last saturday my friend and i went to see the live i bought us tickets for back in may! the venue was further away than i would've liked, but ended up being real cozy and decently spacious considering it was a literal stop on the highway. i hadn't seen a lot of buzz for the event online, so i had no idea how many people were coming to see the show; was super excited to see a good number of fans lined up around the block when we got there.

hitsujibungaku was so. freaking. good. i’ve been deeply enthralled by alt-rock for the past couple of years but seeing this band perform in person reaffirmed that love for me tenfold. there was a moment, right at the tail end of 光るとき, that the music had changed the depth of the room. i could hear my soul rattling. something twisted in my gut was unfurling. there was no resisting the energy of the crowd. whenever a cheer ran through the bodies — you just had to let go and scream your heart out. i know a lot of people aren't into the genre 'cause all the distortion and reverb don't make for an especially clean listening experience, but i fear i've grown partial to the self-indulgent mess of sound. this sounds insane to say but i honest to god believe listening to rock makes you strong. it won't coddle you. no matter how embarrassed you are, it compels you to yell at the top of your lungs. it demands to be looked at directly. i think back to how timid i was as a kid, all the versions of me shying away from the world, desperate to blend in; and wish i could show them how much fun i'm having now. not holding back for anybody is still as scary as ever, but as it turns out: it's probably the coolest, quickest, least lonely path towards continued existence there is.

at some point when shiotsuka moeka, the band's lead vocalist, asked what song they should perform next, someone in the front started hollering so hard for マヨイガ, they got everybody to join in on the chant. needless to say the floor was quaking under the weight of our collective excitement during that whole track. i don't think i've ever wanted to know how to play the electric guitar more. — sidenote: one of my gripes with image sharing is that so much of it is hd and unfiltered these days! i’ve been taking more liberties with apps and editing programs just ‘cause there’s something real chewy about photos that give the impression of a moment that cannot be returned to.
