Hi! Could you please write a one shot with Helen McCrory's character Frankie from Flying Blind? I was thinking about Frankie x fem!reader, the reader is her assistant (either at work for military or at uni) and they are in a relationship but it's not official because of the fact that she is her superior at work and its not allowed (but they live together tho ;D) and well they got carried away with each other in the place of work and are almost cought in the act by someone who is not suppose to know about them being together... idk if i wrote it understandably... either way thank you for the opportunity to make a request for this one shot!! take care <3

It had all begun when she interviewed you as the position of her assistant. Working for the British airforce came with stress, and with stress came disorganization, and with disorganization came the need for an assistant. You had no interest in going into the military field, your internships being for lawyers. But those internships always ended in you only getting coffee for the men who claimed that the reason they weren’t paying you was because “the experience has more value”. Bullshit. How the fuck are you supposed to pay off your car payment, pay your rent, and overall survive. So when you saw the advertisement for a paid assistant position, you didn’t hesitate to apply. 

“Your references are impeccable,” Frankie gawked at your interview while scanning through your resumé. “And I don’t think I’ve read a better cover letter. You’re only 26, and you’ve kept three unpaid internships–each one lasting a year–while holding two jobs at the same time? Out of all the candidates I’ve interviewed, you’re by far the most qualified candidate.” She looked up at you, taking note of your leg bouncing up and down. “So, it says here that you’re still working these two jobs.”

“Yes,” you respond. “That’s right.”

Frankie gave you a smile. “Well, I’d suggest you put in your notice. I’ve never done this before, but I’d like to offer you this job on sight.”

You remained professional until you got to the parking lot. Frankie had walked you out as it was already dark out. 

“I know it’s a military base,” she said, “but you can never be too careful.”

You thanked her after she said goodnight, and as soon as you got in your car the professionalism dropped and you squealed, your hands squeezing the wheel as you jumped around in your seat. When you looked in the rear view mirror, your face immediately flushed when you saw that Frankie had turned her head to see what the noise was. But, what you didn’t see was that when she turned back around and continued back into the building, a bright smile was plastered onto her face.

“Oh, god, Frankie!”

You tried your best to stay quiet as you straddled Frankie’s lap, her fingers curling quickly as you moved your hips quickly against her hand.

“Hush, darling,” she murmured against your lips. “We wouldn’t want anyone catching us.”

It was the second year in your position as Frankie’s assistant. The first year was quite uneventful. You scheduled her meetings, kept track of her missed phone calls, emails, and brought her coffee. But not on her request. It was completely voluntary. Every morning, you’d get her a chai latte along with your macchiato. 

Despite the fact that she told you it wasn’t necessary, she enjoyed it…very much.

And, as you continued through this job, a slight crush formed. But the slight crush turned…not-so-slight. It was only after your first dream about her that you had to acknowledge the feelings. 

Your relationship had changed from coworker to friend. And when she invited you out for drinks just months ago, you couldn’t resist. Those drinks led you back to her flat, and the night in the flat led to a passionate love affair–no matter how inappropriate it was. Now, you spent more time at her flat than you did at yours.

“Dr. Lethbridge, I w–”

“Please,” she cut in. “Frankie. I think we’re past the professional stage.”

And now, here you were, in her office with the blinds drawn over the windows after bringing her the files she requested. 

“Please, Frankie,” you breathed, your fingers holding the back of her blazer in a bunch.“Please, I need to c–!”

A knock at the door cut you both off. She removed her finger slowly, grinning as you watched her place them in her mouth. “Get under the desk. Now.”

As soon as you dropped to the floor, there was another knock and she spoke. “Come in!”

Of course, to your luck, it was her boss–who was technically your boss too. Shit.

Your heart was beating out of your chest as you sat beneath her desk, curled into a ball as you listened to their conversation. 

“Just checking up on your progress with the drones,” he said.

“Well, we’re trying to figure out what the best size would be,” she answered. “Once we figure the dimensions out, we can begin working on the aerodynamics.”

It felt like hours as they discussed their latest project. You tried to steady your breathing, taking shallow breaths as you tried to remain quiet. You let out a sigh as he shut the door, Frankie rolling her chair back to let you back out. She looked up at the clock on her wall to see that it was almost five o’clock and turned to you, taking your hand in hers and pulling you down so you were face level with her.

After placing a kiss on your lips, she grinned. “You were such a good girl for me,” she muttered. “Now, I want you to drive home, and I expect you to be in bed with your clothes entirely off. And when I get home, I promise we’ll finish what we started, darling.”

You didn’t need to be told twice. You gave her a swift kiss before leaving the office quickly, grabbing your coat, and making a B-line to your car.

But anyway, yeah. I don't think we'll totally line-up on this one.

I have little to no faith that the GA (or even a large part of the fandom) would be able to make the necessary distinctions without handholding by the writers. And I don't see handholding happening here.

And yes. A lot of that falls on the audience and its inability to understand nuance.

But because I understand the audience and don't expect handholding, I try to look at it as realistically as I can. Especially when it comes to how the narrative is going to be interpreted.

I do understand what you're saying. I just also disagree about the retconning. I think that's the major disagreement here really. Whether it's retconning and what that would mean.

I will say tho that I still think you need to read-up on sexual fluidity. Because hun, not everyone's sexuality is fixed. 😂

Okay, let me preface that...

1. I had an awesomely funny idea about a rant on tea and why tea is still superior. Something along the lines of "You think tea is expendable, but you're wrong" (and you are), but now I forgot half of it again because I had to work.

2. A more serious preface: I really love how we (and many other people) can have differences in opinion and still be respectful and get along great. I mean, as much as we can sometimes be quite passionate about our opinions, in the end, MOST things are just approximations of truths. We apply categories and definitions, interpret things and approach them depending on our own experience and knowledge, and most of the time we're all at least a little bit right - or it's not about being right or wrong at all but just about different and equally valid ways to look at things.

That being said, I want to start with your last point. Sexual fluidity.

I have read quite a bit about it. I have also read counter-arguments on it, different takes, and anything in between. It's a topic where psychologists and sociologists aren't all in agreement either. I know there are various studies on the subject with differing results.

The first question I am asking - and people have pointed that out as well - is whether what people 'identify as' (e.g. someone who 'used to be straight' but 'now is gay' or other) can be taken at face value. Is a thing ultimately true just because a person says that's the way they want to name it?

I guess the answer to this is yes and no. (There are so many implications here that this question alone would probably fill an entire essay, which I'm not going to do now). While, yes, I absolutely would say people should respect and not question what others say about their own sexuality, if we're talking about it from a more scientific viewpoint, things can get different nuances. People may choose to identify a certain way because they feel those categories fit better. But they apply those categories ("I am gay") more to a status quo than the big picture.

Furthermore, some people have criticised the concept of sexual fluidity because it can be used in harmful ways against people. Many argue that they could never help or fight their sexual orientation because it is innate ("Born this way"). If you bring in the idea that sexuality can change*, you open the door for people who will say "No, you were not born this way. You took a wrong turn somewhere, and you can turn back."

Then again, others feel that the experience of their sexuality having changed in profound ways validates this concept, which is also something one has to take into account.

However.

*I, personally, and going by some of the articles, essays, and study summaries I read, believe that sexuality is mostly innate. There will always be exceptions to every rule under the sun, but in the vast majority of cases, your sexuality develops early on and remains within the same range throughout your life. (Intensity/motivation/drive is much more subject to fluctuations than orientation.)

What you define as "range" is, I assume, the crux of the matter.

(I'm solely going to talk about targets now, i.e. male or female sex, leave out motivation/intensity/character of attraction, and leave out other variants of gender identity for the sole purpose on keeping it simple and focusing on this one aspect)

If we view sexual orientation on a spectrum from "attracted to females" to "attracted to males", many studies suggest that the extreme ends of the spectrum are rarer than the area in between. In a way, more people are at least "a little bit bi" than entirely straight or entirely gay.

How you define that and where you draw the line depends on what aspects of sexuality you take into account: are we basing it solely on sexual attraction (i.e. seeing women and finding them physically appealing, being interested - be it in reality or fantasy - in sexual conduct with them), do we make a distinction between sexual attraction and sexual behaviour (i.e. people who do not feel attraction per se but engage in sex with a person based on other criteria), and do fantasies/thought experiments feature into what we call attraction?

The thing is, here you already have the dilemma that definitions differ; interpretations of them differ as well, as does quantification.

When I talk about sexual orientation, however, I am talking about physically present and distinguishable attraction. I.e. someone who is bi does experience - potentially varying - levels of sexual attraction to both men and women. (I, a bisexual can look at, say, Eddie Diaz and Taylor Kelly and think 'hot damn, I'd so tap that!' I.e. I am physically attracted to both of them.)

Does that mean that a bisexual person needs to act on it, or even has always been aware of it? No. There are so many secondary factors that influence why we a) feel attraction and b) allow ourselves to feel it that it can be tricky to figure yourself out.

However, once someone develops attraction to the same sex, that person didn't suddenly wake up gay. There is no 'fluidity' that would make a straight man turn gay all of the sudden if he wasn't already on that spectrum. In my opinion. So the fluidity here is more about how this person experiences something that has always been a potential for, in this case, him. He was always bi/on the bi spectrum, he just needed some time and the right occasion to discover it.

"But Sandra (yes, that's my actual name ^^), that's why I'm saying Eddie is bi," you may say. And yes, he could be bi. It would be totally logically sound to see him as bi, and I'm not disputing it.

However, the point that I've been making about Eddie is that sexual behaviour - and even the way we want to define ourselves - can differ from sexual attraction/orientation.

We know there are people who thought they were 'insert sexual orientation here' for many years until they figured out they're actually something else. And most of those people will later say things like "deep down, I always knew" or "there were so many signs, but I didn't want to see them". Some might say "being straight worked okay for me - I wasn't suffering in those relationships - but now that I've been with a man/men, I know it was never the exact right thing for me. This, what I've discovered now, is a completely different level of sexual desire and pleasure that I've never known before."

You also didn't dispute that those stories are valid. I'm just putting it out there again.

Now, what you've been saying about how those concepts and stories translate to fictional creations and their perception by a general audience.

You may be right in your assumption that the GA won't be able to understand these nuances, and that the writers won't go out of their way to hold their hands and make them get it. The question is just, does the vast majority of the GA have to get it?

I would like it if they did, but the thing is, the GA already doesn't understand those things as well as we do. No matter how you spin it and how you show it, there will be parts of the GA who will simply not get it, or draw the wrong conclusions ("Oh, Buck is gay now or what?" for example). Whether Buck and Eddie are explicitly labeled as bi or, in Eddie's case (because Buck definitely is not) gay, people will twist it somehow so it fits their worldview.

So I don't even fully care about how the GA will perceive either of the options.

Personally, I would just love to see a story about a man realising later in his adult life that he is - and always has been - gay. I would love to see what we saw only the result of with Michael explored in more detail. And I think it could be valuable if done right. It could even make some of the GA understand that this is a legitimate thing that happens to people - the same GA that's already somewhat familiar, on a very rudimentary level, with that concept through Michael but might want to actually learn more about it.

We would still get great representation for a bisexual man in Buck. We'd have both types in one ship, and to me, personally, that would be the ideal scenario.

It's not a head canon, it's an actual potential I see and that I find valid evidence for in the text of the show (while, yes, there is also evidence for the contrary, because 'evidence' in literary or film analysis is almost always up for interpretation and dispute).

To me, it's doable to show Eddie as a man who, yes, loved his wife, enjoyed having sex with her, but did that out of affection, an emotional connection, and a yearning for physical closeness rather than actual physical attraction. It doesn't have to go that way, but it could. And it would not invalidate that he loved Shannon, if done right.

I'm not saying you are wrong in the way you interpret things, or what you foresee the response to be. I'm just saying I'm looking at it from a different angle than you. And I believe both stances can absolutely co-exist because, as I said in my preface, I don't believe this is a thing that can be narrowed down as actually correct or incorrect.

born to a travelling family between walls Maria and Rose

lived on the road her whole life, travelling to towns with her family band so they could perform for money and provide a little ‘pick-me-up’ to those who needed it

she was a singer and played a number of instruments but always loved the flute

was also a songwriter for her family and made up tunes about memories they shared/experienced

loves dancing too so can be very agile in combat

collectively they sang songs passed down through her family tho their origin is(/was) unknown

is the 3rd oldest of 7 kids (no i haven’t named them all yet but i will soon aha) but the order goes: brother (3 years older), sister (2 years older), margot, sister (2 years younger), brother (3 years younger), sister (5 years younger) and sister (7 years younger)

queue sadness - family were ambushed and murdered one night when she was 12 (she always assumed it bandits stealing their earnings but she later discovers thats not the case)

all members of her family were killed - while she had her own throat slit and was left for dead

lost the ability to speak fully - small words or phrases she can now speak but found it too painful to try anything more

her voice also became incredibly gravelly and she hated it so she chose to remain silent from then on

obviously proved them wrong with her ditermination in all areas of her training

always felt that bit more alone than the rest, but made some friends after some time

chose to join the survey corps in the hopes she would be useful to them

struggled a lot to begin with, her friends having joined with her but they didn’t survive very long ):

was told to meet with erwin after he heard of her unique communication skills and her proved agility in combat

was asked to write down what her hand gestures meant so that others could learn it and actually talk to her finally (also ended up boosting her trust amongst everyone else because “oh wow the commander thinks shes cool so she must be”)

hangi was obsessed with it - kicked off a very close bond between the 2

ended up being shared with her closest people - so basically not everyone can read what shes saying but the people who need to know, do. 

originally offered herself as a ‘decoy’ - if she could be a distraction during missions etc with her agility proving useful then she felt better about herself even tho it was always risky - anything to keep the rest safe

worked her way up the ranks as it were, proving she could be a firm leader even without speaking - she has mastered the glare so i mean if looks could kill *shrug*

became fasinated with hanji’s work and ended up serving as an assistant of sorts

yknow how in labs someone is standing by with a fire extinguisher just in case? thats margot during hanji’s experiments. and she loves it.

oh btw is a member of hanji’s squad obvs but later on swaps between squad hanji and levi when things start getting worse for the scouts

made fast friends with everyone hanji knew - tho was always a little intimidated by levi (context: she is 4 years younger than him)

became a respected member amongst the troops so she felt ‘at home’ again

shes the big sister of the group - need a hug? shes there. being an asshole? she will beat the shit outta you.

when leading her own teams shes given at least one person she knows well so they can serve as a translator for her hand gestures basically

her love interest is levi so of course they end up getting along?? what are you on?? i don’t need to explain that shit??

FINALLY we’re at the events of the show...

anyway stuff and things: is quite reserved around eren and the other recruits to start with - tries to keep a distance to not get attatched (that’ll only hurt more when they die *shrugs again*)

can’t help but get along with armin tho as he reminds her A LOT of her little brother

shes there during most of the stuff of the show lets just say that - saves me having to explain everything

ends up getting really close with everyone and sees the recruits as her lost siblings in some ways

HOWEVER: when kenny reappears and the interior police is discovered, with the help of hanji (and no one else knowing) she pieces together what actually happened to her family - her past isn’t exactly common knowledge

the songs her family sang were always uplifting - tales of strange places and love stories etc

none of her family knew they referred to outside the walls tho... and the plot CHICKENS (get it? thickens...chickens...nevermind)

so naturally when its brought to the governments attention that a travelling family are spreading info they shouldn’t be/know about, they had to be taken out - didn’t expect one of them to survive tho

struggled to share this info with levi obvs

the further the show progresses, she tried learning to speak again - practising when she could but knew that those around her could still understand her sign language

is HEARTBROKEN when having to choose between armin and erwin so this time she stays silent. fully.

did also end up getting badly hurt during the ‘retake shiganshina mission’ but tried to hide it cus bigger things were happening

that pissed levi off because she had a pretty bad injury on her stomach but she was more worried about him and everyone else so aRgUmEnTs *jazz hands*

recovered pretty well tho and made up with levi - kicked off their romantic relationship

writes songs of what they all went through so that no one forgets - heroic tales for some, quiet moments amongst their group for others

SPOILERY STUFF FOR SEASON 4:

with the marleyans providing a lot of info and aid in expanding the island she took it upon herself to ask if they knew anything about languages/learning to speak again

spent a while with all her friends and the marleyans learning to speak in sentances again without causing her pain or discomfort

(i have 5 episodes left of season 4 so am yet to know how things end and in general for the whole show so there will be changes but for now she is happily in love with levi and trying to do everything she can to help - even tho so is still a little careless with her life at times)

i will never be over the way this show has continuously tried to frame bellamy and clarke as heroes and good people, or the way the fandom has almost completely embraced and supported that narrative

the amount of times i’ve read “[clarke] saved everyone’s ungrateful asses” makes me seriously consider turning evil. like aren’t y’all bored? don’t you have a different sentence you would like to say for a change?

i want to talk about this but i probably don’t remember a lot of the details of this show so if im forgetting something or get something wrong i apologise, but i never have any desire to rewatch past s2.

clarke isn't even the hero of her own side, she took power of them using the military force of the grounders, someone else’s people, she’s forced them into alliances without their knowledge that weren’t in their best interest (while she literally had no idea what they were even going through because she’d abandoned them after upsetting their entire political structure, and this leader she’s bowing to is responsible for the slaughter of their children, has broken an alliance previously with them, has hung the threat of genocide over their heads, and who isn’t even wanted in power by her own people- dragging skaikru into that conflict, too), she’s sacrificed them and what’s best for them in order to cater to/concentrate on the grounders newest demands or pursue her own personal mission, she’s lied to and patronised them, she’s abandoned them and surrendered them to die while they were under her protection and responsibility, and in Book 2 (and these aren’t her people but in canon she’s their leader anyway apparently despite trying to blow them all up a few days before...) she’s abandoned them again, and is speaking for them without consent or any connection to what’s happening with them again,.........her inner circle/her ‘friends’ have to be extremely careful to remain important to her or on her team or they’ll be sacrificed, harmed or become acceptable losses to whatever her newest goal is too (but hey at least she says she cares about them) all while acting very ‘woe is me’ about the whole crushing weight of responsibility she shouldn’t have.

but she’s the hero, she’s beloved, she’s special, she has relationships that were never built, she and only she saved everyone again and has all the lines telling us so no matter how dishonest those statements are.

like this is where i personally see what you said in your ask most: when it concerns clarke.

bellamy on the other hand...i don’t place him at all on the same level as clarke when it comes to this. clarke has privilege that bellamy just never had as a character. and i think that does probably play into why i like him.

him being a hero to the delinquents/the 48 is completely believable to me. he was the original leader, he got them through a tough time, he chose to put himself on the line for them, and he’s the one who stayed. i also think it’s reasonable that fandom might romanticise him this way because he is one who has been shown to value the one life as well as the many of his people, a guy doing his best and making big mistakes along the way, a mixed complex bag of good and bad, i find him very likable and i love the toxic/pained/vulnerable ones lol but more than anything i find him to be one of the more interesting/entertaining characters on the show (Book 1).

we also see him torment himself with his own mistakes instead of just having other people do it for him/remind him like we see happen with clarke- and we all know fandom loves equating that with a “redemption arc” and as much as i personally dislike seeing pity parties i do like self-awareness and responsibility in characters that goes beyond a 3-second-long puppy dog look or straight dismissal of someone else’s pain, and for the most part bellamy’s expressions of this don’t come across as demanding sympathy from others but from genuine self-loathing and an honesty to himself, internalising the effects of his actions/childhood.

i know i personally prefer The Flawed Protector over The Tortured Saviour nobody asked for (same white male hypocritical moral hero in a woman’s body).

i don’t believe in assigning “hero” to any of them though like that’s the whole entire point of the show lol “there are no good guys.” and i also think a major chunk of fandom/shippers have warped bellamy’s character so much that it isn’t even him anymore, so this man they’re celebrating as a hero/good person isn’t even bellamy sometimes.

all of the genuinely “good” and kind people are dead.

i don't think i'd say bellamy was ever framed as a hero. like he was just never important enough to be, he’s just not put into those positions (despite being the male lead), clarke is. as the protagonist ig. bellamy...he’s the protector/knight of the heroes, but not the actual hero himself (applies to octavia too i think, where she acts and he reacts).

like take mount weather, clarke becomes empowered by her “wanheda” status, bellamy’s (and monty’s) part in that is lost...clarke is “bearing it so they don’t have to” (rme) which simultaneously strips the other boys from claiming the ‘victory’ of saving the 48 while still leaving them with the guilt, like it suits how i see clarke perfectly that she’s the only one to refer to the genocide (and shutting down the CoL, i realised) as “i” while monty and bellamy say “we” and it was clarke’s actions that got them to that point in the first place, but this is one of those times she’s clearly The Protagonist. if that makes sense lol.

bellamy is on the opposite side to clarke in s3 and s7 and he needs to be moved to her side in order to be on the ‘right’ one. now i don’t agree with that one bit mind you (when it comes to s3, idc about s7 lol) and i didnt see it that way but imo that’s how the show wrote it, to the point he was either demonized endlessly by fandom or woobified in a way that denied him his own agency. during s5 i don’t i think anyone was framed in a good light. i can see this applying in s6, though- where he was his absolute worst self yet, betraying his own development, failing at every point to “do better” despite claiming it, but still was given that reasurring line that they did better and saved people and was in that “heroic” position i guess? but is that because he was back to being clarke’s “good little knight” tho? (but do we claim s6??? do we really??? do we claim it ladies???)

s6 was 100% dedicated to making clarke look good/like a 'good' or sympathetic person. the bodysnatching plot (and the s6 sheidheda plot because if it was supposed to be about bellamy and address his s5 actions he would’ve been present to experience/observe those consiquences himself but he wasn’t lmaoooo. instead it was to tell the audience ‘actually clarke was right last season and here’s another reason to feel bad for her and how those ungrateful bitches were treating her’) has no other purpose for existing. clarke's character has consistently been elevated at the expense of everyone else's. but im not sure the writing did a very good job convincing me she was a good person if it was trying to do that LMAO like my interpretation of her is so fitted to canon, and no amount of throwaway lines telling me how good she is did anything to change what i saw yk? and in s6, combined with being patronised by the writers, i found her to be at some of her most obnoxious.

i don’t agree with placing bellamy and clarke in the same boat tbh. like they just come from completely different places and come across differently, especially in the way they interact with other characters.

in my experience this fandom (on tumblr) is extremely skewed in favour of clarke, like ive never seen a fandom so obsessed with their protagonist. there’s A LOT of clarke stans who stan her for being one of those “deserves better :(” characters, selfless and heroic, and support that view that she’s the superior character, entitled to other character’s devotion, love and validation yet doesn’t have to reciprocate any of it. the CL/BC ship war was just a bunch of people fighting over clarke, who deserves her more, which character is more toxic to her, which other character would 100% be her bff supportive of that relationship, treating her as a passive whose actions don’t take affect. im not sure how much i blame the writing for that because if so many of us are capable of recieving her character in this way then...why aren’t so many other people? how is there such a massive disconnect between the ways we see her?

and imo a lot of the bellamy love in this fandom comes from shipping him with clarke too rather than being because of who he actually is.

Spiking, serving, receiving, setting, blocking and all the techniques of those. Beach volley is played by 2 persons only. It is by far, the easiest and fastest way (subjective) for a person to learn anything about volleyball techniques. Also, don’t forget, you play in the sand! I personally know someone who switched from indoor court to beach and then went back to indoor, and you know what? His jumping, stamina, power, and spiking/blocking height have gotten so high! Like in europe, you could drive like 2 hours and the local people would speak a different language, one out of the 700 still active, except all of this is in the same country.

This is all only talking about the ethnic groups that are considered native to the country, too. There are many communities started by immigrants over the years as well, most prominently Arabs, Chinese, Indians, and the Dutch (yeah colonialism). It's pretty wild.

A few years ago it got worse, though. If you ask me to point at a specific point that exacerbated this ethnic racism, it would have to be that time in 2014 when a christian chinese Indonesian was elected as the governor of the capital, Jakarta. To be clear, there has only ever been one other christian chinese governor in the capital before him, so it caused quite the stir.

But uh, I'm not gonna go into the politics of it. As someone who's part of that double minority in an Asian country, I can, however, tell you that this schism between ethnic groups definitely flows both ways. As much as the pribumi (indigenous groups) have discriminated against the non-pribumi, especially the Chinese Indonesians, the opposite applies too; but more constrained within their personal circles, like in the way they talk around the dinner table, or how they treat their indigenous servants. The way some of my older relatives have talked about indigenous people would have mobs frothing at the mouth, I swear.

As stated before, statistically there are significantly less Chinese indonesians living in poverty than there are poor indigenous people. Of course, partially it's because there are way more indigenous people than chinese Indonesians, but it's really bred this sense of resentment from the majority of the population, and on the part of middle and upper class chinese Indonesians, a sense of superiority. It's perpetuated this cycle of mutual racism, and is honestly whack.

A Conversation about Corn Kings & One-Horse Thieves

When I moved to Chicago in 1994 to begin my undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, I’m fairly certain that I didn’t think of Illinois outside the City of Wind’s ragged boundaries.

I knew it existed and that it had people, villages, educational institutions of great repute, and agribusiness in all the cardinal directions. I just didn’t know much else.

Certainly it was my own condition of growing up in Seattle that perhaps did not make me particularly compelled to visit the non-Chicago parts of the state. My mother grew up on a farm and she talked about how much work it was, morning, noon, and night. It did not offer inducements to visit rural areas on a regular basis.

What I came to discover during future expeditions around Illinois’s weighty midsection was that this landscape was complex and compelling. It wasn’t just all Honest Abe Might Have Slept Here markers (tho those exist), but rather a region with much to reveal if I was willing to slow down and look closely.

It was with great interest that I saw James Krohe Jr’s latest book, Corn King and One-Horse Thieves: A Plain-Spoken History of Mid-Illinois , in the window last month at Prairie Archives in downtown Springfield. The cover art caught my eye and I picked it up for closer consideration. I was delighted to find that it was a robust regional history that offered insightful commentary on the region’s development told through the creation of transportation systems, new arrivals from distant lands, the growth of higher education, and more.

In short, it renewed my interest in a region that once upon a time gave me little pause as I moved on to other things.

To me, that is the mark of a worthy read.

I reached out to James to ask him a few questions about his recent book. 

You’ve written eloquently about the mid-Illinois region and beyond for decades. What brought you to this particular project?

I had written a place-based guide to the history of each of Illinois’s seven regions. It ended up being nearly 700,000 words long. (It’s possible to know too much about a topic.) The problem became how to carve out of that fatty carcass a publishable book. The middle third of the state is not necessarily the most interesting part but it is the most typical, and (not unimportant) a book about it was judged by publishers to be the easiest to market.

If the book sells, I harbor hopes that the publisher might consider similar volumes that would eventually compose a history of Downstate Illinois. One does not yet exist, and it might bring the rest of the state ought from Chicago’s shadow.

As you worked on this project, were there literary inspirations that you drew on as you thought about its tone and structure?

I had no model for the structure. I opted for a thematic treatment rather than the usual chronological structure because I am sensitive to the common complaint that any chronological account is just one damned thing after another.

The style is just me. I come from a magazine background, not an academic one. I grew up reading history, which taught me history, but the writers who taught me style were people like Shaw and Mencken and J. K. Galbraith. I probably ought to add Macaulay; anyone who knows his work will recognize that I picked up some of his bad habits.

The tone was a bigger problem. There’s a tension in the book between me trying to rise to the Olympian tone of the traditional historian that I’m trying to be and me sinking to the sardonic tone of the 40-year social critic, polemicist, and opinion columnist that I am. Some readers will find that the latter enlivens the reading, others that it discredits the history.

One publisher was so bothered by my snide asides that he insisted that I write a preface in which I would anticipate the what-gives-you-the-right kind of complaints by establishing that I’m family, as it were, and thus have the right to be critical. Which is silly. To quote our Gov. Jim Thompson, this isn’t heaven, this is Illinois.

Were there other sections or compelling asides from this thoughtful history that needed to be omitted? If so, could you share a few of them?

It is the buildings and customs and personalities of a place that gives it its peculiar flavor, and in this book’s initial drafts I included treatments of architecture and the arts, mid-Illinois contributions to popular culture, and local dialects and slang. I also hoped to include potted biographies of some of the region’s great merchants. Cities and towns are characters in own right, and surprisingly different and my original draft contained profiles of some of them. Historic preservation is hardly mentioned, and ought to be, as should the ways that the present uses the past to create a sense of place that often is at odds with the real one.

I’ve never gotten good at reducing whole chapters to single sentences, and losing what an editor of mine used to praise as the telling detail makes such sentences dull, so I didn’t even bring up these “lesser” aspects of the story. Maybe in another book someday.

Along with your work, are there other key works that represent the full range of the region’s history and sense of place?

Thank you for hinting that my book is a key work. It’s nice to think so, but the downstate returns, so to speak, have yet to come in.

One of the reason I wrote the book was that there is no work that represents the full range of the history and sense of place of this region as I define it. But aspect of mid-Illinois life have been taken up by lots of historians, journalists, geographers and the like. A very short list of works I regard as key would include these:

Sense of place often is most vividly conveyed by fiction and verse. Here we look to Vachel Lindsay and Edgar Lee Masters and, more recently, William Maxwell’s Illinois works.

The frontier period is well-recalled in three works by pioneer women--Christiana Holmes Tillson’s A Woman's Story of Pioneer Illinois (Southern Illinois University Press, 1995); Rebecca Burlend’s A True Picture of Emigration (R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., 1936); and Eliza Farnham’s Life in Prairie Land (Arno Press, 1972).

Historian John Mack Faragher’s account of the frontier era through an early Sangamon County settlement south of Springfield, Sugar Creek: Life On the Illinois Prairie (Yale University Press, 1986) is essential. Also of interest is Peter Cartwright, Legendary Frontier Preacher by Robert Bray (University of Illinois Press, 2005).

Not a history per se, Women, Work, and Worship in Lincoln's Country: The Dumville Family Letters, edited by Anne M. and John P. Heinz (University of Illinois Press, 2016) brings the small-town mid-1800s alive. The small town of the mid-1900s is recalled in John E. Hallwas’s superior social history, The Bootlegger: A Story of Small-Town America (University of Illinois Press, 1999). I also enjoyed Carl Van Doren’s memoir of his youth in Champaign County, An Illinois Boyhood (The Viking Press, 1939).

Few towns and cities have the biographies they deserve. Exceptions include Benjamin Thomas’s Lincoln’s New Salem (Abraham Lincoln Association, 1934) and Here I Have Lived: A History of Lincoln's Springfield, 1821–1865 (Abraham Lincoln Bookshop, 1971). They Broke the Prairie by Earnest Elmo Calkins (University of Illinois Press, 1989), a history of the Galesburg and of Knox College earned a placed among the best books about Illinois cities. Another fine town biography is The Social Order of a Frontier Community: Jacksonville, Illinois 1825–70 by Don Harrison Doyle ( University of Illinois Press, 1978). Carl Sandburg’s memoirs of his boyhood in Galesburg, Always the Young Strangers (Harcourt, Brace and Co., 1953) and Ever the Winds of Chance (University of Illinois Press, 1983) are affectionate and rich.

Two books about very different aspects of mid-Illinois life should be mentioned. One is Roberta Senechal’s excellent The Sociogenesis of a Race Riot: Springfield, Illinois, in 1908, whose reprint edition was retitled as In Lincoln's Shadow: The 1908 Race Riot in Springfield, Illinois (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 2008). The other is Robert Sutton’s study of mid-Illinois’s nineteenth century utopian communities, Heartland Utopias (Northern Illinois University Press, 2009).

As with other regions in the Upper Midwest, one could say that mid-Illinois is having a difficult time retaining and attracting young people. Is there any possible solution to this matter?

I’d like to think that giving people a deeper understanding the place would help, but I don’t. The problem you describe owes to ineluctable geographic and technological factors. As I note in my epilogue, for at least a century after 1830, mid-Illinois’s position in the middle of everywhere left it well situated to exploit old markets to the east and new markets to the west, and to receive invigorating flows of people from all directions. These days, being in the middle of the continent puts the region well away from today’s new opportunities, which lie on the nation’s coasts if not beyond the nation’s ocean shores.

Parts of mid-Illinois have lost so many people that population densities are at or near frontier levels. It’s hard to find enough people to fill schools boards and town councils. As long as the land is here, mid-Illinois will have some economic utility but I wonder how long it will remain viable as a place. What history tells us is that Illinois boomed as a place that people came to because it wasn’t as bad as the place they just left; hundreds of thousands of our people have left in recent years looking for a new Illinoises.

Who knows? No one anticipated the agents of past booms, from scientific agriculture to coal mining to the railroads. Maybe in the future mid-Illinois, the prime countryside will be left to robotic farmers and the land not fit for farming will be reengineered to recreate the vast prairie of old, where vacationers can experience wagon trains or bison hunts or paddle down the Illinois like the voyageurs.

Or maybe—and here I’m only half kidding—a wise government will take some lessons from history by investing public money to help Illinoisans move to wherever the weather is nicer and the opportunities more plentiful, then sell the newly-vacant countryside to  homesteaders from abroad, just like in the 1800s, only instead of Europe they would come from Africa and Asia. Why not? It worked once.
