PSA: CAT MEDICAL BILL SCAM

Please signal boost this if possible to inform your followers about these scams.

Earlier today, I got a message from the account nicole-loves-king, where they asked me to signal boost a post because their cat needed medical help. Here's the ask:

I looked at this post and was immediately put off because they were asking for people to send things through 'friends and family', which if you aren't aware, is a very insecure way to send someone funds using paypal, because you don't have the protections you would get if you used 'goods and services'. So scammers can make off w your money really easily.

I looked at their blog and scrolled down to the end, and I realized their blog was made today! And, all their posts (there weren't many posts to begin with lol) were of trending topics. I noted puss in boots, and welcome to nightvale among others. This is probably how they found me, because I reblogged some of that stuff recently.

Here's the time stamp from their oldest post (notice it says the time, not the date, which means the post was from today):

In their ask, they also tell you to answer privately. Hm, that seems sus. Why would someone not want you to publish a request for help?

So I have a policy where I don't signal boost posts from brand new blogs because, yknow, they could be scams. I posted this, and the scam account blocked me. They also blocked my friend when they replied to their ask and said their blog looked suspicious. I did some more digging, and I found a comment from someone that confirmed my suspicions:

This is in fact a scam!

@nicstonka is almost identical to the above account (nicole-loves-king). Look at the avatar, the pictures, and the paypal address, both accounts even have 'nic' (as in 'nicole') in the name. The only thing that is extremely different is the name of the cat! Yet both blogs also have the name of the cat in their url ('king' and 'tonka'). That should also be a red flag, because usually someone isn't gonna have the name of their pet in their url, only a few posts, and a signal boost for that exact (fake) pet.

So if you see any blogs like this, where all they have is trending posts, it seems like they've copied and pasted an ask to you, or if they're asking you to send things via friends and family, vet them so so so carefully, because chances are you're walking into a scam. Don't just repost things without carefully checking! If you aren't in a position to check carefully, better safe than sorry: don't repost it! Don't let these scams spread.

Pro tip: If a blog is dash only, so you can't view their archive to see when their first post was made, and you're on desktop, you can just open the blog in its dashboard view, then click 'end' on your keyboard over and over until all their posts are loaded. Usually if it's a spam blog, you'll only need to click 'end' 5-6 times, sometimes a bit more, since they only post just enough times to give the appearance they're active, then there's absolutely nothing after that.

If you want more proof someone is a scammer, you can look at the currency they use their post (or the currency shown in the vet bill), then hover over the paypal link and inspect the part of the url that says 'country.x=AA'. The 'AA' is the abbreviation for the country your money is going to! If that country doesn't match the country of the currency shown in the post, it's a scam! Example: someone's post says '$' for USD/CAD dollars, but the country in their paypal link is 'PH', which stands for Philippines, where they use Philippine pesos, not dollars!

Also keep in mind that these are not bots! There is a real person behind these accounts. They have replied to people who wanted to confirm they were real, but their intentions are still to scam you, they just know it looks better if they reply.

Joost absolutely loves cuddle time. Anytime you or Aggu are laying or sitting back Joost always jumps at the chance to lay with you. Your and Aggu’s camera rolls are filled with pictures of Joost snuggled into either of your sides. He loves to lay his head on your or Aggu’s chests. Whenever he lays on Aggu Aggu will play with his hair soothing Joost to sleep.

Aggu’s the type to play a claw machine or carnival game a thousand times if you or Joost see a prize you like. That man will be concentrated as fuck trying his hardest to get you or Joost some stuffed animal that probably costs five bucks but Aggu spent thirty just playing the damn game over and over again.

After begging the boys to bake with you over and over they eventually gave in. You cheered as the three of you headed out to grab a few missing ingredients. As soon as you got back home you raced to preheat the oven and get started. Within five minutes all hell broke loose. The kitchen was an absolute mess, they’re was flour everywhere, Joost had dumped a bowl of dry ingredients over top of Aggu’s head because he thought it would be funny. In retaliation Aggu poured the rest of the bag of flour on Joost, but the second you tried to scold them they both declined to team up against you. Both boys decided to grab the closet dry ingredient to them and completely covered you. For the rest of the night the three of you had a food fight and got no baking done.

They both have a million pet names they use. They have nicknames both in English and their native languages. Aggu usually calls you shantz, liebe, Prinzessin, Shöne, or mein leben. He usually calls Joost babe, prinz, Süße, Kuschelwanze, or liebling. Joost usually calls you perziken, liefde, or Schatje. He usually calls Aggu Aggie, honing, or knap. If you don’t speak German or Dutch it took a lot of begging from you for them to tell you what the nicknames meant, obviously you had an idea but you were never certain until they finally told you.

They’ve both made songs for you and each other that they’ll never release because they like to keep some things private and they think it’s more meaningful that way. And if you make music as well you do the same for them.

They’re both the type to ask for five more minutes. You’ll wake up and not want to just lie in bed all day so you’ll try to stand up just for both men to hold you down muttering something along the lines of “five more minutes” or “its too early”.

You three have a lot of movie and game nights. Either you three cuddle up on the couch watching a movie (that took twenty minutes for the three of you to agree on) with blankets and snacks. Or you all let out your competitive sides and get out some cards and poker chips, kisses are also accepted as a form of currency in your guys’ game nights. After all it isn’t about the money it’s about totally destroying your boyfriends in every game you play. They always accuse you of cheating, but that’s never the case, esp when Joost runs out of Monopoly money fifteen minutes in and pays rent with small kisses. Who are you and Aggu to disqualify the blonde from playing?

You three always have the most fun on dates, you go to a fancy dinner, a walk in the park, get some ice cream, that sort of thing. It’s almost always a simple date but you three somehow always manage to make it the funnest night ever. Every date tops the one before it.

Haters definitely get to Joost, he doesn’t like seeing comments talking about how much people don’t like him so sometimes after Joost has been scrolling through those kinds of comments he goes to you and Aggu for comfort, after all you two are the only two who make him feel truly loved and safe.

After Joost got disqualified from Eurovision he made it your three’s hotel room as fast as possible and just collapsed on the floor crying. When you and Aggu made it home to see a puffy eyed and red faced Joost you both knelt on the floor next to him doing your best to soothe him until he could speak. As soon as he said what happened Aggu threatens to march down there and beat the shit out of the people who hurt his boyfriend.

The last two are a little sad but I hope I did good. I don’t get to write a lot of fluff because I don’t think I can do it very well but I’m such a sappy person, a true hopeless romantic.

Reminder on how to spot a scam blog or pet scam blog

Check the date of the pinned post. It will either be very new or a week old but otherwise still relatively recent.

Does the ask tell you to answer privately? If the post is public, there should be no reason to ask this unless the sender is hiding something.

Search the username in tumblr search. Does anything pop up? This can be warnings from other users or asks sent that was warning other users.

Search the ask in tumblr search. Was the ask sent to multiple users within a short time period? This usually shows older blogs that sent the same ask.

Check how many posts the blog has. Usually there’s only a sparse amount here and there in order to look more legitimate since most users don’t look too far into accounts

If there’s a vet bill, does it match the country listed in their support link? If the local currency doesn’t match the requested one, then it’s likely the account isn’t the real owner. Scammers like to impersonate real people but never can supply proof their legit.

If timestamps are on, see if the source of the original post date matches up with the reblog of posts. Backdating posts is another tactic to make a blog look older.

Lastly, if still unsure, ask the account to provide a picture of the animal with their name on a piece of paper. Ask them why their support link doesn’t match the vet location. They might lie to you, but that’s typical.

brandi how's your job how's your life? <3

ahh it's super good right now!!! i honestly love my job in a way i never expected to. i just had my first manager check-in meeting and they're really happy with the work i've done so far, so my trial period is over and i'm officially on the team :3 i'm finally starting to feel confident in what i'm doing at work, all my coworkers are exactly my vibe (we're all awkward introverts who use cute pet pictures as social currency), i get to brush up on my spanish constantly and i'm even learning some ASL because one of my coworkers is deaf!! i'm learning soooo much, my brain literally hurts from everything i'm trying to take in at once, but i'm beyond thankful for the opportunities i've been given!! because truthfully it was getting dark for a minute there. but in just the past few months i have completely turned my life around and i actually have the motivation to continue improving myself :')

the only bad thing is i get hit on by old men every single fucking day because i'm the only somewhat feminine young woman working in the warehouse so what can you do lol (although the coworker who trained me is gay and he gets his fair share of creepy old men so whenever it happens we just look at each other and laugh.. or if we're not together we'll get on the walkie and be like "add one to my tally" sjfkjsd it helps lessen the gross factor)

She disappointed him for the last time.

Raphael considers himself a generous patron, even-tempered, and endlessly patient. No, he does not come calling at first sight of the little mouse's indiscretions. He waits, a snake coiled in the dark, to gauge her intent. He does not bat an eye when she first crosses the threshold into the House of Hope. He'll call it mortal curiosity. 

He's amused when she makes use of Haarlep, feeling the phantom sensation of her cunt spasming around his cock. The little thing breathes his incubus' name in the throes of passion, but he feels the truth: desire for him, hungry and ill-suited for a hero. 

Two missteps in quick succession.

And then the little dear makes a critical error, the only sin he might have called to account: she betrays him. Trust is not a currency a devil deals in, not truly, but he's placed a degree of it upon her shoulders. He treats her fairly and constructs a partnership! And then, this. 

And he cannot allow it to stand, can he? Not as a creature of order. Not as a master of law. 

Raphael reclines in his seat, casting a glance to his right. His mouse hangs suspended, a delicious gift strung up in silver chains. Blood trickles from the mangled ruin of her hands, cutting rivulets down bare skin and precious metal alike. So lovely, his Tav. He's carved fresh ruins in the delicate skin of her belly, painstakingly elegant infernal. It must burn in the open air. 

"Are we paying attention, pet? This lesson is for your benefit." 

She doesn't speak or can't. The poor thing's chin rests on her sternum, the muscles in her neck straining. She's looking so worrisomely pale. He lifts a claw, dragging it across the inside of her ankle. Blood still rushes to the surface, but the trickle into his goblet is slower. 

"Haarlep. A drink for our guest." 

The incubus snickers. They move around the table with an exaggerated sway, holding the healing draught to their toy's lips. She whimpers and tries to turn her head away. Haarlep snarls, squeezing his jaw until Raphael hears the bones click. The message is quite clear: open, or they'll break it. The incubus doesn't give them time to adjust; they pour the water down their gullet, leaving them choking, sputtering, and screaming. 

Raphael rests his chin on his hand, cooing. "Oh, how shortsighted of me. I quite forgot." 

The healing is arguably worse. Tav's flesh tries to pull shut, but the hooks are already set. It's new skin closing around the barbs and tearing all over again. His little mouse howls. 

Raphael strokes the inside of her calf, touching it with deceptive tenderness—a lover's caress. The cambion smiles. He takes his goblet and drinks deeply, the sweetness of her blood washing over his tongue. A treat, a prize, compensation for his efforts and the resources he's lost.

This face—vacant and open, touchable, soft skin and fine hairs and curves of flesh that resembled their own—would decay. Already, it had. This was the uncomfortable truth boring into them as an unflinching stare from mortality’s own eyes. Water and time had begun the work, even as the red paint obscured much. Death reshaped her. It gave her a mask. The mask transfixed because it was her, but every second spent gazing at it haunted them.

Face to face, there was no distance from the fact that she was dead. Hands that once cradled them turned to stone as they gripped her ankles. Lips that uttered loving words refused to part. All warmth had long left, taking with it the possibility of a comforting embrace. She was cold and waxlike now—freakish in her naturality, entrancing and repulsive. Clinging, grabbing, kissing, petting, they were desperate to embody the finality of this farewell. She did not return their affection.

While the people of Uspana gathered to honor the princess, the family turned inward to conducted this ritual in private. A priest offered wisdom and ruminations as they wept. Beatriz laid stones of jade at her feet. They would accompany her into the first of her graves—currency in the underworld and necessary for any traveler. She and Matias wrapped themselves around the corpse and cried, not truly for their daughter, but for their loss. They all understood it was their duty to send her off in the proper way. Her body demanded care, and they gave it. Yet, through each motion, that distance remained. She felt nothing, and every touch was a comfort to themselves, even as the very reality of absence denied them any solace.

Later, they made offerings as her effigy, carved wood and painted red and attired in Safya’s things, was set ablaze. Her true body would go away with less catharsis. It would change like seasons. Some of the family would return in twenty years to collect the bones. Others, they supposed, may return sooner. When they did return to this place, they prayed to do so having been themselves, in some essential way, changed.

How to recognize an art scam?

1. Hi can you draw a picture of my son and his pet? I'll pay you anything what are your prices?

That's the most common question I got several times on other websites. Whether you gave prices or not they won't look into it. They never looked at your account, in fact. They pish you into making high prices for them to get refunded later.

2. They don't follow you, or they didn't like your art a while ago.

When you're commissioning an artist, it's because you enjoy their art. The least you'd normally do is give their art likes, comments, or follow you.

3. Just do it

A normal client would totally understand your suspicions and would prove they're not a scammer by explaining what they like in your art. For example, the choice of color palette, the graphic paw (funny way to say signature style), etc. They can also make you feel guilty about your questions. Don't.

4. They'll insist on a certain payment method that could give them advantages, and/or pay you AFTER.

Okay, let's say you're gonna buy bread. The baker hands you your baguette. You are right in front of them, so it's okay to pay after.

Now, you are asking for a developer to make you a script. They have no guarantee that you are real, nor that you are honest. It's normal for them to ask you to pay them first. Or 50% before 50% in the middle.

If you take PayPal, don't. They have a 180d refund policy, and even if the client was hobest at first, PayPal is by the buyer's side and not yours. It doesn't matter if you did the commission, the buyer CAN be refunded.

Solutions?

KYC. Know Your Customer. Sniff shady customers. But it's not really 100% working.

Use a middleman. This one decreases trust from the buyer's side but someone who has seen your commissions before and trusts you from the beginning wouldn't be too affected.

Make them sign an online contract before the commission. A lawyer can make you one or you can make one yourself. Email them, and if they're not a scammer they would sign it. Then you could contact PayPal in case of refund with this contract that person signed with their REAL information + their username and PayPal acc.

Ask for CRYPTOCURRENCY or set up a private XMR <your crypto currency> wallet. Few people really use crypto though.

DMCA them in case they use your art after refusing to pay you. Keep reverse-searching (Google Lens/Images) your art after getting scammed. As long as you have screenshots of the conversation with the client, you have all rights to do so.
