High on Our History!!

What an oldie but a goodie!! Back in the day @mercurial-madhouse and I were indulging in our infatuation with unhealthy relationships that hinge on toxic codependency. I was inspired to dive into a twisted version of childhood friends to lovers, and I even posted what could be considered the ‘first chapter’ of it as a tiny little one shot vignette, but I’ve left it in my WIPS with a few extra scenes and half a plot I might spin into something one day!

Here’s a little look:

He did try, on a few disastrous occasions, to push forward. He blocked Harry’s number and changed his locks and met a girl with a pretty smile. She smelled like flowers and kissed like rain and Louis liked her well enough, but it didn’t take long for his skin to itch. His mother wanted him to move on, bring someone sweet around for tea and pop out some grandkids. Liam just wanted him to be happy. But Louis didn’t need the warm glow of happy. He needed the painful burn of Harry Styles.

The Top of Your Lungs is the sequel to my recent fantasy werewolf a/b/o fic! It features full shift ‘wolves and my first dabbling with the heroes journey plot structure. I’ve had the whole thing plotted out since I wrote and posted the first half, but life has taken me on a crazy ride and I haven’t had as much (or any) time to actually write it all down. It’s my big hope to have it complete and posted by the end of the year!!

Here is a little snip:

“… I know the pack does not trust me, and you are rightful to hold this concern.”

“We are thankful for you.” She says, not denying his statement.

The sentiment itches like an insect along his skin. Louis wants to shake it off immediately.

“I do not want thanks, I want you to live.” He bites into his cold meal, hardly tasting the mouthful. “This pack is my only chance of survival.”

A spark in her eye defies the tone of his warning. She is humouring him when she stands to collect the meagre mess of the meal. “Mmmhm, the pack,” She hums, curiously looking elsewhere with a pointed pause, forcing Louis to see what she is looking at.

Harry. He’s turned to speak with the boy from yesterday, Adam Mckinnon, in quiet tones. The words are lost in the low rumble of the room full of people, yet Harry’s distinct stress on consonants and deep tone of his voice is a noticeable vibration easy to distinguish from the rest of the noise.

“You are no different than the rest of us, you know.” Louis stiffens at the small wisp of breath against his skin. He turns to find Perrie has leaned in close to whisper privately, a sobering nakedness to her expression. “He is our only hope.”

round up // NOVEMBER 23 + DECEMBER 23 + JANUARY 24: CROWD vs. CRITIC vs. CHRISTMAS!

November and December push me to the limit—how many movies can I fit in before the end of the calendar year? In 2023 (plus a few bonus days), the answer was more than 130 new releases. And who wants to skip all of their favorite Christmas movies? Because I extend my holiday viewing into January, I fit in almost 90 this year, adding a few more to my all-time must-watch list. Once the Oscar noms were announced, I was already back to my usual shenanigans and had watched my 400th unique movie on Turner Classic Movies. Whether these statistics are cool or pathetic (erm, don’t tell me), I’m grateful for the slowness of Dump-uary and the depth that comes with thinking about the same Oscar-nominated films for several weeks. (Too bad we need to revisit Melissa Villaseñor’s Oscars snub song from SNL.)

To help sum up these three packed months, I’m resurrecting Crowd vs. Critic vs. Christmas: five crowd-pleasers, five critic picks, and five Christmas treats. Who says you can’t make these holiday recommendations part of your February entertainment?

2. Triple Feature - Big City Crime Thrillers: No Way Out (1987) + Cop Land (1997) + Widows (2018)

The stars aligned on all of these! In No Way Out (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10), Kevin Costner is assigned to investigate the murder of his secret lover (Sean Young) in Washington D.C. The twist? The person who assigned him the case was also her lover, Secretary of Defense Gene Hackman. In Cop Land (9/10 // 7.5/10), Sylvester Stallone sheriffs a New Jersey town that houses a corrupt batch of New York City cops (including Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert Patrick) that Robert De Niro is investigating. In Widows (8.5/10 // 8.5/10), Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Rodriguez are completing the heist that killed their husbands (including Liam Neeson) in a corrupt Chicago run by Robert Duvall, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Daniel Kaluuya. All are twisty, gritty, and thrilling.

3. Godzilla Minus One (2023)

Oh no, there goes Tokyo—but at least it’s going to a spectacle as fun and well-crafted as this one. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10

4. Double Feature - ‘90s Matt Damon Dramas: School Ties (1992) + The Rainmaker (1997)

Because Matt Damon has always been good! Though he’s not always been the good guy: In School Ties (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10), Brendan Fraser must hide his Jewish identity to survive at a prep school in the ‘50s, and bullies like Damon are who he’s most afraid of. In The Rainmaker (9/10 // 8.5/10), Damon is the good guy as a baby-faced lawyer who wants to protect Claire Danes, Teresa Wright, and Mary Kay Place from villains like slick lawyer Jon Voight. Here’s hoping Damon has another coming-of-age movie (as a teacher) and legal thriller in his future.

5. The Jerk (1979)

Not every moment of this movie would fly if made today, but Steve Martin’s episodic adventures in his first journey away from home gave me some of my biggest laughs in months. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10

More Holiday Crowd-Pleasers: Three Men and a Little Lady (1990) reminds us how much fun it is to let three charismatic movie stars (Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and Tom Selleck) cook // The Mrs. Doubtfire National Tour is fluffy fun // Maggie Moore(s) (2023) is a true crime story that makes me wish Tina Fey and Jon Hamm could become the new Myrna Loy and William Powell // Quiz Lady (2023) lets Will Ferrell live out his Alex Trebek dreams // John Mulaney in Concert Tour is making me count down till his next special is released to get memes about his grandfather, his bus driver, and his son // Reacher Season 2 is the perfect action show to watch with my dad // I’m not sure if Man of the Year (2006) was prescient about the future of politics or if it just understood human nature well enough to anticipate the populist movement and election fraud conversations we’re having today, but this Robin-Williams-as-Jon-Stewart comedy is underrated // The real-world implications of V for Vendetta (2005) are…confusing, but this literary-inspired adventure is still thrilling // Desperado (1995) is an over-the-top, shoot-'em-up Western

1. The Best of 2023

2023: a year of products, greed, put-upon employees, and artificial intelligence—and not just in the actors’ and writers’ strikes! It was also a great year for movies, which is why I couldn’t narrow down my list to just 10. 2. Double Feature - New Baseball Documentaries: It Ain’t Over (2022) + The League (2023)

I am not a Yankees fan, so who would have guessed that the Yogi Berra documentary It Ain’t Over (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) would make me cry? And my baseball history knowledge always has room for improvement, so The League (8/10 // 9/10) is a phenomenal fix to many of my blind spots. Both are now inducted in my Baseball Movie Hall of Fame.

3. Triple Billing - Come From Away + Tina: The Tina Turner Musical + Funny Girl National Tours

Looking for a true story turned into an excellent musical? Try Come From Away, which captures the chaos of flights rerouted on 9/11 with the pathos you expect (and the comedy you don’t). Or try Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, which is one of the best—if not the best—jukebox musical I’ve seen because the songs are integrated into the story instead of just as a musical revue of a a well-known career. Or catch Funny Girl, which captures comedienne Fanny Brice’s life with the help of a powerhouse singer channeling Barbra Streisand’s powers. Better yet, I recommend not skipping any of them when they come to town if you can swing it.

4. Happiness Falls by Angie Kim (2023)

What do you do when your dad goes missing in the middle of a global pandemic and the only one who was with him when he disappeared is your non-verbal brother? That’s the central mystery of Angie Kim’s latest novel. Instead of an edge-of-your-seat-thriller, it’s a story that propels us forward with the questions that plague its characters.

5. Hollywood Victory: The Movies, Stars, and Stories of World War II by Christian Blauvelt (2021)

The Turner Classic Movies Library has yet to miss. Hollywood Victory doesn’t just provide an in-depth overview of Hollywood from 1933 to 1945. It’s an exploration of Hollywood’s inextricable relationship with American politics, its contributions that helped the Allies win the war, and a unusual but informative lens of movies and the war itself. It’s also a long set of additions to my watchlist—of the 260+ films referenced, I’ve only seen a quarter. Thank goodness for TCM and a DVR with unlimited space!

Holiday Treats

1. Ken The EP by Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson

I don’t care if these are barely Christmas songs—let’s give Ryan Gosling seasonal updates of “I’m Just Ken” for all of 2024!

2. Mixed Nuts (1994)

Hot take: Steve Martin has not been in enough rom-coms. A kookier—but nonetheless delightful—brand of Nora Ephron stars Martin and Rita Wilson as co-workers at a crisis hotline who are clearly meant for each other. If only they—and Madeline Kahn, Juliette Lewis, Adam Sandler, Liev Schreiber, and Garry Shandling— could get out of their own way. Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10  

3. Fitzwilly (1967)

Christmas Ocean’s Eleven! Dick Van Dyke is as charming as ever and the vibes are as ‘60s as ever as he tries to pull off a heist at Gimbels on Christmas Eve. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10

4. Metropolitan (1990)

Before Chris Eigeman was Jason Stiles on Gilmore Girls, he was essentially playing the same character in Whit Stillman’s comedy riff on The Great Gatsby. A young, bougie group is attempting to survive debutante season (also the Christmas season), debating the pros and cons of wealth and falling in and out of romance. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10

5. The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek (1944)

Hollywood Victory informed me I’m not the only who can’t believe this was allowed to play for audiences in 1944! Betty Hutton marries a soldier on a whim, but the next morning she can’t remember which one. Her BFF with an unrequited crush (Eddie Bracken) is the only one who can help her figure out who her husband—and the father of her child—is before the scandal gets out and destroys her reputation. Because this is a Preston Sturges feature, it’s actually a hilarious quest. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10

More Christmas Treats: Klaus (2019) is a hidden gem on Netflix // Okay, the ick factor in Susan Slept Here (1954) is real, but Dick Powell and Debbie Reynolds are just so darn charming! // 8-Bit Christmas (2021) is a better-than-it-needed-to-be update of A Christmas Story featuring a Nintendo instead of a BB gun // How did I never see Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) all the way through before this year? Once I realized I’d missed some scenes in my umpteen cable watches over the years, it shot up on my John Hughes rankings // Pocketful of Miracles (1961) is a delightful Cinderella tale that proves Bette Davis always had it

STMNTS – Tendencies

The music business is a very unforgiving place. The window of opportunity to make a mark in the music world appears to be getting slimmer by the day, so it’s of the utmost importance to deliver your best material as consistently as possible. Easier said than done, right? The new Baltimore punk band, STMNTS, are well up to the task of delivering the goods on their vibrant new EP called Tendencies. The slick five-song record is filled with anthemic moments, crisp guitar tones, and well-timed vocals/harmonies to make the EP remain memorable. With a sound that fits well within the realm of the crunchy guitar riffing of Four Year Strong, to the sensitive side of The Wonder Years, paired with the great emo production of Bayside, STMNTS are taking full advantage of their time. This band makes emo/punk music look effortless, and it’s quite a fun listening experience. The record opens in near-chaos as you hear the band getting their sea legs set right before launching into some crunchy guitar riffs similar to punk veterans, Four Year Strong. What STMNTS do well on the opener is to pace the song appropriately and know just when to dial things back so that vocalist Liam King can sing passionately above the guitars. Things continue to remain interesting on the title track, that features a great dual-guitar attack from Drew Chiodo and Jamie Black. King continues to command the vocals and makes his presence felt far and wide on each of his passionately-sung bars. Add in a picturesque ballad in the form of “Meantime,” that is expertly sandwiched in the middle of the hardest hitting tracks, and STMNTS continue to showcase their impressive songwriting craft not usually seen on a debut record. Jeff McKinnon’s production is top-notch on songs like this, and he captures the vibe the band was seeking out nicely. “Handpainted” follows the campfire ballad with mid-tempo verses building up to another anthemic, and crowd-pleasing chorus. EP closer, “Past Tense” allows for some crowd participation in the rhythmic guitar verses, paired with the steady beat provided by drummer Shawn Smyth, to continue the acceleration of getting this band out in the forefront of conversations of a “band to watch” as this year unfolds. You get the feeling that this band could be big, really quickly, especially if they get placed on a tour that showcases what makes them so damn special. I, for one, will be passionately cheering them on from the sidelines to ensure this becomes their reality. ✖ Have you seen him? He’s so nice and handsome and funny, and he plays Quidditch like a god. It’s hard to believe he’s even real! ✖ The McKinnon’s very own golden boy. Must be hard for any of his siblings to grow up under such a shadow. ✖ He’s broken so many hearts it’s ridiculous. One day someone will come and set him on the right path. Otherwise he’ll always be a player.

Liam McKinnon was brought into the world under the light of a shooting star, or at least that’s how his mother tells the story. The son that his father wished to have, Liam was raised as the first of the next generation of McKinnons. The title came with liberties that afforded him plenty of freedoms a traditional upbringing of a pureblood would not have accommodated for. And as a child, he freely exercised his freedoms, and leaned against the warm boundaries and took the warmth to heart. Running shirtless in the back garden, scraped knees, dirt under finger nails – all characteristic of an afternoon in the McKinnon home. For a household that did have standing and wealth, the McKinnons did little to flaunt such privilege. But rather, Liam lived a comfortable, even charmed lifestyle, presented opportunities and willingly taking them with two hands.

In such a warm and generous environment, it is not difficult to see how such a home raise a well-tempered man. A confident man whom had long ago determined what he believed was right and wrong. He stood firm with his family and their stance regarding blood purity, and even being labelled a blood traitor, Liam was prepared to defend his family at any turn. Though he was certainly not the free spirit of the family, that title to bear rested firmly with Marlene, Liam had his spirited nuances, a similar passion burned within Liam, but it rarely reared its head past the Quidditch pitch.

It was once he had began his education at Hogwarts did the attention begin to find him, no matter what he did to down play it. Expectations were set high before he had set foot in the castle - his father being a notable member of staff in a professional Quidditch team, his mother being a former actress. A number of people were surprised to meet a simple boy, with simple ambitions as the son of such parentage. Liam had set himself three simple tasks to achieve during his time at Hogwarts: do what leads to happiness, be just and fair to all, and be a friend to those who want one. His genuine warmth and modesty that seemed to charm many put him in the amicable sights of some, others found him as someone to be wary of.

For a boy who didn’t wish to stick out, he did little in action to help his cause. He found himself comfortable with his school work, and having the time of his life after making the Gryffindor Quidditch team in his Third Year. He even stuck out as one of the tallest in his year, his limbs seemingly too long for his body until he returned to Hogwarts for his Sixth Year. By which time, he had been appointed Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, a post he had long revered. The least favourable point of attention that he bore was that of his romantic pursuits. It seemed as though he had cultivated a reputation that he never wished to bear. Simply, his prior relationships had not been sustainable, for one reason or another. And with the likes of his family, the press and the Pureblood community watching over his shoulder with his romantic life, Liam had long ago let go of the dream that he could live a private life. He does his best to not let the prying eyes bother him, and continue living his life as he wishes, allowing his whims to lead him to travel the breadth of the globe at a moment’s notice.

Only a smattering of detentions during his Hogwarts career. Most for snap decisions in his adolescence. A few others for being caught out of bed past curfew, with company. But for the most part, his school record is compiled with doting comments of professors for his manners and attention. Some professors commented that he is more daring than he leads many to believe, but only those who know him best would notice what lay behind the Golden Boy image he seemingly epitomised.

A hard yet fair captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Liam despised losing, his competitive nature underscored his unwavering desire to win. He guided the Gryffindor team to numerous successes, and even managed to catch the attention of a few Quidditch commentators in the UK professional league. Following his graduation, he met with a number of teams, trialled for as many as he could. But all offers for Chaser places paled in comparison to the meeting he had with Montrose. The team he supported ever since he was a young boy, the team his father would aid and care for, the players he grew up trying to keep up with as a boy by the side of the pitch, watching his father at work. He could not have put ink to parchment any sooner, as he signed as their rookie intake for the year.

His debut year at Montrose was filled with expectations, most placed by Liam on himself to contribute to the team he loved so passionately. It was a difficult transition, to be a Chaser in a professional team coming from his humble roots in Hogwarts. And yet, he excelled. With the support of his sisters in the stands, and the assurance from his father in the wings - he soared. His debut gained him notable attention, past that he ever could imagine. He believed he had reached his peak in attention when he scored 60 points in a match against Slytherin, and had a party thrown in the Common Room. But to have press chatter about him, and to have people recognise him was a rude awakening for an otherwise simple boy. Liam leaned on his family for support during this time more than any, relying on their unconditional support and their humbling words, as he battled being in the public eye. His father remains his harshest critic, and Liam respects his honest and fair assessments more than anyone’s. His family keep him grounded, when it would be very easy to believe in his own hype and float into the realm of fame.

As he gained more experience, and became a regular fixture in the Montrose starting line up, Liam began to learn how to work off of the pressure and expectations, channelling the nervous energy he felt into his playing. This year, following the retirement of his idol, his captain, he was given the responsibility to lead his team into the season as their new captain. A young choice, and yet, Liam has greeted the challenge with open arms, and broom in hand. Although he considered taking on the captaincy to be the largest forthcoming challenge he could anticipate, the world around him as begun to shift in a way he and his family have dreaded ever since being labelled Blood Traitors. He finds himself at an interesting cross roads, one where his friends and family are throwing their behind a just cause. He isn’t prepared to take up arms just yet, ever hopeful that a peaceful resolution can be found. But as time continues, and the tensions escalate, he is finding it more difficult to sit on his hands and remain hopeful.
