so! i had the idea that it would be super fun to have a community-wide event where we all have a prompt and then everyone fills it in their own way.

...i then decided all the prompts i came up with were too good not to use, but also none of them were Good Enough to use exclusively, so i changed my mind and the prompt is now just MATING SEASON. with a few suggestions at the bottom of this post if you're looking for some.

since spring is coming upon us, i hereby invite everyone to join in the vernal festivities... which in turtle parlance, of course, means only one thing: write, draw, whatever your version of "mating season", then join me on march 1 to post it with the tag #TMNTSpringShellebration. we then shall browse the fine selection of our mutual artistic efforts, and basically just have a good time as a community.

Like lol. This is why I say - People who don't get SNS don't get the story. They don't get the sentiment behind the story, they don't get the messaging behind the story, they don't get the themes, they don't get the tropes, they don't understand narrative. But most importantly, they don't have the capacity to feel what Kishi wanted to make his readers feel. FEEL.

FEEL

If you truly understand the story, you simply cannot deny SNS. It's a love story. Full stop. It's not a matter of interpretation, it's just a fact. Whether or not you approve it. That's immaterial. Your inane theories don't cancel out the actual narrative that unfortunately most people in this fandom just don't understand or want to understand despite having been told.

At the end of the day, that's what it's all about isn't it? That's what the story is geared towards, that's why the author wrote it the way he did. So that he can convey what he wants to convey with visuals, dialogues, tropes, panel placement, editing, sound effects etc. The ingredients that make a story. And all of it combined gives you the experience any piece of art or audio visual story is supposed to give you, that's how you judge that piece of art. How impactful it was, how detailed it was, how meaningful it was and why, what kind of effort went into it. What does a piece of art make you feel? What does it make you think?

And this is what fans like these who write shitty anti SNS posts don't understand. And don't bother to. People, I suspect from western countries who see everything in the world with their very limited worldview and eurocentric lenses, don't know why shinjuu is considered to be the zenith of expression of love. It's not just in Japan, its concept is quite popular in South East Asia as well. Popular stories, I grew up listening to these stories. To die for each other and with each other is the ultimate expression of love, it's spiritual, it's not for funsies, it's not because it's so darkly romantic. It's meaningful and significant because it's the only way for the said lovers to be with each other in a world that won't let them be together while they are alive. It's rejecting the ways of the world and subverting its rules by defying them in this way. If the world will not allow this love in life then in death. But be together, they shall. That's what it means. It's an evolved sentiment, you need to be up there to get it. These are all layered stories where the said lovers/characters have other obligations as well, they have their own worldly burdens to carry. Like for example, in Love suicides at Amijima by Chikamatsu, which is one of the inspirations for this manga, the man is already married. He has a wife and kids. He is a businessman whose business isn't doing very well, he is under debt but he needs to gather enough money so he can pay out the owner of the brothel where the woman he loves works, so he can be with her as he is meant to be. But he doesn't have it, and his wife knows about it, she knows about this other woman that her husband loves but she carries out somehow. She is written as a sympathetic character. So is the man, so is his lover.

Not everything is black and white, nothing is black and white. But people, especially of a kids' target group, are only shown media with black and white margins. A thing is either good or bad. No nuance. No critical thinking. No curiosity. No redressal. No need either.

But toxic? Lol. Like people in this fandom simply loooove to put everything in its convenient little labels without understanding anything. They have no understanding of the character, character arcs, character traits, their motivations, their goals, their belief systems. But right at the top of the queue when it comes to criticizing them. Like nicely done. Lol.

Love is not rational. Emotions aren't rational. Emotions are multi dimensional, they are complex. These fans are used to watching Netflix chick flicks and rom coms and naturally, measure everything by that yardstick. They don't even know about the very significant and important cultural element such as double suicide or shinjuu which is very much a part of the romantic literary imagination of the Japanese public. And public from other Asian countries too. Fans don't understand what kind of obstacles people face in these countries, what with their identities and their values and monolithic social structures they operate in.

Only today, I was told by the admin that as long as I am part of their organization, I can't write anything problematic about the govt on any platform, can't even breathe about it, not even in jest, not even refer to anything negative, can't attend protests, can't speak at rallies, cannot document and publish them, can't write anything subversive, can't put pictures, nothing. Doesn't help that my own socio politico cultural identity already makes me a target in my country. But I can't even seek redressal because for that I will need to talk about it and the moment I do, they will put me behind bars. Heh.

People in such situations are vulnerable in a thousand different ways. But you have to know about them before commenting on them. If you are from a different culture or background, at least do something to learn more before commenting. But such decided fucking statement from these aristocratic elites, it's like a decree. They have said it and it's a line not to be crossed, or else they will harass you. Won't pay attention to useful stuff but would get primed to fight in an instant. So silly.

At least show some curiosity man, if the writer has taken such pains to write it, he must have been thinking something no? Nothing comes out of oblivion. This is simply common sense. But no, they would rather spew cheap, ineffective venom but won't move a finger to learn.

Toxic is what Sakura does to Sasuke. Who doesn't pay attention to his wishes, comfort, his dreams, his past, his goals. All she is concerned about is herself and WANTS a yes from Sasuke, no matter how he feels.

Naruto did everything to understand Sasuke. When Sasuke yelled at Naruto with pain and frustration in vote one, about how he doesn't understand what Sasuke went through, loss of his entire family and clan in one fell swoop by the hands of his own brother, so he won't understand why Sasuke was doing what he was doing (going to Oro and jeopardizing his life). And it makes Naruto stop in his tracks. He is devastated but he tries to understand. He spends the entire Shippuden understanding him.

This is after Pein arc, when Tazuna and Inari come to visit him in Konoha and help rebuild it (but like we all know who did the most of it, psst Yamato lol). Naruto lost Jiraiya in this arc, so he understood how Sasuke felt because losing Jiraiya was like losing family, and Naruto didn't have one to begin with. This is the import of this scene here. You can see it in the flashback.

This is Kage arc, on the bridge. Naruto was just visited by Obito who told him the truth about the massacre. So he understands Sasuke's motivations. He is clearly saying it. Sakura wonders what he is talking about but doesn't care to know still. She still went to assassinate Sasuke with a piss poor strategy. Naruto was ready to lay down his life for Sasuke in the same scene where Sakura tried to stab Sasuke in the back.

Lol. I am sorry but you don't understand what toxic means. Obviously. You also don't understand what love means. You just don't. You can't control love, it's a feeling. You cannot rationalize love. You just feel it. And you know it when it's reciprocated. In Sasuke and Naruto's case, it's both sided. Why else do you think Sasuke gave up his life for Naruto is land of waves arc when he didn't apparently even like him?? Why did he cushion Naruto's fall when he himself was half dead during the fight with Gaara? And why would he monopolize the right to kill Naruto when Obito expresses his intent to kill Naruto and Sasuke shields him? So no one gets to kill Naruto except for him? Naruto is his to save and his to KILL? Call that toxic too why don't you? Toxic ex bf shit. Lol.

Naruto's love for Sasuke is so impactful, even emotionally inept characters such as Sai are inspired, it changes their direction in life, their goals. What toxic man? How is this toxic?

Look how Naruto looks when he talks about Sasuke. Look at his passion, look at his reasons to love Sasuke. Where are Sakura's reasons to love Sasuke? There's none because Kishi didn't write it, said it would look contrived lol. And he is right, Sakura's character doesn't gel with it.

If you love someone, you must know the reasons no? Sasuke knows it, we see it when he is dying in land of waves arc. And we see it in Naruto's case as well. No one accepted his existence like Sasuke did, he was Naruto's friend, the bond they have is unlike any other. Tell me what's so toxic about an orphan relating and resonating with another orphan? What's so problematic about him trying to protect him from bad guys? What is so toxic about how deeply he feels for him? Especially when he KNOWS Sasuke feels equally strongly for him too? How do you connect with people? Don't you look for an intersection where you both just connect? Sometimes, it just happens. These days, people call it vibin I guess? Lol. Tell me what's so toxic about finding a kindred spirit that you can confide in? Or would you rather prefer someone like Sakura who doesn't understand or even attempt to understand what it means to be in Naruto and Sasuke's shoes? She dismisses Naruto's feelings, she dismisses Sasuke's feelings, doesn't even care to know. She realizes Naruto has had a hellish time in Konoha given he is a jinchuuriki, but does she improve her behaviour? Sasuke tells her multiple times that he thinks very lowly of her, she doesn't understand his feelings or goals, she is still the same and still cannot see anything beyond her own nose. She is annoying because she doesn't change despite Sasuke trying to make her understand. But does she change? Hell no. Still keeps pestering a clearly disinterested, disengaged Sasuke. Now THAT is toxic.

What's so toxic about Naruto finding relief in finding someone like himself in a village where there's no one else like him? Isn't this how people meet? Connect? That common thread? Because Naruto knows by instict that Sasuke, being an orphan and alone, will understand Naruto like others won't. Like I said, it's a matter of feeling. What's toxic about finding someone similar like you by the grace of which, you want to establish some connection? It only reflects compatibility and mutual understanding. What's so wrong with that?

Look at the second panel. Naruto looks so soft, so introspective, so loving when talking and thinking about Sasuke. He never thought he would have a bond like that, he never thought he would meet anyone who he would relate to so much, he, an orphan who never had the advantage of people understanding him or caring for him, which he finally found in Sasuke and Iruka. Why wouldn't he wanna protect him? Why wouldn't he love him? What's stopping him exactly? What's so toxic about him wanting to be like Sasuke? So that he can feel like Sasuke's equal, so Sasuke won't dismiss him. Naruto was insecure at this time but he is not some monstrous manipulator people think he is. Like fuck, what do you expect him to do? So just because you cannot place yourself in his shoes, and won't even attempt to even though Kishi puts so much emphasis on it, you get to mischaracterize him? That's just immature. Like I feel sorry for you. You missed out on so much. Naruto is someone who is strategically written as the underdog that we are all supposed to root for. Which means his character is written to evoke sympathy and wring the most melodramatic emotions from the readers so as to get them even more invested in this story. If you came out thinking Naruto is the bad dude, you clearly didn't get this story and you clearly don't get storytelling, doesn't matter if you approve of Naruto's character or not.

Naruto loves Sasuke and he would go to any lengths to save him. Just like how Sasuke did in land of waves arc. Just like how Iruka protected Naruto in chapter two. That's what Naruto knows. Loving someone is protecting them to death. No matter what the consequences. That's what he knows from his context and that's what we understand by reading this story. He would rather remain a fool but not give up on Sasuke.

As long as you see everything through your little, limited, juvenile lenses, this is what you will get from media. Explore, learn, talk to people, listen to them, do your own research and thinking and then come to your conclusions. How else would you understand anything?

Y'all Sasuke lovers are fucking dumb I gotta say. You should be happy for Sasuke that he has someone like Naruto to love him and care for him. (Ending not considered, since it's just fuckall anyway, a high pricetagged bandaid. It's contrived, a deus ex machina'ed ending.) Just like Naruto stans should be glad that he has someone like Sasuke to love him and care for him. You don't get Sasuke and Naruto stans who hate Sasuke, you don't get Naruto.

People who deny or criticise SNS, sorry but you don't get love. Not the feeling or its expression in stories and media. You don't know romance tropes, you don't know cultural elements, you don't know how other cultures see and understand love. They say everything is fair in love and war don't they? It's meaningful, it didn't come out of oblivion.

This story is about love, the point of this story is that true love is bigger than entire nations and all the restrictions and limitations it puts on you. That's why Naruto chose Sasuke over Konoha. This is not rocket science either, if you were paying attention rather than concocting your headcanons, you would have gotten it too. But it's much too effort isn't it? And more than anything else, you don't wanna break your circle of joy/mutual wanking bubble by acknowledging their love. How else would you project and self insert?

Sasuke and Naruto both love each other madly and deeply. It's mutual, they fuel each other's feelings and hence actions, that's why their feelings are so big. That's why they feel so righteous about it, because they know that the other person feels it too.

People do crazy shit for love. My aunt absconded with a man who worked for her father, my grandfather. He was much lower in class and status, these things mean a lot in some societies. They make or break relationships. So my aunt knew my grandfather will never allow it, neither will the society. So they absconded and lived a miserable life, without much capital or any connections. They were ostracized from society. Absconding with someone is a taboo of the first order. Not even their own parents talked with them. But they stuck together through thick and thin. He got a brain tumor but she nursed him through it while looking after the kids. She was so devoted to him, that you wouldn't believe. He relapsed some time ago and this time the cancer was terminal. She devoted herself to his care again. Her daughter, my cousin used to tell me: My parents love each other more than they love us, their children. They only have eyes for each other.

Hehe. And it's true, I saw it. In fact, I always felt a little uncomfortable with them in the same room, it used to make me feel like I wasn't needed there. They were so focused on each other.

You underestimate love because you have never felt it. Not everyone is equipped or capable of loving like Naruto and Sasuke. But have a heart man, you can understand it if you just removed those homophobic and dumbass cobwebs from your eyes.

My gut reaction is to say both of them, but that's not really the answer we're looking for here, is it? Hehe. So I have tried to seriously consider this and provide a sincere answer to your question.

A quick heads up, I will be mentioning reylo and lotura here and there throughout this little essay!

The most fun part about comparing Ben and Lotor I think comes from the fact that these two are suuuuper similar to one another. I covered this a tiny bit in this ask where I talk about how protective the two of them are, but to reiterate:

Both Lotor and Ben are from sci-fi/fantasy franchises that were released around the same time, both have troubled relationships with their fathers, both are great swordsmen and pilots and engineers, both murdered their fathers, have complicated childhoods, rarely show their true faces to others, killed their dads, fell in love with fierce and powerful women, kissed said fierce and powerful women before shortly dying afterwards, said bye-bye to papa by doin a lil stabby stab, became intergalatic leaders of the most powerful empires in the universe -- oh, and did I mention daddy issues? You tend to find that a lot with long-haired emo boys from fiction. It's just the way it is. And for these two in particular you can also sprinkle in a little "mommy issues" just for funsies.

But in all seriousness, Lotor and Ben share a LOT in common, which is pretty crazy! So who deserves better, really? In order to make a fair judgment my first thought was to take into account their crimes and if they were able to redeem themselves in the end. But this is also fiction. As soon as people slap the label "toxic" on a character or ship, I usually tend to tune them out. This is by no means a hot take, but fiction is a form of escapism. It is a way for people to experience a thing (e.g. horror, adventure, romance) without actually having to experience it. So if we have a couple of sad boys who murder and manipulate people but also want to find love, who's gonna stop us from rooting for them? Absolutely no one!

I digress, but my point is that I usually don't care which character did what and why they're a bad person for it. But even then were Ben and Lotor really all that bad? After all, we learned from "The Rise of Kylo Ren" comics that Ben was ultimately not the one responsible for destroying Luke's Jedi school, and in TROS we found out that he was being manipulated by Palpatine the entire time.

For Lotor, we never really got a clear picture of what exactly he was doing with that Altean colony. To this day I still don't get it! In S6E6 he says, "Many Alteans perished in my quest to unlock the mysteries of quintessence." But then in S8E13 Allura says, "Lotor may have been misguided, but ultimately he wanted to preserve life." Like, what does any of that mean?? There are cracks in the armor, Anon! Cracks!!! Not to mention all of the theories with very convincing evidence that there were a ton of changes made to season 8, and unfortunately I don't think we're ever going to get a solid answer from the showrunners as to what was really supposed to happen.

In the end, the complicated and morally gray choices that Lotor and Ben made throughout their lives are what make their characters so interesting! They did the wrong things for what they believed to be the right reasons. If they didn't come across as the mysterious and devious fellas as they did when we first saw them, we wouldn't be such big fans of them. We would've chosen someone else 😉

So any bad deeds aside, maybe we oughta take a step back and do one last comparison. Most notably, comparing how they died. Ben died saving the person he loved, while Lotor died fighting the person he loved. I would have to argue that Lotor's death was far more gruesome and superfluous than Ben's. Not only did he go mad from all of the raw quintessence coursing through his body, but we find out in season 8 that his body had remained in his ship for three whole years, decayed and melted (seriously whose idea was it to share that imagery? I'm scarred for life) and left to sit there by his own mother.

Ben's passing was also deeply upsetting. I cried in the theater. But you can't deny that it was a peaceful one. From the way his body faded into nothingness, leaving beind only his clothes, the audience is able to assume that he became a Force Ghost (or did he? 🤔). He was battered and beaten, but he brought the woman he loved back to life, and in giving his life to her and helping her defeat Palpatine, he redeemed himself. And not only did he redeem himself, but he was also able to reconcile with both of his parents.

Lotor didn't get to do either of those things. He never got the chance. He was manipulated by both of his parents, and he never had the opportunity to redeem himself on his own terms. You know, for someone who directly influenced the entirety of season 8's plot, Lotor is hardly in it! I suppose he sort of redeemed himself, at least in Allura's eyes, but he was long gone by then. He wasn't around to see any of the stuff going on in season 8, stuff happening specifically FOR him because his mother wanted him back. In season 6 he went out like your average cartoon villain--dying because of his own hubris while the heroes looked on. In season 8 we only get: a flashback episode, him showing up in Allura's bedroom ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), and him copied and pasted into the background as a ghost in the finale, almost like something is amiss in this scene (cracks in the armor, Anon!!!). UGH. You hate to see it.

But at the same time, I'm not too upset that Lotor died if I'm being completely honest with you. At least not anymore, anyway. Don't get me wrong, at the time I cried when his death was confirmed, and then I cried again when Allura died. But at least they get to be together in the afterlife. Ben had a lot going for him. He was only 30 years old when he died, and that's still very young. He could have had a long, happy life with Rey, and to truly redeem himself in the eyes of the resistance, could have devoted his time to restoring peace and order to the galaxy, as well as teach the new generation of Force-wielders alongside Rey.

Lotor, on the other hand, was 10,000 years old. The idea of having lived that long is not only unfathomable, but the fact that he probably spent most of that time being completely alone is just... really, really sad. If I were him I would have been ready to kick the bucket, too. I think the kindest thing to do for him at that point was to give him a peaceful, as well as justified, departure in the series finale. Allura had suffered as well. She had lost everything, just like him, so the two of them finding peace in the afterlife would be the most merciful conclusion, I believe.

okay in honor of the little snippet i posted of this au yesterday, here is a little guide to the parent trap au! i don't plan on doing much else with it so i wanted to share in case y'all are interested hehe

-no faerun/magic, mercedes is on a longform journey of self discovery when she meets hen- the child of an infamous politican, who has spent his entire life stuck under said father's thumb. they connect pretty instantly!

-(also, they are both trans <3 and while mercedes has already socially transitioned, henry has not </3 it's one of the things they connect about)

-after a couple years of mercedes sticking around LA and dating henry in secret, the twins are born! unfortunately, this is also when barry discovers the relationship and. very much disapproves. his kid having even ONE child out of wedlock (let alone two!) is something he does NOT want for his reputation, and since henry hasn't left the house (not by his own volition), he's forced to reluctantly end the relationship with mercedes.

-mercedes leaves to go back to her brother's place in colorado, but not before her and henry agree to each take one of the twins- a reminder of their relationship. mercedes takes sparrow, henry keeps lark

-after a few years of raising lark quietly under his father's thumb, henry finally gets a job outside of his father's influence and is able to escape- mostly because he feared for lark's wellbeing. he gets his own place, cuts ties with his family, and strives to ensure that lark grows up happy and free.

-meanwhile, with the help from her brother, mercedes opens a witchery! she sells crystals and does tarot readings, and when sparrow's old enough, he starts helping.

-growing up separated means the twins are not nearly as similar as they are in canon. lark is quieter and more withdrawn while sparrow is cheery and affectionate. both of them make friends pretty easily though, and sparrow takes after mercedes in more ways than one- it wouldn't be a nyx au if sparrow weren't some flavor of trans and in here, where sparrow grows up with mercedes alone? yeah.

-when the twins are both thirteen, henry and mercedes send them to the same summer camp! it was something they had talked about when the twins were born, though neither one of them realized the other would REMEMBER.

-at the camp is when the twins really grow into the mischievous gremlins we know them as in canon. when they meet, they bounce off of each other's energy, causing mayhem and destruction wherever they go <3 my beloveds, truly

-towards the end of the camp is when they actually talk about how much they look alike, and their respective upbringings. lark complains about how his father's been flirting with a coworker and bringing him and his annoying son over for dinners, how henry is annoyingly overbearing and a pushover. sparrow, meanwhile, loves her mother so dearly! but she's always wanted to meet her father. it would be solving two birds with one stone to reconnect them, they both realize: sparrow would get the father she wants, and lark wouldn't have to deal with darryl and grant OR be the sole recipient of henry's affections!

-so naturally, they decide to switch places.

-lark cuts sparrow's hair to match his, sparrow teaches lark enough spanish to be passable with mercedes. they exchange tips for how to be each other- mostly for funsies, though, since the plan to get henry and mercedes back together doesn't really require them being each other, it's just part of the fun!

-the camp ends, they go back to the other's place with henry and mercedes both none the wiser. lark finds himself a little overwhelmed with how much mercedes immediately loves him and respects when he wants to be left alone, and though the witchery isn't his style, he finds his uncle fun to be around, and it's a little embarrassing, how easily he fits right in.

-sparrow, on the other hand, has such a hard time pretending to be lark. she finds henry's jokes to be a genuine delight - to the point that she has to hide her face in her sleeves to stop herself from smiling - and thrives under the affection he lavishes onto her.

-so naturally, she cracks first, spilling to henry after a few weeks that she's actually sparrow and that lark is with mercedes. as my little snippet shows: it's a very teary confession.

-the only way to switch back now is for henry and mercedes to meet up! with sparrow and lark negotiating with their respective parents, henry and sparrow end up going to the witchery themselves- mostly because at this point, mercedes still doesn't know about the swap (lark thought it would be a nice surprise for her, having henry and sparrow show up on her doorstep)

-and what a surprise it is! sparrow's happy to be home, lark is surprisingly happy to see his father, and henry and mercedes - now both in a position where they can actually rekindle their relationship and be with each other without fear of outsiders - instantly reconnect.

-plus, lark and sparrow make a strong case for how they're better off together and really shouldn't henry and mercedes try to do SOMETHING to ensure they can see each other?

-(and, as a bonus: lark and sparrow DO TRY to ward off darryl once henry and mercedes are back together in the form of what happens in the movie! but. well. polyamory exists <333)

4 - If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

i got an an ask about this ages ago and spent a really long time thinking about it but i really think missy is too wrapped up in Doctor Who Specifically to really work in any other story? like i watched agatha all along the other day and agatha is Very Missy but even if i dropped missy into that situation i just feel like it wouldn't be her? anymore? but with that being said i think she would be a good character for a vaugely space opera-ey book where we spend most of the book inside her head, with her thoughts, not a lot of dialouge. it might take away a bit from her general fabulousness & over the topness but i think she would be a good character for one of those 'last person alive in xyz isolated space station' things. although possibly that is just my desire to pick apart her psyche.

that being said i think she would also thrive doing This Is How You Lose The Time War with twelve although that is possibly very similar to the dw time war anyways....

it's not nessecarily The Fandom b/c i havent seen much of it in the fan creations i look at but a lot of people, eu authors included, seem to really lean in to her being Secretly A Good And Nice Person which she?? isnt really?? like obv s10 & 'let me try to be good' is a very important part of her arc but most of her regen & existence before that isn't under that. she does kill people. for funsies. like there's an audio story i forget which one where she's pretending to be a nanny to some kids & i know they were doing it for mary poppins paralells but they were leaning wayyyy to far into the 'she's only pretending to be mean & secretly loves them' angle which sort of annoys me idk why. it just feels so reductive

i wouldnt say im anywhere near in the fandom but as i mentioned before i watched agatha all along & it was literally died 2017 born 2024 welcome back missy doctor who. the similiarites. Were There. which im fairly sure was intentional like theres no way thats a coincidence but it was a wee bit jarring for the first couple episodes.

my first impression, from the little bits at the end of episodes through s8 was sort of just a 'i'm sure this will all be super important later idk why she called the doctor her boyfriend though' but when she kissed him in dark water i was mostly just thinking GOOD FOR HER lol. the master reveal did go crazy though i was clapping & cheering for that hehe i'd only worked it out like ten seconds before she actually says it lol

like i definitely knew i liked her & thought she was really cool but while i was watching her seasons i was still stuck on the tenth doctor so it kinda took me a while & some episode rewatches to get fully attached to her & now ive been thinking about her for six months lol

New York:

Ive decided that his cryptid/animal form is a blue jay/cat hybrid. Why? Idk tbh. We as a fandom have decided that he is a cat in human form, and the blue-jay is apparently one of the most common birds in NY (and theyre pretty as hell-). I dont really have a good reason lmao. He has the wings of a blue jay (along with some feathers around his back/neck/torso) and cat ears and tail (tho his tail has feathers on it that spread out to look like a blue jay's tailfeathers.) and claws. Also his eyes are gold and his pupils are slits :3. His claws come out of the base of his fingernails, almost like Wolverine's. His speed and agility is increased quite a bit, he can climb even better, amd hear things that he wouldn't normally be able to hear.

Louisiana:

The little voices in my head have all come together and decided that he's a gator/wolf hybrid. Wolf cuz ✨Rougarou✨ and gator cuz why tf not. He has wolf ears and tail, and gator scales on his back/neck/forearms, as well as a bit of his torso. His eyes are a bright yellow and he has slit pupils like an alligator. His teeth can very from being all sharp, or just his canines. His strength, speed, stamina, swimming and hearing/smell abilities all are increased.

Texas:

I just do what the little voices in my head tell me to. He's a deer/northern mockingbird hybrid (cuz deer are the most widespread large mammal in Texas and his state bird is the northern mockingbird). He has antlers and deer hooves and tail, as well as mockingbird wings. His hearing, speed, and jumping abilities are all increased. He's also very alert and gets scared very easily (easier than usual, and he hates it). He definitely headbutts Alaska and California and others that he's able to (some of the taller states).

Massachusetts:

To be completely honest, I haven't though too much, but I'm thinking maybe a raccoon or a chickadee. Raccoon cuz hehe funny, and chickadee cuz the black-capped chickadee is his state bird. This might be one I have to think about more tbh.

Gov:

He's an eagle, no questions asked. I mean- for God's sake he's the closest thing we have to full personification of America, so yes. He has large eagle wings and bright yellow eyes with slit pupils. His legs from the knee down can either be like eagle's legs/talons, or they can be normal, and he has talons instead of fingernails. He has feathers along his neck/back and a long the sides of his face. His speed and strength are both increased.

Alaska:

Again, the little voices are telling me that he's a polar bear/moose hybrid. Pretty much most of him is par bear, as in he has white fur on most of him, he has the claws, and white bear ears and tail and the tips of his hair are white. The moose part of him is literally just a pair of moose antlers. And his strength is heavily increased (not that that was necessary-). He has 100% headbutted Texas back and sent him for a trip.

California:

He is ✨grizzly bear✨. It just makes sense. He has the bear ears, tail, and claws. And fur along his back, torso, neck, forearms, and legs. Also he's like 10x stronger (again, not necessary :') he's already buff enough) and has definitely thrown Texas a few times.

Nevada:

Big horned sheep. He has ram horns, the legs of a ram, and a tail. And he definitely headbutts people. For funsies.

Colorado:

Basically the same as Nevada. Also he gets the munchies cuz he's high 24/7 and eats literally anything. Chair? Munch. Plastic? Munch. Rock? M u n c h.

Florida:

That's not even a question lmao. He's an alligator. He has the yellow eyes and slit pupils, alligator scales on his arms/back/legs/neck. And he's a lot stronger and can swim faster.

New Jersey:

He is a demon/devil hybrid, no questions asked. He has elf-like ears, devil horns/tail/wings, bright red eyes, sharp teeth, and black patches all over his body.

Rhode Island:

Hehe. He's a raccoon cuz i said so. And nobody is changing my damn mind. He has the floofy tail and ears and claws and teeth. He is angy short raccoon :3

I answered this one for Dale over here! TL;DR parties are a constant in Dale's life. He generally views them as a vector for political/social gain rather than something to attend for funsies. Charles emphatically DOES NOT like parties, because A.) he doesn't like people, B.) he's some flavor of neurodivergent, and B.) he had a TERRIBLE childhood with few chances to practice conventional social interaction. At the beginning of Lost Letters, Jamie ropes him into attending a party at the Rosehip Club for tactical reasons. He meets Dale, who drags him along to subsequent events. He complains about this for the entire book, but what is he supposed to do? Not spend every single waking moment with his bf??

❗️(exclamation point) - What was the scariest moment of your character’s life? Does it still affect them?

OH BOY, do these lads have scary memories!! Several come up within Lost Letters, so these are slightly spoilery. Oh, well. When Dale was thirteen, a highwayman (or hired assassin?) nearly murdered him and Rosalind. They were on their way to boarding school. He stopped their carriage and put a knife to Rosalind's throat. One of her guardsmen rescued them by shooting the attacker, but things got pretty dicey for a minute. In moments of panic, Dale can still feel the splatters of blood and brain matter on his face. Eugh. Charles has many traumatic memories. He was abducted into the cyborg force as a child; he still fears Imperial doctors and the mysterious warren of caves beneath the palace. There's one particular instance that stands out in his mind, but I can't reveal the whole story here – it's highly plot-relevant, hehe. It resulted in his bionic eye and the metal chunk of his skull.

🚨 (siren) - What’s your character’s relationship with the law? Have they ever been arrested? What for? What are their opinions on law enforcement?

Dale is a hot, wealthy Goldenheart and lineal descendant of the Queen. He can get away with murder. He doesn't concern himself very much with rules, but he does try to keep a clean record – anything else would threaten his claim to the throne. For the most part, Dale benefits greatly from the oppressive, corrupt legal system of his world. He sits at the top of the City's social order. (Asterisk. Dale's queerness, and his illegitimate Leadenheart sister, certainly complicate his social positionality. But that's a can of worms we don't have time to open now.) Charles lowkey IS the law – he's a junior member of the Imperial military. He's a cyborg and a Goldenheart, which means that he's pretty high up in their Order. However, he's still an apprentice until the end of Lost Letters, which means he doesn't have a formal rank. He attends palace schooling/training and sometimes conducts one-off missions to kill mages. He's an excellent tracker. Charles' mentor is General Dmitrius Fenway, the guy who leads the entire dang force, so that's a big deal! It definitely means that Charles will graduate to a prestigious rank, and probably means that he'll be a prominent leader someday. However, Charles is not Dmitrius' favorite apprentice – that would be Charles' sister, Cecelia. This whole fucked-up little family dynamic is complicated. Charles is a sensitive person, and despite the lifelong brainwashing, he feels a little iffy about the whole "forced military service" thing. When he leaves to attend college, with the Queen's personal permission, these feelings only grow; he sees the world outside the Imperial echo chamber, and it allows him to recognize the deplorable implications. Cecelia, on the other hand, is SUPER ENTHUSIASTIC about serving the force. She has never left, and she craves validation for her skill. However, she's also a girl; women soldiers are less common and less respected in this pseudo-Victorian dystopia. (I should probably clarify that Lost Letters deals HEAVILY with oppressive gender roles, misogyny, and fascist ideology. It's not intended to be a light read or a conventional romance.)

Ch18 Spoilers: What the Hell Happened with Aemond

Hehe okay I don't have the patience to wait until the explanation fits into the narrative, because it won't come up for a while. Daeron's gonna have to do a lot of digging back at the Citadel before anyone in-universe finds this out; until then, they're all going to treat it a bit like a miracle since they won't know any better. But y'all know me, and y'all know that if I do anything I make sure it's canon compliant in like ten different ways haha. I've put a ton of thought into this and didn't write this plot point just for funsies!

Also, if anyone wants to wait to find out, by all means do! But the reveal won't be treated as a huge plot twist, so you'll still be able to enjoy Stormbreak with all of the expected amounts of suspense if you want to read further! So if you want to know how Aemond pulled off what he did, or exactly what he pulled off, read on!

Before you read this post, read this one here because otherwise parts of this will seem like they come out of nowhere.

Basically, if a rider comes across a dragon who is directly related to their claimed dragon (parent/child/sibling), there's a possibility that they can claim that second dragon. I got this idea from all of the emphasis of the phrase "blood of the dragon," because it was interesting to me that the only bloodlines that seemed to matter were the Targaryen ones. But what if the ability to form this bond was inherited on the dragon side as well? Remember that every single dragon in Westeros is a descendant of the first dragons who came over from Valyria with the Targaryens, all of whom had this type of bond.

But a rider can ONLY form a simultaneous bond with another dragon if that second dragon is currently unclaimed. Remember that in my lore, nothing can replace or break an existing bond. And I maintain that! So RIP Joffrey, and please don't try to get on Syrax, she already has a rider and she won't accept another; no dragon with a rider ever will. This is also why Rhaenyra didn't bond with any of her sons' dragons, even though I think most of them probably hatched from Syrax's eggs: They were all placed inside her children's cradles, and basically bonded the second they hatched.

Since it's canonically really difficult to get an egg to hatch, even if you're a Targaryen, I also think that an egg is unlikely hatch for a rider who already has a dragon; if they want a second one, they'll have to claim an adult, "widowed" dragon rather than hoping that one will hatch for them. For example, if Rhaenyra wanted to claim a second dragon, she'd need to wait for one of Syrax's eggs to (1) hatch on its own and grow a little, or (2) get and lose a rider before trying to claim it.

How does this fit into canon? Well, if you check all of ASoIaF canon (I don't recommend it, since it takes forever, but I did), there is no instance of a Targaryen coming across an unbonded dragon related to their current dragon, aside from possibly Daenerys, who does succeed in forming a relationship with her three dragons. I've described here that I think Daenerys's bond with her dragons is meant to be a bit unique, but I acknowledge that the vast majority of the fandom considers her to be a rider of three dragons, not just one. And Daenerys's dragons are all siblings, and all of them were unclaimed when she came upon them! You can believe this without contradicting the idea that she was only able to hatch them because of a blood sacrifice. So it works for the same reasons that Aemond claiming Vermithor works, while preserving Daenerys's narrative importance as being different from all who came before her! She's still the first Targaryen to ever hatch and claim multiple dragons at once, and she's still the first Targaryen to have three dragons at her beck and call.

This adds more nuance and emphasis to the focus in Valyria on twins, siblings, and family. If bloodline matters on both sides of the dragon-rider bond, it's a great thing for dragons to be related to each other, since it increases the likelihood of a rider being able to claim multiple dragons. It's also going to help me play a ton more into the narratives that I've been setting up of the rule of three ("the dragon has three heads, and all that").

Finally, this lets me pay homage to how Aemond actually claimed Vhagar in the books. I understand why they did it differently in the show, and actually have no complaints about the scene where he claims Vhagar; I think it's one of the best scenes of season 1. And I love that this moment allows me to parallel what happened in the books, and stay very true to his actual character and personality. For all that bloodline is important, I also didn't want to ignore that the personality of rider and dragon do have to be compatible. I think Vermithor was probably pretty impressed at Aemond's sheer audacity, just like his mother once was. Plus, we know that in the Dance they specifically only let men try to claim him because it was suspected that he'd only tolerate male riders because of Jaehaerys.

Anyways, as always I've put way too much thought into this haha. But this is part of why I've been emphasizing the phrases "blood of the dragon" and "the dragon has three heads" and why I've written the dragon bond in general as almost a familial bond.

TLDR: Any dragonrider, not just Aemond, would be able to claim a second dragon, ONLY IF that dragon is a direct relation of their first dragon, and ONLY IF that dragon does not have a bond already in place. There are just so few dragons that this opportunity has never presented itself before in Westeros, but I think it was probably common back in Valyria, hence the focus on the "blood of the dragon" and the symbol of three in Targaryen culture. This also helps to explain why Daenerys was able to bond with her three dragons, if you subscribe to the belief that she's got an equivalent type of dragon-rider bond.

1. Why do you write fanfic?

I write if I feel like there's something left out of canon for me to explore or an idea I want to talk about, or to make my own comfort fics hehe

2. Which of your posted stories do you think about the most, even though the story is “finished”?

I am always thinking about Kathryn Janeway, PI, I want her to have a whole series of adventures (especially with Chakotay) but I haven't figured out how to make it work (yet??)

3. If you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?

Trust the process, trust it!!!! You will figure out how to write the thing I promise just give it time and take breaks if needed! Also your style will change and that's okay it doesn't mean you're getting worse at writing ToT there's no wrong way to do this it's for fun!!!

4. What’s your relationship to fic stats?

Every kudos, comment and bookmark gives me the warm fuzzies!! But sometimes I get stuck on wondering why one fic didn't get as much attention as another...

5. Is there a pairing or scenario or friendship you miss writing? If so, why? If not, why not?

I miss writing J/C soo much but I have little to no ideas. I love their tragedy and drama and I love giving them a happy ending afterwards <3

i’ve been seeing these like rodeo cowboy videos all over my fyp (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8dSPGLp/ ) on tik tok and ya know, cuz cowboy!joel is living in my frontal lobe right now rent free, i was like … damn, if that was joel doin this or on a bucking bronco at readers like state or county fair and then like sees reader in the crowd eyein him as he’s getting himself or his horse or whatever ready… and she’s eye fucking him… with his sexy fuckin get up they all wear with the cowboy hat and everythin… and he makes eyes with the reader and maybe tips his hat and gives her a small wink. then she like looks away a bit embarrassed and starts talking to a guy sitting next to her, let’s just say is her brother or close guy friend and that makes joel jealous as he thinks he has competition, and maybe before his event or turn he comes and introduces himself and lowkey flirts with reader a little because now up close he can see her fully and she’s got this sexy floral sundress on with her cowgirl boots and cute cowgirl hat on looking like a damn meal that he wants to devour. but he’s also just a tad bit soft as when she shakes his hand he pulls it up to kiss her knuckles and compliments how pretty she is that instead of the horse knocking him out of orbit, the reader is (or something corny like that, ya know?) and they banter back and forth a bit as the reader thinks he’s a bit cocky but sweet and likes how easy it is to talk to him, but is lowkey ready to ride that cowboy if you know what i mean… and he knows it too by the way she keeps looking down at how tight his jeans hug his pelvis and show a faint outline of him, but when he catches her, she says she was admiring his belt buckle, and to kind of stir the pot and challenge her a little bit he says something like, “how ‘bout if i win m’self first place here when it’s my turn, sweetheart, you can remove this buckle yourself and replace it with the prize winnin’ one after i take you out for dinner” and she is lowkey turned TF on by what we ALL know he means by that, but likes how he presented it and has been good to banter with her, so she says something like “only if you win first. i don’t think they give belt buckles as participation trophies” just to be a brat or something like that. HOWEVER!!!! little does she know he’s like KNOWN for his talent, as he’s like a national champion or something and winning first will be simple for him… 😏🥵😮‍💨 so like… he’s gon get that belt buckle and maybe when he finally has his turn they announce him like “next up we have Joel Miller, who just won himself the National Championship last season, let’s see if he can defend his title here tonight.” and her face goes red and he watches her as they announce him and after the announcement is done he tips his hat, winks and mouths to her something like ‘let’s go, first place, baby’ or something to make us FOAM at the mouth with how fucking sexy he would be in this moment and then yeah… i’m sure you can go from there 😮‍💨

joel slipped the warm leather belt around your neck, the large brass belt buckle cool against your skin. it was his prize from a rodeo back when he did bull riding as a twenty something year old boy. it was his most prized possession, and now you wore it like a choker. his fingers tightened the buckle until it was secure, the stretch of it across your throat unforgiving and suffocating. he gave it one last tug, and you restrained yourself from clawing at the burning sting of the leather digging into your neck.

“ain’t you just the prettiest lil’ thing,” he cooed.

your vision was already hazy around the corners, a vignette lens of the room around you as it warped at the edges of your sight. you tried speaking, but the words croaked from your lips, the syllables dying on your tongue and drying out before you could even make another sound.
