How does it feel to be my current favorite?

FIRST WORLDBUILDING, I SWEAR IT’S NECESSARY TO SET THE SCENE

Okay, in this world, merfolk and aquatic sirens are seen as two separate species. This is mostly perpetuated by the merfolk themselves who are peaceful versus man-eating and don’t have the same mystical vocal powers sirens use to hypnotize or paralyze prey. There are also other differences, such as jaw/tooth structure. Mermaids--many of them at least, may have sharp, interlocking, predator teeth, but sirens have a specific fang structure in the front of their mouth. Protruding fangs for causing wounds that will bleed the most with the least “effort,” the “puncture teeth” for quicker kills. There are also curved fangs for skinning/descaling prey. 

These latter fangs are important for more than hunting. The siren society has a culture of scarification. Each family has a crest, with individuals therein creating their own variant when they come of age. Who you are is branded/bitten/scarred into your skin, and then you mark your mate and children. There can also be specific circumstances for marks, such as a lifelong debt. For the most part though, you only bare 1 to 2 marks (depending on if you keep your family crest and make your new tattoo separate or if you bare both a mate and an individual mark) and these are taken super seriously in both who you are and who belongs to you until the day they die.

Sirens dwell in the deeper trenches of the ocean for the most part and have adapted for it, and who are known to not only drown humans and eat them, but to even sometimes sneak up on a merperson swimming alone, drag them to depths where the pressure starts interfering with their ability to fight back with a clear head, overpower them, and turn (basically) cannibal. 

Why do I say basically cannibal? Because the sirens are taught that really they are one common people, just adapted differently as the merfolk denied some of their true nature and excommunicated those that did not want to live oppressed. There are subsets of mers who have all sort of different tails, sizes, and talents and are still called merfolk, so why should those that “have the song” (and the taste for more than fish) be treated differently? They would also say that more merfolk (senselessly) kill sirens than the opposite, and this hate combined with the fact that Sirens hunt the surface less and less as humans grow more creative and vicious, means they are dying out.

Humans (the ones that have seen these sea creatures and believe in them at all)  just know pretty-half fish= probably dangerous and don't distinguish between merfolk and sirens at all. If you’re close enough to study their teeth it’s probably too late.

Adam and Tadashi= sirens

Langa and Shadow=mermen

Miya- Either a merman or just straight up I make him a salt-water catfish to be funny. He is identified as “sidekick” more than an actual species in my mind so far

Cherry, Joe and Reki= human sailors

Oka= a human but not a sailor, someone who runs a store in a port the Matchablossom ship often restocks and Reki's former boss before he left to sail with Joe and Cherry

THE BACKSTORIES

So we have Adam and Tadashi when they were but tiny things playing around, exploring where they were not supposed to go, and they get attacked by some other dangerous sea creature with things only getting worse when they almost get caught in a net when they flee to the shallow. The net gets very badly wrapped around tiny Tadashi’s throat and he suffers vocal cord damage and loses his main power as a siren before he even grows into it--a consequence of curiosity, Tadashi views it, and though he escapes the net, does he ever really?

Adam learns zero lessons, and a bit later in life he dabbles in a Little Mermaid type narrative with Cherry and Joe when they were younger and dumber...until they discover Adam  luring more weak minded sailors to their doom and prove some people just aren't down with murder for fun and food.

PRESENT DAY

 Captain Kaoru and first mate Kojiro (Though Kaoru and Kojiro keep saying Carla, Kaoru's really fancy nautical compass is the first mate, and Kojiro is just hanging around) take on the plunky Reki as a new crew mate. Reki spots Langa or vice versa and the love at first sight strikes hard. They continue to find ways to interact, but mostly moon over each other in typical teen star-crossed fashion. The “true” Little Mermaid narrative vibes begin. Joe and Cherry find out about their little meetups and warn Reki about the “dangers and demons of the deep” but Reki can’t fathom Langa being like the stories they tell. 

Langa’s mother would not be thrilled with him revealing himself to a human, but the real danger for Langa, though he doesn’t know it, is when Adam hears Langa happily singing to himself about a day spent with Reki. He becomes convinced Langa has “the song” and can bend the world to his will, and runs far with the implications, convinced that he’ll somehow unite mer kingdoms, bringing the sirens out of the depths to the more hospitable merfolk territory and plentiful hunting grounds. 

The only thing standing in the way is Reki and all that needs to happen is to get rid of him or have Langa do it through a little bit of trickery in saying that if Reki's love is true when Langa sings he'll grow gills.

Well, not the only thing, because then we have Matchablossom, already feeling like it's their burden to kill Adam.

And maybe I have some other tricks planned, but I feel like this is enough of an explosion of info.

They lost their sanity; so much that reason wouldn't fix them. Kojiro fought with everything he had, and he'd lose to them, too powerless to stop his crew from destroying themselves. The last thing Kojiro witnessed was the siren floating up to the rocks.

He had been stabbed, succumbing to his injuries where he collapsed against a boulder. He let go of his sword, eyes fluttered shut.

The siren crawled up to him. Kojiro made sight of its pretty pink scales decorating its fin. It's shiny, like diamonds. They looked like the kind of jewels sirens possessed that pirates would remove to show off as prize possessions. A rare finding to remind them of a journey they once embarked on.

Not a single scar touched the creature's body.

Kojiro was no more of a fool than his dead partners surrounding him. Their blood bathed the forest, seeping into the river of the siren's home.

In which Kojiro, a fearsome pirate of the high seas with nothing to lose, embarks on a deadly journey to capture a siren's gold; but the siren captures his heart instead.

Whatever the ship name is lol.  I’m sorry it doesn’t highlight the ot3 very well, and is kiiind of incoherent, but, in my defense I have not had coffee yet and I have predatory sirens/playful mermaids/swashbuckling sailors au for sk8 still on the mind, though I still, still haven’t started it.

Siren AU, Six  Run-on Sentence Story

  "Do you know how beautiful your eyes are?" Kaoru asked, consonants indistinct, the slur of his words due to more than the pints he’d imbibed before he’d come out of the tavern for some air and heard the most enthralling, haunting sound drawing him to the darker corners of the port where no boats were moored.

The young sailor lay on his stomach on the dock, head and upper body hanging over the edge, the ends of long, pale pink hair, some time ago freed from its tie floating into the dark water and clumping together like stray seaweed, nose almost skimming the water trying to follow as Ainosuke dipped fully below the surface for a moment before bobbing back up a fraction, bumping Kaoru’s forehead with his own.

He would have been easy prey,  gullible and lethargic, so absolutely charmed that there was no blink or flinch when Ainosuke’s mouth yawned open and he saw rows of sharp teeth (pointed and protruding fangs for bleeding prey, then curved fangs for descaling or shaving, then teeth for ripping and tearing flesh), but rather an extended hand with fingers only tentative for a moment before the pad of an index finger pressed against a fang softly then hard enough to draw blood like Sleeping Beauty at the spindle--not that the siren would have known the comparison to make--as the human breathed an awed, “You’re just fascinating all over.”

Ainosuke licked the human’s fingertip, swirling his tongue around the digit--to catch the slowly welling blood of course--but didn’t bite the hand that so trustingly entered his mouth, and when he summoned another series of warbling notes, they weren’t to convince Kaoru to push himself the rest of the way off of the dock and into the water, or even to fully paralyze him, but just to keep him heavy limbed and docile so he wouldn’t run away even as his eyes cleared back to the gold of coins in a shipwreck. Though Kaoru’s eyes had never reflected the swirling rainbow of the fully, completely ensorceled by song, Ainosuke had noticed, and perhaps that was why Ainosuke was so hesitant himself, engaging in this strange game, letting the human pet at the gills on the side of his neck now and call him, “Lovely,” because, certainly he wasn’t bewitched in return by a human even if he was a pretty specimen as these things went.

Whatever spell was being woven at the dock, it was not to remain when a concerned, searching voice called out through the night for the sailor (“Kaoru! Kaoru, where are you?” and Ainsoke swished the tip of his tail underwater, repeating the name in his mind, Kaoru, Kaoru, because that was music too) cueing Ainosuke to either dive and swim away or to call his prey quickly, though he did neither, frozen when the caller came into view, a patch of moonlight casting a glow across dark green hair like living sea grass that lined the floor of the nest you wanted to take a mate to, a strong featured face with kind eyes and the type of body that was a feast of every type, a cantata of a human, turning Ainosuke even more to a fish on a hook.

Fanfic ask game: Q 👀 👀 👀

I’m kidding, I’m kidding, how about M?

Q: How do you feel about collaborations?

I have a lot of thoughts on this one, rambling on far longer than the short answer I’ll give now.

Sharing ideas and feeding off of each other’s creativity is fantastic, it fills a different facet of that storyteller instinct, and it creates a special bond when you weave that tapestry together. However, there can be at times frustration in compromise when you realize a story is not completely within your control--though with the right partner and open communication that can be avoided--and the worry of letting someone down no matter what you do, always present just when you think about audience, is amplified and magnified when you now have a specific person, presumably one you respect and care about if you are writing with them who has just as much stock in the story as you and is now stuck with you.

That’s the writer side. Now the reader side of collaborations is unbound enthusiasm to see people you know and like joining their powers, though, I’ll admit when it’s writer/writer collaborations and not writer/artist power duos I am automatically (and now hypocritically) skeptical until I read a few chapters to see how they meld styles and make a narrative cohesive.

A post Episode 9 story where the full swing kiss caused more damage and Cherry wakes up believing it’s 8 years ago and he’s still dating Adam.

Matchablossom Fairytale Fridays….which actually predates all these other ideas. Joe and Cherry fall asleep during a Disney movie marathon they are having with Reki, Langa, Miya, and Shadow and end up each dreaming about a series of fairytales and Disney tales recast with them and people they know (ala Cindereki), each one teaching them something about themselves or each other. The premise is every Friday would center around a different story. I would do words and @shaky-mayhemm would do illustrations.

The Affair AU/Lovematcha Tries to Love Smash-a AU. Lovematchablossom. Post-canon where they had worked out their issues and were just starting to re-navigate a possible relationship as more than friends when a series of miscommunications (starting with Ainosuke getting married, which Ainosuke himself doesn’t see as a problem to other pursuing other relationships, but you can image sent...um...mixed signals) causes Kaoru to give up on Kojiro and Ainosuke and seek happiness elsewhere. Fast forward to Kaoru announcing he’s getting married and Kojiro and Ainosuke panicking/deciding to break up the engagement and plan one last bid with grand romantic gestures to win back Kaoru. Collaboration with @twileighplants conceived after THIS BACK AND FORTH during the original Six Sentence Fic day.

OH WAIT, DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THAT TIME I STARTED A MULTI-CHAPTER FIC AND THEN FORGOT IT BY THE NEXT DAY?

2. I will be over the moon thrilled with whatever would come, at whatever date.

3. I know how helpful it can be to have prompts though so you know where to begin or don't get caught up in this idea of needing some perfect premise

So let's think of some varied ideas.

In general, I'm always down for some kind of canon divergence au that plays on how one different decision can change everything. I have a real affinity toward mermaid/siren aus too. I'm also a sucker for soulmate aus when well done

If you want a more specific prompt

For Kingdom Hearts, something in the future with our current guardians of light picking out their own apprentices to train (whether Disney characters or final fantasy characters or ocs) would be cool to see.

For sk8, what about the story of the tournament seven years ago.

Or, for a sk8 art prompt, I really would love to see the wild costumes that Reki and Langa might end up with for S personas, especially if Adam gets involved as mentor, or redesigns for any of the others.

I don't know. I'll stress again, anything would be wonderful and surprises are great.
