Biden.” 

By a 6–3 vote, the Supreme Court today blessed the practice of taking “gratuities” as a gift for past behavior by an official, distinguishing them from “bribes,” which require proof that there was an illegal deal in place. The case involved a former mayor from Indiana who helped a local truck dealership win $1.1 million in city contracts and then asked for and received $13,000 from the dealership’s owners. The mayor was found guilty of violating a federal anti-corruption law that prohibits state and local officials from taking gifts worth more than $5,000 from someone the official had helped to land lucrative government business.

For the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that the law prohibited officials from accepting “gift cards, lunches, plaques, books, framed photos or the like” in thanks for an official’s help, although David G. Savage of the Los Angeles Times noted that the law came into play only when the gift was worth more than $5,000. 

Savage pointed out that as the federal law in question covers about 20 million state and local officials, the decision could have wide impact. This decision that officials can accept “gifts” so long as they are not “bribes” might have something to do with the fact that Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have accepted significant gifts from donors—Thomas’s count is upward of $4 million—and it doesn’t relieve the sense that this Supreme Court, with its three right-wing Trump-appointed justices, is untrustworthy.

Writing for justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and herself, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said, “Officials who use their public positions for private gain threaten the integrity of our most important institutions.” 

Yesterday, House Republicans released draft legislation to fund the Justice Department and the Commerce Departments for fiscal year 2025, which starts October 1. They propose to slash nearly a billion dollars from the Department of Justice in retaliation for its bringing cases against Trump, and both to cut funding for the FBI and to block the construction of its new headquarters. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the cuts “unacceptable” and said that the “effort to defund the Justice Department and its essential law enforcement functions will make our fight against violent crime all the more difficult.”

In a secret vote yesterday  by a House panel that fell along party lines, House Republicans also agreed to say that the last Congress’s construction of the January 6th committee was invalid and illegal. This enabled them to back a last-ditch effort by Trump ally Steve Bannon to stay out of jail. After Bannon refused to respond to the committee’s subpoena for documents and testimony about the January 6 attack, a jury found him guilty of being in contempt of Congress. 

Today, Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) filed a brief with the Supreme Court saying that Bannon was right to ignore the subpoena because the committee was illegally organized. Politico’s Kyle Cheney pointed out that the lawyer for the brief is not a House lawyer but rather comes from America First Legal, a public interest organization put together by Trump loyalist Stephen Miller to challenge the legal efforts to rein in Trump’s orders when in office. 

Finally, Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer reported in The Recombobulation Area today that event bookings expected for the week of the Republican National Convention, which is set to begin on July 15, four days after Judge Juan Merchan sentences Trump for his 34 criminal convictions, have not materialized. Estimates were that the convention would bring $200 million in economic impact to Milwaukee, but that now appears to be optimistic. “[This is] certainly nothing like we were told or promised,” chef Gregory León told Shafer. With locals staying home to avoid the downtown area during the convention, “[i]f the [reservation] book stays the way it is, we’re not going to make enough money to cover costs.”

Kanao: Did Tanjiro Give Her A Weakness?

Kanao already reached the Tsuchinoto rank (5th of 10) within about 1.5 months* of passing the Final Selection but then only progressed to Hinoto (7th of 10) over the following 10 months or so.* Why the slow-down? I've got a handful of possible ideas but no indication of if any of them would be true. *(According to my timeline estimates.)

In the extra chapter in Volume 7 about all the suffering in Kanao's past, Kanao snaps. All of a sudden, she stops feeling anything. She doesn't think for herself at all, only doing things as she's told.

According to the Taisho Secret at the end of Chapter 163, Kanao learned Flower Breathing by observation, though neither Kanae or Shinobu approved of this. She entered the Final Selection without permission. Although, as Tanjiro puts it, the voice of Kanao's heart is very small, Kanao had a growing sense that she couldn't forgive demons for how they orphaned her housemates and took Shinobu's parents, sister, and Tsuguko from her. Straight from Word of God-touge, fighting demons is Kanao's will. However, Shinobu at first worries that it's not really something Kanao felt that deeply about, and admonishes her simply to not falter or overthink things, and just cut off demon's heads. I suspect she declared Kanao her Tsuguko immediately as a means of keeping an eye on her, and that she had to enforce a professional distance that she otherwise never would had wanted to impose on Kanao. I suspect that Kanao did not only observe Kanae; Shinobu may very well have had other Flower Breath users among her Tsuguko. We don't know how involved the Tsuguko were in the Butterfly Mansion household; I suspect there was a bit of professional emotional distance, seeing as how Kanao goes from referring to Shinobu as her sister to referring to her as her master. None of the other Butterfly Mansion girls ever use such close terms of endearment to Shinobu. Although Kanao did enter the Corp of her own accord (feeling nothing, except perhaps "demons are bad, I should get rid of them"), she still is in a pretty broken, unfeeling state. When she's not on missions or training, she's content to sit somewhere and stare off into the sun (Kanao, your eyes, take care of your precious eyes!!). And since she doesn't need to think about anything besides cutting off demon heads, and she doesn't mind any fear or suffering, she probably goes about her missions in a manner similar to how Muichiro did in that whirlwind two-month journey to becoming a Pillar. The "I don't care (but actually I just hate you)" method of demon slaying, apparently pretty effective. While we don't know how the rate of climbing the ranks is calculated, I suspect that Flower Breathing stresses evasion (see here and here), so Kanao likely doesn’t spend at much time down with injury, and therefore she took a lot more missions. And, being in a Pillar’s household, she might have had a Nichirin blade she could use right away to start taking missions while hers was being made, giving her at least a 10-day leg up on the others in her Final Selection batch. Likewise, being in the company of a Pillar, she’s probably gone straight into fighting higher level demons. And who knows? Maybe being declared a Tsuguko also adds to rank? But then Tanjiro turns her world upside-down at the flip of a coin, like how Shinobu throwing coins around a bridge changed her life years before. And, little by little, the voice of Kanao's heart starts growing stronger. While before Kanao was happy to simply stare off at the sun, Fanbook #1 tells us she's started looking at the world around her afresh. Bubbles!! Blowing bubbles is her new hobby. And she might not be good at treating injuries, but she goes on errands now for the Butterfly Mansion and likes bringing back candy and other small gifts for everyone. Look, it's even fun to poke the paw pads on cats! Beans! (Seeing as Shinobu doesn't like furry creatures (yet somehow puts up with Inosuke), Kanao probably only interacts with cats on her errands, and I'll bet Shinobu and Aoi both stay on pins and needles wondering what's taking her so long out there on her own). Kanao's even started to try helping with cooking! In one of the light novels, we see her go to Aoi for help, asking her to teach her new recipes. And, a few months into this bright new outlook on the world where she actually takes and interest in things and forms her own opinions, the Uzui Incident happens, and Kanao, at least by Kanao's standards, flamboyantly stands up to him. It was a terrifyingly bigger and more complicated decision than she's ever faced in battle. So here's a question:

Can a Corp member be

punished for anything by being downgraded a rank? Was there any repercussion to interfering with a Pillar's demon slaying mission? That might explain some of the sudden slow-down in Kanao's dramatic rate of promotion. What might also be possible is that a different Pillar, Shinobu, was concerned about the speed with which she advanced, especially seeing how emotionally stunted Muichiro was despite his skills, and how he wound up in more and more dangerous situations because of his rank. Even if Shinobu recognizes (perhaps with some surprise) that Kanao is innately talented, she's no genius, and she can't simply survive by cutting off heads as she climbs the ranks. Shinobu perhaps puts her foot down against Kanao's advancement to make sure there is time to focus on other aspects Kanao needs to mature in, and Oyakata-sama would probably be pretty understanding of that. This sort of request may be allowed purely because of the nature of the Hashira-Tsuguko relationship, regardless of the reason, who knows. But what it also might be is that as Kanao starts feeling things, she starts feeling all the things. Whereas before she might never had cared enough to be affected by fear or pain or sadness or weariness, just as she's seeing the simple tiny pleasures of life with fresh eyes, perhaps she's lost the natural armor she had against these other feelings. And, given the reasons why she snapped in the first place, it may be an especially confusing process for her to have to deal with these negative feelings in a healthier way. That's got to have a negative impact on her effectiveness in battle, and if it ever breaks her focus (though I don't see any evidence of this ever happening), it could be something that leads to injuries, which would decrease her number of missions (but, given her mastery of Breath technique and Functional Recovery Training, she's probably quick to recover). Even if Kanao doesn't get to the point of having breakdowns, people like Shinobu and Oyakata-sama would be keen enough of her development as a person that they might slow down how often she's assigned missions, as she requires that time to work at her new interests and becoming a more whole person. They've probably been watching over her without her even being aware of it, and as Shinobu perhaps devotes more and more time to her research, Kanao supposes that's the reason for her own slow-down in missions. If Master is busy, then the Tsuguko should merely help out and keep training. And it's not as if Kanao enjoys slaying demons; she's probably happily distracted with all these new things she finds she enjoys. She's probably never cared about promotion anyway. But, would Kanao have blown through the ranks if Tanjiro hadn't unwittingly derailed her so dramatically?

As an aside, the aforementioned Taisho Secret also states that Kanao joined the Corp because unlike Aoi, she wasn't good at treating injuries. Yet in the extended epilogue comic in Fanbook #2 Tanjiro says she's a fantastic doctor??? Hmm???? When?? How????? Can she see well enough to administer medicine safely?? Umm? Aoi? Please supervise her???? No offense, Kanao, but--where---did--this--come--from???????

"You are freaking me out😳, Hondje, what's with the sudden change in your attitude🤨🤔?", Theo asked, glaring at you, his tone extremely suspicious👀. You turned to look at him😍 and he let out a horror scream😱, "BROER😱!". Cue-Vincent and Arthur: R.I.P ears🙉. "HONDJE! WHAT THE HELL😱! DON'T BRING THAT THING CLOSE TO ME! KEEP THAT AWAY😱!", Theo shrieked as you stepped closer towards him😈. You held a very beautiful and adorable white cat right infront of his face😏😻. "Promise me you would stop treating me like a dog😏🐕!", you grinned mischievously as you brought the cat more closer towards him😻. "THAT'S NEVER HAPPENING😱! BROER🗣!", Theo nearly burst into tears😢 as he ran away from you as you gave him a long chase🏃🏻‍♂️😻👈🏻🏃🏻‍♀️. Cue-Arthur wheezing hard🤣💯 and Vincent shaking his head, facepalming🤦🏻‍♂️ and letting out a worried smile😅.

"I will never forgive you, Hondje😡!", Theo said glaring at you, extremely infuriated. "I am extremely sorry I took it too far🙇🏻‍♀️, I was merely teasing you🤷🏻‍♀️, pleaseee💗! I will make you load of pancakes🥞 and help you in your work tomorrow😍💯💗🥺!", you pleaded him trying to seek forgiveness of your friend💗. "Theo, she didn't mean it in a bad way🤷🏻‍♂️, please forgive her☺️!", said Vincent trying to convince his brother with a very soft smile💗🤗. Theo sighed hearing his brother's words and nodded "Fine😌!". "Thank you Theo💛☺️!", you smiled extremely relieved. "Honestly Theo, you are such a baby🤣🤣!", Arthur was laughing remembering that comical chase. "Shut up! I will wipe that stupid smile off your face right now😡👊🏻!", Theo said angrily grabbing his collar again. "Theo, calm down🤨!" "Yes, broer🙇🏻‍♂️!".

As you all were walking on the road of Paris, you spotted a small girl crying👧🏻😭. "What happened dear? Why are you crying😥?", you went over to him and get down to match her height as the three men came behind you, their faces showing extreme concern for the little girl🤔😥. "I am lost😭!", the girl wailed as you wrapped her in your embrace🤗💗. "Little girl👧🏻, you are with me, you will found your mommy very soon💯💗😍! Happy😏🕵🏻‍♂️?", Arthur said with a very gentle smile trying to cheer the girl up by wiping her tears🥰🤗. "Yes, this extremely stupid man is good in these cases😏!", Theo commented. You tried to stifle your laughter hearing his words🤭. "Theo, you are a devil👿, was that an compliment or an insult🤨😒?", Arthur asked, frowning at him😩. "Stop, you will make me blush🥰, the choice is yours for the question😎💯😏", Theo replied with a smirk which made the little girl laugh🤣 making everyone relaxed🥰💗. "Now, sweet little girl👧🏻, tell me everything🕵🏻‍♂️!", Arthur asked her about the details. Taking all clues into consideration, he found her mother in no time🕵🏻‍♂️💯😎. The little girl was so happy after finding her mother😍👩‍👧, she threw her arms around him and kissed on his cheek😘🤗💗. "Thank you so much, Mr.Detective🕵🏻‍♂️💯!", the girl said with a cheerful voice😍. You melted at the sight of Arthur's face wearing a very gentle smile and his eyes moist🥺 & shining with happiness✨💗. Theo and Vincent smiled happily standing besides each other seeing the little girl reunite with her mother👩‍👧, they nodded at each other happily😍👬.

You all went to the park to eat the delicious lunch made by Sebastian💗😍🥰. "Delicious😋💗💯✨!", you exclaimed happily while eating the food. Theo, Vincent and Arthur nodded👍🏻, enjoying themselves in the garden filled with various colourful flowers including sunflowers🌻🌹🌸🌷. Arthur lay down on your lap while you comb through his hair using your fingers, smiling gently at him🥰😍💗 while he let out an extremely satisfied sigh with his eyes closed😍💗. On the other hand, Theo was already sleeping on Vincent's lap😴 while he draws happily on his sketchbook with a soft smile on his face🎨🖼👨‍🎨💗😍. Even Arthur fell asleep when you were caressing his hair with utmost love😴💗. "They both looks so adorable, don't they Vincent😍💗🤭?", you asked murmuring happily. "Yes, I love them💗! I love you, broer💗!", he couldn't stop himself from crying😭 and hugged Vincent tightly making him stumble back a little🤗💗. "Waaah! Theo! Hehehe! I love you too💗😆🥰🤗😇!", Vincent giggled as he rubbed his back gently as his younger brother cried😭😭. You and Arthur looked at each other👫🏻 and smiled at them happily🥰. "You looked adorable while crying��!", Arthur said giggling. "I was not crying😒! I will kill you😡!", Theo replied glaring at him. You all would go to various shops with Vincent and Theo purchasing all the art materials🖼🎨👨🏻‍🎨💗🥰 while you would have to dragged pouting Arthur☹ away from purchasing too expensive items❌🙅🏻‍♀️. "Arthur, noooo!" "Dove, pleaseee💗🥺" "Noooo🙅🏻‍♀️". Vincent shook his head, smiling gently🥰💛 while Theo grins like a sadist seeing Arthur's misery😏😂👍🏻. Theo: Noo👁👄👁! Finally you settled on a very beautiful floral dress 🥀 as a gift from Arthur for always working hard, taking care of everyone💯😍 and for just simply loving him💗😍😘 👗. He was smiling like he won everything in the world after you accepted his gift😍💗🥰💛😘🤗. Even you gifted him a ink pen, which made him extremely happy💗😍🕺🏻🤗💛💯.

You all went to the cafe to enjoy drinks🍻💗🎉🎊 & chat over random topics😂😏😒🥰 when Theo and Arthur drank too much🥃. "I loveeeee MC so much💗🥰~!! She is so adorableeee~😍😘🤗🎶! Ah, my heart can't stay calm💓! Even Vincent couldn't stop blushing furiously hearing Theo's words of appreciation for him😍😳🙈💗🥰. "You both are so adorable🤣🤣💗💗!", Vincent chuckled at both of them happily. Arthur and Theo hugged you and Vincent🤗💗 respectively while you both were dragging them outside on their feet infront of so many people🤣👥🤣. "Are you okay there, MC😯? Shall I help you with Arthur🤔?", Vincent asked helping Theo to walk with extreme ease strong angel😇💪🏻😎💯. "I am but he is 💯 times more clingy right now as compared to when he is sober though he is so cuteee🥰🤗🤣💗😍!", you said while giggling and poking his cheek😍😘🤣 while his arm was wrapped around your shoulder as he staggered😌 but you held him properly💗💯😍. You helped Arthur to get into the bed while he was still singing praises about you in his dreamlike state, "You are so precious to me, MC💗👸🏻😍", Arthur said with a very happy smile💗💯🎶😍. You smiled giddily as you put the covers over him while he pulled you in the bed😱 and wraps his arms around you gently, your head on his strong chest💗🎶💯, you stayed there❣, in his comforting warmth🥰💗, listening to his heartbeat💓💯🎶😍, when he whispers in a sleepy tone, "Sleep well my dear, luv..zzzz...😍💗😴!", Arthur said with a sleepy and gentle tone as he fell deep asleep😴💗. "Hehehe🤭💗, you too, dear Arthur😍💗😘🥰!", you kissed him on his cheek😘 as you drifted off to sleep as well💗😴.

i took break from my nightly wendy's treat. i took this break for a w hile , as a way to recover from having acid hole. and saw recovery and even started eatig yogurt snack. went as far as to told that doctor he better have deleted that picture i sent him. no answer, i know i got it though it said delivered. stupid quack. i ben strong while battlening temptation. whenever i check my mail i skip to the coupons and look for wendy's deals. but i just look, not use... then my baba Olya come for visit. baba Olya loves the fast food. she always tell me "oh little sun you look so skinny, you no eating no more?" and i like yes baba i have been on the seafood diet, i see foods i eat it . We laugh but then later she sees the coupons and tell me get in car she will drive. She got vanilla frosty, and i got i got a triple burbon bacon cheeseburger and fries and a dave double.
