Two Sides of a Holiday Coin
I’m not big on holiday films. At least not straight-forward ones. To give you an idea, one of my favorites is still Rare Exports and, of course, Die Hard. I didn’t grow up with holidays mirroring the typical, and I balk at saccharine sentiment. It makes it hard to get through the end of year celebrations as there are few options offered up. However a couple did make it through this year. And both were unexpected treats in their own ways.
Round and Round
This Channukah tale has a couple things going for it. First, Channukah…there just aren’t many flicks based on this holiday that aren’t veiled for xmas or that include xmas as well. I can’t say my childhood was anything like what is depicted in this Stacey N. Harding and Tamar Laddy offering, but there was enough I recognized that I could enjoy the representation. The other, and probably more important aspect, is that this is a time-loop tale. My Achilles heel. It isn’t as convoluted or as complicated as the kinds I usually enjoy (see Looper or Palm Springs or similar) but the plot point has a purpose and is executed in a clever and entertaining way.
Add to it the winning, if tenuous, tension between Vic Michaelis and Bryan Greenberg with a slew of solid supporting cast and it’s a fun 90 minutes with plenty of nerd-out joy. Again, this isn’t brilliant but it’s different enough to make it fun. And good enough to recommend.
Candy Cane Lane
Eddie Murphy (Coming to America) hasn’t had much to show off in the last decade. But this silly bit of holiday, literal, magic by Reginald Hudlin and Kelly Younger hits the spot. It focuses on family even though the plot aspect revolves around holiday decorations. It’s all more than a little silly, something Jillian Bell (I’m Totally Fine) embraces with evil joy, but it ultimately delivers without too much teeth aching.
Honestly, there isn’t much else to say about it. It is enjoyable and manages to throw in a few surprises. But mostly it just a nice riff on a modern Christmas tale with just enough wry grit to keep it from hurting your teeth.

Eddie Murphy discusses the "Christmas spirit" and how it is the "best time to reconnect with family and friends" ahead of the release of Candy Cane Lane.
Eddie Murphy's upcoming Christmas flick Candy Cane Lane will be released on December 1. Eddie Murphy, Reggie Hudlin, and Brian Grazer are ready to reconvene after 30 years for Candy Cane Lane, a hilarious, new Amazon original action-adventure twist on the Christmas movie genre. The video is set in El Segundo, California, near Los Angeles International Airport, and depicts an actual location that draws visitors every year to enjoy the spectacular Christmas displays. Eddie Murphy plays Chris, a man on a goal to win his neighborhood's annual Christmas home decorating contest who, unwittingly, strikes a bargain with a nefarious elf that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life.
Tumblr media
Nothing is more important to Murphy and his character Chris over the holidays than spending time with family. "When you get older it's harder and harder to feel that Christmas spirit, but it makes it much easier when you have the little ones around," says Murphy. "Christmas is the best time to reconnect with family, friends and the people who matter most to celebrate the good times." He hopes that this film preserves the Christmas spirit alive. Murphy's character, Chris Carver, is a family man who loves Christmas so much that he names all of his children after Christmas carols. "Every year, he goes all out, and then he loses his job." "Right before Christmas, the bottom is pulled out from beneath him," Murphy adds. "He is going all out in his movie because he is on the verge of losing everything." Director Reginald Hudlin says that having the comic G.O.A.T on hand was crucial to making Candy Cane Lane the best movie could be. "This is my second time working with Eddie Murphy on a film, and there are a lot of great things that come with that." The first is, of course, that you work with Eddie Murphy, one of the most talented persons in our industry. The second reason is that everyone wants to work with Eddie Murphy, so you can find the best staff and performers to surround him with. As a result, I was able to make the film of my dreams." Candy Cane Lane, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Kelly Younger, will launch on Prime Video in India and 240+ countries and territories worldwide on December 1. The Christmas comedy, directed by Brian Grazer, starring Eddie Murphy, Karen Lunder, and Charisse Hewitt-Webster in crucial roles.

Hello! Day 12 of my advent calendar is more Christmassy like I promised lol but can you believe destiel went canon for a third time wow okay well enjoy this story! Catch up on my domestic deancas advent calendar with this masterpost here!
Summary: The family goes to Christmas Tree Lane to show Jack the lights. Dean and Cas flirt with each other while Jack, the cutie that he is, tells some parents that their little girl is actually a boy. Enjoy!
Christmas Tree Lane.
That’s what they called these four blocks, maybe even more, of houses decorated so elegantly and yet haphazardly.  It was astonishing to see so many lights piled on these houses and the yards covered in fake angels or what they believe was that nativity scene.
‘It was much more unhygienic than what these people are showing us.’ He told Dean in annoyance after they passed their third one. Dean just squeezed his hand and called him old.
A house was decorated to look like an actual gingerbread house and Jack reminded them that they have yet to make theirs. Dean laughed as a grimace fell upon Cas’s face but he promised to do that with his son soon. As long as they went to buy the terrible boxed versions because he was not going through that breakdown again.
They were just about to cross the street when Dean let go of Cas’s hand. He expected to feel an arm around him or some other form to replace the loss of touch but nothing came. He turned around ready to complain only to see Dean had run off to help someone carry a stroller up the high sidewalk.
“Thank you so much!” The woman sighed with relief as she flashed his boyfriend a bright smile. “If only my husband can be just as diligent.”
She motioned for the man who was standing by Cas, taking pictures of the house over and over again, before sighing. “He promised a family day but of course work comes first for him.”
“Sorry,” Dean scratches the back of his beanie covered head. “I don’t know why he’ll be ignoring such a pretty thing like yourself and this little princess,” Dean looked into the strolled to see a wide-eyed baby staring back at him as they chewed on some teething rings. “She’s such a cutie.”
“Thank you.” The lady blushed because being complimented by Dean Winchester does that to people. “Her name is Rosie.”
“Rosie.” Dean smiled down at the baby before looking up at Cas, his smile leaving the formal angel breathless. “Babe! I want one.”
Cas shuffled his feet as he felt his face warm up at that loud announcement. His arms crossed over his chest while opening his mouth to say something but his voice was caught in his throat before he narrowed his eyes at Dean. He threw his head back and laughed while Cas tried to keep from looking so fondly at the love of his life.
He looks so beautiful, Cas thought to himself as he made his way over to where Dean stood.
“I’m so sorry if my husband,” Dean raised an eyebrow at that but then a smile broke through his shocked expression. “Is bothering you.”
The woman's expression was the usual shocked one that strangers give them when they announce they are together but her eyes were still warm so that’s a good sign. “Oh, no bother! He’s been a lovely gentleman.”
“Hear that?” Dean leans into him, a grin on his face. “A gentleman.”
Cas fights the urge to roll his eyes but smiles back at the woman. “That’s so kind of you to think so.”
“Hey, friends of yours?” Dean and Cas both turn towards the man who wraps his arm around the woman’s shoulders. She automatically shakes him off and shoots him a glare. He seemed to ignore her and tried to stare them down. “I’m Ryan. Luci’s husband.”
Dean wrapped one arm around Cas’s shoulders while taking Ryan’s outstretched hand in the other, a cocky smile on his face. “Dean. This is my husband, Cas.” Cas gave him a small nod while trying to keep the polite façade on. “Over there is our son, Jack.”
Dean points at Jack who was wandering inside the yard of the gingerbread houses with the other children following behind him. Running around while their parents tried catching them.
“Jack!” Cas called out to him to grab his attention before one of the parents started talking to him. Cas would sure regret losing his angel powers if he ever finds another person yell at his kid. Jack looked up at him and lifted his hand up to wave. “Come on, meet the baby!”
Jack waved goodbye at some of the children before he walked over back to them. He waved up at the couple, Luci waved and smiled back at him and Cas instantly liked her.
“Oh, Rory!” Jack looked down at the baby, his eyes soft with familiarity. “He’s gonna be so happy when he’s older.” Jack looks up at them with a smile. “You two would be great parents to him.”
“She.” Ryan corrected him, softly as if not sure himself now when Jack sounded so confident.
Jack shakes his head. “No, I clearly remember-”
Dean shared a look with Cas knowing it was probably just the God magic in him that could read souls that Jack was referring too. Maybe not the best time to tell these parents about their baby’s future. Cas put his hands on Jack’s shoulders to pull him back to him before Jack opened his mouth to continue to explain.
“Jack, honey, how about let’s get some hot chocolate.” He started ushering Jack away towards a tent at the end across the street. He turned towards the couple. “Nice meeting both of you.”
“Oh, bye!” Jack waved at them. “Thanks for being so understanding. He will love you both so much!”
“Jack.” Cas quietly sighed before meeting Dean’s eyes for him to hurry up.
Dean gave an awkward laugh before saying his own goodbye and rushing towards Cas’s side.
“Kid, you can’t go around outing a damn baby.” Jack looks back at Dean with a confused but cute look on his face, mimicking Cas’s own little head tilt.
“I just wanted to congratulate them.” Jack defended himself as they walked over to the short line of what looks like crappy water down hot chocolate but something warm is exactly what they need right now. Plus, they were free. “Rory is going to do great things!”
Cas's smile was too fond as he looked at his own kid. Remembering when he was still in Kelly’s stomach and knowing Jack would do great things as well. Believing and loving him throughout it all.
“I believe you.” Cas tells him as he brings Jack into a hug. “Rory will be amazing. Just like you.”
Jack chuckled as Cas left kisses on the side of his face. “Dad, stop!”
“We can talk more about your soul readings later.” Dean tells him as they reach the front of the line. The lady at the front looked at them strangely before she smiled and asked how many they would want.
They walked the rest of Christmas Tree Lane. Watching Jack go excitingly from house to house already getting ideas to decorate their house for next year. Dean walked around with his arms around Cas’s waist as he hugged him from behind. Leaving kisses on his cheek and wherever else he can reach as the night dragged on.
“Husband huh?” Dean hummed into his ear as they walked back to the car with Jack finding new things to point out from the houses they just saw.
“Maybe...if you’ll finally propose to me again then maybe we can make that a reality.” Cas didn’t turn to look back at him, knowing Dean was already rolling his eyes.
“You’re such an asshole.” Dean muttered, a grin was pressed against Cas’s skin as he giggled when Dean nibbled at his cheek.
“Dad’s, can we drive past the lights this time?” Jack turned to look at them with a grin so big that neither of them can say no to him. Plus it gives Dean a chance to show off the reindeer antlers that Jack got for Baby.

Chapter 3 Part 1
Tumblr media
June 1999
Jensen parked his Dad’s ford on the drive at the side of Stella’s house and climbed out, the box containing her corsage which matched his boutonniere in his hand. Taking a deep breath he headed round the back of the house and into the kitchen, not bothering to knock as usual.
Stella’s mom was in the kitchen and she looked up at him, smiling.
“Oh my goodness, Jacob Calvin Jensen…you’ve always been a handsome young man but tonight…well, you look positively dapper!” he beamed.
“Thanks Jules.” Jake felt the heat in his cheeks as he blushed at her praise. “Is Stel ready?”
“She should be, she spent almost all afternoon locked in her room with Rey.”
“Oh, ok. Has she erm…got a bag for tonight?” Jake suddenly felt his mouth go dry, and he nervously scratched the back of his neck. What the fuck was wrong with him? Stella had stayed at his loads of times before and Jules had never batted an eyelid, hell he’d stayed here plenty too and not a word had been said. But now, he was suddenly feeling nervous. But as he looked at Stella’s mom she just smiled and stepped forward towards him. She reached out to straighten the grey and silver bow tie and looked at him.
“She’s special Jake, but you already know that.”
Ok so now he wanted the fucking ground to swallow him.
“Her bag’s in the hall.” Julie stepped back, patting the lapels of his jacket. Jake gave her another smile, set the box with Stella’s corsage down on the side and headed into the hall, taking the opportunity to escape for a moment as he took it to the car, slinging it into the trunk. He headed back inside and before he had to think of anything else to say to steer the conversation away from the fact that Jules knew full well he was planning on having sex with her daughter that night, he was saved by Aubrey who waltzed into the kitchen.
“God, she’s a nervous wreck.” Aubrey mumbled, “Being a right pain in the ass. I’ve done and redone her hair about fifty times.”
She grabbed a can of soda from the fridge, completely ignoring Jensen which was fine by him, and slumped down at the kitchen table.
Julie sighed “So were you at your prom!”
“That was because I was on for Prom Queen.” Aubrey shrugged. At that Jake rolled his eyes, he couldn’t care less about all that Prom Queen shit. As far as he was concerned he had the best girl on his arm. At that point Rey’s eyes flicked to him and she gave a little smile “Well, don’t you scrub up fine?”
“Well Stella told me if I wore my soccer kit she’d kill me” he shrugged and Rey snorted before she frowned.
“Where are your glasses?”
“Contacts” Jake shrugged “Don’t wear ‘em often other than for sport but…”
“Huh.” Rey shrugged.
“Is that everything or you wanna know what colour boxer shorts I’m wearing?” Jake quipped “Can show you if you like?”
“Jacob!” Julie looked at her and he flashed her a cheeky grin.
“For your information they’re black” he winked and then raised his wrist to check his watch. It was getting a little later than he wanted it to be now, but at that point besides him Julie gave a little gasp and he raised his head to see Stella stood in the doorway to the kitchen. Jake felt his moth drop open as he looked at her. He’d seen her dressed up before but never like this. Her dress was a deep blue satin with a pleated skirt that finished just below her knee. It tapered in at the waist and the bodice was lace, high necked and sleeveless with flower applique. On her feet she wore a pair of cream coloured peep-toe pumps that were decorated with little crystals along the arch and her blond hair was pulled back off her face into an elegant knot. Those blue eyes Jake could happily lose himself in popped under a smoky brown eyeshadow and her cheeks were expertly rouged.
She looked like a modern Grace Kelly, absolutely fucking amazing.
“Hi.” He stuttered, stepping towards her.
“Hey Jakey.” She smiled, a little shyly and at that point her mum gave a cough and gestured to the door with her head. Rey rolled her eyes and stood up, following her out as Julie shut the door to give the two of them a bit of privacy.
“Stel you look stunning.” He smiled, dropping his lips to hers in a soft kiss and she beamed at him.
“You don’t look so bad yourself.”
Jake smiled, and then suddenly remembered the box on the side “Oh, here…” he took her hand and led her after him before he picked it up and opened the top. Stella peered inside and then looked up at him.
“Petunia.” she chuckled.
“Well I know they’re your favourites.” He said, gently taking it out surprised to see his hands were shaking. “Right or left.”
“Erm left.” She said after a short deliberation, holding her hand out for him. “Less chance of me banging it.” Jake smiled and gently slipped the pearl-effect beads over her manicured fingers so that the flowers sat on her delicate wrist and she looked at it, smiling. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome babe.” He grinned and she leaned up to kiss him again. “So err, you wanna go. Your bag’s already in the car…and it’s almost 7 so…”
“Yeah, oh…Mom wanted a photo first. Your mom called her before demanding one so…”
Jake groaned “God she was crying when I left. Dad had to drag her back inside as she was waving the car away.”
Stella grinned “Well her baby’s all grown up.”
“Wouldn’t go that far.” He quipped and Stella shook her head with a laugh and headed for the door.
After Julie had gushed over the pair of them and taken what felt like enough photos to fill an entire album she pulled Stella into a hug and Jake stepped back, but not far enough as he still caught what Julie whispered to Stella.
“Your dad would be so proud of you sweetheart.”
“Mom.” Stella sniffed a little and Jake bowed his head, turning to look at Rey who was also surprisingly emotional. He flashed her a little wink and she smiled back as Stella turned to him.
“Ready?” he asked and she nodded. He took her hand and together they walked down the drive. He made sure he opened the car door for her, waiting till she adjusted her dress before shutting it and then hopped in the driver’s side.
Julie and Rey waved them off as he reversed onto the street before they pulled away.
“Oh, before I forget who did you have in the sweepstake for starting the first fight?” Jake asked as he turned left at the top of her street.
“Simon Rogers.” Stella said.
“Rogers?” Jake frowned, “Seriously?”
“Yup” she nodded “He might be small but he’s vicious. Plus Vinnie Foxborough has asked Jenny Marchant to be his date, and we all know she was dating Rogers like a month ago. It’s going off, I’m telling you.”
**** An hour or so after arriving, the Prom was in full swing. They’d done the usual posing for photos upon arrival and headed straight to grab a drink before navigating to the table their group of friends had already claimed. Stel had then headed off to go speak to a few of the girls from her hockey team whilst Jensen had stood with the captain of his soccer squad and a few of the other guys from the team. Eventually they’d worked their way back to one another as the announcements and general fuss started regarding Prom King and Queen. It came as no surprise to anyone who was named, Stacey Holbrook-popular girl number 1 and Will Brady- popular guy number 1. Jensen gave an exaggerated yawn as cheers rang out around the Sports Hall. Stella looked at him, arching an eyebrow as she sat in the chair next to him round their table, his arm slung casually over the back of her chair. He shrugged and grinned as he watched them both take to the stage, a hush fell over the room. Stacey began gushing into the mic, her words vaguely registered in Jensen’s mind as she squealed about how surprised and honoured she was…bla bla bla.
He wouldn’t have minded either, but in Jake’s eyes, she wasn’t a patch on the girl sat to his right. He moved his hand from the back of Stella’s chair, gently placing it round her shoulders and pulling her into him, pressing a kiss to her temple. She looked at him and he flashed her a wink as he reached for his soda. He took a loud gulp and sat back, and then before he could stop it a huge burp escaped his mouth. Jensen sat stock still as everyone in the hall turned in his direction, accusingly. Stella was sinking lower into her chair, trying to disappear but Jake sat up tall and spun round in his seat as if he too was searching for the culprit.
“Disgusting!” he called out loudly, shaking his head. “Whoever that was should be ashamed of themselves.”
A few titters broke out across the hall and he spotted his Football coach smirking at him as he turned back to look at Stella who had her hand slapped over her forehead.
“You’re a fucking nightmare.” She hissed at him.
“I couldn’t help it!” he whispered back. “Better out than in as my dad always says…” As it turns out that was just one of the 2 reasons Jake found himself having to talk his way out of trouble that night. The second however, Jake was pleased to report was Stella’s fault. He was stood talking a few guys from the soccer team when John Digby, their right-back and captain suddenly nudged Jake.
“What?” Jake asked, looking at him. John nodded over his shoulder and Jake turned to see Stella was in an angry exchange with the captain of the football team. A huge, hulking jock that played quarterback called Brad Kingsley.  He watched for a second, grinning as the huge guy seemed actually quite frightened of Stella who was jabbing him in his chest but then as he spotted Brad’s girlfriend stalking towards them he gave a groan. “Ahh shit. Be right back…”
“Good luck with that!” John shot after him as the team laughed “Your Misssus is fuckin’ scary…”
“Don’t I know it.” Jensen mumbled as he jogged over to where quite a crowd was gathering now, just in time to hear Stell call Brad a fucking asshole. “Hey, hey…” Jensen said gently, grabbing her arm. She turned to look at him and he instantly saw the problem. The front of her dress, over the chest area was soaked.
“He just spilt his drink all over me, and not even a fucking apology!” she seethed.
“It was an accident!” Brad said, his voice loud.
“Fuck you!” Stella snarled and Jensen took a deep breath.
“Stel, babes, come on…” he consoled her a little, and she took one final glare at Brad, before she looked at Jensen, wrenching her arm free and stalked away. He watched her go for a bit before he turned back to Brad, seeing the guy was now cracking his knuckles ominously. What he lacked in brains, which was quite a lot actually- the guy was thick as two short planks- he made up for in brawn and whilst Jensen was more than capable of holding his own in a fight, he really didn’t fancy his chances here. “Brad, look man, I don’t want any trouble…” “I can’t hit women.” Brad shrugged “But I can give you a smack for your girl’s mouth…”
“Come on…you know what they’re like.” Jensen shrugged “Plus its shark week so….hormones…” he smoothed out the bigger man’s jacket before both his hands rest on his upper biceps, slapping them gently before he let go. “She rides the red river and it turns her into a fucking ogre. You wouldn’t really wanna hold that against me would you bro?” “Suppose not.” Brad mumbled. “Cheers pal, I owe you.” Jensen slapped his back as he made a hasty retreat, letting the air out of his lungs as he walked.
Thankfully, the rest of the evening passed with little to no drama and Jensen actually found it to be quite enjoyable. For the first time it dawned on him that this, well this really did signal the end of high-school and in 3 months, just over 12 weeks or so, he and Stella would be off to Norwich to start the ROTC for 4 years. He was looking forward to it- living away from home, the fun of College life whilst training with the Army and most of all having his best friend and girl by his side. Buoyed by the sudden feel good factor, he dragged Stella off to dance with their friends and the pair of them grinned when about 4 songs in the opening bars of Journey “Don’t Stop Believing” hit their ears and everyone on the dance floor gave a loud shriek.
“Well what do you know, they’re playing our song.” Jake grinned as he pulled Stella towards him.
“It’s odds on they’d play this.” She rolled her eyes, grinning as he began to sing in a stupid voice, twirling her around. She watched him as he ran through his usual dance moves to the song…pointing at everyone when he sang the word strangers, arching his hand upwards a little over his head like a rainbow to the word boulevard. By the time the song hit its crescendo their entire group of friends had joined in and Stella shook her head at him as he gave her a wink.
“You’re an idiot…” she said as the song finished and morphed into something by the Backstreet Boys that Jensen couldn’t remember the name of.
“But I’m your idiot, doll.” He grinned and she gave a laugh cocking her head to one side, her arms sliding up round his neck.
“Yeah, yeah you are…”
At that point they were both shoved violently to the side, Jensen grabbing Stella to stop her falling. He spun round, immediately ready to give whoever it was a warning to be careful when his eyes fell on Simon Rogers and Vinnie Foxborough who were both going hell for leather in the middle of the floor, fists flying as people rushed into separate them. With a  groan Jensen turned to Stella who was stood there, the rest of their friends also hanging their heads as she held her hand out, palm up. “Pay up, losers!” she grinned, and Jake snorted as Sally, Ewan, Brady, Mackenzie and Danny all reached into their purses or wallets and slapped five bucks into her hand each. She looked at Jake and he frowned.
“I’m not paying you.” He shook his head.
“Stop being a whiney bitch JJ.” She grinned and he shook his head again.
“I’ll buy you a Big Mac meal on the way home instead.”
Stella looked at him, considering his offer before she grinned “You do know that’s gonna cost you more than five bucks, right?”
Jake shrugged “You’re worth it.”
“Gee, thanks” she snorted.
“What can I say, I’m a romantic…and speaking of which…” he moved closer to her, dropping his head down so his lips were by her ears. “Wanna get out of here? Mom and Dad are out tonight so we can have the place to ourselves for a few hours before they get home.”
Stella turned her head to look at him, and he noticed that her cheeks had flushed a little and she bit her lip shyly before she nodded.
“Yeah, ok.”
Jake smiled, taking a deep breath before he pressed his lips to hers. They made their excuses to their friends, promising to catch up with them all soon and then the two of them made their way hand in hand off the floor, weaving in between people as they headed for the exit.
**** “I think my personal favourite bit was when you called the captain of the football team an asshole.” Jake said as he grabbed Stella’s bag from the trunk of his dad’s car “Good times.” “He deserved it.” She narrowed her eyes.
“And I supposed I deserved the punch he was going to give me for you being a mouthy brat.” Jensen looked at her as she shrugged, grinning.
“Yeah, how did you talk you way out of it anyway?” she asked, taking his hand as they walked down the drive towards the front door.
“Told him it was shark week.” Jake shrugged and Stella stopped dead.
“You did what?”
“You heard me, I blamed your little meltdown on hormones.”
“You are such an asshole!” Stella grit out through her teeth and Jake laughed, turning to face her.
"It was that or he punched me in the mouth, and let’s face it gorgeous, this-."  he waved his hand in a circle round his face, finger pointing towards it"-is too good to ruin"
She looked at him, shaking her head and snorting as he dropped a kiss to her cheek and opened the door. The house was dark and empty as he let Stella in first, where she dropped her shoes which she was carrying in her hand to the floor as Jake followed her into the hall, dumping her bag.
“You want a drink?” Jake asked and Stella turned to him, nodding.
“Yeah”
“A proper one?”
“Dur.”
Jake grinned and he led her down the hall and into the little den where his dad kept the good stuff.  He tossed his jacket over the back of the arm chair, shrugging off his waistcoat and depositing that in the same place. Rolling his shirt sleeves up to get more comfortable, he yanked open the liquor cabinet and blinked when he saw the post it stuck on the front of the bottle of vodka. It was his dad’s handwriting and with a snort he pulled it off and handed it to Stella.
“Don’t even think about it…” she read with a laugh “Fuck he knows us so well.”
“Like he never did it.” Jake grumbled, shoving the bottle back. He stood up and made his way through to the kitchen, yanking open the fridge “Oh come on dad!” he groaned as he saw another note stuck to the beer. He read it and gave a shrug “ok, so apparently this is fine…”
He pulled two out, popped the lids and handed one to Stella. She took a huge pull and let out a groan.
“Not being able to legally drink until 21 sucks “she grumbled, “I mean how can we be old enough to join the army but not consume alcohol?”
“Maybe we should move to Europe babe.” He said as they both dropped onto the sofa. Stella snorted and then sighed.
“We may end up doing.” She tapped her finger nails against the bottle “I mean, who knows where we’re gonna end up.” “Yeah, well we got years to think about that.” Jensen shrugged as he reached for the remote to turn the TV on but stopped abruptly as Stella grabbed his wrist.
“Seriously, the house is ours…and you brought me home early to watch TV?”
“No, I was…just…” he trailed off as she took the bottle off him, placed it on the table and then hitched her dress up slightly so she could straddle him. Jensen swallowed a little as her hands gently copped his face and she kissed him. For reasons which he couldn’t even place himself, because damned they’d done a lot more than simply make out, he was nervous and it showed clearly as Stella pulled back, frowning a little.
“What’s wrong?”
Jake looked at her, blinking in the dim light of the room and shook his head, jerking himself to his senses “Nothing, nothing at all.”
In a flash his lips were back on hers, his arms round her back as he held her close, his tongue snaking into her mouth, tanging with hers. As the kissing grew in intensity, he could feel himself growing aroused and clearly Stel could do as she rotated her hips slightly, grinding down against him and he gave a hiss. His hands moved to the side of her thighs, pushing up her skirt even further, fingers trailing against her skin and she moaned as he gripped her ass, giving a little squeeze. With an easy movement, Jake stood and turned them so she was under him on the couch. His lips moved to her jaw and he trailed hot kisses down her neck to the top of her dress, focussing on that spot on her neck he’d found the first time they’d made out, enjoying the little whimpers she made right by his ear. His hands crept back up her skirt, settling on her hips as her arms wrapped around him, dancing over the top of his shirt. His lips moved back to her mouth and he kissed her again, pushing down against her and Stella gave a soft keen of delight at the contact.
“Fuck, I love you Stel.” He muttered against her mouth.
“Love you too Jakey.” Her voice was punctuated by a gasp and he pulled back to look at her, her eyes shining.
“Stel, I know…I haven’t asked you if you wanna…you know…” he stumbled over his words and she smiled softly, and cut him off.
“I do.”  She assured him before she pushed her head upwards, lips crashing onto his and her hands grabbed the hem of his shirt, pulling it free of his pants. His back muscles twitched as her hands danced over his skin, the sensation of her gently dragging her nails across the base of his spine sent a spike of desire, like a red hot poker through his entire body and he let out a groan.
“Can we go upstairs?” he asked softly.
“Yeah…” she nodded.
Wordlessly he stood up, shifting his pants slightly which were fucking uncomfortable thanks to his now painful erection and grabbing their beers in one hand, he held his other out and pulled her to her feet. He led her out into the hall, up the stairs and across the landing into his room, kicking the door shut with his foot.
He flicked on the lamp on his nightstand, his eyes glancing at the photo of the two of them taken after one of his soccer matches where his cheeks were red and his face was sweaty from the exertion of the game. He loved that snap, it was the final match of the season where they had won the league and the day he’d first told her he’d loved her. Her face had lit up as she’d whispered it back to him, before he’d made it past second base that evening on the chair in a dark corner of the garden, their families milling around elsewhere, completely oblivious.
He set the bottles of beer down and turned to look back at her. She was stood, watching him, biting her lip out of nervous anticipation and suddenly a wave apprehension crashed over him as he started to realise that this was going to happen. The thought of losing his virginity to Stel had never worried him before, hell, they’d done pretty much everything else bar hit the home run to so speak, but for some reason now it seemed like a big deal. He swallowed a little, his mind flicking back to the conversation he’d had with his sister a few days ago. Whilst he and his dad were close- condom conversation proving that- there were something he just didn’t want to ask his old man about, and how to make Stel feel good when he popped her cherry so to speak was one of them. So he’d approached Jane, who for once hadn’t ripped him to shit. She’d told him the first time was gonna be awkward as hell, so he needed to be gentle, get her off in some way before he poked her (Jane’s words, not his) and most importantly he had to make sure she was ready to do it.
Licking his lips he walked back towards her and she stepped closer to him, her eyes locking onto his as his hands fell to her hips and he kissed her again, before his fingers skated up the back of her dress and he found the zipper. With a deep breath, Jensen slid the zipper down her dress causing it to fall forward slightly and he got a glimpse of her breasts, which he had yet to actually see come to think of it, and here they were, clad in a lacy, strapless black bra. He held onto his shoulders and he glanced down, watching her as she stepped out of it, kicking it to the side.
“God you’re beautiful.” He stuttered out and Stella giggled nervously before he kissed her again and pivoted them so he could lay her out on her back on his bed. He crawled up next to her, laying on his side as she tipped her head and he kissed her again, his right hand sliding up and cupping her breast over her bra. Stella arched her back a little and Jensen’s groan caught in his throat as he slid his hand down her bare stomach and gently slipped it into her panties, over her soft curls and felt her slick against his fingers. He started to play with her, the way he’d found out she’d liked and his face watched hers intently as she bit her lip, her eyes falling shut in pleasure. Before long her hips started to move against his hand and he gently moved his wrist, inserting 2 fingers inside her. Her body reacted the way he’d seen before and encouraged he continued his movements. Her hand moved up to grab at his hair, pulling him down to kiss him and before long she was crying out, her hand wrapping around his wrist as her walls fluttered around his fingers as she came.
Jensen was actively now trying not to blow his load in his pants as he watched his girl ride out her orgasm. His eyes squinted slightly as he pressed his forehead to hers, the sticky fingers from her core resting on her hip. After a moment or two that same hand moved up her side and under her back, his eyes closed as he reached her bra.
His fingers paused on the clasp and he looked at her, remembering his sisters words and he kissed her again, his head pressing against hers.
“Please tell me you want this” he said, his voice a nervous plea.
“Yeah, yeah I do…” she nodded.
“Good, me too…ok...that’s good” he smiled against her lips as his fingers moved to her clasp. He’d read there was a technique to flicking it open with a snap of your thumb and finger, but right now that really wasn’t’ happening. Shifting slightly he slid his other arm underneath her as she moved her shoulders slightly to allow him to get both hands on it, but he was still struggling, his fingers slipping against the clasp.
“Stell.” He whispered and she looked at him.
“What?”
“I'm nervous” he lightly chuckled. She smiled, and bit her lip.
“Me too.” She sat up, “Here…” her arms moved behind her and she undid her bra, tossing it to the side as it fell forward. Jake watched, his throat bobbing as he swallowed, giving an involuntary gasp almost as he saw her bare breasts for the first time.
Her fingers gently undid the buttons on his shirt, pushing it over his shoulders and Jensen gently slid down, taking her lace panties with him before he stood up, dispensing of the rest of his clothes, his eyes roving over her bare form as she lay on the bed, watching him. Fuck, the sight of her laying there completely naked was sending him into overdrive so as quickly as he could he moved and reached into the drawer on his night stand for the box of condoms he’d bought especially. His fingers slipped a little as he tore the foil packet open, his hand shaking as he knelt on the bed between her legs, rolling it down over his shaft. It was awkward, and he was starting to get a little bit het up when Stella put a hand over his and he glanced up at her knowing full well she could read him, she always could. She guided his hand down and once he was sheathed he moved, his hands either side of her shoulders as he positioned himself.
With as gently a movement as he could, he worked his way gently into her letting out a loud groan, and her breath hitched a little. The sensation of being buried in her for the first time washed over him, her tight warmth hugging his cock and his arms gave way causing him to drop to his elbows. Luckily he caught himself in time, and he shifted a little to support his weight on his forearms so he didn’t crush her.
“You ok?” she asked softly. Every muscle in his body was tense and she could clearly feel it as he lay over her.
“Yeah.” He panted. “You?” “I’m good…” there was a little pause and she placed her hand on the bottom of his back, applying a little pressure with her palm, almost as if she was trying to pull him towards her "Jakey, you gotta move, please baby..."
So he did. He started thrusting. Slowly at first, picking up the pace a little as he gained confidence. Her hands slipped up his back and came to rest as her arms hooked under his, palms flat on the back of his shoulders.
Jensen watched her carefully as he continued his movements, his eyes locked onto hers. She looked straight back at him as her body gently moved with each thrust he made. He leaned down to kiss her, and it's was a little sloppy because his brain and body were that awash with this absolute new sensation of pleasure that he was struggling to function or focus on much at the moment. He broke the kiss, dropping his forehead to hers, his mouth slack as the heat tightened in his belly and he knew it wasn’t going to be long before he came.
"Stel, I'm not...I'm not gonna..." he started to explain, almost apologies even but she cut him off.
"It's ok,..." she nudged his nose with hers "Let me see you..."
He raised his head and she looked straight at him, and with a few more little thrusts he was gone, tipping over the edge with a little grunt and a cry of her name. As the surge of pleasure washed over him he pitched forward, burying his face into her neck, breathing deeply as the world span around him, the blood pounding in his ears was almost deafening.
Stella’s hands gently slid up his back, scratching at that spot on the nape of his neck, softly tangling in his hair.
"You ok, did I hurt you?" he asked, tilting his head to look at her.
"You'd never hurt me Jake."
“You’d never hurt me Jake…”
Those words echoed round Jensen’s brain and with a groan he rolled onto his back as sleep persistently evaded him. That was one trip down memory lane he hadn’t needed, more so because the words were fucking bullshit. He had hurt her, the one thing he'd always sworn never to do. That night, their first time had been perfect, and whilst it had been awkward as hell and he’d lasted all of 5 minutes, it had been special because they’d loved one another.
Jensen turned his head to see Britney, the dark haired friend of the nurse he’d met in the bar the other night sleeping, next to him and he lay back with his eyes fixed on a spot on the ceiling. Seeing Stella before had riled him enough to call the woman and pick her up from work after her shift ended at midnight. A bottle of wine and few shots of tequila later their clothes had ended up strewn all over his apartment and, well, here she was, fast asleep next to him.
It hadn’t been a bad fuck. Jensen had the impression Britney was after a release as much as he had been and it had shown, neither of them wasting any time on foreplay. But as he lay there he was kind of ashamed to admit he missed the cuddling that Stella would always seek out after.
With another sigh he hauled himself out of bed, located his boxers and headed to his kitchen for some water. He drained a glass before grabbing a packet of advil, tossing 2 down and then draining another glass before he wandered back into the bedroom, dropping back down next to his sleeping guest. He turned himself onto his side, his back facing her and closed his eyes willing sleep to come for him.
****
Not wanting to be a total Douchebag, Jake at least made Britney some breakfast the next morning before he told her he really needed to get ready to work. She smiled at him, understanding totally she was being dismissed and hopped off the stool by the breakfast bar, locating her clothing. He watched her go, noticing the way her hips swayed underneath his t-shirt was nothing like as arousing as how Stella’s did, before he dropped the dishes into the sink shaking his head.
Once she was ready, Jake opened the door to the landing and she turned to face him. “Look, I know this was probably a one- time thing but…”
At that point Stella’s door opened and Jake’s eyes flicked to her over Britney’s shoulder as she stopped dead and looked at him, then the woman in front of him, before she gave a snort and a shake of her head, turning to lock her door. Jensen felt that stupid, child inside him stir and he turned to Britney shaking his head.
“No, that’s…” he said, stopping her, his voice loud enough to carry across the landing “I’d like to take you out. Do it properly next time?”
“Really?” Britney almost squealed and threw her arms round him. “That’s…yeah, I’d love that Jensen.”
“Great, I’ll call.” He smiled, leaning down to give her a peck on the lips. She pulled back, pinched his cheek and then headed for the elevator
“Didn’t know Mc Donald’s dealt in brunettes.” Stella said dryly, arching an eyebrow.
Jensen shrugged and grinned “Let’s just say it was a different kinda drive through…”
Stella wrinkled her nose “That’s gross.”
Jensen snorted, and watched as she moved towards the elevator before she stopped and instead turned towards the stairs. He watched her go, and no sooner had the stairway door shut the elevator arrived.
“Bye!” Britney called, blowing him a kiss. Jensen smiled and then turned back into his apartment, shutting the door behind him, banging his head back against the wood. What the fuck had he just done? Something that was meant as a quick bang one night had suddenly morphed into him taking the girl on a date?
Could always just change your number?
No point…she knows where you live.
Move apartments?
Little dramatic, all things considered don’t you think?
Maybe you should give the girl a chance? I mean, after all, Stella’s taken one on Agent Dick Name…
Yeah. That was sensible, and she hadn’t been a bad lay after all.
With a decisive nod he pushed himself off the door and headed for the shower.

You wouldn’t really wanna hold that against me would you bro?”
“Suppose not.” Brad mumbled.

MASTERLIST
"Ambulance 61, truck 81, squad 3. House fire West Street Lane 54 45."
Upon hearing the announcement boom through the fire house, Gabriela Dawson found herself standing frozen. The sudden loudness made it clear of what awaited beyond those doors, getting the members of 51 on they feet.
Hopping to your feet, you made your way outside, though stopping in your steps upon noticing Gabby's posture. Tapping her shoulder, you gathered her attention. "Don't worry Dawson," You smiled reassuringly. "Casey and I will be right behind you."
Gabby was nervous, that much was obvious. Making it to truck took a lot of effort and strain on her part. She didn't want to feel so frightened, but she couldn't help the fact that every call gave her big nerves.
"Your boyfriend is the lieutenant," You joked casually. "You'll be fine."
You start changing into your gear, glancing up at Gabby as you do so. Clicking your tongue, you say, "Look, after shift. Tonight; you, me, Casey and Jay. A double date at Molly's."
She smiles and follows you into the truck, "Yeah, I'd like that."
Your friends settled inside, scooting over upon seeing you climb into the vehicle. Sitting next to Mouch, you leaned your head against his shoulder, listening closely to what was being said around you.
"What do you think?" Asks Herrmann, shifting his weight until he got comfortable in his spot. "Is this some kind of a oh-I-forgot-to-turn-off-the-stove call or is it something serious?"
You've been in stronger fires, burning 20 or more story building that sorta thing, making this something that was supposed to be easy peasy. It's a house fire. They happen every day unfortunately.
"I hope it's nothing serious. I barely slept last night," You tell him truthfully, remembering the toss and turning you had to go through.
Gabby nodded in understanding, "You feeling okay now?"
You nodded with a grimace, "Must be the Thai Jay and I had."
"Anyway," you began. "Isn't Street Lane like the fanciest part of Chicago or something?"
"Yeah that's where all the millionaires live," Otis replied, glancing behind the steering wheel ever so slightly in your direction.
You felt Mouch shrug, the sudden movement had your head rolling off his shoulder, though you were quick to place it back, Mouch tapping his palm against your head.
After 10 minutes or so, that ended up feeling like hours due to Gabby's constant taps against the floor of the vehicle, everyone jumped out of the truck, giving you the impression that the truck itself is on fire.
Outside, neighbors buzzed with anticipation, stepping out of the way when told to. "Everyone let's open up the roof! Y/LN you're with Severide on this one."
You gave Matt a nod of determination before running over to where squad is prepped to enter the burning house. The modern 3 story home on normal occasions looked mind blowing, giving everyone in passing envy to feel.
But at the moment each story was decorated with blazing fire, sucking out the luxury. "Y/LN there's a scared kid upstairs, her mom says she won't talk to us. We need you to try for us. "
You nod, "Yes Lieutenant."
Kelly gives you a rougish smile, one that used to make you week in the knees, "Good. Now go. Top floor."
With Mouch aiming the long ladders to the top window, you start climbing them. After climbing them up and down numerous amounts of times, the thought of doing so felt like a second nature now.
For a brief moment, you remembered how scared you were in the academy. You shook your head immediately, not quite understanding where the sentiment was coming from.
Was it just you or were you drifting off to memory land more often lately?
You grab the window by its sill, ignoring the flashing memories and throw yourself inside.
Your hands grasped your radio immediately, "I'm in chief. Fire department call out!"
There's no response so you put on your mask and make your way deeper inside the room. Glancing around, you assess the room for possible hiding spots.
Only to find none.
The king sized bed, similar to the one at your own home, is on fire and so is most of the furniture surrounding it. You kick the door of the wardrobe with your leg only to find no one inside.
You walk outside and into the wide hallway, barely being able to see from the smoke and blazing orange flames. You call out again, though louder this time before kicking open the first door to your left. "Fire department call out!"
The voice that answers is so faint that if Gabby were inside, she would've surely missed it. But as someone with experience, the voice was recognizable and you knew that there was someone inside. "Call out!"
Somehow, while the furniture around the window, including the window itself, was being eaten away by fire, the furniture by the door being safe from the fire.
Not for long.
You spot a toy box in the only avaliable corner in the room, moving ever so slightly. Almost as if someone was trying to get out.
Toys of all shapes and sizes are scattered all around the box, urging you to slowly make your way to it before pushing it over the proper way.
A gasp leaves your mouth involuntarily.
The little girl looked around 5, her body too small and fragile to belong to a girl older than that.
She looked at you with bright blue eyes, catching you off guard with the electrical glow they had. A story of fear pushed through her irises, letting you know of the trust issues that colored her.
The girl shakes her head violently and coughs out whatever she can, breaking your heart with the actions. Without a second thought, you pulled your mask over your head, taking it off even when it tangled itself with your hair. "I need you to come with me, sweetheart. The fire is growing and it's not safe here anymore. Your mommy is waiting for you outside, come sweetie let me help you."
If you could describe her anxiety with words, you'd compare it with the fire. Overwhelming and strong. "Hey, hey sweetie it's okay...I'm going to help you, my name's Y/N."
She looked at you, giving you the impression that she was analyzing you. Eventually she did seem to come to a conclusion that she indeed was not safe inside.
After her nod, you didn't waste time by placing your mask over her head, pressing the button to release oxygen. After scooping her into your arms, the little girl wrapped both her arms and legs around you. Grateful that she trusts you, you ran into the hallway and toward the very window you came through.
But Wallace Boden stopped you before you could do so much as take a step toward the door. "Y/LN go down immediately! The house is going to blow!!"
You heart races for a tiny bit and you sprint to the staircase. You feel the girl shaking in your arms but you don't let that stop you for a second, the need to get out taking over. Brushing your hand over her dirty, smoke colored hair you whispered into her ear. "You're gonna be okay..."
The pressure the fire had on the upstairs floor finally gathers into an explosion. The force of the blow sends you flying down the stairs, urging you to wrap yourself tighter against the child, protecting her with every fiber in your body. You back hurts immensely but you manage to stand up, "Chief!"
Fire continues to grow, ignoring your whimpers and coughs. Your ankle seemed to twist in the process of falling but you bite down your bottom lip, chewing down on it until you drew blood and walk no matter the pain.
You spot the open window, and don't think twice before sprinting toward it even with an ankle being the way it was. The ladders are placed securely placed against window stills, allowing you put the little girl on them and let Hermann take her despite her whails of protests.
While waiting for her to be helped down the ladders, you turned around and slammed the door shut behind you. The pain in your back intensifies and you feel you lip bleed from both the inside and outside.
And then you see it.
The fire just under the door, you feel the pressure it has on the door. It's going to burst.
Without thinking, and in just the right time - you jump out of the window.
The moment you're out and flying in the air the explosion that was building up finally breaks, sending everything to chaos.
You catch the ladders by the cold metallic railing just in time, though it doesn't take a second before your fingers start to loosen their hold.
Knowing that the ladder will slip right through your fingers, you urged your arms to push you upwards but with no avail. The pain you sustained was intense.
"Y/LN HANG ON. WE'RE GETTING YOU DOWN!" You hear your Chief yell and true to his words, you were lowered down.
It was sudden, the feeling of losing consciousness. Everything that had happened while you were inside seemed to catch up to you with great speed. The pain in your back and ankle, your rigid breathing and tight lungs, busted lip and bruised face. 5 feet in the air and you finally lose the hold you had on the ladder.
You fall to the ground and before you could even reach it - you were out cold.
***
You wake up in the hospital, April hovering over you with a warm smile. You try to move but you feel sore all over, your attempts at moving being a twitch of your fingers. "Take it easy Y/N. I'll go tell them they can come see you now."
Your mind starts replaying images of what happened. You smile lightly. I jumped out of a freaking window.
"April, is Jay-"
Your eyes widen when you see Jay rushing in, before you could even finish your question. April points to him with a smirk, leaving you two be and giving you privacy by pulling the curtain closed.
"Jesus Y/N you freaked me out." Jay sighed, immediately leaning in to kiss you forehead. Your eyes immediately spot the badge around his waist, it glimmers under the light above you. "Did you ditch work for me, babe?"
"Damn right I did," Your boyfriend replied, quite proudly you noted, leaning toward your parted lips with his own. The kiss was sweet, filled with unshed worry that turned to relief after a moment. It felt as though Jay was reassuring both you and himself that you were okay. "I came here as soon as I heard what happened."
You squeeze his hand in gratitude, watching with teary eyes as he brushes a few misplaced strands of hair out of your face, tucking them softly behind your ears. Jay's brother Will, come in the room soon after. Behind him stood Jeff, a very close friend of yours.
"Hey guys." You greet them, rather brightly after Jay wiped a fallen tear off your face. "Jeff how's the med life been treating you?"
You missed seeing Jeff at work, daring to admit it felt lonely without him to a degree. "Eh, good enough. I miss the fire."
Will slapped his shoulder lightly.
"Yeah, I bet you do," You said with a chuckle, before gesturing to yourself and your body with a hand that wasn't held tightly in Jay's. "I mean, how could someone not miss this."
Everyone laughed at your words until Will deemed appropriate to speak up in regards to your medical condition, "Well, Y/N... You and your baby are going to be just fine. I'll get started on the discharge-"
Baby? "Baby? Will what did you say?" Jay asled, his face looking the same level of confused as yours.
"I said that Y/N and her baby are-"
"I'm pregnant?" You asked in disbelief. How?
"Yes Y/N you're 9 weeks along." said Will with a smile, "Congratulations you two."
We were careful, was your only thought. Not that the news were bad.
Just surprising.
"But I'm on the pill-" You started, only to remember the medication you took a few months ago as a way to fight away the sickness you were feeling.
You weren't a paramedic, nor an doctor in any sense. But it wasn't hard to put two and two together.
"Will...Can certain antibiotics dilute my birth control and stop it from working?"
Will creased his eyebrows, but deciding to answer nevertheless. "Yes. It depends on which ones you use but most of the time that's the case," Will confirms your suspicion. "I'm guessing you didn't know."
"We didn't," answered Jay for the both of you.
You didn't even feel the onset of tears that rushed down your cheeks, "I'm going to be a mom."
Happiness surged through your body, making it the moment you knew that you wanted this. Your pregnancy might have been unexpected but you wouldn't change it for the world. One look at Jay, who had his face nested against your twined hands and all was confirmed.
You pull yourself up into a sitting position, kissing his head until he rose his head to meet your eyes with the same amount, if not more tears in his blue eyes. Jay pulled you in for a passionate kiss, not caring about the company. "A mini us."
Your smile reached the sky and you put a hand to your belly as a result. Something so beautifully pure and innocent grew inside of you, being the gift of love.
You're having a child with the man who loves you like the night sky loves it's stars.
But then, so suddenly guilt washes over you. The air around you changed, making Jay furrow his brows. You could've lost the baby today. A baby you didn't even know you were carrying. If you knew, there was no way in hell you would've walked into that house and continued working no matter how much you loved your job.
"Your mommy and daddy love you." You whispered, running your free hand over your slightly swollen stomach, "Your mom is so sorry for what happened today."
Jay kissed your temple, reassuring you that none of what had happened was your fault. A moment later, you found yourself smiling. You met Will's eyes. "Will you're gonna be an uncle."
The older Halstead shrugged, but the pride and joy was flickering in his eyes as he scanned the monitor. "You bet. I'm happy for you two, man really I am."
"Don't worry bro. Your time will come too," Jay told him before he stood up and hugged his brother. You wouldn't be surprised, him and Natalie are an adorable couple.
"I'm happy for you Y/N. Congratulations." Jeff rubbed your shoulder. You beamee at him. "I'll go and get them."
By them he meant your colleagues; family.
Silvie and Gabby were the first ones to be rushed in, followed by the rest of the fire house until the trauma room was crammed with pure muscle. "Y/N are you okay??"
Jay, who had left the room with Will to sign some papers pushed through to stand by your side once again, "They're okay."
You tried your best to not laugh at their confused expressions, barely even holding it in when Kelly muttered something about how Jay wasn't even injured.
On que Will turns on the ultrasound (perhaps because the brothers talked it through in the hallway) and gasps are heard all around, filling the small room with emotions that ranged from surprise and disbelief to pure joy for you and Jay.
With gel on your belly, Will starts moving the transducer and soon a small baby can be seen on the screen, a really small baby, but a baby nevertheless. Tears in your eyes piled up once again and you squeeze Jay's hand joyfully. You could hear Silvie say, "I think I'm going to faint."
Life just became a hell of a lot more exciting and you couldn't wait to experience every part of it with the man you love most on this world.
Rounds of congratulations happen after that, each and every one of them saying different things once they're left alone with you.
Mouch asked Jay to send a kiss to Sargeant Platt; Hermann got Cindy and his kids on video chat, continously welcoming you to the family life; Severide actually had gloss in his eyes because he was so happy, though he did everything in his power to not admit to it.
Gabby and Casey canceled your double date at Molly's because they want you on bed rest. They said they'll bring takeout to your shared place instead.
"Just no Thai, please."

Daria’s Crew prompt
A Daria reboot prompt
Do not own Daria
Just an idea for a Daria remake
Take place in current times
Daria is part of a group called the Outsiders, sworn enemies to the Fashion Group and is one of three of the Head Committee Chairmen
The others are Jane Lane and Beatrice “Blight” Thrive
The Outsiders are considered a Hipster Group, though unpopular, they were a charity group
The Members of the Outsiders are Beatrice “Blight” Thrive, Jane Lane, Daria Morgendorffer, Ted DeWitt-Clinton, Andrea, Bobby “Dante” Lockjaw, Roger Pip, and Xavier Maxwell
The Outsiders always outsmart the Fashion Club as they tried to get to them
Because the group is the smartest in the school, people often come to them for advice or to bribe them
They are known for having a surly attitude and a sarcastic tone, except for Ted
Blight’s Mother (Pandora Thrive) is the Superintendent of the School District while her Mom (Maricela Thrive) is the Director General Of Police and Angela Li is often under supervision as they had been rumors about the shady dealings she does with the school
Daria and the gang often hang out either at Jane’s, Daria’s or Blight’s house
Daria is in charge of order of businesses and the idea girl
Jana in charge of design
Blight is in charge of charities as she crafts knitting, sewing, crafts and other things for the poor
Ted provides equipment and research
Andrea is in charge of Budgets
Dante is the Muscle but refused to be on the football team, believing he’ll become dumber
Roger is a medical team and supplies resources
Xavier is a spy and military planner
The school was soon under investigation as the principal was arrested for illegal gambling with students and Blight watched with a smug look while her parents dragged Li away
Li was placed on temporary leave without pay then was monitored for life
Val Magazine soon take notice of Hipsters as they needed to find something different
Val was interested in the Outsiders as she wanted to do an article on the idea of doing and dressing without caring what others think, but because they like it
That type of attitude drew her as their skills and ideas were interesting, liking to be themselves and not to conform that Val decided to bring a new type of Teen Culture
The article was titled ‘To Be the Same is Lame, the New is to Be You’, an article about the Hipster Culture and how being yourself is the greatest sense of fashion of all
Val even wanted the Outsiders to be models but was turned down at first until they were all bribed
This was also followed by a seminar on how parents need to focus on individuality and how bullying over pressure can create disastrous future
Soon stores were filled with Hipster Clothing as they were being sold out
The Fashion Club soon needed to figure out how to be Hipsters as Football Players, Cheerleaders, and everyone else was trying to have the Outsiders teach how to be Hipsters
The school feared losing the Football team as Li saw an opportunity to change the schools images and has everyone do a report on charity organizations except for the Outsiders since they are already a charity group
Daria and the Gang hated that they wanted to be just like them as it creeped them out
Some kids even resorted to spying on them
Blight managed to shake them off in saying a Hipster is being you and doing what you like, giving enough time for the Outsiders to escape
Kevin and Brittany are more interested as they liked being themselves as Brittany becomes popular with clothing and belongings she made herself and Kevin's organic cooking and Gardening giving him extra strength despite not knowing what Organic means
Daria was shock that Kevin had the skill to even grow plants, let alone keep them alive
Through debate, the Outsiders make them honorary Outsiders despite them being popular
Dante is an animator with a favorite for Asian Pop Culture
The Outsiders soon host the test of courage as the students must write their names of seven chalkboards where the Fears are and come back at the entrance until the sun came up, but to beware of the Seven Fears
Legend says anyone who faces all Seven Fears Disappears forever
Fear One: Metal Mouth, the student eater
Fear Two: Miss. Failure, the trapped student who died trapped in the closet makes students fail in the abandoned classroom
Fear Three: Rattling Girl the girl who attacks popular girls and steals their eyelids
Fear Four: Model in the Mirror, A girl who modeled for artists until a mirror collapsed on her, the mirror was fine but the girl disappeared as the ghost of the girl makes people paint her or she would force them to strangle themselves
Fear Five: Principal Walter, a Mad headmaster accused of manslaughter of a student when it was a boarding school and hang himself when the students teased him, hangs any kid who enters the office
Fear Six: Killer Kent and Kelly. the Prom King whose Prom Queen was humiliates by her friends and he took revenge by stabbing them and used their organs to decorate prom and committed suicide together, would gut any student into the gym
Fear Seven Living Meat: The Cafeteria Food was once made of the meat of the fat teachers and the chef was found out and throws himself into the giant grinder, becomes living mush of meat to drag anyone into the grinder at night
The Outsiders have fun scaring them but were surprised to hear that a friendly boy who helped them find their way, but no one played the boy
That was when the janitor revealed Fear Eight, Lost Football Player, a former student who took the test and was never seen again
Daria's Aunt Amy marries a successful Modern Artist who never smiles, Sanheim Finch
Sans likes Daria but sneers at the rest of the family as the family feel like outsiders with gothic people and hipsters

Title: This Wheel's on Fire
Word Count: 3,419
Fluff, Rated Gen
An old Lincoln Continental with faded paint nearly hits Baby in the supermarket parking lot. Dean slams the brakes. His untasted coffee takes a dive, and Dean is quickly slapping take-out napkins from the glove box stash even as he slides into an open parking spot. He takes a minute of the limited time he has for this errand to get himself calmed down.
His temper flares up again when he sees that he’s parked next to the gold Continental. He doesn’t have time to move the Impala to another spot, so he slides over the bench seat. The Fiat on that side is crookedly parked but still leaves enough space for Dean to open the door more than four inches.
Phone in hand,  he scrolls through Jody’s text messages for the list. While he was driving to the store, she’s added more. He grabs a shopping cart on the way in, notes where the freezer with the ice is, and speeds up an aisle toward the bakery section, where he almost collides with a guy striding through the T-intersection.
“Shit! By bad,” Dean says, stopping short of running the startled man down.
The man squints. His blue eyes burn brighter. “That would be the second time today,” he accuses.
“What?” Dean asks.
The man rolls his eyes. “I don’t have time for this,” he gripes as he beelines for another section of the store.
Dean doesn’t have time either. The cake is ready when he gets to the bakery counter, but they’ve written “Congratulations Kelsy” instead of “Kelly.” To fix it, Dean would have to wait for the only person on staff with the rare skill of being able to write with decorator gel to get back from a break of unknown duration. He takes the cake as-is and a tube of Cake Mate. He rattles through the aisles for the rest of the supplies, eyes the coffee cart, but opts to get in the shortest of the long checkout lines instead.
The cranky guy gets in line behind him.
Their eyes meet and lock. For a second it looks like the guy might yield and move to another line, but as Dean is starting to unload his items onto the belt, the guys interrupts.
“Can I go ahead of you? I only have three things.”
“Sorry, buddy,” Dean says. “I’m on a clock.”
“I’m not your buddy,” Blue Eyes snipes. He eyes Dean’s purchases, expression a mix of irritation and confusion.
“Man, what is your issue with me?” Dean protests. “Look, I haven’t had my coffee yet, so maybe I’m missing something. But I’ve gotta finish shopping and be gone in sixty seconds, OK? There’s a pregnant lady waiting for her cake and baby shower games. I’ll be out of your life in five minutes.”
The man’s face suddenly brightens. “You’re going to a baby shower.” The brilliance of his smile is like white sparks. Dean feels his body respond to the warmth of that smile even though the sudden transformation from pissy to friendly throws him.
The checker has started scanning Dean’s purchases. He gives her the sticker with the barcode for the cake. “And six bags of ice,” he tells her.
Blue Eyes asks, “Is the party for your partner?”
That startles a laugh out of Dean. “No,” he answers, a drawn out negation. “My friend is hosting. The mom-to-be is from her church.” He adds, “I’m not seeing anyone currently.” He gives the guys his own friendly smile.
Dean’s lure lands, because the man extends a hand. “I’m Cas. By the way.”
“Dean.” They shake hands. Cas has a strong grip. In the fleeting skin to skin contact notes the slight callous and Cas’s long fingers. He has good hands.
“It's a happy occasion.” Cas sets down his purchases: a guinea pig plushie, pack of gold gift wrapping tissue, and a glossy white bag decorated with rainbows and unicorns. A tween must be having a birthday.
Dean reaches for his wallet to pay. It’s not in his pocket. “Crap.” This grocery store isn’t set up to take pay apps.
Cas catches on. “Dean, I’ve got this,” he says. “It’s just,” he gestures at the bags, “diapers and candy bars.”
“It’s a lot,” Dean objects. “I’ll Venmo you the money right now.”
“I don’t know Venmo,” Cas says. He tells the cashier, “I’ll pay for mine with his.” To Dean he says, “Let’s exchange phone numbers and we can settle up later when we’re not holding up a checkout line.”
“Are you sure?” Dean asks.
“I believe in trusting people.” Cas nearly bumps Dean’s hip putting his card into the payment terminal. When the path is clear, Dean pushes the shopping cart past the checkstand, but for a long moment Cas and Dean are crowded into each other’s personal space.
“You said you haven’t had coffee yet. Can I buy you a cup?” Cas points to the coffee cart. “I know you’re short on time, but we can get each other’s contact info while they make our drinks.”
They both order drip coffee, black. The barista doesn’t have any brewed, and offers a choice between Americanos or a five minute wait.
“We can blame our delay on traffic,” Cas suggests.
They opt for the wait.
“OK, give me your number,” Dean says after they take a table in the tiny dining area. “If you want I can bring you cash after I drop off the party stuff.”
The cart is too big, so Dean takes out the bags and sets them on the table, leaving the cart parked out of the way. He’ll need it when he gets the ice on the way out. They start out chatting about movies and end up in an oddly intense discussion about social justice and the existence of a benevolent God in the minutes until the barista calls out that their coffees are ready.
Dean takes the lid off and slugs the coffee. He can’t help the sound that comes out of him, even though it is borderline inappropriate for a grocery store. “That’s scalding,” he says, eyes watering, “but so good.” Cas is smiling at him. “My friend woke me up with the shopping emergency,” Dean explains. He gestures to his coffee-splattered clothes. “And then some dick in a crappy Continental makes a illegal left on the way in here — “
“Excuse me ,” Cas interrupts with flashpoint ire. “That turn was both legal and clear , and if your boat hadn’t been taking up two lanes we would not have had that near miss!”
Dean takes a long swallow of hot coffee before he gets in a fight over Baby’s honor. He takes a mental half-step back as he realizes that Cas was the driver earlier. Dean has a bad temper, he knows it, and he’s learned to be better about it than he was in his twenties. Cas had saved his bacon with the money thing, and he had done it in spite of thinking Dean was in the wrong.
“Look. Thanks for the help,” he says. He’s sincere but somehow it comes out sounding aggressive. “I mean it. Thanks.” Without saying anything more, he grabs his bags and stalks out. He makes it all the way to Baby before he realizes. He gets the shopping bags in the trunk and goes back for the forgotten ice.
Cas is walking directly toward him. For a solid three strides across the asphalt it is a game of chicken. They stare daggers at each other, oblivious to any traffic around. Nearly simultaneously, they both realize that Cas is walking to his car, which is parked right next to the Impala, and Dean is walking back into the grocery store. They pass each other; the absence of acknowledgement is an acknowledgement in itself.
Dean makes it back into the store, loads up a shopping cart with the ice Cas paid for, and pushes the rattling cart out the door and across the lot to his car. The Continental is still in its spot. Cas hasn’t left yet; he is sitting in the driver seat. Dean can’t get into his driver’s seat until Cas leaves, so he loads the ice into the trunk slowly. He finishes his coffee.
When Cas still hasn’t left, Dean walks around the Lincoln’s large ass end and raps a knuckle on the back window to get Cas’s attention. He waits for Cas to roll down the window a few inches, before pitching his voice to him. “I can’t get in my car until you pull out,” he tells him.
“Your shopping cart is in the way. I’ve been waiting until it’s safe,” Cas informs him.
Dean just shakes his head and walks away, dragging his cart to the corral at the end of the parking row. He lobs his empty paper cup into the same trash can he dropped the mess from his spilled coffee into. He watches Cas back out of the space, smooth and easy, the engine of the Continental bumbling like a contented bee as he drives away. Dean jogs back to the Impala and slides into the driver seat before a car can take the newly empty spot, not that anything would fill the space like that late ‘70s Lincoln Continental Mark V.
He gets a weird feeling looking at the empty space. It feels like a missed opportunity. He wishes he’d kept his mouth shut about the left turn. How many times had someone cut him off in traffic or made a bad lane change, and how many of those times mattered after? None. He and Cas had been having a good conversation, connecting.
Dean tunes the radio to the classic rock station, relaxes with the comfortable and familiar, and heads out. Kelly’s address is less than five minutes away, but too many of the residential streets dead end, and by the time he finds the right path through, it’s been a quarter hour. there is space for him in the driveway, though, and he pulls in so that he can unload the ice bags. He tosses one on his shoulder and knocks on the unfamiliar door.
* * *
“I should have handled that better,” Cas says to the stuffed animal, his last minute gift for Kelly’s baby-on-the-way. Her house is close by and he knows the way, so he finds himself thinking about Dean, feelings a mix of irritation and deep attraction. Dean, who he will probably never see again.
Because he knows that quite a few guests will be attending her party, he parks the Lincoln around the block to leave space along the street in front of her home. Kelly Kline-Rooney and her husband Jefferson have a newly remodeled, two-story Craftsman home with a large yard and back garden. Cas drew the plans for the remodel, and over some difficulty with the contractor, he and Kelly became friends.
He’s arrived early to help with set up, but Jody, the organizer — who he meets for the first time — shoos him out of the kitchen, so he gets to spend the time with Kelly. “How are you,” he asks her, “and how’s the baby?”
“I’m good,” she says, “we’re both good.” She heaves a little sigh and fidgets in her armchair. “Actually, I’m a little wound up. I haven’t finished painting the mural in the nursery, and all of a sudden I feel like there won’t be enough time to get anything finished before my baby gets here.” She smooths a hand over her belly. Her expression changes and she gasps, “Oh! Give me your hand.” She takes him by the wrist and pulls his hand toward her baby bump.
He feels her baby kick, all that life, gearing up to meet the world. Cas has to admit, because Kelly has enthusiastically roped him into the experience of her pregnancy, he has become more interested in the idea of having children. It has broadened his outlook.
“Kelly,” he finds himself saying, “I met someone today.”
Her eyes sparkle with interest. “It’s not even ten o’clock yet!” she laughs.
“I met him at the grocery store,” Cas says, shrugging. He smiles, thinking about Dean. His smile breaks as he recalls how it played out. “Unfortunately,” he confesses, “we didn’t part on good terms.”
“Cas,” Kelly mourns. “What happened? Tell me all about it?”
“This beautiful man,” he starts, thinking of Dean, his deep voice and the way he spoke with conviction and certainty. The way he made direct eye contact. The sexy freckles and the shape of his lips.
“Yes?” Kelly prompts when Cas gets lost in thought.
He laughs. “He is… very attractive,” Cas emphasizes. “You know I’m not overly focused on appearances, but Dean.” He shakes his head and looks heavenward. His eyes fall to his hands. He picks at his fingernails. “We almost got into a car accident, and that’s what we ended up fighting about. But before that, we got coffee together and talked, and we exchanged numbers.”
“Well that’s good!” Kelly encourages. “Something sparked between you. You can call him and smooth things out.”
“I wasn’t in the wrong,” Cas grumps.
“No, sweetie. I’m not saying you have to apologize or anything. But you can talk. You only just met. Sometimes first meetings don’t go all that well because of sparks.” She gives him a robust pat on the knee. “I’m rooting for you.” Inching forward in her chair to get up, she sighs, “I miss drinks with booze in them. How about we get some fancy lemonade and pretend it’s rosé?”
“I’ll get it,” Cas says so that Kelly doesn’t have to rise. He enters the kitchen with a hello for Jodi and gets introduced to Patience a moment before she leaves to answer the front door. Cas can hear her greeting the newcomer, and he stops mid-pour when he hears the deep timbre that answers. He finishes pouring Kelly’s sparkling pink lemonade before he musters the question for Jodi, “Is that Dean?”
“You know each other?” Jodi responds with cheerful curiosity.
Patience comes back in, holding up a grocery bag. “Dean came through. I’m going to help him bring in the bags of ice — “
“I can help with that,” Cas interrupts.
“Would you? Thanks!”
The look on Dean’s face when he sees Cas is… not what Cas expected. Dean’s eyes light up, and there is a genuine wonder in his surprise.
  * * *
Missouri’s granddaughter, Patience Turner, waves for Dean to come inside. “Hi Dean! Jody’s in the kitchen.”
“Hiya, Patience. Where can I put the ice? I’ve got five more bags like this.”
“There’s a big cooler out on the barbecue patio,” she says. “Through the living room. I’ll get you some help unloading the car.”
The living room already has a dozen people in it. Dean exchanges salutations with the people he knows and exudes charm at the rest. He shakes out the bag of ice into the cooler, which looks big enough, and scopes out the landing spot for the cake. There is a long table already stocked with plates and plastic cutlery; it has some gifts on it that will need to be moved to join the pile of gifts on the coffee table. Dean registers that one is a white gift bag with unicorns and rainbows on it, stuffed with gold tissue.
Patience is in the entry with Cas.
For a solid beat, Dean doesn’t know what to think, because something in his chest turns over like a big engine revving up. Once the wheels of his mind get going, he still continues standing there like an idiot. “Hey, Cas,” he says.
“Hello, Dean.”
Cas turns and goes out the door. When they reach the Impala, they are alone together, and it is awkward. It is definitely awkward. Cas stands by the trunk, expectantly.
“Here, let me get that,” Dean says. As he unlocks and lifts the heavy lid of the trunk, they are standing too close again. Dean should mind that Cas’s keeps getting into his personal space, but he doesn’t. He wants to get closer. This level of attraction makes him stupid, and he feels the urge to make an offhand comment to sabotage himself.
But then Cas says, “I’m sorry we parted on a bad note.”
“Yeah, um,” Dean answers, “me too.” He knows it’s not enough, not when he’s gotten a second chance. “I mean, I’m sorry, too.” It’s hard to believe it can be that simple, but Cas’s face lights up with hope, so maybe it is.
“Between the two of us, I’m sure we can get all of this in one trip,” Cas says, and now they have to get moving. Apparently, he is also a pro at self-sabotage. It’s weirdly comforting.
They don’t get much of a chance to talk alone after that. Dean fixes the writing on Kelly’s cake and catches up with Jody, while Cas makes party talk with the people he knows. They chat, but not alone, not until Dean is volunteered to fire up the barbecue and Cas escapes outside with him.
It’s a gas barbecue, and clean. There isn’t much to do while it heats up. “How do you like your burger?” Dean asks, because food is an easy topic.
Cas shrugs. “Well done?”
Dean shakes his head. “A good cut of grass-fed beef, medium rare — that’s a burger to sink your teeth into. Juicy, fresh.”
“I don’t eat much red meat anymore,” Cas says. “I sneak a trip to White Castle once in a rare while.”
“White Castle? You’ve gotta let me make you a real burger, Cas.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Trust the Meat Man,” Dean says, pointing both thumbs back at himself.
Cas squints at him. “You’re very confident in your opinions,” he says.
Dean’s not sure how to take that. “Shouldn’t I be?”
“There’s more than one side to things,” Cas answers.
“A right side and a wrong side?” Dean teases.
“Dean.” Cas gives him an eye roll and a look, a real cut the crap look that delights Dean. He knows he likes arguing with someone who can hold his ground.
“You’re easy to get riled up, y’know that?”
“Am I.” Cas’s tone is flirty.
“Or maybe it’s just easy for me to get your wheels burning,” Dean flirts back.
“How, by disparaging my car?” Cas asks.
Dean blinks. “Your car?”
“You called it ‘crappy’.” He does the air quotes. “It’s not. There’s a lot to love about an old car. As I would think you would know, since you have one yourself.”
“Did you just compare my Impala to your land yacht? How does a guy like you even have a car like that?”
“I like it,” Cas defends.
“It’s still not a Chevy,” Dean says.
“I have never understood the Ford - Chevrolet rivalry,” Cas comments. “They’re not sports teams. It’s bizarre.” He’s serious.
“OK, OK,” Dean responds. “I’m not trying to be an asshole,” he says. He adds on, “It just comes easy to me.”
“So we should just kiss and make up?” Cas asks, making eye contact.
Dean licks his lips. Damn, if that isn’t an invitation.
They both glance at the sliding glass doors and the potential audience inside. “Ah, the garden shed,” Cas starts. “There might be some needed equipment.”
“Yeah, barbecue stuff or,” Dean agrees.
As soon as they are inside the painted shed, they are in each other’s personal space again. There is nothing accidental about the kiss that follows. Cas’s hands grip Dean at the hip. Dean puts his hands on Cas’s jaw. He holds his head and kisses him deeply, eager to feel him. He gets Cas’s lower lip between his own and gently lingers as they explore each other’s mouths.
They make out for as long as they think they can get away with. But the barbecue is unattended, and they know someone will wonder where they’ve disappeared to if they are gone too long.
Dean makes the moment they have last as long as he can. “I guess we should get back,” he murmurs, nuzzling at Cas’s neck.
“Mmh,” Cas makes a noise that could be agreement.
“What are you doing after the party?” Dean asks.
“Probably helping clean up,” answers Cas.
“Funny, me too. What about tomorrow?”
“Well, tomorrow I have to run some errands after work. Grocery store shopping.” Cas’s eyes are twinkling.
“Oh. I see. How about I do the shopping, and cook you a nice dinner? My place?”
“You’re on, Meat Man,” Cas agrees.

Joe turned into Rosewood Lane late afternoon. Saturday night had been rough and he may have had a little (about an entire bottle more than he should have been) too much to drink and he had spent all Sunday sleeping it off. But, it was a new week today. He’d sobered up and he couldn’t wait to get back to work and forget all about saturday night.
He stopped before the iron gate. Two guards stood on either side, armed with guns, looking at Joe in his car.
Rosewood Lane: the suburbia away from the suburbia, a paradise for the uber rich with around the clock security and state of the art surveillance. Every resident was guaranteed their privacy and safety. Joe could barely stomach the thought of having to live here. He wasn’t even inside yet and he could already see their smug faces in front of his eyes, looking at him as the outsider, someone who didn’t deserve to be among them, someone less than. It made Joe’s blood boil just thinking about it.
He lowered his window and tapped the button labelled ‘1205: Justice, C’ on the stand next to the door.
Static returned from the speaker before a woman spoke in a cheery voice. “Who is it?”
“This is Detective Joe Vega from the Ellesburg PD and I had some questions for Mrs. Justice.”
“This is she. Questions about what, detective?” She asked.
“It’s about your husband.” Joe responded. The static cut out and the gears of the gate began to move.
Rosewood Lane stood on the opposite end of Athea, away from the river Daine, high above the rest of the city, like a literal pedestal for the uber rich, overlooking the people beneath them. Joe had never been inside before.
From the inside, the place looked even more like it was built on the backs of exploited laborers or in other words, rich. As Joe made his way to the Justice house, he couldn’t help but notice all the non-white people tending to — most likely not their own — gardens, cutting the trees, cleaning up the area. A few women sat outside, self tanning in the sun while a few children moved along the streets, playing their games, enjoying their tiny, sheltered worlds.
Joe wondered if these people knew what happened outside their little paradise up here or if they were just blissfully ignorant.
Joe found his way to the Justice house fairly easily. The big mansion stood intimidatingly, distinguishable even in the fake utopia that was Rosewood Lane. Just from the outside, Joe could see eight windows on the top floor and six long ones on the bottom, the door sandwiched between the three long windows on each side. It rose high up, higher than most other houses around it. It somewhat reminded him of the front of the white house.
Pulling into the Justice house’s driveway, the door to the house opened and a woman, presumably Mrs. Justice from the look of her clothes, stood in the doorway, as if she couldn’t wait for Joe to ring the doorbell.
He stepped out of his car and locked the car behind him as he walked up the stairs onto the front porch of the house.
“Mrs. Justice?” Joe asked.
She nodded. “Please, come inside.” She moved aside to let him in.
He walked in and she followed him, quickly closing the door behind her.
“You said you had some questions?” She asked nervously.
“Yeah.”
“Please, let’s sit in the living room.”
“Alright.” Joe said, following her deeper into what seemed like an endless stream of doors. The ivory walls of the house rose high, the large dome shaped skylight at the top blasted sunlight in, making them seem even more white. The walls were decorated with a variety of objects, most of what Joe assumed to be antiques of some sort and some family photos. Every frame was golden, perfectly machined and manufactured, just like the pictures in those frames. Flawless. A disgusting image. A facade to show the world how perfect their family was. Joe suspected that was anywhere near the case.
The whole house was smattered with objects that brought some contrast to the stark white. If he wasn’t human, some onlooker would probably say he was the most contrasting thing there.
All the white around him was almost intimidating. Unblemished, untouched, pure. But he couldn’t let himself get distracted. He had a job to do.
“Right in here.” She said, opening a set of two large doors into a large open living room that screamed minimalist. No decorations, no frills. The only furniture was the sofas and some lamps beside them on tiny coffee tables. Two extremely comfortable looking alcoves separated by the TV on the wall decorated the rest of the room aside from the table in front on the sofa. In the bottom right corner of the room stood a tiny bookcase, all on its own, almost a distraction from the rest of the room’s minimalism. Sunbeams flooded the room from the alcove windows as Joe and Mrs. Justice sat down on the sofa. It was so quiet that the rubbing of Joe’s jeans against the white leather as he adjusted in his seat was the loudest sound in the room.
“So, Mrs. Justice—” Joe began.
“Please, Jessica is fine.”
“Alright, Jessica.” Joe took out his recorder and placed it on the glass table in front of him, turning it on.
“Please state your name for the record.” Joe said.
“Uh, this is Jessica Justice.” She said hesitantly. “What is this about, Detective?”
“Ma’am, I’m sorry but I’m afraid I have some bad news. It’s about your husband.”
“Oh god.” She gasped, covering her mouth with her hand and looking away. “He’s dead, isn’t he?”
“I’m afraid so.” Joe said quietly, nodding.
“When did it happen?” She asked, choking up.
“A few days ago, we just got the full autopsy this morning confirming it’s him.”
Really, by protocol, Joe should’ve informed her two days ago when he actually got Carson’s address and confirmation from Jeanie that it was actually Carson but he doubted Jessica would know that and other things had actually held him up.
“How…” Her voice was shaky. “How did he die?”
“Someone hit him with something really hard.” He took a breath. “And then buried him in Shadow Woods, near the border of Tenebris and Ellesburg.”
“Oh god.” She stood up.
“I know this might be a lot to take in…” Joe said calmly. He had always hated this part. Not because it was hard but because it was messy. Even after all this time, he’d never figured out exactly how to console the people. And he loved his job but god he hated being the messenger of news like this and being put in this position.
“What are your questions, detective?” She turns, wiping tears from her face.
“Well, I was just wondering when you last saw Carson.”
“I think it was August the 30th?” She sat down again. “He had a habit of disappearing for days without contact.”
“Is that why you didn’t report him missing?”
“Yes.” She sniffled, nodding and wiping another tear.
“And do you know of any enemies he might have had or anyone who hated him?”
“Detective, my husband was a rich man, practically everyone hated him or was jealous of him for some reason. But I can’t think of anyone in particular.”
“Alright. Just a few more questions and I’ll be out of your hair. Where were you on the night of September the third?”
“Was the night when he—”
“Yes, that’s what we’re assuming so far.” Joe said softly.
“I think I was here all day.”
“You didn’t leave the house all day?”
“No.” She shook her head.
“Anyone that can corroborate the alibi?”
“Our maid, Kelly. And the security cameras in the house. Carson had them installed when we first moved in.”
“All right, then. Just get me the info for Kelly and that footage and I’ll be out of your hair.”
“Of course.” She sniffled.
“Actually, could I get the whole footage from when you last saw him?”
“Of course. I think the entire last month is backed up on his computer in his study.”
“Fantastic. And that’s it, Jessica. If I have any more questions, I’ll let you know.”
Joe turned off the recorder and stood up.
“Detective,” She stopped him, “When can I see him?”
“I can arrange for a visit tomorrow morning, if that works.”
“Thank you.” She whispered, turning away. “Come on, I’ll show you to the study.”
Joe followed her out of the room and through more hallways before they arrived at the study.
The study was the entire opposite of the house. Wood everywhere. Real wood, as far as Joe could tell. The walls were decorated with the same frames as the rest of the house and a desk stood in front of the only window in the room.
“Is this hardwood?” Joe asked, looking at the floor.
“Yes.” Jessica replied, walking over to the desk. “Here. Here’s the computer.” She pointed at a small metallic enclosure sitting on the desk next to a monitor.
Joe walked up next to her. “Is it on right now?”
“I think so. It should be.”
“Alright, well I can’t take it with me but I’ll send some people over to collect the evidence. Would that be alright?”
“I suppose so. Well, here’s Kelly’s info then.” She grabbed the stack of post-it’s on the desk and a pen and scribbled down Kelly’s phone number and address. “That’s where you can reach her.”
“Thank you, Jessica. I appreciate the help and the cooperation.”
“Of course, detective. Well, you know your way out.” She said, putting on a happy face.
“That I do.” Joe said, walking away, leaving the woman alone. He had other places to be.
